- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Garrett Andvari stood against the wall of the simulation room, one hand resting on the light controls as he peered up at the offending appliances that hung all across the ceiling. Why did the infernal things have to be so far away? Testing to see if they were still on during the tests was going to be much more difficult...Not impossible of course - nothing was impossible for Andi - but a pain that was going to require some creativity...
Eh, he'd figure it out later.
Having resolved to procrastinate a little, he turned and surveyed the huge, empty room. Big, mostly square, and mostly gray, the room was an empty canvas waiting for his skilled hand to shape it into an instrument of torture - er...learning...right...learning for the students sent his way. The Headmistress had, in all her benevolence, met Andi in his first few days back with a request (which, coming from that woman, meant more of an iron-clad order) for him to tutor a new student who was having a particularly difficult time with his power. The promise of a bonus had started to make the benefits of the deal sufficiently balance the hindrance of extra work. The deal had been sealed when Headmistress Palmer had pointed out that it was sort of his responsibility as a control teacher to help the kid. So he had grudgingly accepted the file with the first appointment date penned neatly on the front, and then had spent the next week and half not reading it. He knew the boy's name was Lukan something, and he controlled shadows - hence the bloody lights on the bloody ceiling being a problem - and nothing else. Hopefully there was nothing terribly important in there...
Shrugging off the thought - he'd burn that bridge if and when he got to it, too - Andi began to program the computer to bring in various items. Some of them where holograms - a man and a woman near the far wall who appeared to be talking to each other (only because the idea of them just staring at him gave Andi the willies), and a car in the corner opposite the door - but most were actual pieces of furniture that had been called into the room. There were a few chairs, a couch, a TV, a fridge, and half a dozen other assorted items. On a final burst of inspiration and curiosity, he called up a full-length mirror right in the center of the room.
"I am quite brilliant." If he did say so himself. Giving the room a final once-over, he threw himself onto the couch and draped an arm over his eyes to wait for Lukan's arrival. Or to get a nap. Some things just happen, right?

Lukan wandered through the hallways of Silas, trying to avoid the shadows that seemed to want to follow him like magnets. Sometimes if he even touched a person he would get stuck with their shadow all day if not longer. Every time, the scene from peter pan trying to sew his shadow back on came to mind, at least the bits he could remember. Disney movies weren't exactly all that common in his old household and he could only remember the clip he watched back in elementary school. Now fifteen, he was no longer in elementary school. But, there was no past innocence to long for, or any sort of extra cheeriness he felt back in his home town of Converse. He would be happier here, and he looked forward to it. At least he was looking forward to his new life, until he was assigned a tutor.
Only the second day at the academy and he was already stamped uncontrollable. Well, his powers were uncontrollable. Or maybe he was unteachable when put into the normal learning environment. Luk thought he was damn good at learning, even better at learning on his own. That's just what he originally planned to do; teach himself. Maybe it was because of his abusive background, or his young age, but for some reason the school faculty decided he was in dire need of extra help. This both angered and confused the young boy. His power was one of the least dangerous, though perhaps one of the most obnoxious when uncontrolled. He'd gotten used to the occasional classroom blackouts or drifting clouds of dark, but apparently his teachers were not so lenient. If he wasn't so stuck in his ways of self teaching, then maybe he could have seen that most of the professors were trying to help him, not make him unhappy on purpose. Though in Luk's mind, he was designed for the world to try to hurt him.
Playing cat and mouse with other people's shadows along the way, Lukan found the passage way bordered with simulation rooms. His lips mouthed the room numbers, and his chest tightened the closer he came to the assigned room. He so dearly wanted to go back to his dorm and finish unpacking, maybe attempt testing his ability without turning his room into a giant mass of black. The teen's heels scuffed the floor with each step as though trying to delay his trip. Something was still tugging him there, and if his shadows could be felt physically he would have surely put that as the number one suspect. While he had bad history with authority figures, there was still a very small portion of him telling him to obey. Perhaps it was left over fear from his father's reign, or he could have just felt the need to be a good kid. No matter the kind of force, it was still compelling him to walk into the room and he didn't like it.
The metal door swung open and clicked shut behind him, and he immediately began ogling the strange set of equipment programmed into the room. From a small town, the kid was lucky if he saw a flat screen television let alone anything as unworldly as this. Once he pried his eyes off the gleaming controls, he caught sight of the professor. Or at least he could only assume the man standing before him was school faculty. He couldn't see any sort of name tag on the guy, and refused to give away his name before he learned the man's. Lukan was extremely guarded, even in his usual greetings. Almost always the person in question would need to introduce themselves first before he could give out such information like his name. Such walls hadn't yet showed signs of lowering, even at the relatively safe school. For now, all Andi was going to get was a "Hello."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi wasn't sleeping when the door clicked shut. But he had been pretty darn close. Close enough that the metallic clang had him jerking upright and blinking a little blearily around. Nothing had been moved in the room, and there were no signs that anyone was, or had been, in the room. A clang...what did that mean? Oh, right, the door.
