Danny stood on the stadium field, his wings spread to let the wind play through them. He had finally gotten back to Anya about the practice, and they were supposed to meet at the field. Danny had figured this was the best place to do it - lots of open room and few obstacles to crash into. Except the goal posts...he frowned at the one of the far end of the field, trying to decide how great a problem it would pose. After a moment, he decided not a big enough one, and dismissed the worry. If he was proven wrong, he would deal with it then.
After a quick glance around that revealed the winged girl still not in sight, Danny tucked his wings back closer to his body, bent his knees, and then launched himself into the air. This was the harder technique to use for flying but he felt he needed the practice for both practical and personal reasons. (Besides, it looked cooler.) As soon as he was airborne, he began to follow the path of the running track. He let the air do most of the work without pushing himself very hard, using only an occasional beat to keep himself afloat. Until Anya showed up, he was just going to enjoy the feeling of being in the sky.

words // 000 // outfit // clicky // tagged // anyone spread your wings AND LET YOUR FEATHERS TOUCH THE SKY Anya stepped onto the field, taking in all of the surroundings. The place was pretty darn big and it was perfect for the two winged mutants to practice flying. In order to limit scrapes and cuts from failed landings Anya wore a light grey jacket with blue jeans. She hoped that if she did crash into the ground that at least she might not receive a gash in one of her limbs.
A soaring shape caught her eye and she noticed that it was Danny flying above the track field. She noted how he didn't exert energy by only flapping his wings with needed. She had looked some things up online about her wing shape and it came up that hers was most similar to an Albatross. When she researched more on it she found that her particular wing shape would allow her to hover easily in the air like a sea bird above the ocean. While this did make her flight a little slower than Danny's, it allowed her to glide with ease. And if she ever needed a quick burst of speed she could always fold her wings in closer to her body for a quick jump of speed. This did however cause her to dive closer to the ground so she tried to keep to her slower form of flight.
Anya whistled loudly, hoping that Danny would hear her. And if he couldn't hear her she was sure that he would be able to see her waving her arm around. She was nervous about her first flying lesson but eager at the same time, either way it was making her a bit of a jittery mess. notes // notes here notes here notes here |

Being left with nothing to do was generally a bad thing for Danny. It meant he had to entertain himself. Which meant he usually did something either stupid or dangerous. This time, it wasn't terribly dangerous, but he was intentionally trying what he had first worried about. That is, he was flying as close as he could to one of the goal posts - tucking in his wings so he could spiral between the two yellow poles, and then snapping open his wings on the far side and banking around.
He was looping way out into the field to try out a really dumb idea when he heard the whistle. He glanced down and saw a flash of red hair - Anya on the scene. Smiling, Danny dipped toward the ground, angling his wings and body to get them nearly perpendicular to the ground. The beat of his wings became faster and harder, pushing against the air to slow Danny's descent. Even so, he hit the ground hard enough to still need a few running steps before he stopped.
Once he'd loosed the momentum into the ground, he turned and jogged to the dancer's side, calling out as he went, "Hey, Anya! How was my landing?"

words // 000 // outfit // clicky // tagged // anyone spread your wings AND LET YOUR FEATHERS TOUCH THE SKY Anya watched Danny as he performed a spiral between the two goal posts and cringed, expecting him to hit but let out a breath when he didn't crash into one of the yellow poles. He really was a great flier and some of the stunts he was performing were way better than anything she had ever attempted.
He turned his head at her whistle and she stopped waving, as she knew that he had spotted her. Her brown eyes followed his movements, taking in the angle of his wings and noting his speed. She watched him as he pulled up, letting his body and wings form a right angle with the ground. He flapped his wings, slowing his speed. Anya dug her toes into the ground as the wing given off from Danny's wings hit her body. She took one step back, making sure she had a good grip on the grass.
Danny finally let his feet touch the ground and the onslaught of wind stopped. Anya tied up her now slightly messy hair up into a bun. It wasn't that much of an inconvenience though for she was going to pull it up so that it didn't get in her face when she was flying anyway. As Danny jogged over to Anya she heard him call out, "Hey, Anya! How was my landing?"
"Much better than anything I've ever done. Nice spiral by the way." Anya shook herself out and let her long wings shoot out behind her from the slits in the jacket over her shoulder blades. How she could even fit the long wings into her body was a miracle to her. She remembered something about the scientists saying that they had some unique folding mechanism that allowed the fings to fold up nicely like origami. Why she couldn't bend her wings like that out of her body had something to do with a strange chemical that caused the bones to harden once they contacted air. She smiled at the winged boy. "So, I'm ready teacher." notes // notes here notes here notes here |

