The muffled thunder of hooves were doing a fine job of churning up dirt. This morning, when they'd first come out to the large, outdoor ring, the ground had been pristine and raked, untouched after the most recent bout of maintenance. All good things were not to last, however, and Megan was certainly not the type to care about ruining a perfectly nice plot of dirt. It was a riding ring after all, and at the moment she had wanted nothing more than to ride.
So, for the last hour or so, she and her pretty, bay, Morgan gelding had been tearing up the dirt. It was dry but loose in the summer heat, and not too firm as the horse cantered about. It had been a few days (which felt like a lifetime considering Meg tried to get down to the stables almost every day) since she'd had the time for riding with classes having started up so today was feeling extra special. The sky was cloudless and it was still early - barely ten in the morning. They had the whole place to themselves and were enjoying a nice and easy workout before taking a leisurely trail ride.
King (short for Kingdom Come) had been trained in hunter/jumper and eventing since he was a foal. Meg had won him in a raffle when she and her sisters had visited one of Vermont's many horse farms and ever since then he had become her most prized possession. While she didn't compete him outside of a local show, the woman had always done her best to ride him as frequently as she could and keep him well practiced in the disciplines he loved.
Currently the pair were making a large loop around the outside of the ring, the pace a slow, collected canter. No jumps were currently set up in the ring's center, but that was fine and actually to their advantage. Meg had actually been working on a bit of dressage over the course of their session, a better part of the hour spent on movement and footwork. After they finished a few more laps it would be time for a cool down, and then they would hit the trails. That was, of course, providing distractions did not suddenly present themselves.
