Again Lukan shook out his hand with annoyance, sending the dark mass wafting back to the floor. His lip curled in a silent snarl as the shadow slowly crept back to his leg like an apologetic child. The bitter teen quickly stamped the form against the tile and with no reserve. These things.. these obnoxious little things were keeping him here! He was not about to coddle some shadow or show any sort of compassion to his power. Lukan shook his head, grabbing at his temples in exasperation. "Look at me.. treating a shadow like a living being. I'm going insane. Those things... this place is driving me crazy." The frustrated teen tilted his head back and eyed the bathroom mirror out of his peripheral vision. "I'm also talking to myself." Narrowed eyes glared back at him and mimicked his tired anger; an expression he recognized too well. Lukan didn't know whether to celebrate or sigh at his discovery. Perhaps he was happy with having proved his foster parents wrong about liking Silas Academy. On the other hand, it didn't feel right to be happy about being... unhappy? "I'm truly losing my mind."
Lukan crept back into his room after hurriedly washing his face. Hopefully he'd scrubbed away some of his confusion with the dirt. Either way, there was work to be done that couldn't be ignored because of a little self destruction. If anything else, it meant he needed to work faster. Luk dumped an empty duffel bag onto his bed before shoveling piles of clothing into it. He moved quickly and stopped only to make sure his roommate was still asleep. Lukan had grown accustomed to running away over the years, whether it be from home or Silas, and he knew the key was to not waste time. Any second spent foolishly meant another second in captivity. That was exactly how Lukan viewed the academy; a cage. His captors happened to be his own damn power. While he couldn't shake off his ability, Luk could sure run away from Silas.
The zipped up bag made his decision feel final and he nodded approvingly. Within moments he'd left the dorm. Forever, he hoped. Lukan shifted the duffel bag on his shoulder before darting down the stairs, leading a very ecstatic shadow posse. The teen snarled and whipped his head in the direction of the misshapen dark mass. "Leave me al-" A sudden noise from around the corner silenced Luk. The guards.. Or a teacher, more or less. An obstacle no doubt. The boy moved back a few paces until he too was hidden behind a corner. Gradually the footsteps grew quieter and Lukan was soon making a mad dash to the stairwell. Luk clambered down the steps, moving with serious precision until he burst through the front doors. Only then did he allow himself a small smile. Freedom.
His happiness was kept brief however, as Lukan was soon concentrating on the next task; leaving the entire campus behind. Last time he tried to escape he didn't even make it past the dorm entrance. Luk half hoped their only real "security" resided in the dorms, but he was still doubtful. As he moved by the girl's dorm, the runaway kept a watchful gaze for more of the academy's faculty... or search lights. It was easy to think of Silas as some sort of top notch prison, but Lukan already promised himself a successful escape. He just needed a little persistence.

With eyes red and heavy from sleep, Alex sat on the window seat in her room, gazing blankly at the night sky as she tried to ignore the booming music that seeped through the walls from her neighbor’s room. Actually, the music wasn’t nearly as bad as the violent shouts, coming from the same room, that startled her to consciousness not ten minutes before. The healer had to sit through the two girls’ heated argument until now, which Alex deduced was triggered by one of the girls accusing the other of stealing her box of cookies. Oreos, to be specific. At one point Alex even resorted to banging the wall with her fists, but her only response was even louder bangs from the other side. Then came the music. Perfect.
With every passing minute, the idea of waiting out the storm grew less and less appealing to Alex. How much longer could they keep at it? Does sleep not sound the least bit interesting to them? This wasn’t the first time her neighbor’s pulled something like this, but it had never gone on for this long and this late into the night. Just as she thought it couldn’t get any worse, the loud thundering of drums competed with the blasting music, threatening to drown it out. Alex leapt to her feet and headed straight for her closet where she grabbed the first sweater she saw, then proceeded to slip on some shoes before storming out of her room. She was surprised that Rini hadn’t woken up, the noise even permeated into their little common room. After grabbing her keys off of a table, she slid out of the dorm and headed down the hall, but not before giving her neighbor’s door a solid kick, which she knew they wouldn’t even hear.