"Thanks. It keeps me entertained." Despite his easy words, he couldn't ignore the small warmth in his chest and face that her words conjured up. Trying weakly to disguise it, he cleared his throat and ducked his head. Oh yeah, he was smoothness incarnate. The very epitome! ...Tsk, yeah right... The thought was accompanied by a mental sigh. He wasn't good with...okay, with girls in general, but particularly girls complimenting him... Pulling himself away from that thought, he focused instead on Anya's wings as they unfolded.
Anya had shown him one of her wings at the cafe, but it hadn't given him a real good idea of what they looked like. They were less cliche than his, he had thought that last time, and he liked that she had more than one color. (He thought of an old saying, something about variety and spices.) After another moment of admiring her wings, he turned his attention back to the girl's face.
"So, I'm ready teacher." He cringed a little bit at her words, laughing at the same time. "Don't call me teacher, it stresses me out." He punctuated his words with a joking wink, and then turned and glanced over the field again. This was pointless, but he was kind of putting off bringing up the next point. It only bought him a couple seconds, and then he had to turn back to the red head. "Okay, you're not gonna like this, but...I need to see what your landings look like. So I can see what we need to work on."

words // 571 // outfit // light grey jacket and skinny blue jeans // tagged // Danny spread your wings AND LET YOUR FEATHERS TOUCH THE SKY "Thanks. It keeps me entertained." She smiled but raised an eyebrow as he blushed and ducked his head. He was awkward yet so sweet at the same time, and it made a soft laugh escape from the Russian girl's mouth. She lifted her wings a few inches off the ground and walked over to Danny before placing a hand on his shoulder. "Relax." Her voice was calm and leveled and her smile seemed to frame her words.
She took a step back, removing her hand, and let him take a look at her wings so that he would know what he was dealing with. Her wings were longer than his, yet Danny's seemed wider and looked better for landing. Hers were some of the best wings to have when it came to staying up in the air with ease as they were very light, but that also meant that there was less force when she tried to slow herself to a landing. Anya then began to wonder if Danny had actually researched wing shapes like she did. She wasn't sure if anyone was as serious about not failing at she was and she had tried her best to get it down to a science. Maybe when she was older she would write a book: How to Not Fail, For Dummies. That sounded about right.
"Don't call me teacher, it stresses me out." She rolled her eyes yet retained her smile. "You'll do fine." It felt a little strange to be comforting someone who was about to teach her but it was the best approach she knew at the moment. "Okay, you're not gonna like this, but...I need to see what your landings look like. So I can see what we need to work on." Her smile vanished for a moment. This was exactly what she was dreading. Her mother's words began to float around in her head, 'To be a ballerina is to be perfection,' But what about a winged ballerina, what does that make me then?
Anya shook her head, allowing the distracting thoughts to disperse. The Russian girl let out a breath, stretching her wings out as far as they could go before folding them a little closer to her body. "Okay, I can do that . . . maybe." With one more breath she took off at a running start, her wings tucked in closer to her body. She ran for only about three seconds before pushing off the ground and unfurling her wings with a whoosh.
Her wings caught the air and she angled her wings so that she sliced through the air at a diagonal. She flew about half a lap above the track before deciding to land. Anya tried her best to replicate what Danny had done previously. But she lowered herself too much before pulling up perpendicular to the ground. This caused her feet to touch the ground before she had slowed her speed. Her arms did a sort of windmill motion and she quickly fanned out her wings to catch the wind and slowly steady herself. It was anything but a clean landing, but it was better than some of her past ones. Especially the ones where she faceplanted into the ground.
She cast a sheepish smile over to Danny and resisted the urge to fold her wings around herself. "Told you I'm not that good." Now it was her turn to blush. notes // none |

