Class doors swung open as students pushed their way through the narrow exits. It was finally time for lunch and the students seemed to want to waste no time in getting to the cafeteria. Blake finally pushed her way through the classroom door, and after having just got out of English she was desperate for some fun. Sure, having Jeremy Sullivan in her class was definately good entertainment but English was still plenty boring. She was sure her teacher wasn't all that found of her either, considering she spent all class chatting and not paying attention to the board.
Before Blake made her way down to the cafeteria she needed to drop her books off at her locker. She walked over to her locker which was fairly close to her English class. Her fingers fiddled with the silver lock but she suddenly couldn't remember her combination. This wasn't very unusual as Blake was so airheaded that she forgot about a lot of things, whether it be her homework or even what her dorm number was. She thought she had written down the combination but ironically she couldn't remember where she had put it. That figures . . .
She muttered to herself, "Stupid locker . . . I don't know why we can't just have finger print scanners." Frustrated, Blake banged her fist on her locker and let out a yelp as her hand hit the metal door.

Class was out, and Danny was happy. No, Danny was ecstatic. He'd been told before that he got too excited about little things, but he figured it just meant that he could get more satisfaction out of life. Whatever the case, he could nearly have danced as he left the oppressive math classroom. Danny had never had a head for numbers, and though he could muscle a good grade out of his math class, it took a determination he often wasn't interested in showing.
Danny was snapped out of his revelry by the bang of someone fighting her locker. He turned to find the source of the noise, and saw a pretty blonde beside the locker she had apparently just hit. He thought he recognized her from glimpses in the halls and rumors. According to said rumors, she was not the most together of people. Something about being forgetful, maybe a little slow. He didn't know if any of it was true, of course, he had never spoken with the girl before. But, he decided suddenly, there was no time like the present.
Danny stopped beside the girl, smiling as cheerfully as he could. "You alright? You sorta look like you're having a bit of trouble."

Blake gripped her throbbing hand, biting her lip as she tried to ignore the pain. She almost kicked the bottom of the locker but stopped herself, realizing that she didn't need a hurt hand and a stubbed toe. The blonde shook her hand as the pain began to ebb away and turned to the voice of one of her fellow students.
In front of her stood a young man a couple of inches taller than herself, with wings protuding from his back. She believed that she had saw him before, as it was hard to miss someone walking around with wings. Blake didn't know much about him though but she was pretty sure that he was the same age as her, or at least close to it. "Umm, yeah. I kinda forgot my locker combo. They should really just get some sort of facial scanner or whatever." The student seemed nice enough and willing to help, something that Blake always appreciated. "I'm Blake by the way." The blonde then began twirling a strand of her blonde hair, a habit that she had developed through her childhood. She hoped that this boy would be able to help her, as she didn't feel like missing lunch because her locker wouldn't open.

Danny nodded sympathetically along to the girl's words as she explained her locker problem. He always had trouble with his own combination at the beginning of the year. The problem with numbers was not reserved for math, unfortunately. (He'd eventually overcome this by just buying his own lock and replacing the school's with his, so he didn't ever have to learn a new combination.) The insistence on a facial scanner made him laugh outright. Not that he thought it was a bad idea, but it sounded awfully X-Men-y to him. Which, okay, would be kinda fantastic. But only if they got the giant brain computer in the basement. ...Yeah...
"I'm Danny Larkin." He would have stuck a hand out for Blake to shake, but her hand seemed occupied in her hair, so he skipped that and turned instead to the locker. Not knowing the girl's locker, he wasn't sure how he could help. But Danny didn't feel right just walking away after offering help. "Hmm...Well...Okay, I'm not sure what to do. You tried hitting it (which is always my first suggestion)..." He frowned as a thought occurred to him, and he felt he had to ask, just to be sure. "This is your locker, right?"