Alex had an easy time slipping out of the girl’s dorm room, since apparently there were no faculty members on duty to patrol the first floor. Maybe she should bring it up to the headmistress? As she quietly let the door shut behind her, Alex noticed another student up and about, heading away from the dorms with a suspiciously large bag and an even more suspicious look to him. He was a somewhat younger student that Alex didn’t recognize, making Alex feel even more obligated to find out what he was up to, though she had a pretty decent hunch. As she walked toward him, Alex tried to get his attention in a hushed voice, “Hey! Where are you going?”
Glancing over her shoulders, Alex sped up her pace, trying to catch up to the younger student. The look on his face just about made her stop and turn around and run back to her room, but instead she decided to try to see if she could lighten his mood. “So, nice night for a stroll huh? Actually my neighbors woke me up, fighting over a box of cookies. Cookies for cry out loud! Ridiculous right? I’m Alex by the way, nice to…” When she realized that she wasn’t getting anywhere, she sighed a little before nodding towards his bag and asking in a soft voice, “Why are you running?

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? "Of all the ridiculous, stupid, petty things! Cookies? Are you being serious?" Ryder knew she was yelling and without even glancing at any of the nearby clocks, she also knew it was late… very late. Her roommate stood across from her, hurling the accusation of being a cookie thief. The thought was laughable and at any other moment, Ryder would have laughed. Maybe later she would, when she wasn't busy dealing with her pit bull of a roommate. She'd never met someone so angry all the freaking time. In fact, Ryder had never met someone she hadn't found something good about. But as of yet, she hadn't found one redeeming quality in Jackie. "I didn't steal your stupid cookies! I don't eat oreos without milk and we're out of milk." Okay, it probably wasn't the best comeback, but it was reasonably absurd for such a pathetic claim.
She listened to the ranting for a moment and finally just held up her hand. Apparently not something Jackie took kindly to. With the countless number of thoughts and words coming from the girl standing in front of Ryder, she was going insane. Enough! Enough was enough! "I'll buy you another bag, just let it go!" Also not something that seemed to sit well with her lovely roommate. Dear lord, why had they put her in this room? The Headmistress said it was something about her personality being the best match for Jackie. Well, news to her, no amount of optimism was going to cure this foul tempered person. Then again, maybe it was just because it was late. Maybe she was just cranky. Ryder rolled her eyes, groaning. Why was she always making excuses for people?
Without waiting for a response of any kind, she turned abruptly and walked into her room, closing the door behind her with a bang. She flopped onto her bed with a groan, still listening to the infuriated shouts of her roommate, both verbal and nonverbal. With a sound that oddly resembled a growl, she pushed herself upright and turned on her music, letting it pound through her ears, feeling the rhythm of it pulse through the walls of her room. She could still hear the pounding from Jackie. Frustration caused her to clench her teeth in a scowl, eyes narrowed as she glared at the door that was thankfully still closed. She needed to relax. Her Ludwig drum set sat in the corner of her room like an open invitation. With a half smile she walked towards it, snagging the drum sticks and twirling them deftly before playing along with the song. The beat of the music lulled her into something that almost felt like peace. Muscle memory commanded her arms and feet, letting her mercifully stop thinking.
Until the music stopped. She jerked up as the flood of irate thoughts slammed against her. Cringing she heard the hollow ringing sound of Jackie's voice. No. She couldn't deal with this right now. No more fighting, no more screaming and yelling and arguing. Jumping up, she walked past her roommate, hurrying for fear that the girl would grab her arm as she went past. Thankfully, Jackie let her go out of the dorm room. Peace. The idea was tempting and it drew Ryder out of the dorm building altogether, out into the cool night air. The fresh breeze promising some manner of relief. Her hand tightened around the drumsticks she had forgotten to put down. Great.
More voices and more thoughts. She never could escape anything. One was desperate for exactly what she wanted. Escape and peace. Peace from inner demons and those that plagued him physically. She caught nothing more than glimpses of shadowy figures. It was odd, she could usually get fuzzy details of a face. The other was concerned. And in Ryder's opinion, they were both being far too serious. She walked closer, drawn towards people like she always was, despite the fact that she desperately wanted to avoid any more drama. "While I do agree arguing over cookies is crazy, give me a break. Oreo is a pretty great brand." Lame attempt at a joke, but that didn't stop Ryder from grinning at the odd pair of Silas students. "I could use a good run after that chaos. Don't blame you in the least."

