A wave of warmth washed over Alex as the early afternoon sun beat down on her, causing goose bumps to dot her arms and legs and bringing a smile upon her lips. Alex had long awaited the day that the weather would be warm enough for a dip in the lake, and finally the day had finally come. It took the girl nearly a quarter of an hour for her to find the perfect spot to sprawl out, but she finally settled on a grassy slope several yards away from the shore of Lake Claire. Lazily, she kicked off her flip flops and let her beach bag fall to the ground before rummaging through it for her towel to spread out upon the grass.
The moment she sat down, Alex immediately went for the bottle of sunscreen in her bag and started with her face and neck. Sun protection was close to the top of Alex’s priority list any time she went out in the sun, especially in the summer when it didn’t take very long for her face and shoulders to turn beet red from the exposure. Of course, her body could easily heal itself of the sunburn within a few hours, but the pain was never less annoying. Once her face and neck were sufficiently covered, she shrugged out of the cover up dress she wore over her swim suit and made sure to get her shoulders, torso, and legs. SPF 80, I will certainly not be getting burned this time.
Now safe from the sun, Alex laid back and let her body soak up the warmth while listening to the sounds of the other students splashing in the water. She had sort of hoped that there wouldn’t be so many people at the lake today, but on a day like this that certainly wasn’t going to be the case. The healer decided that once she was sufficiently warm she’d go and take a dip, but for now she’d just relax and forget about school and her other responsibilities. This was a much needed break after weeks at her desk, buried in her books and lab reports.
Within moments, Alex had dozed off into a light sleep under the sun, forgetting about her plans to swim. She dreamt of enormous talking birds and other nonsense and before she knew it, she woke to the sun in a different part of the sky. How long had she been out? The healer stretched and reached for the bottle of water in her bag, suddenly realizing that she was parched and warm to the touch from the sun. After downing half the bottle, Alex finally got up and started heading towards the water, but stopped when she noticed a familiar face heading towards the lake. Her face immediately lit up at the sight of an old friend and Alex switched her course and made for the winged figure. Danny!

The day had very nearly turned into a hot one. That, on top of following several months of cold, made the day a great one for either sleeping under a tree somewhere, or swimming. Since Danny had been doing a lot of the former on days that were kinda suited for it, he decided to take a shot at swimming. He really liked swimming, and his right shoulder had finally eased to where he could fly for short bursts, so he figured it was probably safe to swim. ...Because there was totally a connection between the two activities...sure...
It took him longer than he expected to find where his swimming trunks had run off to, and even longer to find a towel he could use. After that, he spent a few minutes trying to find Lukan to see if he wanted to come, but was eventually forced to give that up as a bad bet. Maybe he'd run into him on the way...he kind of hoped so, because he thought Luk had been in a bad mood lately, and maybe swimming would put him in a better mood. ...He'd have to figure something out, anyway...all Luk's moody teenager stuff was bringing him down. Plus, he hated seeing someone bummed all the time like that.
Danny was halfway across the law when he realized he had forgotten his towel in his room. And his t-shirt. He had somehow managed to wander all this way in nothing but his swim trunks without realizing it. Excellent. Heaving a sigh, he slowed to a sudden stop and glanced back at the dorm building, trying to decide if a hike back was worth it. Ultimately, he decided it wasn't. He could just lie out on the grass and dry himself if it got to that, and he was going to be swimming, so he didn't really need the shirt anyway. If only he'd realized that twenty minutes ago, instead of wasting all that time... Oh well. He puffed an irritated sigh and continued his walk, the breath turning to an absent-minded whistling.
He was not, it seemed, the only one who thought a swim would be nice. More than one towel was spread out in the grass and the sandy stretch just before the water, and boys and girls alike splashed around in the lake proper. The sight of it made Danny's pace pick up, and he was jogging straight for a blank stretch of water when he heard someone call his name. He glanced over without breaking stride and saw Alex moving toward him. Alex...in a bikini. He stumbled and just barely managed to catch himself, his face flushing scarlet. Maybe she'd think it was just because he'd tripped. "I-uh-ahm...Alex! Hey." His voice hadn't broken, but it had been a near thing. Where was an out of control bus when you needed one? "What are you do-" Swimming, stupid! What else? He caught himself and hoped that heat in his face wasn't another blush, "Ah...I mean, what's up?"