Blake looked back at her locker and tilted her head as she struggled to think of how she was going to open the locker. "Umm . . . you don't happen to have super strength do you? Cause' that would come in handy right now." She looked back at him, and her eyes met the white wings again. The thought dawned on her that if he could already fly, super strength was probably unlikely. "Oh wait, nevermind." Her fingers wrapped around the lock as she tried pulling down on it with all her might. But much to her dissapointment the lock didn't budge. She truly was starting to despise this locker and was thinking of the facial scanner idea again.
Blake glared at the lock, and began hoping that she would all of a sudden get lazer vision and melt the lock but that 'plan' failed as well. The young student then turned back to Danny at the comment that this locker may not be her own. She frowned, eyes narrowing slightly. "Of course this is my locker! I'm not dumb or anything . . . YOU don't think I'm dumb right?" She jabbed a finger into his chest, one eyebrow raised as if daring him to speak.

Danny smiled at Blake's question, and it grew as she corrected herself. No, he didn't have super strength. Well, not exactly... "I actually might be able to break the locker door with my wing." He hadn't ever tried to break a metal door, and he wondered vaguely if it would hurt. "But then you wouldn't be able to close it again...and I might get detention anyway." And that would never do. Frowning, he watched Blake try futilely to open the locker once more. There had to some trick to opening the lock...he just could not think of what it might be. Maybe offering to help was a bad idea, he thought with a chuckle.
Blake's reaction to his question made Danny put his hands up defensively, surprised at her immediate defensiveness. "I was just asking! I've made mistakes like that before, and I just thought... He trailed off, afraid he might just be digging himself a deeper hole anyway. "I don't think you're dumb. Really."
Desperate to distract Blake, he turned back to look at the locker. "So...uh...did you write down the combo somewhere? Or have some trick to help you remember it? Anything we can work off?"

She thought about Danny's offer to try to break the locker with his wing. It was a risky move for if he did it too hard it could result in his wing getting broken and Blake was already in enough trouble as it is with her not behaving very well in her classes. Plus her locker would be wrecked and that just wouldn't do.
Danny imediately threw his hands up in a defensive manner as she acused him of calling her dumb. He quickly promised that he didn't mean to call her stupid which caused Blake to calm down for the moment. She then went back to focusing on the problem at hand when Danny asked her if she wrote down the combination somewhere. "Well I don't have any trick to remember it but I do think I wrote the combo down somewhere . . . I just have to find it." She fumbled through her back but it was so cluttered and disorganized that Blake just turned the back upside down, letting its contents pore out to the floor. She then bent down and shuffled through all the miscellaneous papers in an effort to find the paper with the combination on it.
Her heart gave a little happy leap as she noticed a tiny slip of paper no bigger than the paper normally found in a fortune cookie. The blonde quickly snatched it up and looked at it to confirm that it did indeed have the combination on it. She jumped to her feet and gave a little sound of happiness. Though Blake almost tripped over the random things scattered amongst the floor she reached her locker. Her fingers flitted around the lock and dialed in combination and she nearly jumped into the air when she heard the click of the lock opening. "Yes!! Finally!!"

Danny stepped back when Blake dumped the contents of her bag on the floor, a pencil stopped in its wild flight for freedom by the toe of his tennis shoe. One eyebrow raised in amusement as the girl began digging through her papers, eventually surfacing with a tiny slip. It appeared to be her locker combo, because she made a happy noise and bounded to the locker. The lock reacted right away to the twisting of her fingers and popped open. Danny chuckled slightly, shaking his head in exasperation at Blake. "You wrote your combo on that? It's a little small don't you think?" He was a little impressed she'd even been able to read the writing on such a small piece of paper.
Well, at least the locker was open, Danny thought, even if he hadn't really done anything to help. Glancing at the open locker, Danny felt he couldn't resist a small jab at Blake. He frowned jokingly at her, the small outburst from moments ago already forgotten as he spoke. "Next time maybe you should put the paper in a special pocket, or inside a book or something. Putting it in with all that other stuff was kind of a dumb idea." He had meant it as a harmless joke, though there was something about it that tugged at his "I've-done-something-stupid" senses.

