The forest was naked and cold, the trees stripped of any protection against the freezing winter. Danny stood on one of the very highest branches of the tallest tree he could find on the edge of the forest, staring out across Silas's campus. From his vantage he could see just about everything - students huddled into the collars of their coats as they hurried from building to building, some of them drifting across the yard, even one jogging around the horse's training yard. A sudden breath of wind sent the top of the tree to dancing and swaying, and Danny's hand clutched in a death grip on the skinny trunk. He knew he wasn't going to fall - or, rather, that if he did, it wouldn't be the end of the world - but his stomach still lurched and burned every time.
This had probably been a bad idea.
Taking a slow, deep breath, Danny forced himself to lean out and peer toward the ground. His stomach crawled toward his throat, and he could feel the bark digging into his palm, but he remained where he was, trying to judge how far a drop it would be. Too far - can't do it. Steadying himself yet again, he gave himself only a second before unhooking his arm and flinging himself from the branch.
A yell caught in his throat as wind blasted past him, and he had to force his wings to stay tucked against his back. Wait...wait... The ground was coming up awful fast... Wait... At the last moment he thought possible, he threw his wings out and let them catch the air. The jerk of wings on shoulder made him yell slightly, and he looped quickly around to make another pass at the ground. He hit hard enough that he had to jog to a wincing stop not far from his starting tree. Grumbling under his breath, he stretched his wings slowly out and back, resisting the urge to swear when his right shoulder throbbed. Well, that was gonna bruise.
"Alright...that hurts." Danny reached over and rubbed gingerly at his shoulder, hoping it wasn't going to be too bad. Flying would be out for a little while at least...That made his stomach sink - what was he going to do until it fixed? Depressed, he dropped down at the base of the tree, easing his wings out enough to let him lean against the trunk and close his eyes. Just great.

A yawn split the jaws of a sixteen year old boy as he strolled across the the school grounds. Matthias was bored, to say the least. His school bag was slung over his shoulder though it contained no actual school work. Instead he was using it to carry an assortment of things he had been hoping would hold his attention. Instead the DS, soccer ball, and other knickknacks had failed to entertain him. Now he was walking like a mindless zombie (or at least that's what he was comparing the stroll to in his head). He couldn't even listen to music since his iPod was currently dead.
Stretching while he walked, he noted that his path was taking him rather close to the forest. He wasn't really a big fan of forests; having grown up in a city he thought it was rather weird to see so many trees in once place. Usually he only hung out there when he was with a group of friends or something. It was a good place to play games and sometimes climbing trees was fun. He wasn't very good at the climbing part though... More often than not he would cheat and use his powers to help him get to the higher branches.
There was something interesting about the woods today though. Matty had to blink, rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn't seeing things. It looked like a boy had just fallen out of a really tall tree. Concerned, he started running for the spot, teleporting mid-stride to get their faster. Of course, that was never a good idea for him. The momentum of his speed knocked him off balance when he reappeared and he ended up running smack into another tree. For a long minute he just sat there, rubbing his head where he'd hit it against the trunk.
Once he was sure he was alright, Matty got up and reshouldered his bag. Then he started looking for the boy he'd seen fall. The red head have never been the type to leave someone in distress and as he'd been too busy having his own powers related accident he didn't know the outcome of the fall. He just wanted to make sure that the other guy was alright and that he wouldn't have to report to the headmistress about watching one of the students turn into a pancake. Peeking around another tree, he spotted the winged boy and offered a friendly smile. "Hey, you alright? I saw you fall!"

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? Ignoring the stares was easy, after all, they only wished they were having this much fun. Singing at the top of her lungs, Ryder danced to the music blasting from her iPod's ear buds. She grinned at the disgruntled looks of the other students, before turning away. At least she couldn't hear their thoughts right now, that was a plus. Sometimes she needed a break from the constant stream of opinions and judgements. Really, people were far too serious. The music was a release and with it as loud as it could go, it was simple to block everything else out. She didn't stop dancing until she felt a tap on her shoulder. Whirling around, she stared up at the teacher. With a lopsided grin she pulled one ear bud out, raising an eyebrow. "Can I help ya?"