Not wanting to come off as rude, Alex tried her best to hide her laughter when Danny stumbled, but a very amused expression remained on her face by the time she reached him. Wow, that looks like a terrible sunburn, she thought to herself, not realizing that it was just him blushing from his mishap. The “mother” in her wanted to ask if he was alright, but she thought better of it and figured he’d appreciate it if she just pretended that it didn’t happen. “Hey! It’s been a while hasn’t it? How have you been?” One thing Danny never failed to do was to make Alex laugh, and today wasn’t an exception to that. She smiled as he stumbled over his words as well, before responding. “Not much, just soaking up some sun and getting ready to go for a swim. Want to join?”
Although it was a bit of a struggle, Alex tried her best to keep her eyes on his face, especially since she knew that she had a thing for shirtless guys. This could very well be a long afternoon for Alex. The healer recalled the incident with that guy Logan from ages ago and quickly worked to repress that memory by starting up some idle chatter with Danny. “So, is it harder to swim? For you I mean," she said as she gestured towards his wings. Alex couldn’t imagine what it must be like to have such hulking appendages protruding from her back, yet at the same time, she envied him the graceful wings. Before she knew it, Alex was staring at his wings, and her eyes wandered to his chest before she caught herself and quickly looked away. Dang it Alex! Why can’t you keep your eyes where they belong. For a second time, a change of subject was in order and the “sunburn” on his face seemed like a safe enough topic.
“Danny your face! Do you not use sunblock? I have a ton with me, let me go get some for you!” Alex had already taken off towards her little spot before she even finished her sentence, allowing herself plenty of time to collect herself. A few short moments later, Alex returned with a bottle of the thick SPF 80 and was already squeezing copious amounts into her hand. “ No one is getting sunburns on my watch!” She said with a playful smirk before slathering the thick substance onto his cheeks and shoulders before he could protest or refuse. Once again, Alex managed to make the situation awkward. Why couldn’t she just make him put in on himself? But then it would just be even more embarrassing if she stopped now and made him finish. She tried her best to make it quick, but not at the expense of getting him effective coverage against the damaging effects of the sun! The way she twisted and turned him while applying the sunscreen made her look like a mother fretting over her child, except this child happened to be very tall with great wings extending from his back.
A few moments later, Alex set the bottle of sunblock on the ground and rubbed whatever was left on her hands onto her own arms. “Much better right? Now you won’t have to deal with pain each time something touches you. You’ll thank me for it later.” By now, Alex’s own cheeks were painted pink from blushing. Maybe it was time that they just get into the water and end the awkwardness? “Last one there is a rotten egg!” With that, Alex took off sprinting towards the water, not even waiting for a proper and fair start. Her legs carried her as fast as she could, because there was no way that Alex would let herself be the rotten egg!

Danny was so relieved when Alex's only reaction to his embarrassment was friendly chatter, that he could have kissed her. No, wait! That was the last image he needed right then. Trying desperately to distract himself, he just managed to catch her invitation to join her swimming. Yes, he did want to go swimming...he just wasn't entirely sure he'd be able to do it without drowning himself on accident. Having Alex around was problematic enough, but this...this might just be too much. Fortunately, Alex seemed just as distracted, and she was asking another question.
"Yeah, it's a little trickier." He opened the wings a little, suddenly very self-conscious under her scrutinizing. Maybe he could just pretend it was nothing...He grinned and crinkled his nose jokingly, "But since I'm so amazing, I've managed to master it." It was true, too. He could swim without endangering himself or those around him...mostly. Knowing his luck, however, he was probably going to do something really stupid and end up disproving himself. The heat that had finally started to fade from his cheeks came back, and he peered once more at Alex, who was...what was she staring at? It was his chest, he realized a second later, and glanced down, worried at what she might have seen. "What happened? Is there something on me?" When he looked back up, she was distracted again.
"Er, it's not-I didn't-okay..." Danny watched helplessly as Alex darted off to one of the towels spread out on the ground to get sunscreen. At least it gave him a minute to wrestle the blush out of his face so he could smile normally when the little brunette rushed back, brandishing her tube of white cream. "You would be the sunburn patrol, wouldn't you?" There was no vindictiveness in his voice, though, and he let her flop him around while she applied the sunscreen. He was perfectly capable of doing it himself - though the spot between his wings was always harder than he thought was fair - but if it were left to him, he probably would have forgotten it anyway, so he thought he should just let her do it herself if it was going to make her happy. Besides, it sorta felt good, and, as particular as she was, she wasn't going to miss a spot. As soon as she'd finished, he couldn't help chuckling, "I'll take you word for it. But it looks like you need some too, you're cheeks are getting pink." The words were barely out of his mouth before Alex had shouted her rotten egg comment, and then sprinted toward the lake.
"Hey, that's cheating!" Danny took several running steps after the healer before an idea struck him. He could cheat too... Smiling despite himself, he used his momentum to launch into the air and toward the lake. He curled once he was close enough, and plummeted toward the surface. Either he'd beat Alex, or he'd really soak her, which would be just as good.
