First days at a new school sucked. Cayden was quickly discovering that second days weren't much better. He'd been born and raised in his home town, and the biggest change he'd made previously was from middle school into high school. This was very different, not to mention a few states away from home. More than that, this place was filled with weird people who could do weird things. It was an adjustment that he was working on. Back home, he hid what he could do, not because he was ashamed of it, but because he was afraid of becoming some weird science experiment. Here at Silas Academy, he didn't have to hide. There were people levitating, actually levitating down the halls. It made him feel at home in a way he hadn't felt since his mom was alive. She would have understood. Dad was... well he was Dad. The point was this was a place where he could relax, be himself, and maybe learn a thing or two about himself and what he was capable of.
His classes didn't start until Monday, so he was spending the weekend wandering around, getting to know the area and the people in it. He'd been apprehensive at first, but he adjusted quickly. Whether it was his personality or a weird quirk of his power, he didn't know. Not that it mattered. Cayden could fit in to almost any crowd and still feel at ease. Today was a little different, though. He'd gotten settled into his dorm, picked out his class schedule, and wandered around outside where he could get some fresh air. This day, he was scoping out the inside of the Academy. Oh, and he was also in the form of a black jaguar. He'd left his things in his room, shifted before he could change his mind, and left to snoop around the halls and rooms. Part of him was still skittish of being in animal form around people, especially inside where there'd be no mistaking him for a wild animal, but the other part of him really liked seeing how many people he could freak out. Sadly, most of the students and staff weren't even giving him a second look. It was weird and unsettling. Almost as much as being a giant cat in the hallways was on its own.
Cayden padded to the end of a hallway and looked both directions. To his left was another hallway that looked just as boring as the ones before, and to his right was a staircase. His tail flicked momentarily in indecision, then he turned and went downstairs. He'd go down, and work his way back up. Apparently, besides the great hall, kitchen, and library, there wasn't much to investigate on the ground floor. His powerful feline eyes watched for other people, some part of him still afraid of being carted off to a lab somewhere, but nobody seemed to be around. He shrugged mentally. It was the weekend and from what he understood, most everyone would be in Willowbrook. It didn't bother him. It made this first foray as an animal easier on his state of mind.
Once he got to the bottom of the stairs, he stopped. Wow. Okay, perhaps this place wasn't so bad after all. Cayden had found himself in a giant game room, and he was certain it was giant. Supported by poles, the entire room was open and there were TVs, pool tables, arcade games, cushioned chairs, couches, tables, and all manner of things to distract him. He told himself that he'd be spending a lot of time here. Without further ado, he bounded into the room and jumped up on the pool table. Whoever was here last hadn't finished their game, and he amused himself for a few moments by batting the balls into the pockets. Once done with that menial task, he stretched out, his back arching and his tail in the air, before flopping down in a sleek, black heap on the felt-covered slate. It wasn't the softest surface in here, but the largest couch in the room would be a bit of a squeeze for him in this form, and he was determined to be himself today. For him, that meant more forms than one.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? All the Silas students had disappeared from the hallways in less then two hours. They had bigger and better things to do, Ryder could only assume what they were. She had no such prior engagements, leaving her the time to wander Silas without anyone asking her what she was doing. People were always so concerned when they found a student walking aimlessly, it wasn't like she had any plans up her sleeve. The administration was not likely to believe that though. She took a turn down another narrow hallway but doubled back when she felt the thoughts of a teacher, one that didn't like her very much. No good going that way. Ryder sighed, who knew such an extraordinary school could be so boring.
A student passed her with thoughts so empty that Ryder scarcely felt their presence. Not really interested enough to start a conversation, she hurried on through the school, turning at random points whenever she felt the mood strike her. She'd been here a semester, but still relied on other peoples thoughts to find her way around the school. It was just so dang big. Putting her back against the wall, she let herself slid down till she was seated on the floor. Concentrate. Her eyes slid shut and she felt the overwhelming number of thoughts creep closer. She held the majority of them at bay, but searched and sifted through the nearest ones. She just need to find something to occupy her time with, someone to talk to or hang out with. Someone entertaining, more so than some of the students she'd spoke with so far this semester.
Jaguar. Her mind latched onto the word. Several students had seen a jaguar wandering through the halls. Perfect. Her eyes popped open and she grinned, pushing herself to her feet and walking with more of a purpose. Besides, the game room was a good idea even if someone so interesting wasn't there. Ryder had always liked a good, competitive game of pool, or even a round on a classic arcade game, she wasn't too picky. She practically skipped towards the game room, humming under her breath and bobbing her head to the nonexistent beat. Since she'd actually had some sort of map, it didn't surprise Ryder that in just a couple minutes, she was standing in the room, looking over it appreciatively. She could feel the feline, the familiar brush of a Silas student's mind, though it felt slightly foreign, a cat's mind thrown into the mix.
