I set fire to the rain And I threw us into the flames let it burn Daniel slipped inside the simulation room and softly clicked the door shut behind him. It looked like a stainless steel gym, minus the bleachers, but he had done some digging and found out that the room was indeed fireproof. The lights came on automatically as he looked around for a way to lock the door. The last thing he needed was for someone to come in and get fried. However, there was no lock. Other than the handle, only a small saftey glass window broke up the smooth surface of the metal. With a sigh, he turned his back on it and walked purposefully to the center of the room. Part of him still didn't believe that he was going to attempt this. In theory, he'd already done it as a kid, but he hadn't really used his abilities in years. He had good reason, but that also meant that he had no practice. The only form of control he was accustomed to was not using his "gifts" at all. There was too much risk of someone getting hurt. Still, he had an urge to really push himself and see what he was capable of. With the exception of Antartica, this was probably the safest place to experiment.
His shoes squeaked slightly on the polished floor as he turned in a circle, sincerely hoping this room would keep him from burning down the entire school. Daniel took a deep breath and shed his button up shirt, leaving the t-shirt underneath. He rubbed his palms on his thighs after tossing the shirt aside and tried to center himself. In truth, he was only half sure what that even meant. Center himself? How was he supposed to center himself? He was only stalling and he knew it. For a long moment, he just closed his eyes and stood there, completely motionless. Fire was a volaitle thing. Once created, it took on a life of its own. Untended, it could grow wild and devour everything in its path. Conversly, it might as easily flicker into nothingness. Unpredictable. Dangerous. Destructive.
Daniel could feel his heart thumping under his ribs and forced himself to ignore it. He would be much better off if he never played with fire again. And yet, in the back of his mind, there was still that urge to stretch his powers out like a long-unused muscle. He could feel it, like an itch just under his skin. Slowly, he opened his eyes and focused. Normally, he would catch his hands on fire first, which seemed to make things easier, but this wasn't the time to play things safe. Clenching his jaw with a new determination, he pictured in his mind what he wanted to happen, then lowered his guard and willed it to happen. A split second later, he was surrounded by a ring of fire. Nearly a foot in diameter, it burned at chest height, an arm's lengh away from him. He kept his breathing slow and even as he let himself feel the flames around him. He closed his eyes once again, and used his mind and his connection with fire, feeling the power it held. Reaching out his hand he ran his fingertips through it, smiling slightly at the familiar tickle of flames against his skin. He hadn't really realized how much he'd missed this. Not that he'd used his abilities much when he was little, but he could remember his mother flipping out the first time he'd stuck his hand in the family fireplace. She later confided to him that he had told her that the fire had wanted him to do it.
The flames faltered slightly, growing a bit insubstansial. He hadn't remembered that. Curious now, he listened intently, but all he heard was the steady crackle of the remaining flames surrounding him. It was probably just some childish fancy of his youth that he'd told his mom anyway. Shaking off the past, he refocused on making the flames around him stronger and brighter. They expanded outward from him, growing in intensity. Daniel was careful to keep the fire away from his clothes, though. The last thing he needed was to try to make it back to his dorm room with nothing but a button up shirt on. While he and the room were fireproof, his clothing definitely was not. Focus, Daniel. He shook his head and clenched his fists. With an almighty burst outward, the flames expanded, nearly filling the gigantic room before puffing out of existence. For a long time, he just stood there. Then a grin slowly tugged at the corners of his mouth. Daniel: 1 Fire: 0.

One two three.' Silent footsteps made their way down the hall, bare feet walking rhythmically on tiptoe. Not that walking normally would have made much noise either, considering the simulation rooms did a fine job of blocking out hallway sounds. That did not deter Mallory from her strange dance past the row of doors, however, spinning in a single pirouette everything time she reached the number three.
The corridor seemed to be deserted, not a soul around but the odd, spinning blonde. This didn't seem to bother her either though. She was quite content to be the only thing disturbing the silence. Plus, she had a habit of making her own company. At the moment a rather moldy looking rock and a stuffed toy dog were floating down the hall behind her, seeming to move of their own accord.
Mallory would have continued on like this, happily oblivious to everything around her, had flickering light not drawn her attention. Wide, blue eyes focused on the small window of one of the sim room doors, her flowery steps halting as curiosity seized her. The room must have been occupied for light to be coming from it. But, what was the person inside doing to have created such a pretty glow? It almost reminded her of candle light dancing about on a wick. Her curiosity moved her forward.
The rock and dog came to settle themselves on either side of the girl's legs while stood on tiptoe at the door, trying to peer through the window. She pressed her face so close to it that her nose was actually smushed, turned up and mimicking a pig's snout. Her eyes, in turn, were as wide as ever as they peered inside the special room, searching out anything and everything they could discern within.
It seemed that there was only one person inside the room, an older boy or young man who could not be too far above her in age. He must have been playing with his power; either that or the simulation program had thought it was a good idea to try and catch him on fire. The whole room was aglow with the bright orange blaze, shadows dancing as they flickered on the walls. The fire seemed to be surrounding the boy, circling him much like a hunting carnivore preparing to close in on its prey. Or so it seemed to Mallory, who was watching with bated breath as the flames suddenly expanded, preparing for their final attack. She let out an audible gasp as they almost completely filled the room, shocked the moment they all vanished. The boy had staved off the mighty hunter.
In her eagerness to try and get a better look, the girl hadn't realized she'd placed her hand on the handle. Nor did she realize that these doors were not equipped with a proper lock in case someone was in need of unexpected assistance. Next thing she knew, the handle shifted under her weight and the door clicked open. Then she was falling, falling forwards until she landed hard on the ground, her palms and knees catching most of her wight. She could feel her two pets laughing behind her.
Mallory attempted to pick herself up then, running now pink hands over her skirt and knees before tugging down the sleeves of her blouse. For a brief moment she let her eyes wander completely around the room, looking for any residual traces of the fire. Then she fixed her big, blue eyes on the boy in the middle of the room, her expression quite unabashed as she stared at him in awe (not even a blush creeping up her cheeks from accidentally barging in on him). Her voice was just above a whisper, words of praise escaping her without much thought behind them. "That was... wow."

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYES if ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP nerina had been walking around the school, trying to find her way around. It was her second day here- her first had been spent lying on her new bed, crying and continually drenching everything with water- and she was ever so slightly lost, when she came across a girl. Not just any girl, but a girl with a toy dog and a rock floating behind her. Nina's jaw had dropped and she had kind of followed the girl around, staring at the floaty objects. As the girl had stopped, and come to a room (a big gym, by the looks of it) Nina had hid around a wall and watched as the girl had peeked in through the window, and unconsciously let herself in. The door had swung shut, the objects outside with the girl's kind-of-stalker.
Well, Nerina wasn't having that. She wanted to know what the amazing girl had been looking at. She stood and ran towards the door, not realising that it wouldn't stop her. She flew through the entrance in time to hear the girl say wow. "What?" Nerina said, looking from the girl to the boy, "What wow?" She didn't realise that she didn't know anyone, or that the girl probably had no clue who she was, or anything. She wanted to know what was going on!
... Then the reality sank in. She had just bumbled in on what could be a really intense moment. She had been following around a girl, and the girl probably thought that she was creepy. The boy probably didn't want any attention, and was really confused by her bursting through the doors. Also, to make the matter more awkward, she was rubbing her right thumb and finger together, and water was dripping from the digits onto the floor. Yikes. Nerina's cheeks flooded with colour and she mumbled, "Er, sorry... I, um, I just..." She bit her lip and looked down. At the steadily growing puddle. Ouch.
