Heavy yet steady breaths could be heard as Alex jogged through Pinehurst forest on the warm summer evening. Golden rays shined across the forest from the west and danced on the trunks of the trees. From the looks of it the sun would be setting within the hour and the forest wasn’t exactly the ideal place to be when alone at night. The healer would often go running on a trail she found in the large forest after her classes were out, but today she stayed in the lab a little longer to help an underclassman with their chemistry lab assignment. She’d never turn down the opportunity to help someone out, especially in a subject she was so passionate about and excelled in.
For a full five minutes Alex broke out into a full on sprint. Since her body had the ability to heal itself, her muscles didn’t cramp up as easily from the formation of lactic acid during anaerobic exercise. Running and swimming were the only forms of exercise that Alex truly enjoyed. Other sports that required hand eye coordination and strategy were extremely difficult for her, so she tended to shy away from them. She loved sprinting through the forest, whizzing by the trees, striding over roots, and just being surrounded by nature.
Alex slowed to a stop when she came upon a particularly large oak tree. She spent a few minutes stretching out her muscles, using the trunk of the tree for support. Her breaths were still heavy as she sat down on a large root near the base of the tree, leaning back and resting her head on the trunk. She wasn’t too far from the academy. She planned her course so that she could walk for about ten minutes and be out of the forest and back on the school grounds. Ugghhhh I have loads of studying to do once I get back. I wish I could just stay out here for a while. She let her eyes shut for a few minutes as she relaxed and relished the tranquility of the forest, pushing all thoughts of school out of her mind for the moment.
(OOC: Sorry if this isn't much to work with! I really couldn't come up with much else D:)

It had been simple really, he had needed an escape. Killian had been asleep in the room over and although Seth would be loathe to admit it, he didn't want to keep his room mate up by pacing around his room. Then again, the possibility of attempting to break down the door that divided them in order to absorb Killian's power… it was too much for Seth to take. Naturally, Seth had chosen to leave. To get away from the temptation. Maybe a little walk in the fresh air would do him some good, calm his nerves and push back the insatiable desire for power. Anything to push it away, if only for a moment.
He lifted a hand, curled in a fist, to his mouth, stifling a yawn. The moody teen wanted nothing more than to get some sleep. His own power was a furnace burning inside him, pain swelling outward, pushing him forward. onward to the next goal. The next conquest. He gritted his teeth together, feeling his head pound as a headache began. He couldn't deal with this not now. Desire flickering in his eyes, consuming his every thought. Just for a taste, a small sliver of what he couldn't ever be, not on his own. He was dependent, living on what he could steal from others. He was a thief, just like everyone always assumed.
A pebble skittered across his path, just outside the dorm building. His own brown eyes caught on the shining gaze of someone else. Power hung in the air, tantalizing him, a ghost on the breeze, a scent, a welcome presence. Just a little closer. A little closer and you'll have it. That precious taste. Power. He reached out a hand and they jerked back, undeterred, he lunged forward. His hand slapped across their bare arm. His pupils dilated, eyes glazing over, hands curling into fists, bracing himself. The rush, the beautiful rush. Nothing else mattered. He ignored the cowering form of the other student. They were inconsequential after all, a mere prop in the game that was his life.
The power felt strange, foreign on his tongue. Bitter and revile, he gagged, coughing and spluttering, gasping for a breath as his own saliva burned in his mouth. Eyes wide, he reeled away, dashing towards the opening in the forest, away form prying eyes. The fire crept up his throat, scorching and smoldering, content to leave a trailing path of blisters. Fumes spilled from his chapped, parted lips. He wheezed, clawing at his chest as the smoke began filling his lungs. He couldn't control it. Weakness. The thought flashed through his mind with a hiss. You're weak! He hit his knees, scrabbling at the dirt viciously with his hands, trying to find purchase, to distract himself. He barely noticed the cuts on his fingers and hands.