With a grin, she picked up a pool stick and tapped it on the table's edge, where the Jaguar was currently relaxing. "Such a waste of a perfectly good pool table." She stood close to him, close enough that if he was trying to reach her, he could. He wasn't hostile though, she could tell that much from his mind, that and she was sure that it was a he she was speaking to. Without concern for how he would react, she stepped closer and hopped up onto the table, so that she was perched on its edge. "But hey, I suppose no one else is here to complain. I would, but frankly, it's so much more fun just waiting to see what you'll do next." She cast him a sidelong glance, 'Though if you ruin the table, I swear I won't be taking the blame. You'll have to take the heat for that, Kitty Cat.' She spoke the last part into his mind, switching from spoken words to using her power without scarcely realizing it. Telepathy was such an ingrained part of her that sometimes she wasn't even aware she was using it.

Cayden eyed the PS3 console across the room, wondering if he could manage it without thumbs. Small tasks he could do, but playing video games wasn't a task on that list. Nor did he think the Headmistress would be too happy about claw marks on the controller. Idly, he wondered how rich she was to run a school where people had to destroy things on a regular basis. It wasn't like everyone who came here automatically knew how to control their powers, and he knew some of the students were pretty voliatle. It made him cringe to think of what the place looked like when one of those kinds of students lost it.
While Cayden was making a pathetic attempt to run numbers in his head, a girl practically bounced into the room, bobbing her head like she was listening to some music only she could hear. His first instinct was to hide somewhere or something, as unaccustomed as he was to people seeing him in animal form, but he forced himself to remain where he was. The very tip of his tail curled and uncurled as he watched her in curiosity. It was a feline instinct that was hard to repress when he was shifted. Not that he tried. He couldn't even stop the hiss that rose in his throat when she tapped the table with the cue stick. "Such a waste of a perfectly good pool table." Well, he thought it was a pretty good use for it even if a couch might have been a squishier choice. He sighed deeply when he realised that he could have just curled up in a ball on it. Oh, well. Nothing he could do about it now. He'd claimed the pool table as his for the time being.
Cayden forced himself to stay still as she hopped up on the table. Apparently, Silas Academy really was different, and he had to keep reminding himself that he didn't have to hide anymore. His walk around the ground floor had proven to him that people weren't really concerned with the weird or abnormal, but it was still unsettling to have someone sit so close and not bat an eyelash. By his reckoning, she should be running and screaming for animal control to come send his ass to the zoo. "But hey, I suppose no one else is here to complain. I would, but frankly, it's so much more fun just waiting to see what you'll do next." Was he supposed to do tricks now? This was about as entertaining as he was going to get at the moment. So that wasn't entirely true. He'd only freak her out if he got bored, though. 'Though if you ruin the table, I swear I won't be taking the blame. You'll have to take the heat for that, Kitty Cat.' Cayden blinked. That was in his head. She was talking to him in his head. Telepath!
Cayden finally stood up, then, claws just barely brushing the felt when he stretched. So, she could read his mind, huh? That made things a little easier, and strangely, he didn't mind it. He'd never tried communicating with anyone in this form and being able to talk to someone was pretty refreshing. Wait, did that mean she knew what he was thinking right now? His nose wrinkled slightly, not knowing the limitations of her ability. So, Mind Reader... Might as well continue the developing tradition of nick names. What makes you think I'm going to destroy this lovely resting place, hmm? I was purposely careful while getting all the balls out of the way, and if I scratched it up now, it would be defeating the purpose. Not to mention that I actually like playing pool on occasion and I'd hate for the Mrs. Palmer to rip me a new one over destroying property in my first week. He should really shut up. For someone like himself who thought too much anyway, her being in his head had to be a little uncomfortable for her. He sat back on his haunches, tail curled around himself, as he tried to make his inner voice shut the hell up.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? She rose an eyebrow, completely calm, even as he hissed at her. The thoughts running through his mind though, were hilarious. While some people had a broken, chaotic stream of thoughts, his were normal, as if he was talking aloud to someone instead of thinking to himself. An internal conversation, which she couldn't really mock considering she did the same thing all the time. Well, most of the time anyway. A couch though, yeah it would probably have been more comfortable, still, it was much for interesting to walk in on a jaguar lounging on the pool table, looking completely relaxed until she decided to barge in.
