Reality had tunneled down for Walker until all he could focus on was his son still standing too close to the dark-haired thundercloud. He could hear the others talking – teasing Seth, he thought – but it filtered through as muffled, unhelpful nonsense. Toby still clung to the boy’s leg, his head swiveling curiously from person to person as the seriousness of the situation started the beginnings of a revelation. “As accidents go, yeah, it was kinda funny.” He kept his hands spread slightly, trying to seem as nonthreatening as possible, and trying his best not to let his panic make his hands shake. Jackie’s voice broke in, and he scowled back at her. He was tired of trying to be nice to these people, and he was tired of being on edge all the time, and he was rapidly getting tired of today. “How the hell was I supposed to know you’re a medium? I’m still getting used to my power, so I’m sorry if my world hasn’t quite shifted to focus on you yet.”
The blonde erupted at Jackie, but Walker’s “dad-senses” had started tingling, and he snapped his head around to watch as Seth bent down closer to Toby. He could hear the girl cussing and swearing, and while enough of his brain was functioning to be mad that she couldn’t watch her mouth around his son, he decided now wasn’t the time. He jerked a reflexive step closer to Seth, but froze when he received a warning look. Relief mixed in with the gut-clenching nervousness when Seth only tried to send Toby back to Walker – the three year old wasn’t having it. “But I wanna play . . .”

Walker snatched Toby up, finally feeling calm at having his son’s arms latched around his neck. This was getting ridiculous and dangerous, and he wondered if he should just take Toby and go while he still had a chance. He started backing slowly away, but froze after only a couple steps when he heard Rini. “What? What just happened?” The kid was just a light-manipulator who didn’t like to get wet . . . wasn’t he? What could be scary about that?[/size][/div] ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂ ❂