With every effort, he spat, forcing it from his body. It sizzled in the dirt, burning a clean hole straight through for a foot, stone showing from the quarter sized opening. He felt something drip from his eyes and with a growing panic, saw the world fade to black, as if a lens had been placed over his eyes. A small moan of pain fell from his lips, as acid burned lines of scarlet down his cheeks. He heard the sound of breath and he felt the power in the air. Another one. "Make…" His voice broke, he beat a fist against the dirt. "the burning stop. Please." Desperate but sincere, the best anyone was going to get from him.

The sound of one experiencing significant physical pain reached the young healer’s ears and her eyes immediately opened. Again she heard the voice and the words carried with it confirmed that someone was hurt. Alex was on her feet, searching for the injured boy with urgency pulsing through her body. In her three years at the academy, Alex had never heard a voice with pain saturating it to such a high degree. Her heart pounded heavily in her chest as her eyes fell upon the form of a young man lying face down on the forest floor about twenty feet away from the tree was she resting at.
Without a second of hesitation Alex ran to his side and knelt on the ground next to him, trying to determine what his injuries were. From the position he was in it was hard to tell, but she noted that he was still conscious. She wasted no time turning him over onto his back, but what she saw shocked her. Acid burns marred his cheeks, lips, and eyes. Surface injuries would be an easy fix, but what worried her most was what could be happening internally and the potential of permanent loss of vision.
Alex lifted her right hand and gently placed them over his eyes. A light blue aura formed around her hand and pulsed as it grew in intensity and size. Alex’s calm and smooth voice then explained to the injured young man what she was doing, “Please don’t be afraid, I’m here to help you. My name is Alex, I’m a student at Silas Academy and I’m a healer. I need you to relax and try not to move.” As she said this, she gently opened his mouth her other hand to see if there was internal damage. Alex hissed at the sight –the flesh inside was raw and covered with blisters. After a few seconds she felt a burning sensation on the fingertips of the hand that had touched his mouth, but shrugged off the pain, it would be dulled in a moment.
She then willed the healing energy to take to her left hand as well and removed her right hand from his eyes. His eyesight should be spared, but I’ll have to spend more time on that later. The ragged and weak sound of his breaths snagged her attention and indicated that the damage had reached his lungs as well. Alex bit her lip, wishing that she had noticed this earlier so she could tend to his lungs sooner. She wanted to tend to his mouth to at least help ease the pain there, but his lungs wouldn’t hold out much longer. “Sorry about this, but direct contact is most effective.” Alex quickly yet gently tugged the young man’s shirt over his head and tossed it to the side.
Alex summoned as much of the energy as she could and her hands on his chest. Instead of trying to keep the energy on her hands as she did with his eyes, she tried to project it into his body as much as she could. She could feel the pulse growing stronger as she focused on pushing the energy out of her hands. Once Alex felt she had good control over the amount of energy, she slowly moved her hands around, trying to ensure that the energy hit every part of his lungs. When his lungs are stable I’ll move up and take care of his trachea and oropharynx, then the oral cavity. “Don’t talk if it hurts to much, but if you can it would be helpful. How are you hanging in there? Where does it hurt the most?" Alex continued to work on his lungs, but she wasn't sure how much more energy she could produce. Sweat once again beaded on her forehead as she pushed herself to keep up the steady flow of energy.

He hissed as his body was jerked over on his back. Every one movement was amplified with the intensity of pain. His body arched and shook as his powers tried to expel what he had unwittingly absorbed. Not strong enough. He thought himself skilled with the use of his powers, but they were no where near developed enough to absorb the abilities of acidic emission. A scream bubbled in his throat but the blisters would not allow it, he swallowed it, agony contorting his face into a mask of what he usually looked like. Nothing helped and he barely noticed the touch of her hands on his clothes. Delirious from the pain, his eyelids fluttered, eyes rolling back and showing white. As he shook and beat a fist feebly against the ground, it wasn't far fetched to think the teenager possessed of some demon he couldn't fight off. He groaned, lips moving, dry and cracked with blood now running down his chin and dripping into his mouth. He gagged and coughed, his throat aflame with renewed irritation.