From where she was perched on the pool table she see how incredibly amazing his jaguar form was. Ryder was a huge animal fanatic, so it was hard for her to not launch into a tirade about how amazing his power was. Then again, she probably would end up doing that anyway, which from what she had gathered of his thoughts, he would be pretty overwhelmed. Even her sitting close to him seemed to be a struggle for him, though it was more linked to the fact that he was currently a jaguar, of that Ryder was positive. Although the thought of someone at Silas seeing him and running away screaming, well, that was hysterical. Unless they had a fear of big cats, she couldn't see any of the students running away from him, even if he was a jaguar at the time. Swinging her legs back and forth like a little kid, Ryder continued to watch him with her ever present grin.
Ryder had a strange obsession with the moment that people realized she was a telepath. There always seemed to be a mix of shock, possibly even revulsion for some people, all stemming from the realization that all their thoughts weren't safe when she was around. It wasn't like she went out of her way to make enemies, but she couldn't help but find it funny how truly shocked people were. Everyone at Silas had a power, so she wasn't sure why it was so surprising when they found out hers. 'Good job, you caught on quicker than most people do.' The statement wasn't sarcastic at all, a truly sincere compliment from the girl who usually never gave them.
She liked this guy, he carried full blown conversations with himself, and for some reason, he didn't seem to mind the fact that she was a telepath. All in all, as far as first impressions went, Ryder was feeling pretty good about this one. Any time someone accepted her power without freaking out about it was a plus for her. 'Well, Kitty Cat, I didn't realize Mrs. Palmer was so intimidating. I mean, she does have that whole, silver haired wise person thing going on for her, like the female version of Gandalf if you will, but she just never seemed the scary type. As for the what makes me think that you'd destroy it?' She leaned in with a grin, doing her best to not realize how completely cool it was that he could become a jaguar at will. 'Because it'd be fun. Now, I'm a fan of pool, so naturally it would break my heart to see a pool table abused in such a way, but honestly, people take themselves way to seriously around here. But… if you'd rather nap then I suppose I have no objections.' He was still thinking, though it was funny to listen to him berate himself for talk too much. 'So are you bored yet? 'Cause I think I recall you thinking that you'd freak me out if you were. That's probably more exciting than sitting here.'
Pretty soon she'd talk so much that he'd get irritated. But she was bored and Ryder was ten times more talkative when she was bored. After all, conversations can lead to ideas which can lead to doing something interesting.

Cayden was quickly becoming more comfortable around this new person. It truly didn't seem to matter to her that he wasn't, well, human. Sometimes he wondered what that made him, but he would dismiss the thought. He was himself and the why's and how's didn't really mean much to him. It meant even less here, where everyone seemed to be beyond normal. It made him feel at home in a way he hadn't felt in a very, very long time. He watched her swing her feet in seeming contentment, which did a lot to relax him. Then again, as a feline, watching anything move seemed interesting and he resisted the urge to bat at her feet. Okay, so he was easily entertained. He always had been. Sue him. At least he didn't struggle with mindless boredom all the time. No, his mind found plenty of things to contemplate. Right now, that contemplation was focused on the girl sitting next to him.
What can I say? I'm a fast learner. And it's not that hard to come to that conclusion when someone's voice just randomly appears in your head. He was a fast learner most of the time. Until it came to studying history. How was anyone in their right mind supposed to keep all those names and dates straight? It was probably insulting to the people who had given their lives in various wars, but he couldn't help it. There was absolutely nothing about history that caught his attention. Most of that could be laid at the feet of his old history teacher, who would drone on and make all the students do power point after power point after damn powerpoint. It got older than the history they were discussing. Oh look, his mind was wandering again. He didn't even want to know what this girl thought about his mental health. Hopefully she wasn't a shrink in disguise or someone would be hauling him off to the loony bin. Or the zoo. Maybe it was the same place. Okay, bad joke. Horrible joke. He should be shot for that joke. If there was a way to shut his brain off, he probably would have done it a long time ago.
Cayden watched this girl with amber colored eyes, waiting for her to call the men with the white coats and strong drugs. At this point, though, he doubted she thought he was insane, which was astounding all by itself. If he'd just met himself, especially in this situation and under these circumstances, he would have carted himself off. Did that even make sense? Could someone physically haul themselves away? He shook off the thought. It was pointless meandering. Mulling. Whatever that stupid word was. She's not so much intimidating... until you lie to her from what I've heard. Hopefully, this Gandalf-woman would never ask him any hard-to-answer-without-getting-arrested kind of questions. That could end up... compromising. Not that he was a bad guy. He just liked to get into trouble on occasion and sometimes that trouble included alcohol and substances the government said were horrible when in fact they were wonderful. Great, now she'd think he was a druggie, too. Just great.
