Danny lay sprawled across the floor of the dorm room on his stomach with his wings stretched out a little on either side of him as he in and out of a doze. The original plan had been to take a shower that was hot enough to relax the throb from his shoulder, and then lie down on his big, squishy bed and fall asleep for a long time. The execution had not gone quite so well, and he was lucky that he had made it through the door before giving up and just crashing to the ground. The rug his mom had brought on one of her visits wasn't very big, but it was big enough and it was so soft. Sometimes it still smelled like home, too. The smell wasn't there today, but the squishy comfort was, and he soaked as much of that up as he could.
So far the day hadn't been a completely bad one. He had damaged his wing, but had also made two new friends, had discovered that his wing was functioning at least well enough to stretch out, though not to fly, and he had finally gotten his schedule. Now all Danny needed was to find his roommate and find out what he was like.
His roommate...Danny was a little nervous about that, and the thought pulled him from his nap. All of last year, the winged boy had lived in his own room, and having that changed was going to be…interesting. He sort of thought there was about a 50% chance of having a roommate going well. But what if he got the orange-eyed kid from last semester? Or the guy from the movie theater. That would be fun. And it would only probably end in someone dying. Arg! He was making himself more nervous than anything, now! A distraction, that’s what he needed…
Danny picked up his head and swung a hand toward his phone. It was just out of reach. How had that even happened? He had put it just next to him and, what…it had grown legs and walked off? He hated when electronics did that. ”Come back! I’m too bored for this!” Straining, he managed to just brush the phone’s edge with his fingertips, making it spin slightly as it slid out of reach. ”Dang it!”

The duffel bag thumped lightly against his legs with each step. Lukan couldn't help but steel his jaw at the obnoxious pointy substance that continued to dig into him with every metronome like swing of the bag. There was always something pointy in a bag that was too full to rifle through. Just the universe having fun teasing humans through coincidences. You'd think as non humans the students at Silas would get a little slack on universal torture, but Luk had yet to see an example. Instead he'd been deserted, abused, and recently dropped off at a boarding school where people all wanted to help him. It was the helping that seemed to make him squirm the most. He could do things on his own, and even when he couldn't he would insist he still had the capability. The people here were just.. too helpful and nosy. Why couldn't they all keep out of his business?
Whatever their reasons, Lukan wasn't left alone. In fact, he realized upon arrival that he was to be assigned a roommate. His foster family apparently knew him just well enough to have not told him earlier. It wasn't that Lukan was entirely unsociable, but he feared other knowing too much about him. Whenever he got too close to someone it seemed that's when he'd always get hurt. He was so tired of getting hurt.
Eventually he swung the duffel back to his other shoulder, and low and behold there's a pointy object on that side too! He just couldn't win. Luk rolled his eyes at the pesky object and tossed it on the ground, then continued to drag it behind him. Lukan was still dragging the bag when he reached the dorm room. The room number was displayed proudly on the door, and in clearly defined print. Yet he still hesitated. Was this his room? Maybe he should go back to the head office to find out. He could have always heard wrong. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Lukan sure had a lot of them today, but after what felt like a minute of standing at the door he came to a reluctant decision to go inside. He'd after to go in sooner or later.
The door swung open after a quick twist of the key, and he was faced with an older teen... least he thought he was a teen. The guy could have been twenty or so. Maybe it was the way that was acting that seem more teen like; shouting at a cell phone. Lukan stifled a quick laugh, determined to keep a heavy wall around his emotions. Course that wall nearly denigrated when he noticed one key detail about his roommate. "You have wings! Holy shit you have wings!" Right, like Danny didn't notice that. Well if he didn't Lukan was surely going to point it out. As a new student to the school, he couldn't help but fall to disbelief every time someone showed him a power. His was an annoyance, but everyone else had a power that was almost always amazing or unreal. Sometimes he felt jealousy towards the other students and their powers, but more often than not he was left feeling too dumbstruck to feel anything else. Such a case was now, with Lukan standing in the doorway with a confused awe plastered onto his face.

Danny had heard the thumping and shhh noise of something being dragged, but his brain made no urging to investigate. They were still in the time of year when kids were moving into and returning to dorm rooms, and so that sort of noise was pretty normal. And by the time it had stopped outside his door, he was too busy arguing with his phone to notice anymore.
As soon as said phone had spun out of reach, he groaned and let his head drop with a thump on to the floor. It was only there for a second before he started to push himself to his hands and knees so he could go after it. If he had a roommate, he could bully the other guy into getting it for him, but no-o-o, this "Lukan" guy had to go and take forever! Almost as soon as he started moving, he heard the voice behind him, and it scared him so bad that he was on his feet and facing the door in a heartbeat. All his muscles had gone on high alert and his wings were halfway unfurled, poised to launch him into the air. Because that would work so well here.
Danny assumed the boy standing in the doorway was his new roommate. He looked quite a bit younger than Danny, though he was only a couple inches shorter, and seemed normal enough. That ruled out a lot of the physical mutations...not that doing that really cut down the list of possibilities very much. Danny was going to guess his mutation wasn't wings of any sort, because Lukan was staring at Danny's white wings with awe. It took a few minutes for Danny to force his heart out of his throat and back into his chest, and then he made an unintelligible noise and jabbed a hand at the younger guy. "You scared the - what are you-?" This wasn't working. He stopped and took a breath as his wings relaxed with a shake and a rustle that settled his thoughts back into order. "Yeah, I've...uh...got wings. You don't. Now we've both pointed out the obvious!" He smiled cheekily at the kid and took a step forward, offering his hand as he went. "I guess you're Lukan? I'm Danny."