Andi swung his legs off the couch and eased his weight onto them, standing to greet the teenager lurking in the doorway. The kid, Andi assumed it was Lukan, was gaping around at the room with a look that resembled awe. That was fair enough - the room was one of those ridiculous pieces of work that had to blow the mind of everyone who walked through the door the first time. Alright, so far the kid had wracked up a remarkable point of 1 for normal, and 0 for weird. On too of that, he didn't look like someone whose power was unpredictable - they usually had a scared-rabbit sort of look - but there were always those odd ones out. Well...whatever, it had better be this kid, because he was getting bored of waiting.
Resting his weight back on his heels, he folded his arms and frowned slightly, waiting for the kid to finally notice him and offer an introduction. A moment later, the recognition came, but the introduction was sadly lacking. Wait, he blew out a small breath, he's probably nervous. He wouldn't start swinging, then. At least not literally...metaphorically, he was seriously considering letting the kid have it. "Good...morning, I think. Lukan Moore, right?" The last name had popped into his head at exactly the right moment. Somewhat relieved to have dodged that awkward bullet, Andi tried to keep his voice relaxed as he continued. "Have you got any idea why the Headmistress is making you come to this tutoring session?" He was curious what Lillian had told Lukan, and, besides, knew it would probably effect the lesson more than was fair. If he thought he was just being singled out as inferior, he was probably going to end up with a self-righteous stubborn streak. Andi didn't think he could take that without seriously hurting someone.

The small flicker of disapproval was hard to miss in the professor's expression, as short lived as it was. Lukan was used to such looks though. Pride was a rare thing for him to see, as he didn't have much to be proud of. The teen wasn't an award winning athlete, no academic scholar, and he couldn't even control his own powers. He was just the stubborn little kid who was lucky enough to have been placed in Silas, though he was still unsure of just how lucky he was.
Still clueless of his good fortune, Lukan's indifferent expression remained the same as Professor Garrett started with his own introduction, though it slowly changed to one of minor annoyance. "Good...morning, I think. Lukan Moore, right?" The politeness in his greeting was missed, as Lukan's mind was whirling from the idea of the professor already knowing his name. First and Last. People knowing his name normally wasn't a problem, as long as he knew said people's names. But, seeing as how Lukan had no clue what the professor's name was, or even if he was a professor, he was slightly unnerved. Privacy was so hard to keep nowadays, and that was what Lukan craved for so dearly. He wanted his history locked away, secrets blanketed, and his name safe under his own dispense. He wanted that control. It was unreasonable for anyone to ask for such power, but Lukan was going to try anyway.
Trying to push away any annoyance in his voice, which he was only mildly successful at doing, the teen finally answered the professors greeting. "Ugh yeah, Lukan. Who are you exactly?" He was blunt, just another part of his outspoken nature that he'd recently started showing. It was nice to know that he had a smaller chance of getting pushed around for just talking. "The headmistress sent me here," he paused, letting his backpack slide off his shoulders and hit the ground with a dull thud. "because she, or maybe the other professors, don't think I'm capable of learning control on my own." A subtle smile formed on his face, contrasting with the walls he hoped to put up. He wanted so badly to keep others away from him and out of his head, but unconsciously he'd make little friendly gestures without meaning to. "Maybe she's afraid of the dark."
The teen's smile wavered at his unplanned joke. He didn't want to be friends with this professor, nor did he want to really be around any authority figures. Bummer for Luk, but his mind liked to play games with him. The fifteen year old's thoughts were constantly arguing with each other, one side urging him to act standoffish while the other was encouraging his friendly personality that he struggled to keep walled up. Lukan was naturally friendly, outgoing, and even a little humorous. But, a harsh background made him hide his true personality, or at least attempt to do so. Right now his attempts were failing.
