The inviting scent of a variety of nicely cooked meals filled Alex’s nose the moment she stepped into the diner. It was just what she needed, some time away from Silas and a chance to be surrounded by delicious food that the academy’s cafeteria couldn’t offer her. Actually, it was Alex’s full intention to order every single item off the menu that sounded remotely appealing to the taste buds. Her plan was to fill the void that was left behind when her powers were absorbed with food, lots and lots of food.
For two full days, Alex locked herself in her room, not even leaving to attend class. She was too afraid to leave the safe confines of it in fear of coming in contact with germs and being unable to fight them off or falling down the stairs and being unable to heal a concussion or twisted ankle. For two full days, Alex lived without her ability to heal herself and lived with the fear of getting sick or injured. But Alex realized that she couldn’t quit living her life just because of this setback, after all, her power would eventually return to her. It was just a matter of time.
Her mind wandered to the boy from the forest, Seth, and a frown immediately formed on her face. She wasn’t upset with the fact that he absorbed her powers, it was her fault after all. But she was becoming increasingly annoyed by the fact that he still had her gift. During the 48 hours she stayed locked in her room, she did a little research on power absorbers and learned that they generally didn’t hold on to someone else’s powers for more than just a couple hours, if even that long. Despite her impatience, she still couldn’t bring herself to begrudge Seth or let any of the blame befall him. “Ugghh,” Alex let out an exasperated sigh as she seated herself in an empty booth and waited for a waitress to come with the menu.
“Good afternoon, are you expecting anyone else or just a menu for one today?” Alex looked up with a smile at the sound of a welcoming voice and kindly responded with a hint of embarrassment, “No it’ll just be me.” The waitress set a menu in front of her before asking, “What would you like to drink?” Without a second thought Alex immediately responded, “Just a cup of coffee please.” As the waitress left, Alex immediately flipped open the menu and perused her options. Apple pie, must get. Bacon cheeseburger and fries, must get. Hmmm… Caesar salad? Nope. Banana split, must get. Grilled cheese sandwich, must get.
As she glanced up from the menu, a familiar face seated a couple booths away caught her attention and brought a smile to her face. Serinity! Oh wait…Why does she look so sad? This was the first time Alex had seen her roommate in the past two days, despite the fact that they were both in the same suite. Frowning, Alex got up from her booth and collected her belongings, including the menu, and headed over to where her roommate was seated. “Hey, mind if I join you?” Alex’s voice came softly as she sat down across from Serinity. “Are you okay? You seem so glum. Let’s be glum together.”
Alex turned around to see the waitress heading to the table she sat at before with her coffee, but managed to grab her attention. When the waitress came over, Alex smiled apologetically, “Sorry, I saw my friend here and thought it’d be nice if we sat together.” The waitress carefully placed the hot cup of coffee in front of Alex before speaking, “Not a problem, are you ready to order?” Alex looked up at Serinity and wondered if her roommate was, but then decided that she was too hungry to wait either way. “Yes! I’ll have one bacon cheeseburger with fries, hold the tomatoes please. And a grilled cheese sandwich, an apple pie..” Alex’s words trailed as she forgot the rest of what she wanted and she immediately consulted the menu for some help, “Oh! And today’s soup special, an order of onion rings, and a banana split. But could you bring that a little later please? I don’t want it to melt.”
Alex watched as the waitress jotted away at her notepad, a look of frustration forming on her face as she asked Alex to repeat her order. Twice. Once the waitress was finally done taking down Alex’s order, she reluctantly turned to look at the blonde, her expression looked as if she was praying that her order would be simple. “And for you ma’am?”

. so i go insane like i always do AND I CALL YOUR NAME, SHES A LOT LIKE YOU
Seth stared at the blue glow surrounding his hand with a mixture of rapture and fear. Not afraid of the power itself, but afraid that any moment, he would feel the rush dim and he would be left empty again, like he always was. He closed his fist, extinguishing the light and absorbing it back into his body. He smirked. The past two days had been nothing like the torture that made up the rest of his life. It had been heaven on earth, if there could even be one. Power at his beck and call. Sure, it wasn't as destructive as he might have liked, but he found the power of healing could come in quite useful when he was out goofing off to get an adrenaline high. The kicker was he hadn't needed the adrenaline, the power itself had kept him up in the sky far longer than it ever could.
For two whole days he'd escaped from the feelings of desperation that usually haunted him. For two days, he was some semblance of normal that he'd never been. Seth didn't want to give that up, not for anything. Time though, time would draw it away from him. They were his to borrow, never to keep. One thought flashed through his mind, just one more day… Surely he could keep it that much longer, he'd already gone two. She'd already gone two. Alex. The girl he'd met in the forest that night, the true owner of the powers he currently possessed. He refused to feel guilty about it. He went his whole life searching for just a taste of what she had everyday of her life. She could survive without it for a few days. Maybe, she'd learn a little bit of what it was like to be him. Not that he was searching for her to understand, he'd long since given up on anyone understanding him.
