- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi had to admit, he’d been more than a little surprised when Lukan Moore had actually showed up for class. He was pretty sure he could count such occurrences on a single hand and still have a few fingers to spare. It wouldn’t do to make a scene, though – even if he dearly wanted to – and so he pretended like nothing was out of place as they ran through the class. Given his attitude about his power, it was probably lucky for Lukan that they were doing a theoretics class today, rather than a practical one down in the training room. Particularly considering how very well the boy would probably react at being back in that room again. Andi mused on the possible positive effects peer pressure could have – trying to ignore the equally possible catastrophic effects that might occur – while one of the girls answered a question he’d put to her.
“That is correct, Miss Anna; very well put. Unfortunately, that should be the bell now -” It rang then, as though on cue, and he graced the class with one of his more charming smiles. “-so we will finish this tomorrow. You’re all excused. Except Mr. Moore; you stay here.” He wasn’t going to make a scene. At least, not where everyone could see. But he was plenty sick of the petulant little shadow manipulator skipping his class with ridiculous and far-fetched excuses like “I’ve got everything under control” when he clearly didn’t. A good scare could set the boy’s power off – heck, a poor one could do just as much – and he didn’t seem to understand the danger in that. If there was no way for Andi to get that through, then he was perfectly will to use the threat of being kept at the school as a motivator.

Honestly, he had nothing else better to do... so he attended class. Sad right? A sixteen year old boy can't find anything more entertaining than class... and a class he hates nonetheless! Perhaps if Luk had more friends, and if he actually wanted friends, then he'd have ditched Andi's class just like he had for the past week or so. But he didn't, so here he was... sorta paying attention. Mostly he was just drawing on a piece of scrap paper, but at least he was here.
Apparently, showing up for class once a week wasn't going to fly with Andi. That was to be expected, but Luk was still going to act as if a major atrocity had been committed against him. "You're kidding me, right?" Lukan shot a few glares at those who dared to giggle before looking back at Andi. He weighed his options: make a run for it, and end up getting chased by whatever animal Mr. Andvari was favoring that day... or stay here and just suffer through a supposed lecture. For once acting on his better judgement, Luk stayed seated... and quickly stuffed the scrap piece of paper into his backpack. There were some less than appealing images of Andi that Luk would rather the other not see.

And, of course, that would never do. He was relived – and a little worried, he had to admit – when Lukan had only sat and doodled quietly. It made him think of the calm before a storm, and that was never a good thing.
Lukan’s reaction to his order wasn’t a surprise, exactly, but he still frowned dangerously. Of course, it was completely absurd of him to be upset that Lukan had skipped – what was he thinking wasting Lukan’s time like this? He very nearly let those very words slip out, but contented himself with shooting warning glances at the gigglers that were taking their sweet time getting out of his classroom. He had no problem dealing with them, either. It must have shown, because the last two girls got a little wider-eyed and scuttled out of the room. Well, that had been good for his ego, at least. Now to deal with one of the few kids bull-headed enough to act like this.
“How many days has it been since you were last here, Mr. Moore?” He had a piece of paper next to his left hand that said exactly how many, but he wanted to hear what Lukan thought the count was. “And how exactly is it that you expect to become at all proficient in your powers if you never come to the class that teaches that?”