He tried to conform back to hiding behind walls, but cracks were already in place. Least some shadows decided to distract him right then and there. His backpack's shadow curled around his hand like a bracelet, or maybe like how a child clings to its parents' legs. Lukan was unsure whether to feel thankful or embarrassed for the distraction. He only knew that he didn't want the shadow lingering either way. With a few shakes of his wrist he managed to disperse the shadow in little black particles that sank back to the ground, reforming the backpack's shadow. Only now did Lukan's emotion decide on embarrassment. Here he was claiming he could learn control on his own, while little black masses clung to him like damn magnets. With a slight blush in his cheeks he muttered back to the professor. "I can do this on my own, you know." Luk was still in the stage of stubbornness where he wasn't even convincing himself, as he firmly believed he had what it took to be self reliant. Lone wolf might have been an appropriate term.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LEAVEMYDOOROPENJUSTACRACK ((T A K E M E A W A Y F R O M H E R E))!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi watched the look of discomfort that grew on the boy's face at hearing his name. How interesting. Was he going to take that out on the professor, though? That was the question. And the answer? Sort of. There was an obvious touch of irritation in the boy's voice as he confirmed his identity, and then added, "Who are you exactly?" Really? Hadn't the kid listening when he'd...Oh, right...he'd forgotten that part. "I'm professor Andvari. That's a bit of a mouthful, so you can call me Professor A if that suits you better."
His second question was answered much more promptly. Of course, Andi knew the Headmistress had sent Lukan - she had sent Andi as well - and he was hard-pressed to keep from scowling. Patience is a virtue. And...reward! "because she, or maybe the other professors, don't think I'm capable of learning control on my own." Oh, great, self-righteous stubborn streak, here we come! He loosed a long-suffering sigh and was opening his mouth to set that straight when the boy cracked a sudden, small smile and joke. His sigh had turned into a smile of his own and amused chuckle, maybe he could like this kid after all. Wait! No, he was not going to be distracted! "Now, wait a moment. You seem to have things just a titchy bit off. You might figure things out on your own, if you really applied yourself, but in all honesty, it's fairly unlikely. Just swinging in the dark-" Ha, puns. "...as it were - is dangerous." The scare tactic always worked, right? He thought he'd just test that theory... "Potentially fatal."
As if to contradict the boy's words and underline Andi's, a dark band appeared suddenly on Lukan's wrist. Unplanned, judging from the frantic shaking that was trying to dislodge it. Andi only let one eyebrow climb up toward his hairline, waiting until the shadow had finally fallen back to the ground before he looked at Lukan's face. He looked embarrassed. That was good, it meant he probably knew how uncontrolled he was. Or...well, maybe not. "I can do this on my own, you know.".
Andi shook his head, and then scrubbed a hand through his cloud of curls. This might not be so easy after all. Struck by a sudden thought, Andi paced a step closer, making sure he had Lukan's attention as he spoke."Your file says your Umbrakenetic - a shadow manipulator. Scary-sounding, at best, but, alright, probably not very dangerous." He had changed position, shifting his hands to his waist and keeping a stern look on his face. "Unless you look at it from a new direction. Let's say it's ten years from now; you're married to a lovely woman. You and she are flying across the country to visit your in-laws, and you're halfway there - very high up in the air. Now let's say you two start arguing. Emotions get worked up. In your upset state, you black the plane out." He hoped scare tactics worked, because he might be laying it on a little thick. "With the plane blacked out, the pilot can't see to keep it in the air, and it crashes. Everyone dies."
He didn't move for a moment, making sure his message sank in. He didn't like coming up with the worst situation he could think of, but he figured it was probably more effective. And now that he had that out of the way...Andi spun on his heel and walked away from Lukan, motioning into the room as he did. "We're going to test exactly what you can do - find out where your control stops. We'll start big and work down." He stopped a dozen feet away and turned back to face Lukan once more, "When I give the word, I want you to darken the whole room for the count of ten - your count. At ten, bring the lights back, but just on this side of the room. Up to...ah..." He cast around before pointing at a potted plant about halfway down the wall to his right. "There. Ready...one...two...three, go."

Lukan wrinkled his nose a little as the professor properly introduced himself. Not that he wasn't glad to have some sort of information on the guy in front of him, but the name was indeed quite the mouthful. The teen tried mouthing Andi's full name and frowned before agreeing to the shorter version with a nod of his head. Professor A. would have to do. Now that awkward introductions were over with, Lukan was subjected to the lengthy start to their lecture. "Now, wait a moment. You seem to have things just a titchy bit off." He emitted a small snort but fought down a laugh. A titchy? What the hell is a titchy? If Lukan had been exposed to more British people, then perhaps he'd be focusing more on the purpose behind the professor's speech, and not snickering at a simple word. The pun didn't help him focus either. Boy humor was so simple at times.
"Potentially fatal." The smile faltered on his face. At the moment, the professor's scare tactic was working. To Lukan, the thought of killing someone or himself, with his own power was a bit frightening. The professor had his attention now. "Your file says your Umbrakenetic - a shadow manipulator. Scary-sounding, at best, but, alright, probably not very dangerous." Yet again, Lukan was busy paying attention to simple words out of the whole spiel. But, there was no amusement this time. He had a file. His face paled a little and he considered running out of the room right then and there. Lukan knew it was likely that Silas had some sort of information on him, but it irked him nonetheless, even more that more than one person had access to said file. He flicked the hair out of his eyes, as though that was enough for the professor to not notice his drastic skin change from blush to pale.