Shaking off the depressing thoughts, he stood up from the bench that he had been sitting on for the past two hours. Life was going more slowly lately and Seth couldn't have been happier. More time to revel that he'd kept the powers this long. He'd figured out the key, her powers were gentle, a healing ability, and those powers with a gentler touch were far easier to hold onto. He'd have to find more abilities like hers to absorb, maybe then, he wouldn't be so subject to the withdrawals. He stretched, glancing around the downtown area. It was his first time out of Silas Academy since he'd arrived. The administration hadn't wanted him to leave at first, but he managed to convince them that he wouldn't do anything, that and he'd left before they could detain him. Though he figured with the people and powers on staff, if they hadn't wanted him to go, he would have been stopped.
His gaze was quickly drawn to the little diner just across the street, his stomach rumbling, reminding him that he'd eaten next to nothing yet. He strode across the street, barely paying attention to the cars as their raced by him, honking their horns. He shot them a lazy grin, as if daring them to hit him. He'd like to see them try, see their faces when he got up without a scratch. Unfortunately, none of the drivers were willing to let that happen. Choice words filled the air, until finally Seth was on the opposite side of the street. He gave them all a smug wave, before turning and disappearing into the diner with satisfaction.
Seth nodded at a waitress and she hurried over to him. "Yes sir?" Her voice was polite and airy and it immediately grated against Seth's nerves. "Get me a BLT with fries and a cup of mountain dew." She looked at him for a moment. "Sir, where will you be sitting?" Seth turned away from her, scanning the small diner for a place to sit. His gaze landed on two girls. Familiar. He bit back the growing smirk. "Right there." He motioned to the table. The waitress cast him a disproving look, obviously believing him to be the guy who was late, but hurried off to fulfill his order.
He walked up to the table with all the confidence that he had gained in his life. He wasn't afraid to talk to them, even knowing that both of them probably didn't want to see him. Seth was having a good day, and he was going to have some fun, even if it was at someone's expense. He raised an eyebrow upon reproach, his smile lopsided and eyes lit up mischievously. Without waiting for a hello or an invitation, that he knew would never come, he plopped down in one of the chairs at the table. "Ladies." He leaned forward, eyes on Rini. "You're lookin' a little down sweetheart, what, the boyfriend decide you weren't worth hanging around for?" He sat back in his chair, comfortable, even at a table with people who showed an obvious dislike for him.
Almost warily, he glanced towards Alex, before quickly looking back away from her. He could tease and goad Rini into a fight, but he really didn't want to fight with Alex. She was probably ready to fight with him though, since he still had her powers. He thought about making a crack, but remained silent on the issue. Though, since the pair were friends, he wouldn't be surprised if Alex jumped to the rescue. Though she didn't seem to be the most sarcastic and biting person he'd met. He raised an eyebrow, the poster boy for calm arrogance.

Serinity checked her watch for what must have been the hundredth time in the past thirty minutes. Daniel was late. Pretty darn late, too. Sighing, the blonde took another sip of her watered down, almost empty coke with a distasteful expression. The waitress came by and offered her a polite, sympathetic smile, “Would you care for another one miss?” she asked. Serinity didn’t bother looking up at her. Instead, her eyes were focused on her watch once more. Ok, I’ll give him another two hours. If he doesn’t show by then, I guess that means he wasn’t interested after all… He… He wouldn’t have set me up would he? Biting her lip the blonde murmured to the waitress who took off to get her another coke. “This sucks,” Rini said dejectedly.
A voice was suddenly beside her, talking to her. But it wasn’t a male’s voice. Surprised and curious Serinity looked up to see Alex siding into the booth. “Ugh, yeah sure,” she fumbled around for words even though the girl was already sitting down. Alex plunged on and asked if Rini was ok to which she blushed and directed her eyes elsewhere. “Yeah, I’m fine. What are you upset about? Scratch that, where have you been? I haven’t seen you in like two or three days. Welcome back to the world of the outside world.” The smile Serinity offered Alex was pathetic and didn’t even come close to reaching her eyes. Well, these next two hours of waiting will be a lot less hard now.
Alex was already calling the waitress back over, Serinity’s coke in her hand. After the dark beverage was placed down, Rini took another sip glad to have the real thing instead of some watered down knock-off. So her roommate was here to eat? No biggy, the dinner was a good place to catch lunch on the weekends. As the list of ordered items grew, Serinity openly stared at Alex in complete surprise. She was ordering half the menu and then some!