"Miss, you're causing a disturbance." The agitated stream of thoughts hit her before she could stop to make sense of them. She really didn't need her power to know that the teacher was irritated. Just another person who didn't know how to have fun.
"I was. Maybe you should try it sometime. It's fun, I promise." The thoughts that followed weren't the nicest of things, but she kept back the cringe that she was feeling. Play it off like you don't know. Not everybody at the school knew her power was telepathy, otherwise they always tried to do something weird, like think of a brick wall or something out of some weird fantasy novel. As if that cliche stuff actually worked. She grinned again.
"Make sure you mind yourself next time, Miss. Wouldn't want such a nice young lady like yourself getting into trouble." 'the insolent brat.' Of course the last was only said in the teacher's mind. Not always such a handy power to have. Still, Ryder wouldn't trade it for anything.
"No promises, but thanks for the advice. I gotta go." Without waiting for a proper response, she stuck her earbud back in and jogged away, leaving the teacher speechless. Such silly people, thinking that a warning like that would stop her from having fun. After running a ways, she started to realize she was getting into the outskirts of the school. The forest. Now there was an interesting idea. Surely she could think of something to do there.
Continuing to sing, she made her way into the trees. A flash of something caught her eye and she turned, but it disappeared just as quickly as it came. Pulling an earbud from her ear, thoughts rammed into her mind, followed by a verbal voice. Sometimes it was hard to tell which was which. They seems friendly, if not a bit down. Well, the first one seemed a bit upset, where as the other, he sounded… concerned. Serious again, she thought with a sigh. Leaving the one earbud to dangle, she followed the flow of thoughts, till she saw both of them. Wings. So Silas students, definitely. She grinned she pulled herself up into a tree, sitting there with her legs dangling as she watched them. "Why so serious?" Cheesy movie quotes, check.

Danny stretched his legs out and heaved a frustrated sigh. He could take a little inactivity, but...not flying for who-knows-how-long? He was going to go insane...it was probably going to drive him to jump off the roof next time. Only he wouldn't be able to catch himself! ...Even thinking about it jokingly was making his stomach go all wobbly, and he scrubbed one hand against his stomach with a scowl. How pathetic was that? A winged guy who was afraid of falling...
He had just dropped his head back against the tree when he heard the first voice. "Hey," Danny jerked in surprise and twisted, wincing when his injuring wing got pulled into a funny position. A copper-haired boy was leaning around the tree, his friendly-looking face pulled into a look of concern. That wasn't something Danny was really used to seeing - he didn't have any really close friends at Silas (except, maybe Alex) and had been away from his Mom for some time - and he blinked a little blankly up as the boy continued. "you alright? I saw you fall!"
"Fall?" Work, Brain! Work! Confused, Danny blinked up at the tree above him, his brain clicking suddenly back into motion. "Oh, no, I didn't fall. I jumped." He would have gone on, but a new voice appeared, and he was busy searching for the source. For a minute, he was convinced it was one of the invisible kids from the school. And then he saw the foot dangling down from a nearby tree. He followed it up to a knee, and then up to a girl perched up in the branches. She was about his age, and pretty in a tom-boy kind of way, with an ear bud hanging down her front that pumped out music Danny could hear from where he sat. He smiled at her movie reference - but only pointed overhead with a cheerful smile. "I threw myself out of a tree. And..." He glanced over at the red-head, realized he didn't have a name to put with him, and shrugged, "this guy was checking to make sure I hadn't killed myself."

Matty's eyes widened a little. He hadn't meant to startle the other boy. He was just concerned, wanting to know that the kid was alright. The boy didn't like seeing others in trouble and always wanted to help when he could. And who knew? Maybe he would end up making a new friend because of it. He liked having friends, lots of friends, and wasn't about to pass up an opportunity to be even a little social.