Lukan stared up at Andi, trying his best to look bored and indifferent. He'd gotten quite good at that lately. But, he was still going to answer his questions.. for now anyway. And maybe those answers wouldn't be exactly polite, but they were still answers, right? "Ugh, I dunno. Like..." He counted back on his fingers." Luk managed to count up to thirteen, and that didn't include the two times he'd asked to go to the bathroom then ditched the rest of class. "... Well I'm here now, aren't I?" Lukan honestly didn't feel like giving Andi the exact number.
Andi's next comment resulted in the usual roll of the eyes response from Luk. "I'll teach myself. I already told you this." But, it was quite obvious that Luk's attempts to self teach were proving very ineffective. Even now his slight anger was making the shadows around his feet buzz in anticipation. Sometimes he swore this little shadow posse of his was like a group of teens always waiting for a fight to break out. He continued to glare defiantly up at Andi for several moments, but when Andi's shadow jumped to the shadow manipulator's feet, Luk couldn't help but look down at his desk in embarrassment.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It wasn’t the first time Andi had considered strangling a student. It wasn’t always Lukan, either – though the kid probably held a disproportionate number of them. It was hard impossible to hide things from the Headmistress, though, and he rather liked his job. So he only sighed as he moved up the rows to stand next to the desk in front of Lukan. Why shout the length of the class if he didn’t have to? “The attendance sheet says there are about a dozen missed classes in the last . . . three weeks or so. That’s going to make passing my class difficult, if not impossible. Any ideas what will happen if you don’t pass my class?”
He pulled himself up on the other desk with a derisive snort as Lukan defended his ability to teach himself. “Oh, yes, that brilliant plan. I assume that’s what you’ve been doing all this time you haven’t been in class. You’ll of course show me all the progress you’ve made, won’t you?” It wasn’t really a question, and he leaned forward expectantly. There were only a few moments of defiant silence before Andi’s shadow sprang away, leaving him with the disconcerting pool of light where his dark silhouette should be. “Well . . . that wasn’t quite what I had in mind.” He saw Lukan’s head duck and read the embarrassment in the way he sat, and had to fight down the urge to sigh wearily. “Luk, you’re smart enough to know you have almost no control. If you’d admit that, I think you could have this mastered pretty quickly. At the very least your . . . slipups could be gotten under control.” He knew the minefield he was potentially wading into, but he was going to get this idea across if it killed him!

"I flunk out." He frowned up at Andi and exhaled slowly. "But... but whatever. That's fine with me. I don't want to be here. Not in this class, not in this school... go on, check my file. It'll give you all the proof you need." Nicely printed in Luk's file were up to six recorded escape attempts.. and those were only the ones the headmistress knew of. In all honesty, he didn't even know where he would go if he did escape... but he probably would have just gotten on a bus and gone as far as his money would take him. Luk had himself convinced that he wanted to be alone, and that was what would make him happy.. course he was completely wrong.
Lukan managed another glare at Andy when he insulted his "plan" of sorts. It was so an awesome plan! Well, least in his head it made sense. Andi, damn him, just seemed to have a way of making it sound... less awesome. Lukan silently cursed him for that trait of his. "I do have control! I DO!" The temperamental boy stood up, causing his chair to screech noisily against the ground. "I have control and you're just... you're lying or something! So just KNOCK IT-" Before he could finish his rant, Lukan's shadow puppets expanded in a chaotic mass of darkness. Within seconds, the room was filled with nothing but black. The darkness was almost deafening, but Luk's ragged breathing was still there to be heard. He stayed quiet for a long time before speaking. "You... you said quickly." He glared through the blackness at what he could only assume was Andi's face. "You really think you can teach me quickly?" Luk was just too prideful to admit that he needed Andi's help, and he probably would never say it flat out... but at least he was considering Andi's proposition in his head.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LEAVEMYDOOROPENJUSTACRACK ((T A K E M E A W A Y F R O M H E R E))!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi had heard about the escape attempts, but he hadn’t bothered to read all the minute little details they had in the file. It had bothered him at the first report to find that Lukan was so actually that enthusiastic about his dislike. Lots of students were freaked out or upset when they first came to Silas, but most adjusted and at least accepted the school. Lukan, though . . . Andi sighed and shook his head. “No, you don’t ‘flunk out’ of this class. You repeat it until you get it right, and then you can think about graduating and getting out.” If Andi had it his way, Lukan wouldn’t be allowed out of the main building until he’d passed a basic control test. With flying colors. The Headmistress wasn’t quite so . . . strict in her thinking, though, and he had to content himself with after class meetings and extra tutoring sessions that Lukan was just as likely to skip.
He refused to react to the glare he earned with anything more than a small smile. It wasn’t a surprise that he’d ruffled feathers, and he had decided it was just easier ride out the resulting tidal wave of teenage fit-pitching. Still, he couldn’t help but straighten when Lukan leapt to his feet, bracing himself against the shouts and the possibility that he might have finally pushed Lukan to violence. He would never know, though, as shadows sudden swallowed the room, effectively stopping them both. Crap., this again. He shoved away the panic that had started creeping up his spine by listening to Lukan’s less-than-calm breathing – at least he wasn’t the only one upset. After several long moments of this, Andi sighed loudly and shook his head, pleased when his voice came out as sarcastic as he intended. “Wait, let me guess. You meant to do that?” He shouldn’t push. Not now, not when he was supposed to be trying to be rational. The kid just made it so easy, and Andi’s patience with this was wearing thinner and thinner anyway. He was surprised at Lukan’s final, hesitant question and he paused to weigh his answer. Answer truthfully and risk undoing what he’d just inadvertently accomplished, or lie and risk that blowing up in his face later. “I think this would be easier to gauge if you occasionally showed up to class. But, yes, probably. If we can pin down what’s causing your block, then the solution . . . should be pretty simple.” He hoped Lukan hadn’t noticed the slight pause. “Now do you mind bringing the lights back?”

