Brief Summary: Danny was, arguably, the sweetest baby ever born. He even managed to cling to it when he was very small. The older he got, however, the worse the houses he was put in, and the more reserved and frightened he became. He began to pick up strange little habits to keep himself calm, like shaking his hand in a short, jerky motion. He also began to think he was worthless, and so became nearly silent. If he spoke, it was as short a sentence as he felt he could get away with.
By the time Emily got him, Danny was to the point that he barely looked at her, much less spoke. She did eventually coax him out of his shell, helping him to get more toward a “normal”. Eventually he began to smile and joke almost constantly. In fact, it was how he hid basically every other emotion – behind a smile and an easy laugh. Now he’s a clown that tries to make friends with everyone he meets, and who is usually very likeable.
Danny wouldn’t admit it, but he is so frightened by the thought of someone totally and completely ignoring him that he has developed a fear of commitment. On top of that is his severe dislike of being alone or ignored, making him crave companionship, while also making him worried about getting too close to any of them.
Power Description »Danny flies with big, white wings. There's really not a lot to say about it... He's had enough practice that he's pretty good at flying, and the only real limit to his ability is his own stamina.
History »Danny never learned the situation of his birth, nor the fate of his parents. From the earliest moment he can remember, he was shuffled from one foster home to another. As is often the case with such children, many of the homes that Danny was put in were…less civilized than should be expected. He was beaten on several occasions, and often locked in closets and basements. The times he tried to fight back, he received more than one broken bone, at least three concussions, and more scars than he cares to count.
When he was thirteen, he was placed with a young woman of twenty-five. She was kind to him, patient with his odd little quirks and completely lack of trust. It was the trust thing that he needed the most work with, and with which the woman – Emily Larkin – took the most care. She managed to warm him up to her, eventually, and had even given him a semblance of normality. He was happy with what he had, so of course it had to go wrong. There was talk (behind closed doors, where he wasn’t supposed to hear it) of him being adopted by some family whose name he never could catch. He briefly considered running away while Emily fought it, they moved twice, and then (he could never say exactly how) Emily had adopted him.
Life turned good after that, and Danny settled into the monotony of normalcy. He had only a year of that before everything fell apart. It started as an irritating itch between his shoulder blades that he could never quite reach, and a strange sort of bump, like a knot just beneath the skin. Danny tried to shrug it off at first, but was eventually reduced to showing it to his mother. She was just as baffled as he.
They were both shocked when the wings finally began to poke through. They began as only small protrusions of bone, though the speed of growth increased rapidly once they were free. At first they were ugly, naked skin stretched over the bone. Within a few hours, the feathers had sprouted, and by the end of the day his wings were fully formed.
All things considered, Emily took it very well. She didn’t freak out, more than a shriek the first time she saw what they were, and then again when the feathers first started to appear. Emily even tried to keep Danny home and take care of the…development. Eventually, however, she had to admit that it was beyond her, and – after some carefully done research - she sent him off to Silas.
