words // 568 // tagged // Vincent/Charlotte/Blake boy with a coin, T H E N M A K I N G A W I S H , A N D T O S S E D I N T H E S E A Daniel sat down, still feeling foolish for destroying Blake's pencil. It was a testament to how out of practice he was that he'd completely killed it. He hoped that some day, he'd be able to work with heat as well, instead of just open flames. It may not even be possible, but heat and fire went together, didn't they? In Daniel's mind, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility, but he wouldn't be holding his breath for it. If fire was what he got, then fire was what he got. He'd learn to control it and hopefully to control himself in the process.
He was told that his and Blake's powers would go well together, and he silently agreed with a nod. Hopefully, Blake might be able to be a human fire extinguisher of sorts. It would take a lot of worry off of his shoulders, but he didn't want to act like a stalker, either. Perhaps he could just ask her to hang around when he practiced. Then again, she seemed bored with the class and a bit petulant if he was being honest with himself. It was likely that she wouldn't want to be his personal safety net. Still, he might ask her on occasion if he was going to attempt something out of the ordinary. And he didn't know what help he could provide her, in return. Sure, he could unmelt things in theory, but the practical application of that idea was a bit harder.
Professor Monroe started speaking again, and indicated that he'd be demonstrating his own powers. Daniel's stomach flew up into his throat and his hands cluched the sides of his chair as he was lifted into the air. It wasn't far, and it wasn't particularly frightening, but the sensation of being weightless was making him a bit nausous. He swallowed hard, still trying to pay attention when Vincent said it was the manipulation of gravity. So, not telekenisis, then. As he was lowered back down to the floor, he wondered how much of a difference there was.
"This is one of the reasons I have been assigned as your teacher, my own talent takes a considerable amount of focus to keep it from being a danger. I've been through this class in this same room just like all of you. Meaning I know that this can be frustrating at times and while I will try to make this enjoyable, it can't always be so." Daniel sighed a little, hoping that Professor Monroe really could teach him to focus. Even if the class grew to be frustrating, boring, or exhausting... he would do what it took to make himself safe for others to be around. He was tired of not using his powers, but he didn't want to hurt people either. The only way to accomplish both was through control.
Vincent then asked if they had any questions, and Daniel hesitated. Charlotte was silent and Blake only asked if he had a fireproof pencil. The questions he was thinking of were more serious in nature, but he didn't want to seem like a teacher's pet, either. Still, he'd never learn if he didn't ask questions. "Well, Sir, I was wondering what your method for teaching control is. Others have used meditation and breathing techniques... things of that nature." He shrugged self-consciously. "Do you do other things as well, Sir?"

Vincent gave a grin at Blake's question, she was clearly just trying to make a joke instead of causing a problem, and that he had no trouble with. "If we had them I would like to think they would be mandatory in a school like this. I could look though." He replied with a quick grin and a wink, showing that he was game. He had his fair share of smart-ass quips and little jokes as a student, and couldn't begrudge it from his own pupils.
Then Daniel asked a more serious question. Vincent's smile didn't fade but he was clearly more serious. "A good question. While I will have you running through mediation and breathing exercises as they are tried and true methods, they will not be the only thing. And unless you need help with them. I would like you to focus on those before you go to bed for the evenings as that is when your body is more relaxed as it is." He said.
"Though while in class I will be having you run through other more active types of lessons. Some may seem silly such as a game of patty-cake. If you don't see the value in it yet, you will be surprised in how such a thing can help your focus. We will also go through several catch and release exercises with different balls. Balancing and several other physical activities. meditation and breath control help mentally, but there is a link between the mind and body, and if you are physically balanced and in control, it will help with learning to focus your gifts." He said.
Plenty of his teaching methods would seem like games, and several would be, but that didn't make them any less effective. Chuckling as he wave his hands, three halves of tennis balls flew over to him and hung in the air. Another wave and a red ball came in and hovered above them. "I'm sure you've all played the shell game before. This is another helpful thing to go through. He said as the ball went into the hollowed out part of the right ball from the class's view. They started crisscrossing and weaving around each other with the freedom of a three dimensional environment rather than on a table. Then he had them stop and smiled. "Each person go ahead and take a guess as to which one it's in." He said. The first lesson had begun, and this would be a taste of the majority of how he would teach.