"You jumped?" His voice was mixed with surprise, awe, and a bit of ludicrous as he stared at Danny. What would possess someone to jump out of a tree? Especially from that high up? It was madness! It was daring! It was... well, actually, it was kind of cool. The fact that the winged boy had jumped from so high and seemed to be no worse for the wear to an outside observer was astounding. Maybe he was in training to be a stunt double or something. Either way, Matty couldn't help being a little awed.
Like Danny he turned his head, searching for the girl's voice that was butting in. He had had no idea that someone else was around. Grinning brightly, he nodded his head while Wings continued to elaborate. "You shoulda seen it! It was kinda cool. Except for the part where I thought I was gonna find him as a pancake... But look he's all okay and stuff!" It was definitely easy for the kid to be more positive when no one was hurt and everyone seemed friendly. Which is why he had no qualms about introducing himself. "I'm Matty."

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? He threw himself out of a tree? Ryder wasn't sure whether to be concerned or impressed, though she was leaning heavily on the side of being impressed. Come on, he did have wings, so she was pretty sure death had never been an option. Still though, it was pretty darn amazing even with the wings. She grinned at the odd pair, both of them looking slightly less serious than they had a moment ago. With the ear bud still in one ear she was able to block out most of their thoughts, though some still filtered through and she just didn't have the energy to stop it. Still swinging her legs, she leaned forward and listened while nodding her head. "You know, I think the point of wings is to avoid hitting the ground. Why jump if you can fly?" Wings… what an insanely awesome power.
Ryder couldn't help the laugh as she listened to the red head talk. "And stuff. An excellent description." Hopping down from the tree limb, she made her way down where the two Silas students were. She grinned at them both, tilting her head to the side as she considered the ridiculous situations that she always met people in. "Well now that there's no dead body I suppose I can relax." Looking up she followed the tree up to its impossible height and by the time her eyes finally landed on the top she let out a low whistle and spoke in a teasing voice, "I don't think I'll be jumping out of that tree anytime soon. I've never been fond of pancakes, let alone becoming one."
"It might be the kid in me, well actually I know it is, but dang, I can't believe I missed it!" Shaking her head she turned her attention back to them both. "Ryder." She answered in response to the red head's introduction. "So how'd you get here so fast? I was pretty sure I saw you running and then you just vanished. Which, while my eyes have been known to play tricks on me, is something I gotta say is a little unusual." She cast a curious glance over at the winged guy. Maybe staring wasn't polite, but it was hard not to. The wings were awesome and it made looking away harder than it usually was for Ryder. She turned back to Matty with a smile.

Danny couldn't help grinning at the red-head's reaction to his comment about jumping. There was something in his look that Danny thought might resemble awe. About him? That was...unusual. Danny had been at Silas for a while, and he had gotten some of the wide-eyed looks before from the other students - particularly when he first showed up. And this wasn't the first time someone had caught him doing something potentially suicidal. But the looks he got were usually surprise, or looks that made him think the person suspected he was mentally unstable. Someone thinking it was cool was...weird.
And the girl in the tree wasn't looking at him like he was crazy, either. Well...not totally anyway. Her comment made him laugh, and he spread his arms out. "Hey, I didn't hit the ground, so obviously my wings are functioning. And the jump was to test what I could do." He spread his wings slightly, wincing when his right shoulder responded with an ache. "Obviously less than I thought."
He laughed at the idea of a Danny-pancake - though the idea of hitting the ground made him feel slightly nauseated once again, and he quickly had to force himself to focus on the girl's words. She would have been worked up at his death? How considerate. "Aw, I'm touched my death would've upset you." He grinned cheekily, and followed her gaze up. Now he felt embarrassed about jumping out of the tree, but he only shrugged at the girl. "Ah, it wasn't so bad. I'll take you sometime, if you want, and then you won't have to worry about getting pancaked."