Blake rolled her eyes at Danny's first comment. "It's a small piece of paper for a small combo. Duh?" She laughed a little to herself, thinking that everyone wrote their locker combinations on small pieces of paper. She picked up the books that she needed to put away and shoved them into her locker. Now she bent down in order to pick up the rest of her stuff and put in back into her bag. With a little happy hum she began placing all of her things into her bag, satisfied to have finally opened up the lock.
The blonde had finally finished picking up all of her things when she heard Danny speak once more. "Next time maybe you should put the paper in a special pocket, or inside a book or something. Putting it in with all that other stuff was kind of a dumb idea." Blake frowned and let out a sharp breath. She stood up, her bag still on the floor. Her normally warm brown eyes now seemed cold like ice itself and her normally happy and cheerful face was hardened. Almost instantly she raised her hands and aimed her ice power at Danny's feet. She managed to create a thick layer of ice surrounding his shoes and ankles.
She stepped closer to him and grabbed his ear and pulled down so that he was down to her height. With a sharp and almost menacing voice she spoke her warning, "Don't you ever call me dumb." The blonde didn't raise her voice but the message was just as clear. Her happy disposition suddenly returned and she picked up her bag but before leaving she turned to Danny once more. "Thanks for the help by the way." She then turned and made her way back down the hall, twirling her hair and humming as though nothing had happened.

Danny laughed at Blake's comment about why she used a small paper, but it faded as he realized that maybe she wasn't joking. He wondered if she thought that's what people did...after a moment he shook his head. She seemed a little...out there, so he wasn't sure that was as far-fetched an idea as it should have been. However, odd people were more fun than "normal," so he decided he liked Blake's oddity.
As soon as he'd made his comment about the idea being dumb, Danny saw saw the change in Blake, and his stomach dropped slightly. Oh yeah, he'd done something stupid again. "Look, Blake, I was just-" He broke off when the girl's eyes met his with a freezing look. Startled, he tried to step back. And found his feet wouldn't move. He glanced down in surprise and saw a thick layer of ice pinning his feet to the ground. He looked back up at Blake to complain - just in time for her to get a hold of his ear and bend him double. Being nearly half a foot taller than she, this was neither comfortable, nor particularly easy.
"Don't call me dumb." Danny spluttered in surprised protest at her words, trying to explain that it had only been a joke. And then the girl had chirped a thanks and walked away. Walked away. Without helping him. He stared after her in shock for a moment, his mouth gaping in shock. Just before she disappeared from his line of sight, he started in surprise. "Wait! Blake! ...Hey!" No reaction. A few of the students passing him snickered, and he shot a sweeping, dirty look in their direction as he flared his wings slightly to help with his balance. He was not going to be reduced to yelling for help. He would not...He kept repeating that to himself as he frowned around the hall, trying to find something in reach that could help him.

The sound of glass beakers and test tubes rattling against each other filled the hallways as Alex pushed a cart filled with an array of lab equipment through the halls. She just finished an experiment she had been meaning to get around to for weeks for her developmental biology course and was now returning the equipment to the stockroom. “Oops! Watch out! Are you okay? I’m so sorry.” Alex apologized to a high school boy who she just clipped with the edge of the cart. It was always difficult trying to maneuver the cart through the halls just after classes were dismissed. The boy gave her the finger before disappearing amongst the crowd of students, causing Alex to stop with mouth agape. What on earth is with teens these days?
As Alex pushed the cart along, a familiar face came into view and Alex greeted the winged boy with a warm smile, “Oh hey Danny!” The cart blocked the sight of his frozen feet and Alex was about to just keep strolling by. Just as she walked right by him, her left foot slid on a puddle of water and Alex fell flat on her back, a loud thud was heard as her head struck the floor. The sound of breaking glass filled the halls as the cart tipped over, spilling all of its contents onto the ground. Alex squeezed her eyes shut, from the sharp pain in the back of her head and to make sure glass shards didn’t go flying into them. Of course her eyes would recover quickly, but it would still be painful to pick out the shards from her eyeballs.
Once the halls were filled with silence, Alex opened her eyes to see several pairs of eyes staring at her and the mess that she seemed to have caused. She sat up, and her bright teal eyes were met with the sight of a pair of feet covered in ice and water surrounded the floor around them. So there was the source of all this mess. A sigh of frustration was heard as Alex pulled herself to her feet, being careful not to slip on the water again. Before she could come to Danny’s aid, she had to clear the mess in the hall so no one else would get hurt. “Be careful people, just walk around it,” she said to the students in the hall who were now trying to carry on with their business.
Alex disappeared for moment and returned with a broom and dust pan and quickly began to sweep up the mess, dumping the broken glass onto the cart. As she did so she glanced up at Danny, “Do I want to know what happened to you?” Despite all that had just happened, Alex couldn’t help but crack a smile at the sight of Danny frozen to the floor. Once the glass was cleaned up, she pushed the cart to the side of the hall so it would be out of the way. She then grabbed a long metal stick from the cart that was used to set up a titration burette and walked over to Danny. “I owe you, remember? My truck?” As she said this she struck the ice surrounding Danny’s feet with the metal. It took several strikes per foot, but eventually there was just a small amount of ice left that Danny would be able to break his feet free. “You might not want to try walking too soon if you can’t feel your feet. Also if you’ve been standing there a while you might want to check for frostbite.”