Light flickered across his closed eyes, the first sign that perhaps this blindness would only be temporary. A soothing power coating the red, calming it, sedating it into submission. The rest of his body screamed, but for that one moment, he was able to revel in the feeling of relief that covered his eyes. A healer. He fought to control his body, to obey her, the one time that he would submit to orders from anyone. His muscles clenched, contracted due to the pain that ravaged through his body in a wild torrent. Through clenched teeth, hot breath streamed out as dark and thick as smoke. Unwillingly, he muscles began to unwind, still stiff but perhaps not tightened so much as they were. A touch at his lips loosened his clenched jaw. He heard her exhale sharply at the sight. He didn't want to know what it looked like, the raw pain was enough to pain him a mental image.
His own hiss of pain seemed so far removed from his own body. Perhaps it wasn't even his. Was someone else here? He thought to call out, but the words remained lodged in his throat. No. No one was there, only this girl. Her voice was light and sweet, calming against his ragged nerves. He heard her speak just before a sharp pain shot through him. His muscles tightened, he clawed at the dirt with his hands, willing himself to not lash out at her. She was trying to help him. Don't… Don't hurt her. The wind touched his bare torso, sleek with the sweat of the acidic power burning in his veins.
Her hands burned on his chest and he writhed, fighting to get away from her. Bare skin on bare skin. Contact. A moan came from his lips as he tried to hold back his own power. Don't do it. Don't absorb her power. That's what got you into trouble in the first place. He struggled with his abilities, straining to hold onto it and quickly losing the fight. She spoke again to him but in his concentration, the words were lost. He didn't want to do it, didn't want to hurt her when all she had been doing was trying to help. The pain eased in his lungs, thanks to her. But there was no moment of relief or celebration, as a tendril of power slipped from his mental grip. He lunged for it, catching it just before it could absorb even a small piece of her healing ability.
Speak. Tell her it's dangerous, he ordered himself. "I…don't want to…hurt you." He murmured softly, not able to force words of a louder volume past the torture being endured in his throat. He lifted a hand, gripping her wrist, trying to push her hand off his chest. His strength failed him and his arm dropped back to the dirt. "Don't touch me…you don't deserve…" He coughed, fighting to speak. "what will happen."

The young woman tried to make sense of what could have caused the boy’s injuries. The burns were undoubtedly caused by an acidic substance, so Alex came to the conclusion that he had the power to produce and emit acid. Did he have a lapse in control? The healer had a hard time believing that, just because of the sheer magnitude of the damage inflicted on his body. Once she took care of his oropharynx and mouth she’d have to get him talking. Could someone have done this to him?
Even in the dim light that the setting sun offered the forest, Alex could see the small puffs of black smoke leaving the boy’s chest each time he coughed. The girl truly became worried and forced herself to maintain the healing energy with a strong intensity. She could read the pain on the boy’s expression and could see him writhe and convulse every now and then. Was the acid more rampant than she had originally thought? Alex had been at it already for a good fifteen minutes, by now there should be visible signs of recovery, but there appeared to be no change at all.
At the sound of his soft voice, Alex looked up, relieved to get a response from him, though they weren’t quite the words she was hoping for. Alex understood that acid burns are painful, but she wasn’t concerned for herself at all, she could heal herself within minutes. What she didn’t know was that he wasn’t referring to the acid as the threat to her, but what he feared was his actual power. “Really, you don’t have to worry about me. You’re in the care of the best pair of hands around.”
The girl was completely thrown off guard when his hands clasped her wrist, trying to push her hands off his chest. She couldn’t fathom how someone in so much pain could reject the help. The healer wasn’t surprised when he released his grasp on her; the boy just hardly had any strength left in his body. For this Alex was somewhat thankful, at least he couldn’t forcibly refuse her aid. She was resolute in her decision to stay with the boy and help him recover. Her eye brows furrowed at his next words, but Alex was always patient. “Listen, you’re going to have to stop fighting me on this. You’re just wasting your energy because no matter what you say I’m not leaving,” Alex’s voice remained calm, but a new sense of urgency could be heard. “Your injuries are worse than I originally thought. My powers are usually much more effective. I need you to tell me exactly what happened.”