He felt the need to apologize for all of this pointlessness, but he didn't get the chance. She leaned toward him like she was about to impart a secret or some mind blowing words of wisdom. He didn't flinch or pull back at all. Instead, he lowered his head just slightly so he could look her in the eye. He let out a breath. I'm still not destroying the pool table on principle. Though I'd like to see the next person's face who came in. That would be awesome. He amused himself for a moment with thoughts of some poor student's face when they saw the table trashed. Still, getting in trouble for it was hardly worth the momentary satisfaction. Not that he couldn't be persuaded to do it, of course, but it wasn't something he'd do on his own. He'd have to find someone else with claws to take the fall, first.
I don't usually get bored, but I can entertain you if you want. She heard him thinking about that? Crap, now what was he going to do to freak her out? Now that he'd talked to her for a minute, he doubted shifting would phase her much. Instead, he looked her straight in the eye. Then he stuck his tongue out and crossed his eyes. People were usually amused by watching an animal do something they didn't usually do. Hell, he'd even done it a couple times in the mirror at home and nearly died of laughter. Still, he was determined to freak her out... somehow... Think, brain, think! When it came to random thoughts, he couldn't get himself to shut up, but now that he wanted a specific thought, everything quit working on him. Great. He shook his head at himself a little sadly at his lack of creativity, then willed himself to change shape. His entire body tingled for a moment, like he was getting sweat chills. The process was quick, only lasting a couple seconds, then he was just some random guy, squatting on a pool table and looking like an idiot. "Yeah, so I suck at freaking people out." He moved and hung his legs over the edge of the table next to her and finally held out his hand. "Cayden Murphy."

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? As she sat beside him, listening to his thoughts though not deliberately, Ryder couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if she was normal. People had told her it wasn't fun and admittedly, she liked being who she was. But there was no silence for her, not even when she was completely alone. Her powers always picked something up and while she could block out others thoughts, the concentration left a buzzing sound in her head that prevented any amount of peace. The choices were limited, listen in on private thoughts, or develop a massive headache by trying to be polite. Then again, no one had ever ever accused Ryder of being polite. Then again, she'd rather be called rude and insulting than boring any way. The smile that had slipped while she was thinking reappeared and she glanced over at the jaguar, or rather the Silas student. Some part of her felt relieved that he hadn't flipped on her, not because she was afraid of him, but because sometimes she got sick of people disliking her and of all the negative comments she received. Putting her arms out behind her, she leaned back, relaxing on the pool table and imagining how people would react if they walked in and saw a jaguar and a girl relaxing on top of the pool table. This was what made Silas so awesome.
'Well, that would be the logical conclusion. Unfortunately, most people aren't so logical. They flip out and think they're hearing a ghost or something like that. It's hilarious.' She couldn't help the grin as she sent the thought. It was a favorite pass time of hers and as long as they didn't actually know there was a telepath in the room, then she was safe. It didn't work out so great in class though, the teacher always found out she was the one who did it and she got in trouble. They didn't even smile when she tried to joke her way out of it. True stick in the muds, Silas was full of them and it was getting a bit depressing. 'If the thought helps at all, you're really much more mentally stable than other people I've talked to. Sort of… Well, you're more entertaining anyway and that definitely counts for something.' No lies there, she'd heard some pretty boring things as a telepath, thoughts that downright put her to sleep. You'd think people would have something interesting in their heads, even if it was only a daydream. But no, some people were just boring through and through. Getting stuck with a partner who was that way in class nearly killed Ryder, but she smiled and joked like she always did, trying to find their sense of humor, positive that somewhere inside them, everyone had one.
Laughter was an odd thing, it didn't meld so well with her telepathy and was the one thing she couldn't translate very well. It always came out wrong, so she just stopped trying. So when his thoughts got so utterly random she laughed out loud. 'I I swear I should keep a journal of the stuff you come up with. First I should run screaming, then I should think you're mentally unstable and now… it just gets better and better. You're a druggie. I don't usually get to know someone so quickly.' Teasing him felt comfortable, like she felt when she was with her long time friends at home. 'You're obviously very concerned over what I think of you. I'll ease your mind, you're pretty awesome, for a cat.' She winked dramatically and laughed again, only for a second pondering what people would think if they were in the room. A jaguar and a girl looking at each other in silence until she busts out in a laugh. Now she wanted someone to walk in, just to see what they would think. It would be great, that much she was sure of.
She smiled at him as he agreed to amuse her. He was already doing that, but she wanted to know what he was going to try. Still swinging her legs, she tilted her head as she waited. She reminded him of someone, but she couldn't really put her finger on who. Probably one of her friends from forever ago, that had to be it. She raised her eyebrows and chuckled as he stuck out his tongue and crossed his eyes. 'You're a natural, ever thought of being a comedian when you grow up?' His expression was priceless and though she wasn't surprised he'd done it, she couldn't help but laugh. A jaguar was an incredibly impressive animal and it just about killed Ryder from laughing so hard to see it do something so wacky.