“Oh, nothing. I’m fine thank you,” Rini mumbled with a slight smile. The waitress sighed in relief and trotted off before Alex decided to throw in a tub of hash browns or something. Chuckling, Serinity couldn’t help by say, “Think you ordered enough?” It wasn’t said to be mean, but to be playful. The blonde figured her roommate could take a joke. Besides that, it might prompt the other to give an explanation as to why she was ordering so much.
Grey blue eyes flickered over to the door after checking her watch again. Daniel was still a no show. With every passing minute, her nerves bundled tighter and tighter. She had to force herself not to just fall into a state of blubbering like an idiot in front of everyone else. That was best done alone. It shouldn’t be done at all! Why should she cry over some stupid boy? Taking up the straw, Serinity swirled it around in her coke before realizing something. When she had looked up, someone was heading their way. Glancing over again Serinity swore under her breath, “Damnit! What’s he doing here,” she growled looking in the opposite direction bluntly ignoring the approaching Seth. Maybe he would just keep walking. Gah, just having him near by irritated her.
The next thing Serenity knew, stupid Seth was sitting his rear right down in a seat across from her. The girl tried sooooo hard to just keep looking away, but his words soon filled her head bouncing around inside. “Don’t you pretend like you know what’s going on, jerk!” Rini snapped angrily glaring at him now. Her head had whipped around so fast she wondered if she had just gotten whiplash or not. She really should come up with a better word than ‘jerk’. Seth had probably been called that too many times to count thus making it ineffective. Glowering, Serinity shoved her straw into her mouth to take a sip. The plastic hit the top of her mouth biting into her skin. Placing the cup down, she continued to fiercely look at Seth refusing to acknowledge the sting on the top of her mouth. “Don’t you have something better to do? Like steal candy from a baby or something!” Seth would totally do something like that.

words // 796 // outfit // clicky boy with a coin, T H E N M A K I N G A W I S H , A N D T O S S E D I N T H E S E A Daniel paced around his dorm room, pulling on clothes just to discard them a moment later. The floor was littered with his failed attempts at dressing himself and he was growing rather frustrated with the situation. He didn't really have many clothes to go through and he feared that he would soon run out, although there was no way he was going to show up at the diner without at least being presentable. It's just the diner. Casual. It didn't matter how many times he reminded himself of the fact. He still wanted to impress Serinity and he didn't exactly know how to do that. Glancing at the clock on the nightstand, he grimaced. He'd have to make up his mind, and soon. Daniel dug around in the closet with his eyes closed and told himself that he'd wear whatever he grabbed first. Opening his eyes, he considered his choice. Not bad.
Fully clothed, he grabbed his wallet and nearly ran out the door without shoes on. It was a strange thing. He'd been anticipating his date with Rini for days now, but he was still running behind. It gave him a rare glimpse into why girls took so long to get ready and he thought that next time (if there was a next time like he hoped), that he'd start getting his act together sooner. Daniel skidded back across the floor, snatched his shoes, and hastily put them on before dashing back out the door.
He'd thought long and hard about how he'd be getting to Willowbrook. Normally when he wanted to get away from the school he would just hitch a ride with someone who was already going. This time, he had been planning on asking Professor Miller if he could possibly borrow his car, but had chickened out at the last minute. There was no way he was riding a bike, even if he could find one on short notice. He couldn't even ask Shiloh for a ride, because he didn't have a car, either. With those depressing thoughts for company, he headed out of the school and started walking down the road that would take him to Willowbrook. He kept checking his phone every few steps, as if he could make time stop long enough for him to get there.
One hour and two hitched rides later, he found himself staring at the outer doors to the Willowbrook diner. Breathe, Daniel. She's just a girl. Yeah, right. Serinity Dawson wasn't just anything. He looked at his phone one last time, a lead weight in his gut. He was a half hour late, and a great deal of his mind was occupied with worries that Rini had left already, thinking that he'd stood her up. It was a tempting idea to sneak in the back way to see if she was there instead of just walking in and looking around like an idiot, but he didn't want to sneak around like a thief... even if he did know how. One exceedingly deep breath later, he pushed open the door and walked inside as a bell chimed over his head.
Blue eyes scanned the room looking for Serinity, expecting to see her sitting at a table alone, but that's not what he found. His brow wrinkled in momentary confusion at the sight of her sitting with Seth and a girl who he thought was her roommate, Alex. Rini didn't look happy, and he didn't know whether it was because he was late or because of the additions to the table. He was sincerely hoping for the latter theory. After entertaining and discarding the idea of acting like he was on time, he cautiously approached the table. He couldn't help lighting up a little as he got closer, excited at the prospect of being with Rini even if they weren't alone. "Hello. Sorry I'm late." He wished he'd thought to bring her a gift of some sort, even though he had no idea what she would like.
