Brief Summary:
Military life has an intense air around it, always pounding down on the individuals it engulfs. One either combated with the heavy rules and procedures, or listened to demands and became obedient. Rufus, having lived on army bases for nearly fourteen years of his life, loved what the military stood for. One could trust the army and look up to them with open admiration. Rufus wanted to be just like them, but only one aspect of the army bored into his mind and made him tick; the strict discipline. When he went to school on the bases, Ruf's teachers made themselves very clear about not putting up with rule breakers. "But why?" He'd often ask. The teen witnessed a few class clowns and the seemingly illegal joy they brought to other children, and he continues to look upon them with the same idolization given to a general. Those other kids were fighting back against dullness and conformity. They made sacrifices for others' happiness. With a younger brother to impress and keep cheerful, Rufus soon mimicked their behavior and became his own breed of trouble maker; a soldier fighting to keep the world colorful. In Rufus' eyes, society needs spontaneity, fun, and idols without sticks up their asses. He respects that security is needed, just like the army itself, but he firmly holds his ground against the life getting sucked out of people just so their bodies can keep walking.
Some of the rules Rufus breaks are policies based around status quo, or what people expect of him. Yes, they most likely expect a risky individual with a knack for breaking rules just by looking at his appearance, but that he's... nice? Most would scoff at the thought, but Ruf has compassion and sympathy like no other. His trouble making is to keep people happy, and Ruf isn't one to look away from a down expression if he knows how to help. In fact, every time he breaks a rule, he makes sure that that the number of those having fun greatly outweigh the amount of people who become upset. On another note, he's very much a cuddler despite others' assumptions. Rufus also has an artistic streak in him, and when boredom struck him as a child sometimes his bedroom walls would suffer under crayons and paints. He still hasn't broken the habit of drawing on furniture when the temptation strikes him. Sometimes his friends even leave his company with smiley faces drawn on their shoulders in sharpie.
Ruf does have flaws that some others take offense to however. He can't lie very well, and this weakness has made him blunt in stating the truth to the point of shock. For example, if Rufus was complaining of a headache and his mother asked him how he got sick, he would proudly state he drank himself to sleep last night. He does not monitor how others may react to the truth, and thus often receives a few wide eyed stares during conversations. Rufus also has a tendency to annoy authority figures with his rule breaking. Though he'd happily go over and thank them for helping the world relearn freewill, most wouldn't feel so proud about playing a part in Ruf's achievements.
Power Description »The acidic chemicals had a very strong affect on both Rufus and his tattoos. His tattoos are permanently embedded in him and have become a part of his skin instead of just ink. In fact, if you experimented on him you would find that the tattoos go all the way down to the bone. But this seventeen year old is not just a walking piece of artwork, for he can control his tattoos to blend his whole body into wherever he may be situated; like a chameleon. The tattoos spread across his whole body, face included, until the only part of his body that may set him off from his background are his eyes and his clothing. Unlike the funky lizard, Rufus' power acts quickly and he may have his whole body covered in a split second. Rufus can only make himself blend in to his current surroundings, and he has no control over ink considering his tattoos are now skin.
History »
Rufus' parents, William and Samantha Bailey, met at army base Fort Campbell in Kentucky while both were in the process of completing their army training. Samantha was working towards becoming a combat nurse, while Will was absorbed into the idea of piloting a helicopter. Will soared through most of his training, passed every test with flying colors, and became one of the top in his class. However, he possessed a sort of clumsiness that had a strange manner of popping up, as though working towards a delightful destiny for the man. Perhaps that's why he slipped in the shower and sprained his wrist on the fourth week of training. During that day, the embarrassed man hurried off to the infirmary for treatment while shrugging away his comrades' laughter. He was assigned to Samantha, and his injuries would be a part of her own training. As she treated the light sprain, Will tried to convince her he'd gotten the wound trying to stop two privates from fighting. Samantha rubbed the soap scum between her fingers and eyed him with mock suspicion, but then she laughed. Will soon joined in with his own sheepish laughter.
Her laugh delighted him to such an extent that he continued to visit her for the remainder of his training. Every time an older nurse would shoo him away with disapproval. However, eventually they grew accustomed to the young man showing up, and would occasionally turn a blind eye to his presence. They also figured this was the best way to stop him from hurting himself just to see Samantha. William still thinks the nurses let him in because they could already see the love the two trainees had for each other. Whether they could see it or not, Will and Samantha were in love, and three years later they married in a military ceremony. A short five months later, Samantha grew pregnant. The couple never exactly planned for children, but when their first born came along they were pleasantly surprised if not a little bewildered. At the first signs of pregnancy, Samantha dropped out of the nursing service, but William continued with his ambitions in order to receive an income. The couple lived on base, and thus, Rufus Lee Bailey was introduced to the military lifestyle when his eyes first opened. With crinkled nose and wide blue eyes, Rufus emitted little expressions of fascination. That fascination never completely died.