He changed shape almost quicker than her brain could register what he was intending to do. Ryder smiled brightly at the jaguar newly turned teenage boy. What an insane power to have, she couldn't help but be just a little bit jealous. After all, when she was a kid and in love with animals all she'd ever wanted to be able to do was talk to one or be one. He certainly got the better end of the deal. She waited for him to settle down beside her before she said anything else, but he spoke before she could, this time aloud instead of continuing their silent conversation. 'To be fair, you were trying to freak out a telepath. Any ideas would have been seen in advance and completely prevented any freaking out from actually happening." Which kind of sucked when she thought about it. Surprises were one of the great parts about life and she'd always wanted to have one. But that was an impossible wish. She raised her own hand and shook his. "Ryder. Just Ryder, the other two names are strictly confidential and I'm afraid you just don't have high enough clearance." Grinning at him, she released his hand. "So what's with the lonely stalking around the hallways before picking such an empty room? I find people are usually more fun to talk to than inanimate objects. But hey, if you feel particularly attached to one sided conversations I could be quiet. But probably not…" Ryder shrugged and grinned sheepishly. She might joke about being able to be quiet, but chances were high that she'd barely make it a minute.

Cayden sat there on the pool table, still trying to wrap his mind around the whole telepath thing. So she could get into his head. It should have bothered him, but he wasn't a very private person. Sure, there were things he didn't like to talk about, but that didn't mean he cared if people knew. He just didn't want to open his mouth over it. Things like his relationship with his father. While the man had never physically abused his sons, the emotional abuse was pretty extreme. If this girl was looking for a link to what kind of person he was, that was the link that would provide the answers. His mother had died, and his once boisterous and fun-loving father had turned on his own kids. On a cognitive level, he knew that his dad was a dickhead now and there wasn't anything he could do about it. In his mind, he knew it didn't make him a bad person and he knew it didn't make his dad right in the things he said. On an emotional level, however, every fiber of his being knew, without a doubt, that he was just the worthless loser his dad said he was.
Resisting a snort, he pushed the constant matter to the back of his mind. This girl had just met him, and there was no reason to be dragging his issues out for her to pick through... if she'd even picked up on any of that. There was no telling, but she seemed to hear more than he thought. No, that wasn't right. She heard exactly what he thought, which was just as bad. Still, he didn't mind. What she made of it was up to her, but he wasn't going to change who he was until he saw fit to do so on his own. He didn't believe in changing for people, though he sometimes did. Superficial things, though. At the core, he was himself and he always would be. So you're a ghost impersonator. Nice. It was slightly impressive. If he'd had her ability, he didn't know if he'd be so creative. Then again, someone around her might have thought about it and she could have picked up the idea to use for herself. Okay, so being a telepath would be kinda nifty. A pain, but nifty at times. It made him wonder what kinds of trouble he could get in with his powers.
What kind of people have you been hanging out with if you consider me mentally stable? He didn't feel mentally stable. He was moody, depressed, and he buried his feelings. He lashed out at friends on a regular basis and.... oh yeah, he was currently carrying on a completely silent conversation with a stranger. Yeah, totally normal. Not. That was only pointed out in stark clarity at her next remarks about his randomness. Cayden only rolled his eyes, though. Fine, he was random and so maybe he did drugs on occasion. At least he wasn't completely creepy. He wasn't a murderer or a rapist. He didn't so psychotic things like count the cheerios in the bowl before eating it. He didn't spray paint himself or eat soap. He was normal except for the whole shifting thing. Only here at Silas, it seemed to be totally normal. It was weird. Was that an oxymoron? He had no idea, but he wasn't going to get into it, either.
No comedy for me. No, no, no, no, no... No. Just no. Getting along with people he was fine. Better than fine, usually. He could strike up a conversation with a stranger without a glitch, but there was no way--even after hell froze over--that he'd ever get on a stage. Especially not with a microphone. It was an instant and debilitating panic for him and he avoided it at all costs. It seemed to be a contradiction within his personality, that he could be charismatic in casual company, but terrified on a stage. He couldn't explain it, and it didn't really matter. It had always just been that way and he was content to continue on with the avoidance. He really hoped Silas didn't require a speech class. He'd puke. A lot. On the teacher, if he could manage it, just out of spite for making him get up in front of people. Okay, that was gross.