Alex lifted her hands from his chest, the pale blue light no longer surrounding the left hand. She then lifted one of his arms and used the light that enveloped her right hand to examine it. The veins appeared much darker than what was usual, an indication that the acid was poisoning his blood and depriving it of oxygen. She then quickly moved to his hand and held his fingers closer to her face. She pressed down on the nail of his index finger for a few seconds, then released it, watching to see how long it took for the color to return. His capillary refill is very poor.
Gently placing his arm back on the ground, she reached her hand towards his neck and placed her index and middle finger around where the carotid artery would be. It took a few seconds to find it, but the pulse was also weaker than she would have liked. This disheartened Alex to a small degree, but she decided that the best thing she could do now was to keep the healing energy on his heart. It would strengthen his heart and allow for better circulation and would prevent the cardiac muscles from being destroyed by the acid. Again, Alex placed her glowing hands on his chest, but kept them closer together and positioned them directly above his heart. As the energy pulsed and grew, the healer could feel the strength of his heart increase with every minute. She then realized that she didn’t even know the boy’s name, “Mind telling me your name?”

. so i go insane like i always do AND I CALL YOUR NAME, SHES A LOT LIKE YOU
She didn't understand. Frustration renewed the pain with a startling intensity. He had to make her see that it wasn't okay, that he did have to worry about her. He was going to hurt her and she wasn't paying enough attention to realize it. Seth wanted to blame it on her, and maybe in normal circumstances he would have been fine with it, but as it was, he couldn't bring himself to think of this as her fault. It was his fault, and it always would be. He attempted to shake his head emphatically, but it was a feeble gesture at best. With a tightened throat, words were a complication and a pain that he didn't want to endure. Coward, he hissed in his mind. That's all he was, that's all he ever was.
Ignoring her words, he continued to fight her, though it was little more than squirming underneath her hand, trying to get away, to break the contact that was bring him relief. He didn't want it to end, the soft blue glow of power cast him in a soft light, it was reassuring, comforting even. He didn't want to stop her, but for once, he didn't want to be selfish. Someone who rush to his aid without even knowing him, without knowing how he had ended up like this… She just didn't deserve what he would do.
Tell her what happened… He'd been trying! What did she think his whole spiel was about earlier? He probably assumed that Seth had been worried that the acid would burn her. She couldn't have been farther from the truth. He knew enough about healers to know that they could usually heal themselves as well. Seth couldn't hurt her with the acid, but he could if he absorbed her power. Every person reacted differently when he used his power against them. Some were fine, recovering in only minutes, others suffered from extreme headaches that could span a series of weeks, still others would fall into a coma. He didn't know what caused the varying degrees, but he knew it was unpredictable. And what if she was one of the ones that reacted violently against their powers being absorbed? He'd never killed anyone, but he didn't want her to be the first. "It could kill you…
Pressure on his neck shocked him back to reality, back to the pain. Her words blurred and he tried to focus, groaning and blinking, wishing the darkness would fade away and he could see again. The volatile power lessened in its presence. It began to slip away form his grasp. Unlike what he usually did, he didn't try to hold onto it. He gave it an extra shove with his own ability. He could feel the acid drain from his body. He grew still, relishing in the feeling as everything began to become clearer, sharper now that he was far more coherent. Seth relaxed, unwittingly letting go of his own power that he had been holding in a mental grip. "I'm a…" power absorber…
Greedily, it seeped to the point of contact, her healing fingers on his neck. It attacked her savagely, yanking the power that she had already been filling his body with. Absorbing her power was a unique experience, with the healing power working wonders on his ravaged body. His back arched at the sudden influx of the power, his eyes gleamed in the dying light of blue, an ethereal glow spreading across his entire body as her ability began to work its magic on his internal and external damage.