Andi's words had Luk glaring... again. He sucked his cheek irritably while he mulled over some smart ass answer. "Fine. Then I'll just repeat the class until I turn eighteen. Then I'm so out of this damn school." Obviously, it wasn't by Lukan's choice that he was at Silas. His foster parents thought he needed to learn how to better control his little shadow puppets, which he did, and sent him off. Leaving Silas was numero uno on Luk's list of what to do once he turned eighteen. Following it would be the act of leaving his foster home, then maybe he'd catch a train to nowhere. Obviously, Luk's actions were a bit more... passionate, than logic based.
The sixteen year old's power was also heavily tied to the boy's emotions. Whenever Luk was feeling an intense amount of emotion (for instance, anger), that was when his power grew harder to control. And quite frankly, that only pissed him off more. "But I don't have a block..." So he thought. Luk's "block" of sorts was probably linked to the kid's general unhappiness with his surroundings. The calmer he felt, the easier the shadows were to control. But, when he was all out of balance (like he usually was) then out came the wild shadows. Luk just wasn't the type to psychoanalyze himself to find said problem, and even if he did... well he didn't know how to fix it. "These stupid ass shadows just do what they want." Lukan sat down with a look of defeat on his face... and in a way, he was calmer. The shadows proceeded to creep back from the walls and into their usual forms.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi laughed outright at Lukan’s comeback, shaking his head in amused exasperation. “Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but it might not work out so smoothly. Until you’ve mastered your power, you’re a danger to yourself and others. I’m sure the Headmistress could find a way to legally retain you on those grounds.” Actually, he wasn’t even sure that was true. It should be, but that didn’t mean it was . . . he kept his face smooth and hoped Lukan had as good a concept of the law that he did of logic. Honestly, though, Andi couldn’t understand the consistent hatred for the school. He had read Lukan’s file several months ago – when there had been only one escape attempt – and had seen the equal number of attempts from his original and foster homes. It seemed like, if he hated those places so much, he’d take advantage of the escape the school offered. He wanted to explore that, but he thought now was probably not the best time for it.
Lukan might not have a block in the traditional sense, but there was certainly a learning block. He was just sort of extending the idea to whatever caused that block. Which meant – and he shuddered at the thought – they were probably going to have to sit down and actually talk about Luk beyond his ability (or lack of) to control shadows. Andi wasn’t really a touchy-feely kind of guy, and quite obviously Luk wasn’t either, so that was probably going to be a fun conversation . . . he shook his head and focused in Lukan’s direction as the boy dropped back into his seat. “No, they don’t. They’re not alive, which means you’re the one doing it. For whatever reason.” He frowned as the light crept back into view and he could see how putout his student looked. Andi wasn’t the type to give false compliments just to make people feel better, so he hoped Lukan knew he meant it when he said: “At least we know you’re strong enough to darken a room with open windows.” The entire wall to his left was filled with half a dozen windows that were currently pouring in the midafternoon sunlight – and hadn’t been a moment ago.