Luk's eyes stayed fixed on Danny's wings, no matter how quickly and rapidly his roommate may have moved. Those were wings... people don't have wings. Not even freaks at Silas have wings! Okay maybe that wasn't true, but by the way Luk was staring at the feathery appendages you would have thought that idea very possible. Even the quick movement of Danny's hand failed to draw Luk's attention away from the wings. However, the older male's voice partially awakened him from his stupor. "You scared the - what are you-?" He blinked, slowly pushing away shock in favor of simple movement and speech. "What am..." Once again Lukan blinked, but this time he also ran a hand through his hair. Right, he didn't have a handicap so he should probably act like it. The words came flowing. "I'm human... I think. But you," His eyes traveled up and down his wings, "are something... a bird person thing."
Luk suddenly jumped back as Danny rustled his wings. "They move! Oh my god. They. Move." He pointed, as though his roommate was completely unaware of the movement he controlled. Lukan had originally half believed that perhaps the wings were fake, as though duct taped on to prank the young teen. Well, he was definitely freaking out like a Punk'd contestant so job well done Danny. Least that's what he would have thought if his wings hadn't suddenly rustled. Now he was surprised at reality, and the shadow stuck to his feet twitched and silently buzzed with excitement. It was if the shadow knew when it would be free to bounce around the wall as it pleased, and that was when Lukan was occupied with emotions. Surprise and shock would do just that.
His shadows weren't given the chance just yet though, as Luk had slowly began to calm down. He lifted his head up, stared hard at the ceiling and exhaled. When he looked down there was a hand extended for him, "I guess you're Lukan? I'm Danny." The teen's eyes slowly drifted away from Danny's wings and instead proceeded to stare at his hand warily, as though it was a snake that may bite him. He pulled the walls back up as his shock began to fall away. Those walls were cracked though. Danny had caught him so off guard with the wings that he simply could not gain back the concentration required for him to hide his true self. Lukan smiled back, and he couldn't help it. "I'm Lukan... or Luk. Just don't call me Luky." His hand shook Danny's and he laughed. "Not Lucky either." He instantly wanted to recall his laugh, suck it back in along with his words. Lukan wished the handshake was brisk and informal, but it wasn't. The walls were toppled down, and at least momentarily Lukan couldn't figure out how to bring them back up.
Though internally distressed by his lack of ability to control his friendliness, on the outside he remained open if not a little disheveled. He hated it. "So which bed did you call? Assuming you're not sleeping on the floor." Behind him he dragged the duffel bag, ready to throw it onto the free bed. It was all too laid back, too friendly.. it was frightening. His insides felt twisted, and once again the shadows flickered and bunched up behind him as though ready to pounce.

Danny felt somewhat better to see that Lukan was just as thrown -off at their meeting as he had been. His new roommate looked a little like he'd been hit between the eyes and was having a lot of trouble recovering. The sudden words that came as Lukan looked his wings over made him laugh a little, and he posed with his hands on his hips and his chest puffed. "I am...birdman!" Might as well do what he could to make the kid feel comfortable - he didn't seem used to all the weirdness that was Silas yet. And judging from the way he yelled out at the noise of Danny's wings, it was going to take a while for him to get the that comfort level. Freaking out as his reply probably wasn't the best choice, but Danny couldn't help stumbling back in surprise.
"Woah, relax!" He put his hands up and made calming motions. "Course they move. If they didn't, they wouldn't be much good for flying. ...Though I guess I could glide. Like one of those flying squirrels!" Now that he thought of it, he was going to have to try that sometime. He'd be Danny, the Amazing Human Flying Squirrel! ...Didn't have quite the ring that the Amazing Spiderman did...
Danny was pulled out of his thoughts by Lukan's movement as he suddenly lifted his face to the ceiling and breathed slowly. Right...he was supposed to be trying not to weird the new kid out. He decided to try for the introduction, and was a little put-out when Lukan stared distrustfully at his outstretched hand. Not to be deterred, Danny stubbornly kept it where it was. And was rewarded after a minute with a smile and a confirmation on his name, as well as a nickname! As soon as Lukan had forbidden Luky, Danny opened his mouth to ask about "Lucky," and then snapped it shut in disappointment. "Well, that's just no fun...What happens if, hypothetically, I call you Lucky anyway?" It occurred to Danny suddenly that it sounded like a pet's name, and he wondered what kind of looks that would get them in the halls. ...Maybe he wouldn't Lukan that after all.
At Lukan's question, Danny shook his head with a smile. "Nah, I don't usually sleep on the floor. It's happened before, but my bed the one with the stuffed angel on it, because my mom thinks she's got a since of humor." Danny grinned as he gestured left of the door, toward his bed for the past two years. The doll in question had been one of the presents his mom had brought (along with the squishy rug), and had insisted that he keep in on his bed to remember her. This had never been an issue before now, since none of Danny's friends had ever spent any real amount of time in his room, and he hadn't had a roommate. Now he was forced to wrestle with the slight embarrassment it brought on - it was a gift from his mom, how could he not have it out, right? ...Sure...that'd do...he supposed.
He cleared his throat and turned to scoop up his phone (which suddenly seemed to be closer to the mattress once more) in an attempt to cover his thoughts. When he straightened again, he was back to his normal smiling look. "So, it seems a little unfair that you know my power and I don't know yours..." He left it at that not-so-subtle hint as he waited for his new roommate to take his stuff to the free bed. Not that he wouldn't push if Lukan tried to hide it - opening up about powers was a very important step in accepting them and learning to control them, in Danny's opinion. ...And had nothing to do with Danny's nosiness...nothing whatsoever...