Lukan's steps remained subtle against the concrete, but he wasn't afraid of being heard.. least not in that respect. If anything else, he feared his own heart beat would betray him. The frantic vessel was pounding against his rib cage so hard he felt a bone may break. To put it simply, Luk was a wee bit nervous. Back home his escape attempts were many and success was rare. Like mentioned earlier, he'd never even gotten to the first floor of the boys dorm let alone outside the entire building. Escaping from the campus wasn't his only problem either; it was staying free.
The teen glanced down at the tattoo on his left hand and ran a finger across the skin. Several birds fluttered out of a cage engraved in his wrist; a symbol for his freedom.. a seemingly nonexistent freedom. He got said tattoo soon after his father's arrest, and he thought it would forever hold meaning. But now it appeared his independence had been stripped away from him again. Perhaps if he could just make it past the academy's walls then he'd be able to not only find that freedom again, but keep it. I have to.
A sudden whisper sent Luk's heart into overdrive, seemingly slamming in his chest as he looked to his side in horror. No, his attempt couldn't end this quickly! He was so close.. he made it outside! Lukan straightened his posture and frowned with steely determination. He'd made his decision, and he was was not about to give up easily. As the figure moved closer to the light, Luk raised his lip in a snarl. This person would be the headmistress herself and he would have not changed his expression. More or less, Lukan expected some security guard ready to put of a fight, and he couldn't hide his disappointment upon seeing merely another student. He really did have an insane amount of anger to work out, and a fight may have done him good. Least that's what Luk thought.
Student or not, Lukan refused to show any signs of a pleasant nature. He spat, "Do I look like I care? Now leave me alone." The teen shifted the duffel bag on his shoulder and kept moving away from the dorm. He figured if he could just act uninterested then this girl would leave him alone, since half the time it worked. But tonight, the boy's luck seemed to be running thin. "I said, go away Silas border patrol!" Luk's voice mimicked a snake's hiss as he glowered at the older student. "I'm not about to have everything messed up by a- son of a gun there's more of them.." He ran both hands through his hair in pure frustration as the second girl came forward. Could this night get any worse?
Luk fixed his cold gaze on the two of them and growled irritably. "Look. I'm about to get out of this hell hole, now why don't you two go on that little run of yours while I play prison break?" The teen whirled around and started to walk away, exhaling slowly. Of all the people he thought could get in his way, he never imagined a fellow student would even consider trying it.

The frustration and displeasure in the boy’s face was as clear as day and Alex was suddenly hesitant to approach the boy. The way he looked at her and curled his lips reminded her of a predator guarding its kill, daring anyone to come near. Her attempts at lightening the mood were futile and the teen merely spat back his short retort in disdain before attempting to carry on with his escape. But as always, Alex persisted and meekly followed behind him before she asked why he was running. The healer winced at his response, there wasn’t so much as a hint of kindness in his voice. Border patrol? She was only trying to help. It was better that she found him before a professor did, or even the headmistress, right?
Before she could try to convince him that he was being rash and that an escape attempt would be unwise, another approaching student snagged his attention and caused his anger to flare even more. Alex recognized the girl’s voice as one of her neighbor’s, it was the one that stood accused of being a cookie thief. The healer wasn’t quite sure how to feel about seeing her neighbor after all that had happened. At least it’s her and not the crazy one. On different terms, Alex would have been amused by her attempt at a joke, but tonight the girl could only manage to crack a small smile before commenting, “You know your roommate is insane right? All of that over oreos. If I had a box of oreos I would have given them to her just to get her to shut up.” Keeping a box on hand just for that purpose didn’t seem like a half bad idea to Alex.
