Brief Summary:Max used to be a very happy guy. Life was good, with all its little hardships being taken in stride. He had a wife he loved and a beautiful little daughter. He was always smiling, very warm and friendly. He would readily talk to anyone and made it a point to attend most of the social functions he was invited to. He was, and still is, a gentleman. His heart’s been shattered though, and most of the time he is nothing more than a shell of his former self.
Ever since Samantha left him for another man, Maxwell has been rather depressed. He seldom smiles, and when he does it never reaches his eyes. He doesn’t go out of his way to make new friends, and tries to avoid social gatherings if he can. To a perfect stranger he seems rather cold and uncaring. Truth is, he still isn’t over his divorce and the fact that he’s thousands of miles away from his daughter is killing him inside.
In the classroom Max is all business. He doesn’t take any crap, so the students that actually decide to show up better be ready to learn. If you are disrespectful or fall asleep, he will tell you leave. It’s not a request. Maxwell doesn’t see the point in teaching those who do not want to learn, and therefore doesn’t tolerate sloth like behavior. He does try to keep his lectures fun and interesting though, and is not opposed to group discussion. He also supports group projects, so be prepared to work with your peers.
Give him time and Max will warm up a bit. He’s not looking for romance, and will probably brush off most advances. He does want a good friend though, someone he can talk his problems through with. One of the most notable things about Max is that he is a very loyal guy, and once you’re able to earn his friendship chances are you’ll have it forever.
History »Maxwell's start is a little different from most of the people who attend and work at Silas Academy. For one, he should actually be eighty-nine. Born to Edward James Goddard and his wife, Victoria Rose Kelley-Goddard, his life actually got its start in February of 1922. He happily spent the first sixteen years of his life there, along with his younger sister Jane Anne Goddard.
It was around his sixteenth birthday that he had his first experience with his powers. He was driving Jane home from a friend's birthday party when a drunk driver swerved around a sharp turn. They would have been run right off the road had Max's power kicked in. The next thing they knew they were on the same road at the same time of night, only it was 10 years earlier when automobiles were not so common place. It took a lot of work and almost causing his own accident to get them back into the proper time.
After that, a lot of his free time was spent trying to figure out and master his new found power. The beauty of it was that he could almost make it seem as if he'd never left. He could disappear for a few days into the past or future and so long as he kept track of when he left he could always return home without a hitch. At least until he'd thought it was a good idea to get a higher education in the future.
Maxwell had wanted to be a teacher since he was twelve. There was a brief period in which he wanted to be veterinarian, but his allergies quickly doused that dream. He was exposed to the profession early on in his life, his mother being an elementary teacher. His school years were spent in prep schools before the days of his powers, and with the help of his time travel he obtained a Doctoral degree in Medieval History from Cambridge several years in the future, when degrees were more diverse. A number of reasons ended up tying him permanently to the future, and eventually he stopped returning home altogether.
Before applying to Silas Academy, Max taught at both the high school and college levels. The first two years of his career were spent at New College, from which he’d graduated. There he mainly taught Medieval History, though he also had a few sections of European History and Ancient History. At New College he also met his wife, Samantha Lewis (a human). His marriage brought about a career change and he became a history professor at the University of Bath. He remained there for five years, his powers kept under wraps while he enjoyed a normal life. He and Samantha even had a beautiful baby girl together.
But things don't always work out the way one hopes, and Maxwell's marriage was not perfect. Samantha did not take kindly learning about his abilities. Not that it had really mattered, because she'd been cheating on him before she'd ever found out. Max was left heartbroken, learning for the first time the sort of devastation powers could bring.
Recently divorced, Max has decided to change things up a bit. He'd already left his own time; why not leave his own country? He’s packed his bags and moved to America for the time being. Leaving his daughter was probably the hardest part of his sudden life change, but she gets to be flown in on major holidays. Since she as of yet has not demonstrated any special abilities of her own, Samantha got primary custody. As for income, he’s applied for the job of History professor at Vermont’s Silas Academy, a place very accepting of people like him.