He cleared his throat a little, yet stuck to a murmur. "Ugh yeah, Umbrakenetic, sure..." Lukan was grateful for the interruption as the professor started to speak again. At least he was grateful, until the conversation changed into the life or death aspect. What was it with these professors terrifying him!? Usually he'd scoff or roll his eyes at authority. He was definitely suffering from the "new kid disease." In which case, he felt like his self confidence was dwindling and his outspoken nature was being put on hold. It took a long moment before he gathered his voice back up, while it would have been instantaneous given different circumstances. "I ... I don't think that's very likely." His voice came on a bit stronger once he started talking, and he was allowed to hold onto his outspoken side for the moment. "I mean, I could just not go on a plane or something. And I'll have figured how to control my powers by then anyway." Now falsely reassured again, Lukan regained some of his confidence and stood there looking at Andi, face no longer colorless.
"We're going to test exactly what you can do - find out where your control stops. We'll start big and work down." Lukan raised an eyebrow. Yeah, that made sense. Luk knew how to take a hint, more than likely this guy wanted to embarrass him further before attempting to teach him control. He quickly rolled his eyes. Just get through it Lukan. Don't say something stupid. "When I give the word, I want you to darken the whole room for the count of ten - your count. At ten, bring the lights back, but just on this side of the room. Up to...ah... there. Ready...one...two...three, go." The task seemed simple enough, or at least that was what he was telling himself. True or not he was going to try.
With a long exhale he let loose. The various shadows of the room jutted upwards, sliding up to the ceiling and covering the walls with black. Luk merely glanced around, there was no tensing of muscles or veins popping out from foreheads. It was so easy to let go and allow the insistent shadows to do as they pleased. Quietly, he watched the shadows become 3D as the shot out from the walls. Then there was nothing left to watch. The room was in full blackout mode, so Lukan was left to count. Each second went by quickly, though it was nerve racking to know that the next step was not going to be so easily to follow. Ten seconds was up. Okay, you got this bro. You. Got. This. He lifted both hands, squinted at the darkness and willed the mass to pull back closer towards him.
Nothing. Lukan narrowed his eyes at the lack of compliance. The one time he urged the shadows to be clingy, and they wouldn't listen. Another ten seconds went by, and still nothing. "Shit..." He couldn't care less if Professor A. thought badly of his language, and he was frustrated to say the least. The shadows seemed to have it out for him sometimes. His muscles tensed and with a sharp hiss he yanked his arms back, urging the shadows to follow. For a short amount of time they did, shrinking back just past the potted plant. Though before Lukan could grin at the accomplishment, the shadows dispersed, smacking back against the walls and dripping into their original shapes. The room was light again, and Luk was left rubbing the bridge of his nose in both frustration, and a bit of humiliation. "I'm working on it." Least that stubborn attitude of his refused to leave.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi was thrilled to see that it at least looked like his scare tactic was working on Lukan. Not that he wanted the kid to be terrified - he wasn't quite that bad. It was just that the kid would learn something this way. After a fashion, anyway. And that's what this was all about right? The kid learning something and growing as a mutant...that sentence always made him picture the person suddenly sprouting an extra head. And then...yep. He was distracted. It took an effort to pull his focus back to the matter at hand, and he blinked just as Lukan's face began changing colors. Was the kid secretly a lizard? That couldn't be normal for a human...Ah, there, now it was back to normal. He was human-colored now. Human colored, and still stubbornly clinging to his...what had been the term? ...Personal myth, that was it. Andi couldn't help but wonder exactly how much the kid actually believed he had control, and how much was a front.
Well, there was one solution to that. Okay, so there were probably many, and most of them were probably better, but he liked his. Preparing the big, sharp needle of reality, he made himself ready to puncture that bubble. "If not a plane, then a car. A motorcycle, bus...whatever the transportation, you could still cause a crash that might kill someone." He added a shrug, "And what are you going to do if you can't get control without help? What if there's only so far you can get through effort and dumb luck?"
He would never admit it out loud, of course, but Andi was a little impressed when the entire room went promptly black at the end of his count. Maybe he hadn't been completely right about the extent of Lukan's control problems...
Ha! Who was he kidding; Him, wrong?
The darkness remained steadily in place for Andi's count of ten. And then for his count of twenty. Andi was a firm believer in the value of experience, and as such, he couldn't help but smile a little self-satisfied when the count started creeping toward thirty. He had known he was right. Clearing his throat - and resisting the urge to start trying to play pranks - Andi called into the stifling darkness, "I'm going to need to be able to see you, Mr. Moore, if we're going to continue this lesson." Never mind the fact that this total darkness was beginning to make him feel like he was underground, and that meant things were going to get ugly if it didn't clear up soon.