She’d almost forgotten about the runaway until his cold voice cut in, he obviously wasn’t in the mood for their company. Prison break? Could Silas really be that horrible of a place? To Alex and to many others, the academy was a sanctuary. It was a safe place where she could be herself without having to worry about her gifts being discovered and exploited by others. But it bothered Alex to know that Silas was a “hell hole” for this boy. Did he have a hard time fitting in and making friends? Or was he alienated by others because of his power? Whatever the cause, Alex wouldn’t just sit by, knowing that another student was hurting and living in misery in a place that was theoretically a haven for people like them.
As he turned and walked away, Alex glanced at her neighbor and whispered, “We should try to stop him. Even if he does make it out, where would he go?” Once again she trailed after the distressed teen, trying to convince him to stay as they made their way across the school grounds. “I don’t know why you’re running and since it’s obvious that you’re not going to tell me anything, at least listen.” Alex picked up her pace when the boy didn’t stop, heavily breathing in the cool nighttime air. “Will you please just stop for a second?” When he didn’t, Alex let out a sigh before quickly closing the space between them with a few long strides and reaching for his wrist. She latched on with a firm grasp, effectively bringing him to a stop.
“Look, I don’t know how long you’ve been here or what made you hate it so much, but you should know that Silas is the best place for people like us. Out there we can’t even live without worrying about being exposed. Maybe you had rough start here, but I want you to know that it isn’t always so bad. Maybe you just haven’t met the right people.” Alex wasn’t exactly sure where her little pep talk and words of inspiration came from, but it felt right to say them and she hoped that she could get through to him.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? His attitude didn't impress or frighten Ryder in the least. In fact, all it served to do was make the girl incredibly curious. People called it a problem, that she was intrigued by the people who tried to put up a wall. In some way, they just presented a challenge and in others… Well, was it so wrong that Ryder wanted to help? She wasn't the most sympathetic, never had been and probably never would be, especially where other teenagers were concerned, but that didn't mean she was completely heartless… No matter what the people at her old school used to say about her.
The one thing that did trouble Ryder was that his thoughts were as nasty as the words he spoke out loud. It was like his entire life was shrouded in shadows and she'd never felt that impression from anyone before. "Well now, aren't you grown up." She eyed him with a sarcastic smirk on her lips, raising an eyebrow as he growled at them before whirling away. "Are you planning on only playing at prison break, or are you really going to do it?" If he wanted to leave a place as nice as Silas for the world that ate people like them up and spat them back out, then that was his mistake. But she wasn't going to let him leave without getting her two cents in. That's just the way she was.
She folded her arms across her chest, watching him walk away. Maybe though, it would be better for him to see what it was like away from Silas. Maybe then he'd actually respect the people here, the people trying to help. Or maybe he'd get himself killed. Dangit, she couldn't let that happen. Besides, despite his foul attitude towards her and her neighbor, who's name she vaguely recalled as Alex, there had to be something good about him. Ryder firmly believed there was good in everyone. Life wasn't black and white, and that meant people weren't all bad or all good. They were just people.
Alex made sense and Ryder looked over at her with a small smile. "I'd kind of like to see where he thinks he'd go. He seems to have the attitude that life out there will be better." Her smile faded and she shook her head. "He doesn't get it yet, but if he keeps this up… he's going to learn." The thought wasn't comforting. She barely got the words out before Alex was chasing after the kid and grabbing onto his wrist. Oh crap, this wasn't going to end well. The kid was too volatile to touch, but it seemed Alex was in mother mode and she wasn't going to care… This night just gets better and better. With a sigh, she hurried to catch up to Alex and the troubled teen.
She stood back just a ways, out of striking distance of the other teen, but close enough to step in. Ryder wanted to see the best in this kid, but right now all he was willing to show was his worst, and somehow, she had a bad feeling his worst could get violent. She could use her powers to stop him, that much she knew. But she didn't want to, it was painful and not exactly going to convince him it was safe to stay. Alex seemed pretty good at giving a pep talk, but Ryder doubted the effectiveness of that strategy. "Well, now that the pretty words have been said…" She grinned, tilting her head as she watched them. "Are you going to sit there and pout? Because apparently being dramatic is your thing. You say Silas is a prison? Well, when you go out there you'll figure out that there's a whole different kind of prison that they'll stick you in.You wanna go play prison break, then go. Go play. Break out of this prison and into a new one." Ryder couldn't help the words that spilled out. This kid was ticking her off and while she didn't like to be angry, she didn't mind being honest. Harsh she could handle, sympathetic she wasn't much good at. In fact, she pretty much sucked at it.