His eyes slid to Seth and Alex. Part of him appreciated that they were there to keep Rini company while she waited, but the other part of him wished they'd go find something else to do now that he was there. In the end, he decided to be polite by nodding to them with a smile before turning his attention back to Rini. "I tried to get here as fast as I could. The trip took longer than I expected." He wasn't about to admit that he was too broke to afford a car and had hitchhiked the entire way, but he wasn't in the habit of lying to people, either. Unconsciously, he rubbed his palms on his thighs, feeling distinctly awkward.

Alex noticed Serinity’s reaction to her question and decided not to press the issue any further. But when the questions turned to her, the girl was momentarily at a loss for words before letting out a soft sigh. “It’s a very complicated and long story. But in short, my powers were absorbed by this one kid, totally my fault, and I’ve been too chicken to leave my room because I’m afraid I’ll die.” She nodded her head slowly, letting the words sink in and realizing how ridiculous it sounded. She was somewhat prideful that she managed to gather the courage to leave her room, but then again, own can only stay holed up in one spot for so long. “But now I’m insanely hungry, and food always makes me feel better.
After placing her order, Alex turned to Serinity with a smile, wondering what her roommate would choose off of the menu. When she declined the waitress, Alex’s eyebrow’s furrowed slightly and she began to ponder. Wait? Is she? Noooo… But why else would she be sitting here and not ordering? Nooooo... Maybe that’s why she’s so upset? Alex highly doubted that her roommate was being stood up by a date. Only a fool would do that. The girl shrugged off the idea, confident that she was just jumping to conclusions. Maybe she isn’t hungry yet.
When her roommate commented about the amount of food she ordered, Alex forced a laugh and replied in a similarly joking manner, “Ha Ha! Actually, I was hoping you’d order the other half of the menu, but now I see that I’ll have to do that myself!” The girl was smiling, she honestly enjoyed being around her roommate and was glad that she had a sense of humor. “I know this may sound bad, but I’m going to try to fill this hole that’s been left in me with food, just plug it right up and move on with my life.” This part Alex was actually serious about. The girl realized that it would take a while for her order to be brought out, so she just made herself comfortable and settled into the booth.
As the pair fell silent, Alex began to sip at her coffee that was now cool enough to drink. Ick, I forgot sugar. The brunette picked out several packets of sugar from the holder at the center of the table and ripped the tops off before pouring the sweet substance into her coffee. As she stirred her drink, Alex looked up and saw Serinity glancing between her watch and the door. Her eyebrows furrowed again as she contemplated her first assumption, that Serinity was waiting for someone, someone who was either going to be terribly late or who would not show up at all.
Nearly choking on her beverage at the sudden sound of Serinity swearing, Alex carefully put her drink down and followed the blonde’s gaze to the approaching boy. Once she realized who it was, Alex quickly looked away, her thoughts mimicking Serinity’s exact words. What is he doing here? He’s the last person I want to see right now. When Seth plopped down in the booth right next to her, Alex automatically scooted closer in towards the wall. She was trapped. Just ignore him and maybe- Before Alex could even finish her thought, her attention was dragged back to the table at Seth’s derisive words directed at her roommate.
Alex’s jaw dropped and she stared at Seth for a long second before dragging her gaze to the blonde across the table. This guy. He must truly be an idiot with a death wish. Ever since the first day she met Serinity, Alex made sure to be careful not to irritate the girl, especially when she was already upset over something. At the blonde’s reaction, Alex was even more confused on whether or not she was waiting for someone. But what interested the girl even more was the resentment that Serinity held against Seth. It obviously stemmed from an incident that happened before now.
“Don’t you have something better to do? Like steal candy from a baby or something!” At Serinity’s jibe towards Seth, Alex couldn’t help but smirk and throw in, “Or give Alex back her powers?” Her frustration over the situation was only slightly evident in her tone; she tried to keep it somewhat playful. Alex momentarily glanced up at Seth’s face before immediately turning her attention to her coffee. She lifted it to her lips and sipped at it, before nearly choking on it again at the sound of an apologetic voice.
Alex placed her cup back on the table, staring incredulously at the boy who was apologizing to Serinity for being late. Only a fool… It took a moment for Alex to realize it, but she and Seth were intruding on Serinity’s date with the other boy. Oh crap. The girl cleared her voice and prepared to excuse herself from the table, “Well uhmm, it was nice talking to-”
“One bacon cheeseburger, no tomato, with fries. Grilled cheese sandwich, apple pie, soup special, and onion rings.” The healer was forced to settle back into her seat as the waitress placed her order in front of her on the table before bustling off to the kitchen again. For a moment she just sat there, biting her lower lip and staring at all of the food. It nearly occupied the entire table. It’s not too late to switch tables. When Serinity and the boy had their attentions turned to each other, Alex forcefully nudged Seth’s side with her elbow before muttering, “Hey, scoot it. We need to move.” The girl was hoping that Seth would comply, but she was beginning to get a taste of his nature and wasn’t expecting him to get up and move tables without a fight.