They became a traditional military family, hopping from base to base as the years progressed. Rufus underwent education on the military base, though he'd often find himself distracted by the training cadets and occasional passing airplane. To be involved in the military was to instantly become one of Rufus' idols, though in his eyes his father was still the best. He was the best pilot, the best fighter, the most skilled man in the entire world. Needless to say, Rufus' innocence was still intact. The young boy was then given even more joy at the birth of his brother's birth. Rufus was nine when Adam came into the world, and he adored his brother with protective passion. Rufus could be an idol now, and he vowed to be a damn good one. He taught his brother all he knew, and told him everything with no filter. His mother took pleasure in her sons' relationship, but around the time when Rufus enrolled in middle school her smile changed to a disapproving frown.
Rufus' innocence faltered in middle school, as it does with most children. Adults were not perfect, the world was not a fantasy, and things could always go wrong. He accepted it and managed to keep his love for both his family and their military lifestyle, no matter the imperfections he now noticed. One thing didn't change in the family however, and that was Rufus' relationship with his brother and the secrets he shared with the three year old. And still Rufus had no filter for his mouth. Adam was learning things even thirteen year olds would gawk at. Samantha quickly took notice of this when Adam started calling Rufus, "Roofie." She scolded her older son, grounded him, took away games and denied him interaction with his friends, but Rufus had already begun to link his punishments with sacrifice. He was becoming a marvelous idol for his brother, or at least that's what he thought, and it seemed that worrying his mother was all a part of the goal he'd set for himself. Rufus' father was already deployed to Iraq, and thus, missed his chance to discipline his misguided son. Samantha's only consultation were brief Skype conversations with her husband which usually turned into full on rants before Will could get a single word in.
Rufus began to realize his misbehavior made his younger brother happy and excited. To let Adam get involved in said behavior further elated the younger boy. While his father was out sacrificing his life for the country, Rufus was risking punishment to make his brother, and others happy. He rather liked the fun yet risky activities he participated in too. These mom maddening acts most commonly included telling his brother rather risque stories and facts, cutting up his hair in strange fashions, ruining clothing, smoking, drinking, and most importantly, getting tattoos and piercings. His mom nearly killed him when he got his first tattoo. No matter how horrible the punishments were, the little high five from his brother made it all worth it. The kids at school encouraged his rebellious ways too. They invited him to parties, heads filled with rumors of his fun loving personality and quirkiness. He quickly became the burst of color amongst all the other army children who were usually disciplined to the point of almost robot like behavior. Rufus became a release.
He maintained his joyfully rebellious ways for most of his young life, and not even the strict, disciplinarian like ways of the on base schools could make him falter. Only once did his mischievous personality cause him great harm, but he gained a blessing as well. Rufus was fifteen when his class left for a field trip to a military laboratory; he was in chemistry at the time. The day was routine almost, and when things fell into routine Rufus would find himself engulfed with boredom. He had a quick fix for boredom; getting into trouble. While one of the scientists droned out a lecture for the class, Rufus sneaked out and started to wander among the other laboratories. At first he only looked through the windows, ducking whenever a scientist glanced his way, but eventually he built up the nerve to explore further. Rufus entered a room with a strong stench of chemicals, which was also empty of any scientists or doctors. The room was empty for a reason.
Upon a quick glance around the room, Ruf took notice of the shower like nozzles on the walls. Suddenly there was a light fizzing noise that grew deafening in a matter of seconds, muffling the scream of a scientist running towards the laboratory door. A spray burst from the nozzles, and Rufus soon felt like his whole body was getting sandblasted raw. He collapsed to the floor and writhed in pain until the nozzles were turned off only seconds later. The teen was helped to his feet then taken to the infirmary; though he had no noticeable wounds, shockingly. What the scientists were testing was top secret technology, though they were starting small. They were testing a new cleaning solution, one that would blast away any dangerous bacteria while dying the dirt to match the surface it covered. The experiment was planned to eventually be used for cleaning the military's vehicles. In hopes of getting its camouflage effects, the scientists melded the solution with the DNA of a chameleon as well as that of an octopus; the animal masters of camouflage. Rufus was an unplanned experiment, and when his skin suddenly became the same powdery blue of the hospital sheets, the scientists' realized their creation worked better than they could have imagined.
Ruf's parents permitted he be tested on, if only a year or so. Out of curiosity for his new abilities, the fifteen year old obliged. The tests they ran were generally painless, and they soon came back with sheets and sheets about his chameleon like powers. The family scrolled over the papers, read about the new phenomena that was Rufus. Though they were wary of their son at first, eventually they came to realize his powers were of little harm and things took on a sense of normality. At least they did for a month or so, but soon the scientists were back with an extensive list on Rufus' powers. Could he cause other things to blend in? Was it the skin itself that changed, or something beneath it? How long could he stay in a chameleon state? They wanted answers through another round of testing, but said tests were more dangerous. Rufus' parents refused, but the scientists kept up their persistent behavior. Eventually they settled on an agreement. In order to make sure he never forgot how to use his power, Rufus was to be enrolled in Silas Academy. Once the teen finished his education, then he could make his own decision on whether or not to get experimented on.
At first, Rufus was annoyed at having virtually no say in joining Silas, but upon arriving at the school he settled down quickly. Silas wasn't like the military school, as the discipline was much more lax and the students had just a little more color. Plus there were the power wielding students, but there was more to see in the variety of personalities than any special ability on the campus. At least, that's what Ruf thought and still thinks. He's remained on the campus for hardly a year, and his trouble making ways haven't changed. Though just like in the military school, he believes he's rebelling for the sake of reintroducing freewill into society.