Like scales falling from his eyes, the world returned to him in a foggy vision of blue. Pressure in his mouth replaced the burning sensation of acid, he reached a hand up, touching his face where the burns had been. Gone. Why hadn't he done this when she'd first found him? It was perfect. The fire drained from his body, replaced by the soft comfort that he'd taken from her. He pushed himself from the ground, straightening his body that still glowed from the light of her power. Power. He inhaled deeply, relishing it as it spread through his body, soothing the pain. A grin claimed his lips, wild, almost feral. His brown eyes fixed on her, finally seeing her for the first time.
His ecstasy began to crumble. "I told you what would happen. I warned you. You didn't listen to me." His voice was a deep rumble as he choked the words out, trying to make her understand that this wasn't his fault. "You didn't listen!" His voice raised and his eyes widened. She didn't listen…

Even as the boy warned her that helping him endangered her life, Alex disregarded him, focusing only on healing his body. He’ll thank me for it later. Her bright teal eyes took a moment to scan the darkened forest, knowing that anything lurking in the shadows would be a threat to both of them. Fear of what could be out there urged Alex to work harder and faster. The healer concentrated all of the energy she could muster to her hands. Alex kept her right hand pressed against his chest, above where his heart would be, and slowly moved her left hand up the middle of his chest.
The energy washed over his trachea and esophagus as her hand moved up towards the crook of his neck. When she glanced up at his face, she could see him beginning to truly relax for the first time. A smile formed on her face at this first sign of the boy’s recovery. “Hey, are you fe-.” Before she could even finish asking her question, a flash of pain rushed up her arms and coursed through her entire body. She was frozen for several seconds, with her hands still making contact with him as her power was violently seized from her body.
The moment the connection was broken, that is, once the boy had absorbed all of Alex’s healing power, the girl slumped over to her side and hit the soft floor of the forest. Her face was contorted from the pain and her mouth was ajar as if she wanted to scream, but no sound left her mouth. For anyone else, the pain might have been endurable. But Alex lived her whole life experiencing minimal pain due to her body’s natural ability to dull any discomfort while healing. Thus she wasn’t accustomed to feeling the full force of pain from any injury.
All thoughts of the boy were momentarily drained from Alex’s mind. Although the initial pain from the moment of absorption was gone, the residual pain was enough to bring the healer to tears. As she lay on her side, one hand grasped at the dirt and leaves surrounding her, trying to find something to hold on to. “I told you what would happen. I warned you. You didn't listen to me.” At the sound of his voice, Alex forced her eyes to open and she peered up at him for a second before squeezing her eyes shut again. Opening her eyes made her feel as if someone had taken a bat to the back of her head. "You didn't listen!" A soft groan could be heard as she moved her hand from the earth and grasped her head instead, trying to block out the sound of his voice.
By now, most of the pain had left her extremities and core and was concentrated in her head. It literally felt as if it was split open. She could feel her pulse within her skull following every beat of her heart. Each pulse felt as if someone was slamming her head against the ground. What the heck happened? How did the situation suddenly become reversed? Did she really just see him standing up and speaking when just minutes before he was so damaged that he could hardly breathe, move, and speak? Is this what he had been trying to warn her about? And did she really see him glowing with her energy?
Alex’s breaths came heavily as she tried to push past the pain. She shouldn’t be feeling this. Her powers would have brought her to a full recovery by now. Again, Alex forced her eyes open to look at the boy who still had a faint yet distinguishable light blue glow to him. She knew that he wasn’t to blame for this. He was absolutely right, he warned her several times. But Alex still didn’t regret her decision to stay at his side. If she hadn’t, the boy would have likely lost his life. This, Alex would recover from and it was a small price to pay. Though she wasn’t entirely sure what “this” was. Gathering what little strength she had left, Alex took a deep breath before attempting to speak, “What… happened?”
Her voice was muted and strained and the sound of it just caused her head to throb even more. But she wanted to assure the boy that she bared no ill will towards him. “I know I…” Alex paused to take in another breath, “didn’t listen… not your fault… I’m sorry.” Even in a situation that hardly called for her apology, Alex couldn’t help but feel some guilt for not listening to him. She was always like this, apologizing for every little thing, even incidents that were beyond her control. But at least he was well.