"I'm really going to do it, finally." As Lukan's feet hit the concrete yet again, he inwardly pleaded that neither of the two girls would follow. Hadn't he been harassed enough in his life? He was always the damaged kid, but here he felt more like the pathetic kid who was the cause for ninety percent of the school's blackouts. It was embarrassing, and for the faculty to think that they could help him better than he could help himself... made it all the more worse. Now these students were trying to help, just like the rest of them, but all he could think of was how weak he'd look if he ever gave in. Lukan was done with feeling weak. "I'm not stopping, so go. away." Of course they were following, it'd be too much to ask the universe for a little bit of luck regarding Luk.
His nonexistent luck seemed to be fading even faster as Alex grabbed hold of his wrist. The sixteen year old whirled around, and for once another emotion other than hatred showed on his face; shock. Hardly anyone ever dared to actually.. touch him. He was too formidable half the time, or if someone did touch him it was usually closer to a punch. Lukan's surprise caused a brief yet noticeable falter in his power control. Visible under a nearby streetlamp, Luk's shadow began to buzz with a sort of excitement, as if the shape knew now was a time to escape. Not only was someone holding Luk back from his getaway, but his power had a better chance of breaking free than he did. Luk's shock was short lived however, and another sheet of hate slipped over his face. He grit his teeth until the shadows stopped their jittery movements.
With his power somewhat controlled, Lukan focused back on Alex's words with his usual distrust. Her sympathy instantly made him want to run and hide. "I'm not like you, and I don't need your help either." He glanced toward one of the Silas buildings and crinkled his nose. "I also don't need their help." Luk quickly snarled and jerked his hand away from Alex's grasp. They acted like he thought the world was perfect, but he knew better. On both sides of the Silas walls was a hard life waiting for Luk, but if one gave him more freedom than that's the one he wanted. Why these students seemed so brainwashed was an enigma to the teen.
"Well, now that the pretty words have been said…" Lukan hissed and took a step backward. He wanted to sprint toward the exit before the second girl had a chance to speak, but he was not about to let either of them touch him again. The moody teen feared that another act of physical contact might unravel his control. Instead of taking that risk, Lukan begrudgingly stood and listened to Ryder's words. "First of all, I wasn't planning on sitting here. You're the ones keeping me from leaving!" A sudden light flickering in one of the dorm rooms momentarily quieted him, but soon the light had gone off and the coast was clear. For now. "You think I don't know both worlds are prisons?" He paused in his words and tilted his head upwards. The light hit a jagged scar under his jaw, one made by a kitchen knife held in his father's hand. Lukan quickly brought his chin down and bored his eyes into both girls. "I'm not stupid. But one prison just happens to be slightly nicer than the last, and that's the one I'm going to. But only if the both of you piss off!" He turned around and started to walk away again.
Another thought suddenly struck Lukan and he quickly whirled to face the girls. His gaze focused on Ryder. "You say that the world out there is worse, while here is some sort of sanctuary. Then what happens when you finally grow up, hmm? You just going to cling to the school forever? Well I'm not going to avoid the inevitable like all the other students here." Luk stared at her for another second, waiting to see if his information sank in. Maybe he wouldn't be the only one getting a lecture tonight.

Alex could feel her pulse rising as the boy whirled and looked at her in shock. Her body was telling her to let go, to keep her distance from the runaway. A sudden movement on the ground grabbed her attention and she watched as his shadow danced on the pavement autonomously. His words were but wind to her as she gaped at the shadow that had a life of its own. Chills crawled up her spine at the uncanny sight, and she only looked up from the ground when the shadow stopped moving, and when Alex saw the boy’s face again, she was suddenly afraid. Before she could let go, he’d already ripped his arm free of her grasp.