Be forced... to stay here? The idea was so repulsive that Lukan actually shuddered, and not just for dramatic effect. But, much to Andi's pleasure, Luk believed the guy. That's just what scared him. Lukan didn't want to stay in Silas, or any other place that placed restrictions on him. Basically, the kid hated all schools... especially those that he had to live at. Think of that one kid on the block, there's always one, whose parents control him to the point where he can't even go to the bathroom without asking for permission. Then as soon as that kid hit college, guess where he ended up? Jail. And why? Because the kid just craved freedom so much that he went overboard. Right now, Luk was experiencing something similar. He really did need someone to watch him and keep him from doing shit, (all kids needed that) but he was so desperate to keep his new found freedom that he didn't want anyone interfering. The school was doing just that.
"They feel alive... and if they aren't, then I've never been so annoyed with an inanimate object before in my life." Lukan sighed. He was just about to rest his chin on the back of his hand when he noticed Andi's shadow winding around his ankle like a cat. The boy growled and stomped on the shadowy figure, not like that would do anything. Luk was just about to launch into another rant about god knows what when Andi actually complimented him. "Oh... yeah I guess I am." He didn't exactly smile, but he stopped frowning. Luk still wanted to be somewhat difficult though. "And how am I supposed to attend a boring class? I was practically falling asleep." Well, even though he was indirectly insulting Andi, he was still openly considering the possibility of attending class again.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To Andi’s immense relief, Lukan made no indication that he had caught Andi’s bluff. Oh course, the shadows made it hard to see, so he should Lukan made no audible indication. He listened as carefully as possible, waiting for something to happen . . . even the door closing as Lukan ran for it would have been acceptable. Well, sort of. Andi would have to chase him down then, but at least he’d get a chance to exercise his power – something he usually only got to do on the weekends and during the occasional emergency that happened in class. There was no answer to his spectacular problem, but he didn’t push it. At least Lukan would be thinking about it now. He paused at Lukan’s insistence that his shadow was alive, even as he smiled at the second half of the comment. It didn’t make sense to him that the shadows could be alive, but if they felt that way to Lukan, then maybe there was more to it than Andi was considering. He watched his own shadow at Lukan’s feet and frowned slightly. “See? That looks like the shadow thinks you want to be comforted.” Lukan stamped down on it, and Andi frowned slightly. “Even if you don’t think so.” Honestly, it bothered him to see Lukan attacking his shadow, mostly because the situation surrounding it shouldn’t be possible. To attack his shadow, Lukan should have to attack him, and he didn’t like that idea . . . After a second, he jerked his head up to watch how his compliment was received. Not bad. Not great, but he looked a comparatively more cheerful. Which made Andi feel like he was starting to make some actual ground, and he was feeling a little better too. Of course, Lukan managed to put a stop to that almost immediately. “Well, thanks, Lukan.” He tried not be insulted. Really. His voice was still a little short when he continued, “Try to find something about the class that interests you. Lots of students like the theoretical ideas I give and look forward to trying them out. If that doesn’t work, you’ll just have to accept that it’s an inescapable spot of suffering that you just have to endure between the practical classes.” Maybe if he hadn’t been so put off by the comment, he might have noticed that a comment at all meant Luk was thinking about it. Why ask otherwise, right?

Lukan blurted out a somewhat panicked response, all in one breath. "I don't need comforting does it look like I need it 'cause I don't." Gee, that didn't sound like a lie or anything. NOT! Luk continued to glare at Andi with a look of offense and embarrassment. The boy's cheeks even flushed a light pink. He wanted nothing more than to look like stone, like something that didn't need to be comforted or babied. Well, okay he wanted a lot more than that, but looking "adult" was probably at the top of his list. But, just because he thought he didn't need care didn't make it true. In fact, just for his little rant, some miscellaneous shadow (probably from the chair he was sitting on) had itself wrapped around his chest in what one could only assume was an affectionate gesture. Luk blushed deeper as he realized this and made a grab for his own shirt, as if twisting the fabric could make the shadow retreat.
The sixteen year old should have figured Andi would respond in a somewhat snarky fashion. "Inescapable place of suffering pretty much defines the whole school, don't ya think?" The boy sighed with frustration and rested his cheek against the back of his hand. He continued to look up at Andi with irritation... but a bit of confusion now too. "Why you even helping me? Just be like the other teachers and talk to me once, then come to the resolution that I hate the school and don't want to be a part of it. That's what they all do and it seems to be working fine for them." Luk folded his arms and put his head down. You couldn't look much more defeated than that.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LEAVEMYDOOROPENJUSTACRACK ((T A K E M E A W A Y F R O M H E R E))!!! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi’s eyebrows crawled toward his hairline at Lukan’s outburst, caught off guard at the disproportionate reaction to his comment. He had just meant to make a casual observation, not embarrass the kid. Of course, he still found the defensiveness and ensuing embarrassment interesting. Either Lukan was blind, he didn’t realize he thought he needed comforting, or he was just that against other people knowing. The color to his face probably ruled out the first two . . . Andi folded his arms somewhat uncomfortably; he wasn’t very good at comforting people, and particularly wasn’t sure how to handle a depressed teenage boy without ending up looking like an absolute creeper. Fortunately for him, a shadow provided an acceptable distraction – appearing out of nowhere and wrapping Lukan in what looked like an unwanted hug. Andi dropped his eyes to the ground (noticing the lack of the usual number of shadows) and waited a moment to let Lukan gather himself.
When he glanced back up, he was met with Lukan’s smart-alek mouth, and he smiled. “Well, yeah, I suppose it does. Though if you tell the Headmistress that I said that, I’ll deny it and throw under the bus without a second thought.” His smile grew slightly, even though he was only sort of joking. Lukan’s reaction seemed to be to collapse – his head dropped to his hand while he spoke, and then eventually landed on his folded arms on the desk. Once again, Andi wasn’t entirely sure how to answer that. This time, though, it was because there were a lot of parts to it, and he hadn’t really thought about it very much anyway. He cleared his throat thoughtfully and leaned back slightly, “Well, to be frank, I don’t think that says much about them as teachers. If I gave up every time a student decided class wasn’t exactly the way they wanted, I’d have taught Alexandria Duvell and no one else. As it is, I don’t like to lose.” Which, he admitted to himself, made him sort of sound like a jerk. It wasn’t just a competition that he had to win, but he didn’t know how to put it, so he just shifted slightly and shrugged. “Besides, even if it works for them, it’s obviously not for you. Maybe you don’t need comforting, but you sure seem to need someone around.”