He tried to play it off with his smile, but he sort of doubted it was convincing. On the plus side, she seemed to have misinterpreted the blush as stress, not embarrassment. Taking that small victory, he nodded in thanks as Anya spread her wings to give him a better look. He began to wish he had studied wings and flight...instead, he had learned by trial and error. It had been effective...for him, at least.
He laughed at her reassurance, "I hope I do alright. Our friendship is kinda riding on it, isn't it?" Again, he smiled to show it was a joke - he hoped Anya thought it was too, loosing her as a friend was an upsetting thought. He really needed to stay away from these thoughts, Anya was going to think he was sick if his face didn't stop changing colors. Determined not to think about it, he focused on her expression. As soon as he'd asked to see her landing, he could see the cogs beginning to turn.
For a second, he wondered if he had asked too much.
And then she was tucking her wings in and agreeing. Danny stepped aside to give her room. She took a running start, and then airborne. Her wings were very different from Danny's, long and skinny...they even moved a little differently. He paced around a bit to get a good look at how her wings moved, and then stepped aside again to watch her landing. She ended on her feet, though, and he met her with a smile.
"Told you I'm not that good." He smiled at her words, and even more at her blush. She was cute when she blushed, he thought as he tried to smother his smile. "Hey, now, you're not on your face, and that's always a good place to start." Having said that, Danny let the smile slip from his face as he frowned thoughtfully. "Well...first off, you come in too quick. It's better to be a little too high and be swinging your legs down than the other way around." He spread his wings as he spoke, angling them, "You wanna keep your wings like this. Almost perpendicular to the ground, but parallel to your body. And then that'll change a little while you're flapping of course. Do you see what I mean, though?" | [atrb=width,100] words ,

words // 338 // outfit // light grey jacket and skinny blue jeans // tagged // Danny spread your wings AND LET YOUR FEATHERS TOUCH THE SKY "I hope I do alright. Our friendship is kinda riding on it, isn't it?" It was sweet how nervous he seemed about teaching her. She wasn't going to blame him even if she completely crashed into the ground. She had already crashed before so it wasn't like him helping would make it much worse. Plus, Danny's landings were already pretty exceptional and if Anya could get to the point where she could land like him she would at least be satisfied. "Don't worry, I won't hate you even if I slam into the goal post over there." She waved her hand over to where the two yellow poles lie at the end zone. "As painful as that would be." She smiled an easy smile, even at the thought of her flying into one of the goal posts.
After her landing she looked towards him for any sort of advice he may give her. "Hey, now, you're not on your face, and that's always a good place to start." Anya shrugged, she had improved a little since she had first tried but it still wasn't to a level where she thought she could be happy with it. "Well...first off, you come in too quick. It's better to be a little too high and be swinging your legs down than the other way around." Anya nodded, she knew that much already, but what did confuse her was how she could come in slower. "You wanna keep your wings like this. Almost perpendicular to the ground, but parallel to your body. And then that'll change a little while you're flapping of course. Do you see what I mean, though?" She examined as to how he was angling his wings. It was a good idea, and perhaps it could still work with her wing shape. She would just need to start doing it when she was a little higher off the ground so that she wouldn't slam into it. "Yeah, I think I get what your saying. Umm, should I try again?" notes // None |