. so i go insane like i always do AND I CALL YOUR NAME, SHES A LOT LIKE YOU
He'd been warned on a variety of occasions, that he should be careful when using his particular gift. It wasn't something easily managed and to be taken lightly. His was serious, with serious consequences should he choose to abuse it. Laughing was the obvious response for someone like Seth. There was no way he was going to take their advice and heed their meaningless warnings. He was his own person and could take care of himself without the help of all the people his parents made him talk to. The outcomes, they often told him, could be disastrous if only the smallest thing went wrong. Each person has a unique chemical makeup and genetics that distinguish them from others and each person would react differently to their power being absorbed. If he held on for to long, or touched them in a more susceptible part of their body, he could kill them. He knew it and he ignored it.
Throughout his life he had scarcely seen the consequences of what he did. He lived on the edge, searching for the thrill and eventually succumbed to the draw of using his powers. If he hurt others, he didn't care, being too busy with how he himself was feeling. They could deal with it themselves, they weren't his problem after all. Always though, they had retained at least the smallest sliver of their ability. They didn't fight him, most chose to run, but they still held on, clinging to a semblance of what he had taken. It always returned to them, but he never took all of it.
Feeling the difference now, he marveled at how he had never attempted this before. Why hadn't he held on to all the others for just a few seconds longer? Would the thrill fade more slowly, would the withdrawals be less intense with a larger dose of the power? He reveled in the possibilities of all he had just discovered. With this renewal of his body, Seth felt as if nothing could go wrong for him. He was powerful, and for once, he even braved to ask himself, perhaps the power would stay with him permanently this time… How different would it be to have a power he could call his own, one that didn't rely on others to fulfill his need? The insatiable, burning desire that filled him if he held out just a little bit too long.
Her gasps, pitiful as the tears fell from her eyes, was what brought him back. He wished he hadn't seen this, hadn't seen what he had done to her. Seth wanted to bask in the glory of her gift and not have to worry about the person he had taken it from. His muscles tightened and he looked away, down to the dirt. Suffering he had caused plaguing him as he tried to distract himself. Walk away Seth, just walk away. In time, she'll be fine, there's no reason to worry about her. He wanted it to be true, but some part of him wasn't willing to buy it. Bright, blue eyes stared up at him, not really seeing him, then they closed. The pain seemed so much more intense in her, than in anyone before… What made her so different that the pain was so great? Perhaps the separation of her body and her gift was too much for her to take. He wondered if she felt the aching loss that he did, everyday, when the desperate need took over his mind.
Acutely, he felt the absence of another's power lingering in the air. He'd really done it, absorbed every last ounce from her body. She was powerless, normal, for the few minutes that he could hold onto it. Or was it really only to be a few minutes? He had taken all of her power after all, maybe the effects would last longer. An hour? It was almost too much to hope for. He looked at her, still on the ground, still in pain. Maybe he didn't want to hope for that. No. Of course he did, this is what he'd always wanted, to find a way to make it last longer. He wouldn't feel this hopeless regret, he refused to feel anything, especially for a perfect stranger. One who was willing to help you… a stranger. The thought flashed through his mind and he looked away from her again, shame causing the blue light to begin to fade.
What had happened…. how to explain it to her, when this whole time he'd been trying. Three words. Power of absorption. It was easy enough, but his tongue felt heavy, like lead in his mouth. He didn't want to tell her. He kept his gaze on the ground, unwilling to look at her, to see her pain. Her words caused him to jerk his eyes to her face. She was sorry? He thought that was what he had wanted to here, but finally hearing the words come from her mouth, all he felt was self-disgust. She was innocent and he was unwilling to take the blame for something that was assuredly his fault.