It was a bit of a relief for him once he shifted. He'd been a little afraid of her reaction. She might not know it, but it was the first time in his life that he'd shifted in front of someone. Okay, well, that's the cat out of the bag, because she obviously knew now. Man, this was going to take some getting used to. At this point, he was speaking out loud just to prove to himself that this wasn't some freaky dream even though he knew it wasn't. Cayden smiled a genuine smile at her, glad to be--he thought, anyway--making a friend. "Yeah, going for a surprise when you know what's coming is slightly challenging." After a short moment, he laid back next to her, totally comfortable with the situation. Though he had to admit to himself that the pool table was more comfortable as a jaguar. Physically, at least. "Just Ryder?" He nodded a little to himself. "So you get full access to every thought I have, and I don't even get a full name? Brutal." He was smiling and his tone light. What she kept to herself was her business and he wouldn't blame her for keeping her name to herself if it was something like Gertrude or Ursula.
Cayden breathed deeply in contentment, though part of him was planning ways to get her full name out of her. He cut the thoughts off abruptly. Thinking about it now would do him no good. Unfortunately, he had a short attention span and he'd forget all about it later, most likely. "Well, you probably already know that I don't usually walk around in animal form around people, so I was testing the waters a little... seeing how people would react. It was getting a little boring to be honest, so please, talk away. I don't mind in the least." As a talkative person himself, at least mentally, it was nice to have someone who didn't just sit there and stare mutely. He liked conversation. At least he didn't have to worry about any awkward silences or anything which was lucky for him. Silence usually made him babble like a fool and nine times out of ten, he'd say something he would instantly regret. "So what brings you all the way down here to pick on me, hmm?" He rolled his head sideways to look at her, once again not bothered by the proximity. Comfortable wasn't the right word. Not quite. He was... content? No, that wasn't right either. He simply felt like he'd known her a long time, which made no sense to him. Like she was some long lost friend who he didn't recognize on the outside. Even that thought wasn't as unsettling as it should have been.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? The moment she hated her powers hit her full force as he thought on all the things that made him who he was. She knew all these things about him and his life and his past and she hated it. It wasn't so bad, learning what had happened in his life, but she wanted to learn it on his terms, not just because he was thinking about it and she happened to be in the room. Some part of her felt compelled to tell him what made her the way she was, to share the stuff she thought of that no one else knew about.
Maybe she'd tell him about the ever constant questions her mother threw at her, the psychologist that felt it was her job to fix her crumbling family and Ryder knew what that meant, that she was the problem. She was the one who had brought their small family to its end. Her father's smiling face, calling her his little Rockstar. They played ball out in the backyard and she'd run as fast as she could with her dad cheering her on. Her own personal number one fan till he disappeared from her life without explanation. But she knew, she knew why he left. You couldn't deal with it. Couldn't man up and be the father of the town freak. Maybe she'd even tell him about her one year in high school, with her loud mouth and desperation to make friends, only to end up the hated girl of the school. Call me heartless. They all do. The token on her low back just a constant reminder.
Her constant stream of thoughts prevented her from hearing the rest of Cayden's thoughts, blocking her mind to deal with its own problems. No. She wouldn't tell Cayden any of that. She couldn't. No one wanted someone just dumping their life story on them, not deliberately. Besides, the thought was uncomfortable, him knowing that much about her. She preferred things up close and exciting but not so personal that they might actually see that maybe she wasn't always quite so happy, so talkative and sarcastic. Friends were great to hang out and make trouble around town with, but there was a line that Ryder had trouble crossing.
'The normal number of crazies. You apparently haven't met enough people at this school. They blow you right out of the water, my friend. It's what makes Silas so… interesting. For lack of a better word.' Shaking off the glum mood her thoughts had put her in, she sighed, happy to be laying back on the pool table, completely relaxed now that she wasn't listening to the intimate details of Cayden's past. With a smile she stared up at the ceiling, folding her hands over her stomach and tapped out a beat with her fingers, her foot tapping to the beat that she creating in her head. 'I think I want to start a band. It's been a ridiculous amount of time since I've played my drums seriously and lets be honest, it's way more fun to play an instrument with other people.' She glanced over at Cayden, knowing that she'd taken a complete turn from what they had been talking, or rather thinking, about. 'Maybe a band is too normal for this place though…' She thought about it, but an answer wasn't presenting itself. Besides, she hadn't even seen any kind of music class at this school, so there might not be very many musically inclined people at Silas.