"Gee Andi, you're a real good guy." Sarcasm dripped off Lukan's tongue as he spoke. Professor Andvari was somewhat... unorthodox, compared to most teachers. Luk wasn't quite sure if he liked that or not. The guy wasn't as easy to bullshit as the other teachers, so that definitely made things a bit harder on Lukan when it came to ditching class. But that also meant the guy wasn't dumb like a sack of hammers, and if Luk had to talk with someone, at least he wouldn't have to talk to Andi like a five year old. As for the sarcasm... well, Luk figured that as long as he could win whatever snarky battles the two participated in, then he could deal. Not to say that you'd get the teen to admit that he sorta liked Andi. The best you could probably get out of him was that the guy wasn't "too bad."
As Andi talked, Luk busied himself by drawing circles on the desk with his index finger. But, he was listening... for once. Snarky comments included. "Damn your competitiveness..." Luk managed a growl but let it shift into a sigh. He hated to admit it, but all this heckling from Andi was actually wearing him down. "If you're saying I need a babysitter, then you're wrong. Entirely wrong." The boy managed to throw another trademark glare up at Andi before looking back down at the desk. He remained quiet for a long moment, then mumbled something almost inaudible. "You're not letting me leave until I agree to attend your class, are you?"

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Andi laughed out loud at Lukan’s sarcastic comment, but didn’t reprimand him like he rather thought he should. “I do what I can to make your life a little easier.” He was fully aware that Lukan probably thought he was doing the exact opposite, but that wasn’t going to stop him. Students seemed to do better in his class if he was more relaxed – to a point. Letting them run hog-wild was a really bad idea, of course, but he didn’t have to be a lunatic, Nazi man either. Plus, the more he treated his students like they were real people instead of faces in the crowd, the more they behaved, and the easier things went for everyone. Every once in a while he’d get a student like Lukan, though, who insisted on going against the flow and making disruptive, irritating waves. And that just ground on Andi’s nerves until some sort of compromise had been met, or he’d gotten his way.
He watched Lukan drawing on the desk and frowned slightly, though he didn’t pause in what he was saying. Lukan rewarded him with another comment that made him smile, though he was surprised that he hadn’t earned something more . . . emphatic. But the anger – sort of – came a second later, and this time Andi threw back his head in exasperation. “That’s not what I meant. Not that I necessarily think a babysitter is a bad idea for you, but . . . no. I just meant you need someone around to keep your bullheaded bad ideas in check.” He met glare for glare, and when Lukan’s gaze dropped back to the desk, shook his head. He wasn’t going to be the one who broke the silence, though, so he just adjusted his position on the desk and waited. His mind had started to wonder by the time Lukan finally spoke, and he almost missed the mumbled words. Instead, they made him chuckle, and would have patted Luk’s arm if hadn’t had to reach all the way over. “Now, see, you can learn when you put your mind to it. No, I’m not letting leave until you agree to attend. And participate in the practical classes.” That was likely to go over well – Lukan practicing with all those other students around. But he’d have to overcome that, or he’d never get any better.