He frowned, frustrated with himself. He'd never been really good at explaining things to people, and had always learned himself by being walked through. That, and falling down until he figured it out, of course. Just launching Anya into the air (as it were) and letting her crash didn't feel right, though...
He was still frowning when she asked if she should try again. Danny hesitated, and then nodded slowly, stepping back once again. "Yeah, I guess..." An idea popped into his head at the same moment, however, and he jumped forward, hands out to stop her. "Wait! I just thought of a better way to describe it! When you're landing, you want this part," he motioned along the trailing edge of her nearest wing, his fingertips brushing them slightly, "to move like you'd be sweeping the ground if you were low enough. The more of air you can...scoop, really; the more you'll slow yourself. And then you'll have plenty of time to swing your legs wherever you want."
Whether wording it differently would help or not, Danny couldn't be sure. He thought it made it sense, and was pretty sure it would work for her as it did for him. ...But with all the extra length to her wings, he couldn't be sure she wouldn't kill all her speed that way and just drop out of the air. (Though, he had to admit, he had never seen this happen to any bird, and that made it seem unlikely...) Satisfied, he stepped back to let her try again, offering and encouraging smile as he did.

words // 440 // outfit // already described in previous posts // tagged // Danny spread your wings AND LET YOUR FEATHERS TOUCH THE SKY "Yeah, I guess..." Anya started to tuck in her wings and was about to take the running start she normally did before taking off when Danny suddenly spoke again. "Wait! I just thought of a better way to describe it! When you're landing, you want this part," She felt his fingers brush against the tip of her wing, and she almost felt goosebumps start to form underneath the feathers. Anya would have blushed but Danny wouldn't be able to see the goosebumps, which definately helped. "to move like you'd be sweeping the ground if you were low enough. The more of air you can...scoop, really; the more you'll slow yourself. And then you'll have plenty of time to swing your legs wherever you want." Her eyes seemed to light up as a spark of understanding shone inside her. "Oh okay, I get it now . . . now I just hope that I can perfect that."
She stretched out her wings, letting them loosen up before tucking them closer to her body. Her feet hit the ground and she performed the same running start as last time, allowing herself to eventually soar up into the air. Anya only stayed up in the air for a little bit though as she wanted to give the landing a try. The sixteen year old pivoted in the air and aimed for the same landing spot. The girl let her wings move so that they were perpendicular to the ground. The air hit the wings hard, pushing her slightly backwards, causing her to cringe with the sudden pressure. She realized that she probably should have let her wings ease into the new form, instead up just flipping them up so quickly. Either way she was slowing, and she found that she didn't even really need to flap like Danny had as her wings were long enough to catch quite a lot of air.
She occasionally let her wings slip back into a parallel form, letting her move closer to the ground. But she would make sure to move them back so that they were perpendicular to the ground before she picked up speed. Her feet suddenly touched the ground and while she hadn't come to a complete stop she had slowed down enough that she only had to take a couple steps. The Russian girl let her wings remain fanned out for a moment until she had come to a complete stop.
She looked around, checking to make sure that she really had landed without dying. Once she was sure that she was alive and well she smiled over at Danny, "How was that?" notes // None |

Anya's incredible wings spread, and folded back in as the girl ran for her take off. Once again, as soon as Anya was in the air, Danny positioned himself to get an optimal view of her flight and landing. She turned and started a new landing, making Danny hold his breath. The moment of truth...
Anya barely flapped her wings, and at first that made Danny nervous. It took only a moment for him to realize - maybe because of the difference in her wings - that she didn't need to flap as much as he did. Intrigued, he watched the way she shifted her wings - first upright, then flat, then upright again. The descent was a good one, very smooth, and she hit the ground with only enough leftover momentum to make her stumble a few steps.
Success! Danny gave a whoop of excitement, throwing his hands into the air, and matched her smile with one of his own. "That was great!" He could tell from the look on her face that she knew that, and he shook his head in surprise. "You figured it out right away; I'm impressed. All that's left now is figuring out the specifics for you." In some ways, Danny was disappointed that she'd learned so quick - now he wouldn't have a reason to hang out with Anya. She knew that he was happy for her, but there was a twinge of dissapointment in his voice. It was like he was sad that their training session was almost over. Anya was happy that she wouldn't slam into the ground everytime she tried to fly but she too didn't really want the session itself to end.
"Yeah, I didn't think I would get it that fast either." The Russian girl walked over to him. "But I had a great teacher to help me." She smiled sweetly, hoping that perhaps whatever was bugging him would vanish. "And I could always have help improving, besides, it's nice to have a flight buddy. Maybe you can teach me some of those fancy tricks you were doing earlier." She moved her finger around in a spiral, similar to the trick he had done through the goal posts.
She glanced back up at the sky, it really was a beautiful day and she didn't feel like just walking back to her dorm room where Maddie may be lying in wait. "Umm, do you wanna fly right now? It's kind of fun now that I don't have to worry so much about crashing." Anya mentally crossed her fingers, this day was one of the best she had had for a while and she didn't want it to end so soon. notes // None |