He heard Lukan cuss, but it was only a vague realization. Why had he thought about being underground? It was making his hands shake, and his slid them discretely into his pockets. He thought it would probably be awkward if he was caught with shaking hands after that speech. Almost immediately after he had hidden his hands, the shadows pulled back, and he blinked at the sudden return of light. Oh, good. He opened his mouth to tell Lukan to light the rest of the room, and the shadows had suddenly returned to their rightful places. The command turned instead to a thin frown at the boy's latest insistence. Instead of metaphorically ripping the kid's head off at this stupid attitude, Andi grudgingly nodded. "I see that. You actually did better than I expected."
He wasn't totally heartless - he could give credit where credit was due. Sighing, he turned away and surveyed the room again, forcing his hands to go still in his pockets. He could use a cigarette right now. Or a beer. But he had to get through the session first. Had to find something for the kid to do... "Alright, we're going to go a little smaller now..." He had a sudden idea and spun back yet again, motioning between Lukan and himself with the enthusiasm of having just had a brilliant idea. "Swap our shadows. That seems uncomplicated enough. And I don't care what the shadows do - make 'em dance, keep them still...as you like."

Post by Lukan Moore on Feb 9, 2012 1:12:22 GMT -5
Andi seemed to have a knack at not sugar coating things. Lukan would have normally appreciated such bluntness, but the stubborn teen thought he was already living reality and there was no need for any intervention. According to Luk, it was the teachers that needed to retouch with reality. He was in control after all. Learning at the least. "If not a plane, then a car. A motorcycle, bus...whatever the transportation, you could still cause a crash that might kill someone." Apparently the professor thought otherwise, which was to be expected. He hadn't shown much sign of believing the boy so far. "And what are you going to do if you can't get control without help? What if there's only so far you can get through effort and dumb luck?" Luk frowned, not like he was really smiling during any of this. His mouth opened and closed. Lukan wanted so much to roll his eyes and scoff, shoo away any complications in his life like so many other teens managed to do on a daily basis. It was his generation that seemed to invent the phrase, carpe diem; seize the day. Why wasn't he like these other teens?
He was too walled up, serious, and innocence lacking to live life without a care. Luk's true self had been stripped down and locked up to the point of being unrecognizable. It was only natural he try so hard to cling to what he had left. Unfortunately, what was left, at least what could be seen, was a stubborn boy determined to live as independent as possible. Convinced he had no remnants of his former self left, he clung to this new twisted personality and begged it never leave him. But Luk's inner self was still very much there, though slightly masked, as it was the sensible side of him keeping the teen listening to the professor. Most shockingly, he was considering the professor's words. However his brain refused to connect with his mouth. Mind still busy pondering the harsh truth given by Andi, Lukan's mouth had already uttered the phrase so well known to him. "I'm working on it."
The following lesson did well to deter the student from speaking that phrase again, at least today. Lukan could feel embarrassment prick his skin further as the darkness refused to budge. The room became silent and unnerving. At least it was, until Andi spoke. "I'm going to need to be able to see you, Mr. Moore, if we're going to continue this lesson." Lukan could clearly imagine the taunting smile behind the professor's words. Andi was winning, whatever the competition was, and it both humiliated the boy and intrigued him. The professor was right, so shouldn't that make him worth listening too? Light filled the room, cutting the most reasonable answer off and feeding his stubbornness further. See? Did it, light's back and shadows are gone. I don't need help. He refused to take into consideration the requested time slot said test was to be completed in. Lukan still very much needed help.
Now self-assured again, Andi's slight compliment further increased the boy's confidence. At least it could be taken as a compliment. The vagueness in Andi's words really went either way. The meaning of said words all depended on how well the professor expected him to do originally, though Luk couldn't bring himself to ask. He was not about to go fishing for compliments. Get in and get out. Wasn't that the plan? Apparently not anymore, seeing as how Luk was listening; from analyzing the professor's supposedly kind words to even second guessing his own opinions, Luk was hooked whether he wanted the advice or not. "Alright, we're going to go a little smaller now..." The professor's face seemed to suddenly flash with inspiration, both capturing Luk's attention and sending nervous energy through his body. "Swap our shadows. That seems uncomplicated enough. And I don't care what the shadows do - make 'em dance, keep them still...as you like."