Seth knelt down beside her, reaching out a hand, before jerking it back. What did he think he was doing? He was just scaring her, like he scared everyone he met. He thought he liked the attention, even in the form of fear, but scaring her… she was already in pain. His touch had done this, so why was he trying to touch her again? To help her… that's all he wanted, to relieve her pain. She couldn't heal herself, so he would do it for her. "I'm s-" He choked on the word. Sorry wouldn't cut it, and he still wasn't sure if he could force himself to say it. "Just let me-" His eyes darted around desperately. Biting his lip, he reached out a hand again, laying it on her softly, restraining his own power and pushing hers to the forefront.
His eyes rolled back as he tried to concentrate, a steady blue glow came from his hand, tarnished by a black that came from his own power mingling with it. He forced it back again, enveloping himself in her power. With the healing power, he reached out, soothing the pain and shock of what had happened. He knew next to nothing about healing, about what to do, but he could bring relief. That much he could do. "My name is Seth, I’m a student at Silas Academy and I’m a power absorber" His words echoed the ones she had told him over twenty minutes ago.

Completely deprived of the gift that provided her with a sense of security for her entire life, Alex felt as if she could be consumed by the emptiness. Ironic. She thought to herself when she recalled how just the day before, she feared that her power was absorbed when Logan was able to use her abilities with just a single touch. But Logan was a power replicator, and so her abilities were not affected by it in anyway. Even though she felt no physical change when Logan copied her powers, she feared the worst and had to check to see if she still had her gift.
But this time there was no doubting that her powers were gone. Alex didn’t even try to summon the energy; she could feel the emptiness and coldness in every part of her body. The sheer magnitude of the hollowness she felt would be unfathomable to anyone who had never lost their powers before. It was as if a part of her being was missing, as if she wasn’t whole anymore. How long would it be until her powers returned? There was no way that Alex could keep going with this half-life she now had.
Alex attempted to prop herself up, but the slightest of movements caused the pain in her head to flare. She remained lying on her side, hoping to ride out the massive ache in her head. Her eyes caught sight of the boy as he knelt down beside her and she watched tentatively as he reached his hand out to her, but then withdrew it. Her heart began to pound fast, fearing that the pain that tormented her entire body several minutes before would return if they made contact again.
She didn’t want to fear him, Alex knew that she brought this on herself by neglecting his warnings. But every time her gaze fell upon him, she was immediately reminded of the sharp pain that had her floored the moment he absorbed her power. It’s not his fault. He didn’t mean to hurt you. At the sound of his voice, Alex closed her eyes, not wanting them to betray the fear she felt. Alex withdrew slightly at the feeling of his hand against her arm. But the moment she felt the familiar warmth of her healing energy coming from his hand, she relaxed and her eyes opened to gaze up at him.
Alex could feel him trying to reach out to her with the energy. So this is what it feels like on the other side. This was an enlightening experience for Alex; healing herself and being healed by another were very different things. When she healed herself, there was always the assurance that any damage would be healed to completion because her body did it automatically. But with Seth healing her, she depended on him to maintain the energy to keep the pain at bay, to bring the relief that she was now incapable of bringing herself.
"My name is Seth, I’m a student at Silas Academy and I’m a power absorber." His words came clearly to her this time and the sound of his voice didn’t cause her head to ring with pain. The power absorbing part Alex had basically deduced herself, but his words confirmed her assumption. The girl breathed deeply, relishing the feeling of having contact with the healing energy again. Without a word, Alex reached up and gently grasped Seth’s hand that was on her arm and guided it up to her head. She let out a soft sigh as immediate relief washed over her and she could finally think clearly.
The girl just laid there for a few moments, allowing the healing properties of the energy to settle in and get to work. Alex slowly pushed her body up to a sitting position, her hand still holding his to her head. She didn’t want to lose the alleviation, or her only connection to her power, the energy that had been hers for so long. “How long does this last? I think the pain will go away soon, but my powers. They’re not permanently gone, right?” There was the smallest hint of desperation audible in her voice as she asked this. The pain, Alex knew, would eventually go away. But nothing could repair the emptiness she felt without her power.