Heights weren't exactly her thing, and she hoped Vince wouldn't do it to them again. Then again, she didn't doubt that he wouldn't.
When Daniel asked that question, she thought to herself, "good question." Now she was curious as to how they would maintain control. Andthen Vince spoke up about how they would be learning. It sounded like an interesting mix to her. She was looking forward to expiermenting with them, although she still wasn't sure how her power would prove very useful, since she could only track through touch right now. Maybe it would eventually expand, and she would be able to track just by thinking of a name.
And then he pulled out something she was so familiar with. Three cups, and a ball. Charlotte knew about this technique. She used it a lot when she was a child, to learn to track objects. However, since she won't know where the ball is without touching it, she would have to guess. "I'll take a guess at the left." Charlotte then watched intently, hoping she guessed right. She highly doubted it though. Nonetheless, she didn't doubt herself yet.

This is another helpful thing to go through." Honestly, Blake tried to stay away from such confusing games. Already her head was hurting as the balls switched and crossed. Her hand instantly flew to her hair and began curling a strand of it, something she often did when she was either bored or confused. Now it was both.
As he asked each of them which ball they though thought the smaller ball was in, Blake's mind went blank. It was the first class and it hadn't taken long for a small headache to start. Her hand that was twirling her hair left the strand to go to her temple which in her mind was throbbing. "I'll take a guess at the left." She looked over to the redhead who had spoken and was glad that she did. Blake had no plans to actually try guessing at the answer so the girl speaking gave her a break. "Er . . yeah the left." She knew that she had just stolen the girls answer, but technically there was always the possibilty that she too had thought the same thing. And it wasn't like the girl was going to acuse her of guessing at the same answer. |

words // 433 // tagged // Vincent/Charlotte/Blake boy with a coin, T H E N M A K I N G A W I S H , A N D T O S S E D I N T H E S E A Daniel let out a chuckle at Vincent's answer to Blake's question about fireproof pencils. If the Academy had any of those in the bookstore, he'd definitely be in line buying all they had. It wasn't that he lit pencils on fire all the time, but it would definitely come in handy since he was using his powers again. Vincent's answer to Daniel's more serious question, however, caught his attention. He listened intently, curious to know what this class would hold in store for him. He was a bit surprised but glad that they would not only keep going with the traditional stuff, but would incorporate other things to assist focus. That was something Daniel desperately needed with his abilities. All too often, a stray thought or distraction would throw him off guard and he would end up doing something he didn't mean to do. It was all too easy to picture something in his mind and then have it happen, whether that had been his intention or not.
The way Professor Monroe talked, he might want to sign up for a more athletic class as well. He didn't really think of his powers being related to his body, but he supposed that was true. It only made sense, especially since he was immune to fire, after all. Then Vincent raised up three tennis ball halves and told them they'd be playing the shell game. The first thought in Daniel's mind was that the teacher intended on cheating. He'd spent years in a foster home where his brothers and sisters would spend hours cheating random people out of their money, whether by this particular game, cards, or any other means they could think up. But... the teacher wouldn't cheat, would he?
The floating tennis balls came to a stop, and now that Daniel knew it wasn't telekenisis that controlled them, he could appreciate the level of focus the maneuver must have taken. He sat back and tried to think for a moment, not having paid much attention to where the ball was in the first place. Both Charlotte and Blake guessed the left one (which seemed a bit unoriginal on Blake's part), but Daniel wasn't so sure. Sometimes it was required to think outside the box, so to speak. Forehead still scrunched in thought, he kept his eyes on the floating tennis ball halves. "I don't think it's in any of them, sir." He had no idea, really, but it was a classic trick to remove the ball completely while the audience was distracted and it was the best answer he could think of.

Vincent found it very entertaining to watch the class follow the motions he made with his little 'shells'. And he smiled broadly when the guesses were made. "Sadly you got the wrong side ladies." He said as he rotated the tennis ball halve and showed that it was indeed empty. He looked over at Daniel and gave a chuckle. "Excellent thinking, but no. Removing it isn't something I plan to do on you any time soon. Though do keep such possibilities in mind for the future." He said as he let the halve on the right rotate, revealing the red ball which started to hover about in a figure eight formation as the halves drifted to his hand before he set them down.
"Now this does help to sharpen the mind and your own perception, which works for anyone using their gift, this is something I don't have to worry about not helping any of you. Actually in the end all of my exercises will help if you let them." He said as the ball floated down to his desk and rested there. "Another fun little thing we will do from time to time are tongue twisters." He said with a slightly amused look on his face.
"No does anyone care to take a guess as to what aspect of metal focus such an exercises helps to assist?" He asked, wanting to actually have his students speak with him instead of just droning on and on. A surefire way to bore a class, no matter how easy-going a teacher was, would be to do all the talking and not let them try and figure something out, or share what they may have already learned.