Swap the shadows... that Lukan could do, maybe. At least the shadows seemed to do it unintentionally and on a daily basis. Sometimes by simply shaking hands he'd find himself stuck with two shadows for the rest of the day. Shadows clung to him constantly, but shaking them off was a feat all its own. Luk would try though. Crouching slower to the ground he held out a hand, no different like one would do when coaxing a puppy with a treat. Lukan was in a way, the treat itself. Eager to reach its prize, the shadow shot forward in the teen's direction and proceeded to playfully wind around the boy's shoelaces. Luk had to press the shadow onto the ground, flattening it back down against the surface before he could focus on dismissing his own shadow.
Still crouched, Luk allowed his hand to hover over his own shadow. The dark mass seemed to vibrate with excitement as it was acknowledged by its young master. He kept the pressure firm though, pushing the shadow hard into the ground to keep it from leaping up onto him like a puppy. A short breath escaped his mouth and he slide his hand across the floor with a sharp motion. The shadow slid. Lukan watched the force waver the farther it got from him, and his brow furrowed in concentration as he willed the shadow to keep moving. Don't stop now... Lucky for the boy, his silent pleas seemed to work as the shadow finally reached Andi and fixed itself by the professor's feet. Luk knew well enough to slowly ease off the pressure, for releasing it all at once would send the shadows rocketing around him like fireworks. Bit by bit he did so. Though he cringed with apprehension through most of the process, the shadows held. "Hehe, I got it." Luk kept his voice airy, but the relief was most obvious. The tug of war between stubborn pride and reason was back at a stand still.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As soon as the compliment of Lukan's apparent ability was out, Andi could see it bolstering the kid's confidence, and he wondered if it had been a bad idea. Particularly if the teenager refused to acknowledge that Andi's expectations hadn't been all that high in the first place. (So the students could always surprise him, he had told the Headmistress when she asked.) It was too late, however, and Andi had meant it, so he simple breathed a small sigh and turned away.
When he turned back with his new plan, he caught a glimpse of thought written out on Lukan's face. And then a sudden flash of nervousness took it's place, and Andi made sure keep a close eye on him as he proposed his plan. The nervousness seemed to leave, and Andi watched with growing interest as Lukan bent and stuck out a hand. Almost immediately, Andi's shadow fled him and began to play with the younger boy's shoes. He didn't have a shadow anymore. What a...disconcerting turn of events. Best not to look, he thought, shifting his attention once more to Lukan's work. He had his hand held out once more, and Andi watched the shadow shudder and wiggle before shooting suddenly toward him at Lukan's urging.
"That's...not weird at all," Andi muttered, resisting the urge to step away from the shadow as it settled at the base of his feet. He was going to continue talking, but he caught sight of the pained look on Lukan's face and paused, sure that it meant that the shadow-swapping wasn't finished. Several more seconds passed before Lukan spoke, and then Andi let one eyebrow crawl toward his hairline. "Yes, I see that. This time you were much more successful..." Andi swung an arm and the shadow attached to Lukan's feet copied, eliciting a small noise from the control teacher. "I have to say this is one of the strangest things I've seen." He continued moving his arms and glancing between his shadow and Lukan's. "Bizarre."
After a moment of this, Andi tore his attention away and frowned thoughtfully at Lukan. "Your control appears to be much better when dealing with smaller shadows. Not perfect, but...reasonable, I suppose." He paused, wondering what damaging effect that might have on Lukan's opinion of himself, and then continued curiously, "I wonder, however, what exactly you can do with the little shadows. Can you move just certain pieces?" Andi moved forward as he spoke, Lukan's black silhouette sliding across the floor with him. "Or could you hold a piece of shadow in your hand?" He was in analytic mode now and didn't wait to let Lukan answer before another question occured to him, "And do you feel the shadows? Are they solid? Or, well...touchable." He caught himself before he got to really babbling, and looked over at Lukan, realizing for the first time that he had closed the distance between them.

Once more Lukan beamed at the compliment, though it may not have been entirely intended to lift the boy's spirits. He had done better, but only because the professor's request was an easier one to fulfill, and even then he had struggled. Though in order to clutch his strong opinions he needed to take every bit of encouragement he came across to keep his stubborness. See? I know what I'm doing, even the professor said so.. sorta. Filled with undeserved reassurance, Lukan even emitted a lighthearted laugh as the teacher observed his new, yet temporary, shadow. He shouldn't have let this teacher boost his ego so much, for it was at times like these that the teen's carefully built walls began to crumble. A warning was going off in his mind, telling him to stay away, run, rebuild those walls. But, the small smile on his lips had already started to muffle that warning.
Lukan continued to watch the professor inspect the mismatched shadows with near childlike fascination. Meanwhile Luk's confidence continued to build. He'd done something right, and better yet he'd impressed someone. Despite the lack of parental care Lukan received, he still very much liked to feel accepted amongst those older than himself. The feeling of acceptance barely compensated for the teen never having received a pat on the back from a parent, or a quick nod of approval. Professor Andvari was not his father, nor was anyone else in this school even related to him, but still Lukan couldn't help but expect to hear more encouragement; something that was rare yet sweet.