"It kind of sucks sometimes. Think about it, no surprise parties, no awesome presents from your friends and no mystery in life. The most incredibly boring thing ever. Though it does have it's up sides." She couldn't help the chuckle at the thought of all the pranks she'd pulled using her power. Telepathy had its pros and cons, but Ryder knew it was that way for any power. She'd lucked out really. It would've been worse if she'd been stuck with something else. Turning her head Ryder realized with slight surprise that Cayden was now laying just beside her, both of them chilling on the pool table. She smiled but turned her head back, staring at the ceiling again. "Life isn't fair. Such a shame, isn't it? But hey, maybe one day you'll find out my name. With my luck we'll have a class together and the teacher will say it while he's calling roll." She rolled her eyes. It had happened more than once and it was irritating. Why couldn't teachers understand that she didn't like her first name? Too many bad memories and Ryder was just more fitting.
"Well, your permission is going to make my rambling that much worse. I hope you know what you've done. And if you're looking to test the waters, I'd say you've done a fine job." Her mouth quirked up in a smile, still tapping out a quiet beat with her fingers. This was the longest conversation she'd had with anyone in a long time. Most people gave up or freaked out when she popped up inside of their head. It was fun to sit here and talk, though she was beginning to feel a little fidgety. Conversation was nice but she still preferred to be doing something while she talked. She grinned and turned her head to look at him, happy that he was as comfortable with her as she felt with him. "Well, old friend, your naturally charming personality just drew me down here. Honestly though, boredom. If you hadn't noticed I get bored frequently and you were the most interesting person around." Her grin faded into a slight smile. "Which is saying something considering we're at Silas. Still, as fascinating as this conversation is, I want to do something." Unfolding her hands, she pushed herself up and hopped off the pool table, turning back to Cayden. "You up for a game of pool? Unless you have a better idea… I'm feeling uncreative."

The normal number of crazies. You apparently haven't met enough people at this school. They blow you right out of the water, my friend. It's what makes Silas so… interesting. For lack of a better word.' Cayden listened with a mental ear, wondering if that made him one of said crazies, or if he was more normal than most. On one hand, he had his own baggage and issues to deal with, even aside from being a shifter. On the other hand, he wasn't insane. At least he didn't think he was. Ryder's words also made him worry slightly about just what kinds of people stayed here. It should have come with the territory. There was no way a large group of people with extraordinary abilities would all be totally stable. What about people who saw ghosts, or who had lost control and hurt someone? That kind of thing had to take it's toll on a person. Cayden, at least, had never hurt someone because of what he was. He'd spent most of his free time hiding it from people.
He watched as she started tapping out a beat on her stomach. In his mind, he created other beats and notes to go with it, even without trying. I think I want to start a band. It's been a ridiculous amount of time since I've played my drums seriously and lets be honest, it's way more fun to play an instrument with other people.' She played drums? Okay, that was seriously cool. He'd always wanted to try it, but had never gotten around to it unless he counted playing Rockband with his brother. No, he'd picked up a guitar instead and gotten a friend to teach him the basics. He wasn't amazing like one guy he went to school with who could play behind his head, but he was adequate. There was no way he could play in a band, though. Throwing up on people out of nerves would seriously dampen the moment. It would be a cold day in hell before he sang in front of someone, either. He was good, but only as long as nobody was listening. Yeah, that didn't even make sense. Didn't make it less true, though.
Cayden frowned at her next words. "Okay, that would suck. Can't someone like... plan something for you then just avoid you until then?" His overactive brain was already trying to figure out how someone could surprise her. He'd heard it was impossible to think about nothing, but he didn't know if it was true. It was impossible for him, but if he kept thinking about something else, did Ryder get the background noise, too? Or did she only read someone's top layers? He thought about asking her, but didn't. She was in his head after all and if she wanted to answer that particular stray thought, then she would. He was quickly discovering that she was a person who said what she wanted when she wanted. It was an admirable trait and he thought more people should be like her.
"I haven't gotten my schedule yet, but it's on my list of things to do today, so we'll see." Having a class with her would probably make any lesson more bearable. Not that her full name mattered. In his opinion, people were allowed to keep their secrets. He'd kept quite a few of his own, after all. Even his closest friends didn't know what he could do. "I don't mind rambling. It's better than silence." Not that there was anything wrong with silence, either. Maybe he was just an agreeable person. Well, he was agreeable most of the time. Other times, not so much, but he was in a good mood today and felt like being social. He'd deal with tomorrow when it got here. He narrowed his eyes at her "old friend" comment. That's cheating. It also made him blush just slightly behind his grin. Okay, so powerful telepath was powerful.