It was amazing what one could see and hear while standing in the middle of a school hall. Ten minutes after Blake had disappeared, Danny had learned of a feud between two of the students (each student appeared to have something of a posse), four new rumors, a word he wasn't sure of the meaning of, and six girls had passed him having either just gotten with or broken up with one guy or another. Bored of listening in to conversations, Danny had taken to trying to discern the meaning of the work when he heard the soft clink of glass moving toward him. Curious, he searched through the crowd for the source, finding Alex just as she called hello to him. He lifted one hand with a smile, "Hey, Alex. Good to see you again."
Alex didn't appear to be slowing, and it didn't occur to Danny to ask her for help - he didn't think there was really anything she could do for the ice anyway - when she suddenly disappeared from his sight. There was a loud thump and the crash of shattering glass somewhere near his feet, and he glanced down. The slowly-melting ice had formed a puddle beside him, and Alex was currently lying in it with shards of glass all around her. Horrified, Danny tried to bend and help her up, spouting apologies as he went. "I'm so sorry, Alex! I can't beli-Aaah!"
The sudden change of position had thrown off his precarious balance, and he was forced to lurch upright before he could help her, instead windmilling and flaring his wings to keep from ending up on his backside. His right wing clipped one of the high school boys passing Danny, and smacked him into a locker. Danny turned to apologize to him as well, but the boy was disappearing through a wall. Now totally confused and embarassed, Danny turned back to watch in embarrassment and slight apprehension as Alex cleaned up the beaker mess. She didn't seem mad, but...he wasn't exactly in a position to do anything if she decided to get back at him for it. Though, he thought, she doesn't seem the type to. Her question made he chuckle and he shrugged, "I made a joke to the wrong person. I told - and I was joking - told Blake...I forget her last name, that putting her locker combination with all her stuff was a dumb idea. She didn't take it well. He grinned, and then let his expression shift to a guilty one, "I'm really sorry you slipped, Alex. I wasn't paying enough attention to what was going on. Are you okay?"
Alex moved toward him with a metal rod, and he watched her in some apprehension until she reminded him of the incident with the truck and began attacking the ice at his feet. As soon as she had thinned it far enough, he jerked them free and stumbled back. Alex's warning made him snort with mirthless laughter - he could feel his feet. In fact, they hurt. Wincing, Danny moved to lean against the nearest locker and massage his what part of his foot he could reach above his shoes. "Thanks for helping, Alex. I can't believe no one else even offered!" He sighed dramatically and shook his head, "What is our world coming to?" He grinned and shifted to his other foot as he nodded at the abandoned cart, "Where were you headed?"