Before Lukan could comment on the so-called bizarreness of his power, the professor had launched into a discussion that seemed to be with himself. The fifteen year old could only watch, head tilted, as Andi expressed more analytic fascination. "Your control appears to be much better when dealing with smaller shadows. Not perfect, but...reasonable, I suppose." Just as Andi may have been worried about, Lukan's assurance did indeed increase. He smiled then glanced away at the embarrassing feeling; a weak attempt to rebuild a wall. "I wonder, however, what exactly you can do with the little shadows. Can you move just certain pieces?" Lukan's lips parted and he began to speak, "Well som-" but the professor quickly cut him off, and Lukan resolved to stay quiet for most of his questions.
Halfway through the professor's speech, Lukan's mind began to wander away from his words and focused on his movements instead. He was coming closer, too close maybe? No... Lukan's jaw set slightly, and while his confidence was still sparking underneath his skin, a look of determination washed over his face in place of a smile. It was as though in a slight instant a desire for dominance had burst in him. He felt like this nearly every time he first met someone, and Lukan gave into this feeling by keeping eyes locked, and face firm. He was making up for lost time spent sheepishly casting his eyes downward at his father's sharp insults. Why this instinct had not come over him earlier in his meeting with Andi was unknown to Lukan, but the decreasing amount of space between the two probably played a part in it. His chin lifted ever so slightly to keep his eyes locked on the professor, who was at least four inches taller than him. He wasn't backing down, even if there was nothing to fight.
Lukan then spoke again, though his voice was tentative compared to his more defiant stature. "I don't know.." How could he know the answer to any of Andi's questions? He was just too scared to try really any of what the professor had mentioned. But now with a boosted ego, Luk felt like he could attempt them. Before he tried to do so, Lukan realized he knew the answer to just one of the questions. "I mean, I only know that they don't feel solid. It's like..." He faltered, searching for words, "they're just like annoying black shapes that follow me. They being the shadows." He cast a quick glare down at the distorted black clinging to their feet, but the teen soon brought his eyes back up again. He'd broken some undeclared staring contest between himself and the professor, and Lukan mentally cursed himself for doing so.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The latest experiment's success seemed to have put Lukan in an extremely good mood, and Andi saw him smiling as the teacher played with the shadows. It was good to see that the kid had at least relaxed since arriving, even if that hadn't exactly been Andi's original intention. He wondered as he watched his shadow at Lukan’s feet what had made Lukan so…what was the word he wanted? …irritating? No, while that might have been true – the kid’s plucky self-confidence would have driven the control teacher to drink, were he not already in that habit – it still wasn’t quite right. He frowned thoughtfully at the shape while his brain whizzed through various words…guarded, that was it. What made the kid think he had to have seventeen layers of shields between him and the world? Not that Andi expected his students to all look to him as some sort of father-figure – anything but that. …Perhaps he was reading too much into it, but he was sure Lukan was more standoffish than was normal for new students. He supposed he’d just have to wait and see…Andi hated waiting.
He was sure he heard Lukan say something somewhere in the middle of the teacher’s musing, but he was already on a roll, and he didn’t pause to do anything but glance quickly at the kid. He saw Lukan’s smile and then subsequent glance away – another strange occurrence. He wasn’t going to smile at a compliment? Something else to watch out for, how excellent. Rather than pursue it, Andi let his questions run their course until he had gotten to the end, and was ready to hear Lukan’s answer. He would wait and watch for the hidden smile thing.
What he got in answer to his questions was a slightly nervous-sounding “I don’t know…” that finally drew Andi’s attention back to where it was supposed to be. The teenage student was still standing in the same spot, but his expression had hardened and his chin had lifted defiantly. Well…that was odd. He had thought Lukan was warming up to him a little, but he had switched suddenly back to square one – if not even worse. Curious, Andi folded his arms across his chest and shifted his weight back as Lukan continued answering. He wasn’t completely listening though, focusing instead on Lukan’s stance and face. Where was all that nauseating self-assurance and pride? Because between that and defiance, Andi thought he preferred the former. Pride he could use, defiance he would have to fight head-on. And was he just not going to blink ever again? Oh, wait, there it was. Lukan’s attention dropped suddenly to the ground with a comment about the shadows, and then snapped almost right away back to Andi’s slightly-smiling face. ”So they’re shadow puppies?” He didn’t know if Lukan was in the mood for jokes, but that had never stopped him making them before. Though…though on second thought, this defensiveness might actually drive him to do just that. ”Mr. Moore, I want to make very sure we are on the same page before I go any further.” He paused to order his thoughts before continuing, “I do not think you are anywhere near as controlled as you think you are. Granted, you are better than I first expected, but then I was preparing myself for you to come in here and start blowing things up, so I’m not if that will mean anything to you.” Andi wasn’t sure it would have to him, to be honest. “Having seen what little I have here, I think you have the potential to be really good someday. You can do quite a bit, and I even think some of it’s on purpose, but what you do is too…” He paused again and cast around for the right word. He wasn’t just trying to make Lukan feel bad, and so he had to think out what he was saying with some care, “unrefined. I’ve already told you that can be dangerous.” That would do, and that should be the worst of it. “But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have some pride when things work out right. Work hard, get better, and have a good time at it. I’m not going to hit you for smiling when you prove me wrong.” As much as he hated it. “I am trying to help you.”