On top of that she was suggesting that they spend more time together, extend the lesson to include tricks. Riding his wave of euphoria, Danny nodded with a smile. "Sure, if you think you really want to. It would be a shame not to actually exercise your new, mad skills." With a wink, he turned to motion at the sky before smiling over his shoulder. "I like showing people how to do things, instead of just explaining it. So...?" He waited only long enough for her acknowledgement before bending his knees and launching into the air.
The wind slipping through the wings in his feather always felt so good...For a moment, Danny closed his eyes and enjoyed the feeling. It was only a couple seconds, though, and then he opened them once more and banked in a wide circle to allow Anya time to join him. Once she had, though, he wasn't sure he could show her the trick without crashing; having the pretty redhead there with him was very distracting. Trying valiantly to think of something else - anything else - he suddenly recalled something Anya had promised at the cafe. Smirking slightly, he glanced at her, "You still need to teach me some coordination on the ground, you know? Maybe you can teach me to dance for the Masquerade that's coming up." Anya smiled and called after him, "You're such a show off!" She stood on the ground for a moment, hands on hips, smiling up at the winged boy. When she got ready for her own take off, instead of trying to match the way he launched himself from the earth she took her usual running start. She figured that she would try the same lift off at a later date.
With her wings outstretched she glided over to him, diving underneath him in order to avoid hitting him in mid flight. The sixteen year old rose once more, this time so that she was on his right side. The smile remained on her face and she looked over at Danny, but made sure to occasionally glance in front of herself so not to create some sort of air catastrophe.
Anya caught Danny's smirk and turned towards him, curious as to what he was going to say. "You still need to teach me some coordination on the ground, you know? Maybe you can teach me to dance for the Masquerade that's coming up." She smiled, having almost forgotten about the dance. It sounded like a vague invitation to the dance itself, but she decided to not jump to such conclusions and make a fool out of herself. "Of course I could do that. You would have to stop by the dance room though . . . wearing tights." A grin crossed her face and she held it for a moment, just to see his reaction. "I'm kidding of course. No tights for you, and we could practice anywhere. Not like you need an actual dance floor to dance." She laughed, waiting to see his expression. notes // None |

Partly because he didn't think she'd believe him, and mostly because she was right - he had kinda been showing off. The red-head ran across the field and leapt into the air, joining him after a moment. Danny watched her out of the corner of his eye, appreciating for a moment how pretty she was. As soon as he realized the thought had crossed his mind, he felt himself flush, and let his wings falter so he wobbled and hid his face. Where did that come from? His face still a little warm, he glanced over at Anya, hoping whatever she was saying would be sufficiently distracting.
And it was. "Of course I could do that. You would have to stop by the dance room though . . . wearing tights." For just a split second, he was at a complete loss for words. When his brain began to function once more, he smirked, determined to call her bluff. "Well, alright, I'm there. In fact, I'm already wearing my tights." To illustrate his words, he reached down to pluck at his jeans. He was pleased to find that he managed to keep a straight face while he said. After a moment, however, he cracked, smiling widely at her next words. He chuckled ruefully, "I dunno...I think I need a lot more than a dance floor to be able to dance. I'm really not a good dancer." | [atrb=width,100] words ,