The healer unconsciously took a step back away from the boy as the other girl started talking again. Most of what she said just went through one ear and out the other, but Alex frowned at the latter part when the girl urged him to go ahead and leave. But then again, Alex’s approach was completely unsuccessful. Maybe he needed to hear the harsh words? That proved to not be the case as the boy continued to persist that Silas Academy was the worst place for him to be. When he showed the scar under his jaw, Alex felt a pang of guilt in her chest. It became obvious that this boy had experienced some horrible things in his life that she would never understand, and that somehow those events made him despise anything that felt like confinement. She was half tempted to ask about it, but it wasn’t in her nature to pry into something so private, something that made someone feel so vulnerable.
When the boy began to walk off again, Alex fought an internal battle where half of her wanted to keep following him, to convince him to stay, and the other half just wanted to let him go and be at peace. But he stopped, and that made Alex hopeful. She listened to him and remained as calm as ever as she answered. “What inevitable? Do you mean growing up and moving on? If so, you should realize that it’s inevitable in life no matter where you are.” Her voice was low and smooth without the slightest hint of sharpness to it. “Silas is the best place, particularly for you who loses control of his powers with just a touch. What do you think will happen if someone out there sees you slip up? They certainly are not going to tell you to “keep practicing” or help you work on gaining control. If you’re lucky, you’ll only be labeled as a freak and become the center of the world’s attention while exposing the rest of us. If luck isn’t on your side, you’ll find yourself in a prison far worse than any you could imagine.”
Alex sighed softly and was beginning to feel weary, the late hour of the night catching up to her. She wanted the boy to give it up already and to go back to his dorm and give Silas another chance. What would she do if he decided to keep at this nonsense? Alex already knew that answer and glanced at the dorm buildings where she knew there would be faculty on patrol. But wait, wouldn’t she also get herself in trouble for being out past curfew? The thought of tarnishing her clean record made Alex’s pulse rise again. This time when she spoke, her voice was as quiet as ever. “So what do you say? Will you please just go back to your dorm and give the school another chance? Forget about your first impressions and forget about yesterday. Tomorrow doesn’t have to be what you expect it to be.”

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? Ryder's frustration just kept growing as the kid ranted on and on. Okay, so the kid had had a tough life. But seriously, who at Silas hadn't? It was stupid to sit there and go through a pity party like you were all alone in life. "Alright, I get it. Chew me out, I'm fine with that, in fact, I'm quite used to it. But Alex here is really concerned for you. She's nice and sincerely cares, not a lot of people are like that. So if you could reserve the bad attitude for me and not insult her, that'd be great."
Okay, this was absolutely stupid. Ryder knew she had no chance of convincing this guy to change his mind. He wanted to leave and quite frankly, she couldn't blame him. Silas was an escape for Ryder, but she knew that for a lot of students it still felt like another prison. Better to deal with the real world. When he started to walk away again, Ryder sighed. Enough was enough, she'd already been in two arguments in one night. First her roommate and now this guy. Ryder hated arguing, she hated being serious and making people mad at her. She liked to think she didn't care what people thought, but there was always a part of her that was in pain when people disliked her so strongly.
Then he turned around and she stopped, tilting her head and considering what he said, seriously listening. She smiled and shook her head when he finished. "Silas is about learning control. About mastering what twist of fate gave you these abilities. It isn't about being a sanctuary, it's about learning to control yourself so that when you graduate, you can move on." She grinned and considered him thoughtfully. "I've never been the clingy type, so hanging around this school once I graduate isn't my plan. But you know what, when I leave, I'm going to know everything there is to know about my power. I'm going to be able to control myself even when I'm angry and more importantly I'm going to have friends who know who I really am, instead of ones I have to constantly lie to."
Shaking her head, Ryder took a step back. "Being alone isn't something anybody wants. So what's wrong with wanting to be with people who can understand what you're going through to some extent? Needing people isn't a weakness. I'm not avoiding, I'm preparing. But hey, if you really want to leave, then I'm done trying to stop you. I just hope you don't leave." Turning to Alex, Ryder smiled. "Sorry if me and my roommate were keeping you up, I know your dorm isn't too far from ours." Looking at the kid and Alex, Ryder gave a wave. "Good night."