Why was it, that as soon as you knew someone could hear your thoughts, you automatically think about all the things you wouldn't want them to know? Cayden cringed as his brain took an automatic and very definite detour into the gutter. No, don't think about sex now! Stupid, rampant, teenage hormones! Stop that! He sat up abruptly and shook his head. It wasn't even directed at Ryder, but he was a teenage male after all, and thoughts happened. Okay, he could see how having a telepath in your head all the time might get a little uncomfortable. Not under normal circumstances, but at the moment, when he looked like a tomato in the face, he'd much rather have a brick wall around his head. He took a deep breath, and tried to pretend that his thoughts were totally normal. "Let's play pool. Pool is great. Pool is awesome." And diverting. He slid off the table and started gathering up the balls that he'd swatted out of his way when he'd first claimed the table. Sorry. Yep, had to tack that on there. Where was the hole to crawl into when you needed one? She'd probably heard worse, but that didn't mean.. it was just.. he didn't want... fuck it. Abruptly, he started laughing. The situation was just a little ridiculous in his mind, and laughing about it was better than being embarrassed.

DANCE HARD LAUGH MORE TURN THE MUSIC UP NOW( party like a rock star ! )C A N I G E T A W H A T N O W ? 'Stage fright?' She couldn't help the grin that appeared. Okay, so maybe it wasn't nice of her to want to laugh at what he was thinking, but it was funny to think that this guy would get so nervous playing a guitar in front of people. Though she was impressed that he knew how to play the guitar. She'd never had the patience to learn all those different cords and notes. Memorization was really not her thing. 'For the sake of everyone, I choose not to sing in front of people. I count it as charity. Trust me, you would too if you heard me sing.' Sadly, she wasn't completely joking when she said that. Her talents definitely didn't include singing, which was disappointing because she actually liked to sing. The thought depressed her for a moment but she shook it off. There wasn't any reason to be upset about it. Besides, she preferred playing the drums and would take that over singing any day.
Ryder smiled at his ideas. 'Don't get too excited, no one has managed to surprise me yet. Though I do welcome the challenge. Besides, you don't know it yet, but avoiding me is very hard.' She wished he would try though. There was nothing she wanted more than to be surprised, a nice surprise for once. The thought that he would try made her smile. It was a stupid thing to want, especially being telepathic. But didn't people say that you always wanted what you couldn't have? It made sense to her.
She pursed her lips as he thought about a her powers, not sure if she wanted to tell him or not. Sometimes it was more fun to not say what she could and couldn't hear. She looked over at him. It wasn't fair to not tell him though, he was being so nice to her about it. Fair enough, right? "I don't hear everything. I hear your clearest thoughts in the form of sentences, so when I'm around a bunch of people it sounds like there's a crowd rattling around in my head." It was an incredibly unpleasant feeling, but she was used to it and the head aches that often ensued. "If you're only focusing on one train of thought, one idea, then that's all I hear. Unless I'm really concentrating, which gives me the worst migraines." She shook her head. "Needless say, I don't do that very often. Unless I desperately feel the need to. But the fantasy book cliche of thinking of a brick wall? Yeah, that doesn't work. It's just annoying." She laughed at that. People always seemed to think it would work. When all it really did was make them focus even more on what they didn't want her to know. That was the thing about people, tell them not to think of something and it was a pretty safe bet that they would.
"Well, look forward to that." She raised her eyebrows and smirked. "Classes here are actually pretty awesome. Better than the average school classes anyway. Power Control, Simulation, blah, blah, blah." Now, to be fair, it wasn't so bad. She just had enough practice with her powers that listening to someone else drone on and on about how she should use them was annoying. Especially since she had yet to meet a teacher who was a telepath. As a general rule Ryder just wasn't very interested in taking advice. Listening to people, especially adults… Well, it didn't happen very often.
Ryder's eyes widened as his thoughts shifted quickly. God, what was it with teenage guys? Don't listen. Think about something else. For goodness sakes, anything else would be better than listening to what he was thinking about. She forced her mind away from his, desperately trying to think about something else. The weathers rather nice. The year in general has been really. Okay, this wasn't working. Her mind was already drifting back into the familiar territory of her telepathy. Thankfully, now he was only thinking about how awkward it was, instead of what had initially made it awkward. She breathed a sigh of relief, now standing beside the pool table. Despite everything his comment made her grin and she started laughing, happy to find that he was doing the same. She stepped forward and gave him a light hearted shove. "Very smooth, genius. Hey, at least you have the decency to be embarrassed. I've met some guys that thought that kind of thing deliberately when they learned I was a telepath." She rolled her eyes, but was still smiling, still finding what had happened hilarious.
Turning back to the pool table, she racked the balls. Once she was done she set the cue ball opposite of them on the pool table and picked up two pool sticks. Pivoting on her heel, she tossed one of them to Cayden. "Let's see what you've got. I've been told I'm quite the pool shark." A bit of a stretch, but Ryder was competitive. "Say goodbye to what you have left of your pride. You're about to be beat by a girl. The only time I'll proudly call myself one." Ryder grinned at him.