As soon as she started saying she was sorry she missed his jump, Danny ducked his head self-consciously. Meaning he was thrilled to have the distraction of introductions. When they were finished, he raised a hand in a half-wave, and offered his own name. "I'm Danny. Nice to meet you guys." He was about to add a question about the others' powers, since they knew his and it only seemed fair to share, but Ryder had already started a question of her own. Curious, Danny turned to Matty as well, meaning he only thought he saw Ryder watching him out of the corner of his eye. He tried not to fidget under her look, and wondered instead what had happened with Matty. Because if he was a teleporter, than that was cool. Way cooler than having wings, Danny thought.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? Ryder shook her head with a grin as he protested. "Functioning maybe. But you still seem to be a bit banged up. So maybe they could use a tune up?" She winked, even knowing the suggestion was absurd. Truth be told, Ryder was always a bit better with mechanical things than those of the living, breathing sort. Give her a car, a motorcycle, anything other than an animal or a person. Not that she had anything against helping them, it was just, usually, nothing she did ever helped. She couldn't help the small peek into his thoughts when he winced, but retreated just as quickly when she had figured out that he really wasn't hurt too badly. The last thing she wanted to deal with was having to carry some guy who fainted back to town, especially with those wings. She eyed them. They looked heavy.
"Hah, upset me?" She motioned to herself with fake shock. "My dear boy, you misunderstand. It would have been an inconvenience." Her smile drooped for a second and she scrutinized him carefully. "But seriously, don't go dying on me or anything. Not that I don't enjoy a good bit of excitement. But that's a bit over the top." The grin resurfaced and she crossed her arms, trying to hide the anticipation that his words had caused. He'd take her? Heck yes! "Well, I'd never past up on the opportunity to fly. I mean, come on now, who would?" Wasn't flying everyone's dream? "Before you say people with a fear of heights. They aren't afraid of being high, they're afraid of hitting the ground. So, problem solved." She smiled, albeit a bit smugly.
Without waiting for any kind of response, she settled onto the ground, crossing her legs as she looked up at him. The earbud worked its way loose and fell from her ear. Instantly, a flood of thoughts pounded against her mind and she let out a slight groan, placing a hand on her forehead as she struggled to adjust. The sudden rush of thoughts was always the worst. She raised a hand and put the earbud back in. Pain ebbed from her mind and the thoughts quieted. Quirking her mouth into a half smile, she looked up at Danny sheepishly.
"Well, I usually wait to explain my craziness, but I suppose there was an unspoken question." Of course, neither things were true. She did whatever the heck she wanted, even if it did mean people found out she was telepathic, and that unspoken question, not so unspoken to her. She knew he wanted to know, but she was honestly wary of telling him. He seemed nice, funny even and… Dangit! She really wanted to go flying. 'Well, kiss that dream goodbye.' Most people weren't too happy when they found out her power. She listened to her music for a second, before looking back up at him. "Would you like to take a guess? I've always been fond of guessing games." Her eyelids lowered and she looked away. "Mainly because there isn't much guessing involved for me." She said the words in his mind. Maybe telling him would be better, but Ryder wasn't really known for her tact.

Danny had always hated how his face showed his emotions with virtually no filter. The same was true today, and he flushed scarlet before he realized Ryder's comment had been an innocent one, and not an attempt at flirting. Maybe he could still salvage it... He cleared his throat very quietly, and then grinned, pretending his face hadn't changed colors - it was the most effective way he could find to eventually stop blushing - as he laughed a moment too late, "As long as that doesn't mean you're going to be swinging a wrench at my head." His grin felt more relaxed now, and he shrugged carefully, "I'll probably just stay off it, and it'll get better before long." He thought. He hoped.
Her feigned nonchalance made him laugh, and even the more sincere comment about dying brought out a smile. "Right, because nothing else at Silas is over the top in the excitement area." It was his turn to wink, and he tried to look like he wasn't joking when he said, "But I'll do my best. It's a tough job here. Have you met-" He broke off, suddenly realizing he still didn't know the name of the guy from the movie theater. That had been almost a year ago...he made a mental note to work harder at tracking down what's-his-face, and then brought himself back to reality with a slight shake and embarrassed smile, "Uh...never mind, I guess."