This was just nauseating, and he wasn’t going to stay in soap opera mode any longer than was absolutely necessary. Clearing his throat, he spread his hands and backed a few feet away from Lukan. “If you’re ready to try something else, I’d like to see you manipulate a smaller piece of shadow. Something the size of a hand, I think… Try and shape it into something. A square or a circle…one and then the other, if you want.” He remained focused on Lukan as he spoke, still trying to gauge his reaction.

Lukan's expression hardly faltered when the teacher refused to move backwards, but on the inside a slight state of panic had settled in. Andi was too close. The boy's defiant act usually kept others at least a few feet away, and he hadn't been intentionally touched for almost a month now. Having anyone standing so close was setting off some sort of alarm in his head. He'd have ran out of the room entirely if he was not worried about losing some imaginary dominance battle. Instead, he kept his face hard as he tried to regain control of the shadow buzzing excitedly by his feet. His nerves were going to make him lose control of everything and then he'd look like a fool, least that's what Lukan thought. Sacrificing dominance for regaining most of his pride, the teen took two steps back from the professor to regain some of his personal space.
Luk's previous panic slowly lowered as his nerves settled. Even the shadows eventually ceased their buzzing, but there was no doubt that the boy's control was still teetering on the edge. For that reason, Lukan kept his face strong, defiant against both Andi and his own power. "Yeah sure, shadow puppies... but puppies wouldn't be as big of a pain." Wait, was he admitting that his power was hard to control? The teen's eyes widened as he blurted out an attempt to erase his mistake. "I mean they're not that much of an annoyance I guess..." He shifted on his feet, deeply regretting his little blunder. Luk had only met the professor once and already he was having trouble keeping track of his mistakes and holding his walls up. So frustrating.
The sixteen year old slowly forgot about his blunder as Andi let his voice grow more serious. Within the first few sentences he was scoffing and rolling his eyes, more defense from his stubborn side. "That's ridic-" His words were cut off as Andi.. gave him a compliment? Lukan strung up a bunch of curses in his head as Andi caught him off guard. Compliment or not, he was a little upset that he hadn't been able to predict hardly any of Andi's actions. There were just too many things he didn't have control over. "Fine, I look forward to smiling when I prove you wrong." His tone was still plenty defensive, one that rang out how badly Lukan didn't want to befriend anyone, Andi included. Or at least it told how much he wanted to distance himself from others and keep himself safe. "But I still don't need all your stupid help... I'll only stay because the headmistress is making me." Luk refused to admit that he may have stayed even if he was not under orders. Perhaps part of Andi's lesson was slowly getting to him.
As Andi continued to talk, the defensive boy's eyes drifted back over their shadows. Maybe he should return them to their rightful owners by now. Even Lukan had to admit that having mismatched shadows was freaking him out, no matter how often things like this happened to him. "One second.." He raised a hand and instantly his own shadow jumped back to his feet like a child neglected of its parent for too long. It was giving Andi his shadow back that would be the hard part. His brow furrowed in concentration as he struggled to slide the shadow across the floor. After a long minute he had successfully reconnected the professor with his shadow, but not without a little straining. He wiped a hand across his forehead before speaking. "Okay, I'll try the shape thing or whatever."
Lukan now focused on taking a small part of his own shadow to use for the shape making task. He took Andi's orders literally and detached the actual hand from his shadow, something that even made Luk raise an eyebrow. Nothing stranger than seeing your hand taken away. Nonetheless, Luk soon worked toward his assignment by moving his hands in a circular motion and trying to blur the shadow into one shape. It wasn't working though. As he tried harder and harder to confine the black mass into a circle, the shadow seemed to actually grow and fight against his control. Suddenly the shape expanded around the whole room; exploded really. Once more they were standing in the dark. "Son of a gun!" Lukan snarled something under his breath about shadow manipulating being a useless and pain in the ass power. Though he was previously starting to accept Andi's help, now he just wanted to give up.
