Brief Summary:
Having lived through constant abuse and neglect for most of his childhood, the youngest of Schneider's gang, Lukan, is still very much estranged to the feeling of people taking care of him. He likes to think that he can easily take care of himself no matter the situation. While he can often handle himself, his lack of control over his powers is a major issue and one that he can not deal with on his own. But, Lukan remains stuck in his stubborn ways and often insists he can deal with his control issues without any extra assistance.
Adding on to his false sense of independence, Lukan not only rejects over the top coddling but has completely lost his sense of understanding in the word "family." He believes that being related to someone is no guarantee for love and protection, and that such a relationship can only be built like how you would make a friend. However, Lukan does still long for the love and affection only found in a family. He is currently oblivious to what has caused such a void, still hanging onto the idea that he is perfectly self reliant, but the only solution would be to find the love he secretly desires.
Though he has his scars, Lukan is still able to somewhat function sociably with people his own age, provided they do not delve too much into his history. He's humorous, witty, and a little mischievous at times. Lukan is also very outspoken, now possessing the option to speak his mind with less risk of getting smacked around for it. But, sometimes his outspoken nature doesn't sit well with professors, nor do his stubborn habits. He's not concerned with pleasing authoritative figures anymore though - except for Schneider and Erik - now that he's free from his dictator of a father. Luk would much rather spend times with Schneider's goons; each with the intent to kidnap more super-humans.
Then how does he - a mutant himself - justify such actions? To Lukan, all super-humans are inferior to even the most incompetent human; Schneider imprinted that into his brain since he was nine years old. Thus, kidnapping is reasonable. Selling them is perfectly fine. Luk considers himself lucky and privileged to be apart of the whole scheme; he's thrilled to have a purpose.
Power Description »Luk's power is simple, though hard to control at his age. Whether it's voluntary or not, he can manipulate shadows such as enlarging them, moving them, or morphing them in any way shape or form. These shadows are not solid, meaning they can't be physically felt by a normal human being. He can however make them 3D such as manipulating them into large masses of shadowy black clouds. His power is often affected by his emotions. For example, when he's upset sometimes he may accidentally use other people's shadows to portray how he's feeling in a such a way that it's almost like an extreme shadow puppet show. Most of the time Luk's use of his power is spontaneous due to his lack of control.
History »
Lukan was born to a lower middle class family in the small town of Converse, parented by Arlen and Jamie Moore. Parented wasn't exactly the best word to describe what the pair did, for the most part they lived their lives ignoring Lukan until his needs were at the utmost urgency. Only once his unusual powers came into play at seven did they spare their son a second glance. Though they showed little to no fascination in Luk's ability to manipulate shadows, instead they felt outward annoyance to their son's lack of control. The house would grow dark unexpectedly, clouds of dark shadows would float throughout the Moore residence, or the parents would find themselves treated to a shadow puppet show via their own shadows. Often times Jamie would suggest they "sell the boy off for science" and reap the cash benefits, but Arlen soon convinced Jamie that having a son would serve them well in their old age, refusing to consider how Lukan would act towards them when at the moment they treated him like dirt. Jamie reluctantly agreed to letting Lukan stay, though she herself would be leaving soon.
With the weight of a unusual child and a stressful job at a nearby warehouse constantly pressing down on his shoulders, Arlen resorted to drinking and gambling to whisk away his troubles. In reality, the one thing it did take away was his family's money. Their dwindling budget became tighter and tighter until Jamie decided one day to leave him and Lukan, claiming to have never had very strong feelings for him anyway. Now in the middle of a divorce, Arlen increased his drinking and therefore, his horrible treatment of his seven year old son grew worse.
Lukan was able to grit his teeth through most of the drunk beatings, sometimes even stop his father before things got too violent. But more often than not, he was left bruised and battered while his father tried to sleep off a hangover. Not even Luk's onslaught of shadows provided good defense. His father didn't limit the beatings to fists either. Beer bottles, shoes, belts, kitchen plates, furniture, and various other household items often drew blood during one of Arlen's episodes. Eventually Arlen grew tired of the recurring calls he received from Lukan's school about the cause of his injures, and forced Lukan to drop out in order to hold off a visit from the cops; he called it home schooling. Lukan didn't mind though, less accusing phone calls meant less beatings, but not by much. Most importantly, he wouldn't have to worry about having any control issues while at school. His classrooms tended to suffer from "chronic blackouts" as the teachers liked to call them.
Despite the constant beatings and neglect, Luk never allowed his spirit to completely break. Every chance he got he'd run away, no matter the punishment inflicted afterwards. Every scar was just a step closer to success, and he was learning. His time spent free increased with each escape attempt. However, every time he was brought back the punishment was harsher. Luk was stuck in a battle of who would win first, himself or the beatings. The standstill was finally broken when someone intervened. The nine year old had just managed to stay out of his father's grasp for a full two days when a policeman brought him back home. His father put on his friendly facade, thanking the officer for retrieving his "troublesome" son, and then shutting the door. His dad followed the routine by waiting about five minutes for the policeman to drive off, never releasing Luk from his grip, before bothering to strike. And he struck hard.
By the time Erik and Schneider crashed through the front door - acting like nothing less than a two person swat team - Luk was lying on the ground, crying and screaming through bruises and blood. The younger of the two men lunged forward, dealing blow after blow to Arlen's head and stomach. A panicked Lukan crawled under the coffee table and didn't come out until they dragged him; by that time, his father was lying unconscious on the floor. Even in his nine year old mind, Luk secretly wished him dead.
The unlikely saviors whisked Lukan away to their base camp in Vermont; the nine year old grumbled the entire journey, launching into a fit every time one of them tried to touch him. Whether they saved him or not, the boy's scars ran into his brain, not just his skin. He feared strangers. Didn't trust anyone as far as he could throw them. And he was only nine years old. It took Schneider and the rest of his gang a little more than a month before they could even touch Luk without him screaming. Then why keep him at all, if so unruly a child? Erik - once an abused child like Lukan - felt a kinship to the young boy, and it was he that convinced Schneider to accept the boy into their gang. It would be years later before Luk would discover Schneider's and Erik's original plot to kidnap and sell him, as they did to many other superhumans. But by that point, it didn't matter to Lukan. He had a family, freedom, and a sense of adventure many a young boy would dream of. He had purpose.