Alex had to stifle a laugh at Danny’s explanation for what had happened to him. “Well freezing you to the ground was a bit extreme. And reckless I might add,” she said, thinking about huge mess the water had caused. Luckily it wasn’t someone else who fell with a cart full of glass, any cuts Alex sustained were already healed. “It seems like the world is out to get you Danny Larkins. First Maddie and now… Blake was it?” Alex couldn’t match a face to the name so she figured it was a student that she hadn’t met yet. Not sure if I want to meet someone who freezes people in the middle of a crowded hallway.
When Danny began to apologize for her slipping, Alex shook her head, “Oh don’t worry about me, it wasn’t your fault really. The water shouldn’t have been there and I should have been watching where I was going. Plus I’m fine. I got a bit of a headache but it’ll be gone in like 10 minutes or so. Honestly, there couldn’t have been a better person around to fall like that. Had it been anyone else they likely would have suffered a concussion, or worse.” The sharp pain in her head was already reduced to a dull ache.
” Geeze how long were you standing there frozen?” She was surprised to hear that no one bothered to help the guy. She couldn’t agree with him more when he commented about ‘what the world was coming to.’ “Tell me about it! This RUDE little high schooler just flipped me off in the hallway a second ago when I accidently hit him with the cart. I mean really? I apologized and everything. People these days.” As she spoke she walked over to the cart of broken lab materials and wheeled it back to where Danny was, being careful of the water this time. “I was just going to return the lab equipment to the stockroom.” Alex sighed, she hoped no one would be there to make her explain what had happened to the lab equipment. Thankfully nothing on the cart was too expensive to replace.

Danny snorted at Alex's sympathy, nodding emphatically. "Yeah, just a little." To be honest, Danny couldn't even be sure why Blake had done it. He had called her dumb, but surely she had known it was a joke...right? He had said it like a joke... Maybe the people at this school just didn't have any sense of humor. No, that wasn't it, Alex and Logan had seemed to have good senses of humor. Danny sighed, he just didn't get it. He was distracted, though, by her comment about the school being after him, and he laughed. "I know! I don't know what I did to Maddie, either. Do I just repel girls?" He realized his mistake there, and smiled in slight embarrassment, "Err...besides you, I mean."
Desperate not to dig that hole any deeper, Danny flashed her a grateful smile. "Well, I'm glad it wasn't serious. I can get you some painkillers, if you want." He knew she could heal herself, and that she had already said it wasn't bad, but he couldn't help but try. Besides, painkillers might be a good idea for his feet, to be honest. They still stung pretty bad. At least he could feel gratified that Alex was indignant as he was at the total lack of help, and he shrugged, uncertain exactly how long he had been stuck. "Ten minutes? Something like that, I think."
Danny was surprised at the irritation that flared up at Alex's account of the boy she had hit. He frowned and shook his head before nodding at the cart, "That's when you hunt the kid down and run him over repeatedly with that." Danny straightened as he spoke and stomped his feet, wincing at he pins and needles. At least that meant feeling was coming back. He let loose a short sigh, gave a final stomp, and then frowned at the cart. "Hey, I'll walk with you to the lab. I can explain what happened with the cart so you won't get in trouble."

Alex couldn’t help but laugh at Danny saying that he repels girls, then making the correction that he didn’t repel her. “Well 2 out of 3 girls repelled. I’m not so sure that those are very good numbers Danny. You’re gonna have to work on that.” There was a playful tone in her voice as she laughed some more. But she did wonder why the other girls had such distaste for Danny. He seemed so nice and cheerful all of the time and for Alex, he was just really easy to be around.
When Danny offered to get her some painkillers, Alex kindly shook her head to decline, “No thanks. I’ll be as good as new before the painkillers would even have time to kick in.” Actually, Alex had forgotten about the pain within the last several minutes. She was surprised with how quick she had managed to bounce back from this. When Danny mentioned how long he was frozen in place, Alex winced slightly. His feet probably weren’t feeling too great at the moment. That was soon confirmed by the wince on his face when he stomped his feet. Well at least he could feel his feet, that’s always a good sign.
Alex was thankful that Danny offered to come with her to the lab and explain what happened to the equipment. It definitely would make her life much easier. “Much appreciated. The lab tech gets sour when a student breaks just one test tube. I just can’t wait to see the look on his face when I bring him a cart full of broken glass.” Alex laughed nervously at the thought as she got behind the cart and began to push it down the hall. She’d definitely be getting dirty looks from the tech for the next several weeks when she came up to the lab.
