OutfitZilya had never been to a dance before, so this was going to be a completely new experience. She walked slowly towards the door of the great hall, adjusting the mask on her face every couple of steps. Why was she so nervous? Nobody could really tell who she was anyways, right? That's what the masks were for. With a loud sigh, Zilya opened the door and stepped in. The decorations were beautiful, and there were already plenty of people dancing on the dance floor. It wasn't the sort of dance she was used to, though. Zilya had grown up knowing one type; and that was ballet. Her eyes widened under the silver mask, and she quickly made her way over to an empty table on the side of the crowd. As soon as she was sitting, Zilya hoped someone would talk to her. Her hands nervously played at her long, dark hair; most of which was curled in tight ringlets. It was odd for her to have her hair down like this. She always had it up, either in a pony-tail or a bun. A slower song came on, and Zilya sat up straighter. Though she'd never actually been to a dance, she'd seen plenty of movies, and, in them, a boy came up and asked the girls to dance when a slow song came on. Her eyes scanned the crowd, some of which were leaving the dance floor to find something to do until another fast-paced song came on, but saw nobody heading towards her. Maybe things like that only happened in movies. Slightly disappointed, but not sad about not being asked to dance, Zilya got up and headed towards the refreshments table. She picked up a cup and filled it about half-full with the punch from the bowl.

Lendon Raphael Renzi walked into the great hall. He had heard that there was going to be a masquerade ball on, therefore had his mask on too. He was looking forward to the crowd; as the room would be crowded with students, all thinking that their faces were hidden by elaborate masks, Lend would have the perfect opportunity to bump into as many as possible, giving him more options to phase into. He held his head high and marvelled at how calm he looked as he surveyed the decorations; whereas on the inside, he was a screaming ball of excitement.
A slow song drifted amongst the students, and those without dates dispersed. Lend himself stood at the edge of the hall, his back against the wall- at least until he saw her.
There was a girl who had been sitting on the sidelines, watching the couples dance. Lend could see that she wanted to be asked to dance, but no-one approached her; why, Lend didn’t know, because that dress looked fabulous on her. The girl stood and for a second Lend thought that she had been beckoned by someone- then she travelled over to the punch table and helped herself to punch. Lend patted his hair, straightened his tie and walked over so that he stood behind her (taking care to brush against people on his way). He cleared his throat softly.
“I hope that I’m not interrupting, ma’am,” he said smoothly, holding out his hand, “But would you care for a dance?” As he waited for a slap or a yes, an unwelcome thought popped into his head. “You, erm,” he stuttered, ruining his calm aura, “I’m not about to get punched by your date, am I?” As he waited for the formidable tap on the shoulder, some more thoughts flew around his brain: what did she look like without the mask on, he would soon find out; why no-one had asked her to dance before and how lucky he was to find a pretty girl without a date; what was her name, and what was her power... Lend couldn’t wait to find out. He would ask her while they were dancing. |

“I hope that I’m not interrupting, ma’am, but would you care for a dance?” Zilya almost didn’t turn around, for surely the question wasn’t meant for her. However, after waiting a couple of seconds without hearing another girl’s answer, she decided to turn around and face the boy. A slight smile played across her lips as she mentally prepared to answer the question. “You, erm,” Zilya’s head tilted slightly to the side, wondering what made him so suddenly uncomfortable looking. That question was answered with the boy’s next statement; one which almost made her laugh. “I’m not about to get punched by your date, am I?”
“No, you don’t need to prepare for any punches. At least not one from any date of mine. I’m here by myself today.” She said, smiling at him. She glanced momentarily at his outstretched hand and hesitated only slightly before lifting hers and placing it on top of his. A tingle of excitement ran up her spine as they walked out onto the dance floor. She didn’t even know him! (granted, she would by the end of the night, but still.) Once on the dance floor, Zilya lifted both arms and draped them lightly around his neck. “I’m Zilya, by the way.” She said as they began to dance. “Might I ask what your name is?”

Lend thought that the girl wasn’t even going to answer him- then she turned around and smiled! Her smile was pretty. Lend started looking at the things about her again; her eyes, her nose, her lips, her hair- it was all wavy and stuff. Lend wondered if she usually had it like that.
He almost scoffed when she said she was there alone, but he managed to swallow it and shake his head. “How can a girl as pretty as you not have a date?” he mumbled, almost to himself. He glanced around the room; some eyes had zeroed in on them, another couple about to enter the dance floor, but the eyes had quickly grown bored and moved on.
Lend felt her put her hand in his, and he could see her. She was even lovelier under the mask, now that he could see her face (in his mind, anyway). He stored her away in his face bank and had to fight the urge to phase into her there and then. As they started to dance, he slid his arms down and held them to her waist. He hadn’t done this before, so hoped that she would either be as inexperienced as him, or not correct him. “It’s Lend,” he said, his voice low, and couldn’t resist adding, “As in, Lend me your face. I’m an appearance replicator.” He had thrown on the last sentence to clear up the confusion that was probably lurking somewhere inside her. “And what might yours be?” |