Fortunately, her reaction to the offer of flying was better than Danny had expected. Not that she jumped and screamed, or anything, but her arms folded and he thought her eyes looked excited. "I think a fear of hitting the ground probably shows a healthy survival instinct. I'm just saying." He grinned to hide the panic that rolled through the base of his stomach at that thought. He'd been flying for years, but there was still that nauseating conviction - just for a split second - that he was going to crash and die every time he launched into the air. That was probably not a good thing to share with Ryder moments after offering to take her up. He was opening his mouth to reassure her that - as soon as his wing was up to - he'd be willing to take her up, when she winced suddenly from her new position on the ground.
"Are you-?" He broke off at her upraised hand, and instead watched curiously as she reached to return her escaped earbud to its place. It wasn't it until she'd gotten settled and shot him an embarrassed half smile that he relaxed back into his own spot. "There was definitely a question." He was at least glad that this weirdness was apparently normal, though that didn't necessarily mean she wasn't going to pass out or something. He thought he could carry her back, since she was skinny...but she was only a couple inches shorter than he was, and he really hoped it didn't come to that... Ryder's suggestion made him groan, though it was mostly good-natured, and he answered before he had actually processed where the comment came from. "I've always hated them; I'm terrib-" He broke off with a sudden intake of breath, and stared open-mouthed at her. That comment, that thought had come in her voice! "You're a telepath?!" She had read his thoughts...she had - Danny blushed once again as he realized that what she might have heard. "Well that makes things...somewhat awkward... Have you been listening in the whole time?" There was still hope! Besides, he was sort of curious about her, since she was the first telepath he'd met. He leaned forward curiously, frowning in thought as he asked, "Is it listening? Or do you have to, like, poke into my head to hear them?"

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? His thoughts brushed against her mind but she pushed them away, trying to focus on what he was actually saying. She didn't have the energy to keep up with a two sided conversation. It was hard enough to focus just on the vocal part without taking into account all his thoughts while he was speaking. Too complicated and Ryder was getting sick of things being complicated. She watched him with a growing sense of curiosity as he turned an unusual shade of red. He was embarrassed, that much was apparent. Yet Ryder had no idea why he would be. She hadn't said or done anything, had she? "A wrench? Well I am a bit better with a wrench than most things. But I figured in this case it would be a bit counterproductive." She smiled and attempted to dismiss the thoughts of confusion.
This time she couldn't help but pick up the traces of his thoughts. A darkened move theatre and a brief conversation. After that she caught brief glimpses of wings… wings where there shouldn't be. Then it was gone and he was smiling at her again, with that embarrassed look. She raised and eyebrow. "Well, Silas is supposed to be safe for…" People like us seemed like such a trite and terrible was to say what she meant. This time, she was the one who shook her head. "I guess certain students can make survival a bit challenging." She'd met her share of those kinds of students. All in all though, Silas was far better than where she used to live. Without realizing it, her hand moved and lightly touched the spot on her lower back where her worst memory was forever printed. Her hand fell back to her side and she looked up at Danny with a lopsided smile.
"I can't argue with that. But still, living on the edge is good. Better than always playing it safe and never doing anything exciting." Her smile wavered at his line of thinking. If he was always nervous then maybe it wasn't safe? She'd just seem him crash into the ground after all… But still, she wanted to fly, no matter the risk. Besides, everyone was a bit paranoid about their own abilities. Danny was probably just overly cautious about flying. Although his recent leap seemed to say otherwise.
She ran a hand through her hair roughly, agitated that he responded with the same shock that bordered on horror when he figured it out. "That would be correct. You catch on a lot faster than most people." She grinned, though it came out hesitant, not at all as confident as she usually was. At his questions she couldn't help but laugh. He was genuinely worried about what she might have 'overheard'. "No, I haven't been listening. Not at all really. Not to try and sound like a saint though. Because I usually do." She tilted her head and considered him, leaning closer towards her and frowning as he tried to figure it out. "It's more like… A whole flood of thoughts and images. Often disjointed and a little incoherent if you're not used to it. The more people there are the harder it is to block out, but with only a few people I can usually do it at will. But sometimes my control just… slips. And everything pounds against my own thoughts." She grimaced, remembering the pain that always came with that slip in control. Tugging absent-mindedly at her earbuds, she gave a halfhearted smile. "Nothing special. But flying… I'd love that."
She pushed herself to an upright position once again, standing up and shifting back and forth as her eyes kept catching on his wings. "I've never met anyone who can block my abilities. But I've always wanted to figure out if someone could. It'd be nice… to know there was someone I couldn't read." Ryder shook her head and let out a laugh. "Wow… that got a heck of a lot more serious than I usually let it." She grinned at Danny, letting the carefree attitude return. "So don't get all awkward on me, okay? It's no fun to talk to someone who's freaking out about what they might be thinking and what I might be hearing. I tend to avoid listening in on paranoid thoughts."

Danny was too busy hoping Ryder didn't figure out why he was blushing to notice her curiosity, even when he was grinning at her. Fortunately for him, she didn't seem set on figuring it out. He chuckled at the comment and nodded fervently. "My thoughts exactly. I've never heard that repeated hits from a metal object were good for bruises." And this was one of those rare things he was willing to believe the scientists/doctor/people knew what they were talking about. There had to get something right, anyway...
He stumbled out of his memories in time to see her eyebrows raised. She trailed off at the end of a comment, and he nodded understandingly. Personally, he would have probably said "people like us," but that might not be the most tactful approach. Even so, he thought it was kind of silly to act like they weren't different from everyone else. He dodged away from that thought and smiled at the idea that some people made life difficult That was certainly one way to say it. "Just a bit. But I will overcome that challenge!" He pumped a fist into the air as she touched her back - he wondered if she was hurt, but she didn't seem like she was in pain - and then matched her smile for smile. "Otherwise life's no fun, right?"
There was some truth in what she said, but Danny wasn't sure he was so "all or nothing" about it. In fact..."You know, that's the sort of attitude that gets people killed doing dumb stuff." Like jumping out of trees. After a second of thought, he shrugged, "Though, I guess that's got to be one of the better ways to go. If it has to happen anyway." He should probably stop talking like he thought his power was going to get him killed, or she'd never let him take her up. Why that mattered so much now, he wasn't sure, except maybe that he really wanted the chance to fly with someone.
Danny's first reaction to the news of Ryder's power was shock, followed quickly by guilt when he saw her reaction. He considered apologizing, but she was speaking before he had the chance to actually form the words. "Well, thank you. Or...sorry? I'm not really sure." He chuckled nervously, realizing too late that he might just be making an awkward moment worse. Oh well, his panicked question about what she'd heard probably didn't help. ...Unless, of course, she laughed at him. She helped to further lessen the panic by saying she hadn't heard his earlier thoughts - he was saved! He had to wrestle with the urge to whoop loudly and dance from his sitting position. Now he just had to make sure he didn't think something stupid like that again when she was listening, and then he'd be alright. That was going to be hard to do if she really did just get a flood from the people around her...maybe he'd get lucky and have that just as a one-time thing...except he was thinking about it, and so he had probably jinxed himself.
"Oh, come one," he blushed - in pleasure this time - and ducked his face. "Flying isn't all that great. I mean, it's sort of as good as it's going to get, you know?" He had thought that before, and he didn't mean it in a bad way - he loved being able to fly and having wings - but he didn't think it was all that exciting either.
Ryder stood suddenly and Danny looked up in surprise, resisting the urge to start squirming when he could see her watching his wings. It was hard when they reacted to him and shifted, the feathers rustling quietly with every movement. She seemed sorta lost in her own thoughts, though, and he let his head tilt as she spoke. Could you learn to block her, he wondered? He'd like to, if he could, so she'd have someone to hang out with. She laughed, breaking the suddenly tense air, and he grinned back. "I dunno, it sounds like paranoid thought might be the way to go. You know, to guarantee you're not listening." He grinned so she'd know he was joking, though. She had a point about relaxing and not thinking too hard about thinking - why make it harder than it was already going to be?
