Dark circles were evident under the student’s eyes as she wearily peeked at herself in the bathroom mirror. Even Alex seemed to be having a difficult time with her classes this semester. It was like the teachers were trying to kill them off one assignment at a time! After hours of staying up late to write a 10 page paper on how to properly control one’s powers, Rini had gone through the entire school day on only two hours of sleep. It was something she was used to, but having an early class in the simulator room had really taken it out of her. It had been a gripping thirty minutes in which each student was paired up and sent into a room. The simulator presented them with an out of control situation, and from there the two students were supposed to work together to demonstrate how to effectively use their powers and get the situation back under control. Unfortunately, Rini had been paired up with the class ditz who took dating more seriously than school work. The girl hardly had any control of her powers and botched any attempt to rectify the simulated situation. Even as skilled as Rini was, she couldn’t do it on her own. It had specifically been designed for the two of them.
The result was an F on the assignment. Serinity had been furious with the girl who didn’t care one way or another. As soon as the blonde walked out of the room, she found the brunette latched onto her boyfriend snogging away. Rini gritted her teeth and walked away before someone got hurt. Or expelled. The rest of the day passed by so slowly that Rini couldn’t help but wonder if a time manipulator was messing with the time stream. With classes so dull, it was a wonder that she didn’t fall asleep, either. Finally, it was time to go back to the dorm. “Hey Alex,” the girl had said with little enthusiasm, “See you in the morning. I’m going to pass out. Night.” The green, digital numbers on the microwave read 5:28. It was so early, but Rini couldn’t stay up any longer. With another full day ahead of her, she needed as much sleep as she could get to make up for lost time!
Serinity stood in front of her mirror and stripped her body of the day’s clothes and slipped into her pjs. A massive yawn over took her causing the girl to stop what she was doing and cover her mouth. Sighing again Rini brushed her teeth lazily, rinsed, then crossed over to her bed and fell onto. Without bothering to adjust herself into to a more comfortable position, the tired weather manipulator fell fast asleep. The hours ticked away slowly at first, then gained momentum until the moon was shining high above in the night sky. Serinity jerked awake, lines from her pillow caused creases in her face. Her right hand reached out for the alarm clock on her bedside trying to find the time. 11:46pm. The girl yawned and laid her head back down to catch some more Zs.
Suddenly, Rini was out of the bed with a yelp. “Oh my god I’m late! I over slept! Crap, crap, CRAP!” she yelled with surprise rushing around the room to gather clothes to wear. Wait. The young woman stopped short staring at the empty space where her dresser was supposed to be. “The hell…” she muttered with a tilt of her head. Grey blue eyes scanned the rest of the room. Panic began to set in. “Where the hell is all my stuff?! Alex! ALEX! Where is my stuff?!?!” Angrily, the girl strode over to the door to yank it open. There was no handle. Serinity’s fingers grasped nothing but thin air. Stepping back Rini swallowed hard. What kind of prank was this? Her eyes cast around the room again taking in everything with a new mindset. Grey. Everything was grey. Her walls, her bed, her blanket, her floor, her door, her other bed. Everything was a dingy grey. “What is going on?!” she whispered fiercely looking at the mysterious other bed, then down at her clothing. Instead of her comfortable panda pants pjs, Rini now wore a dull grey pants with a matching top. There was nothing distinguishing about the clothing. It was just like the rest of the room. Boring.
In a last ditched effort, Rini flung herself against the door with all her might. It didn’t move. Her fist swung out beating against the solid metal causing echoes to reverberate within the near empty room. “Hello?! What’s going on?! Where am I?!” She shut her mouth waiting for a response. There was noise on the other side of the door. Faint, but there. “Hello?” She called again. No one replied. The door didn’t open. The background noise behind the doors continued with no change. All her life, Serinity Dawson had felt alone; but, she had always been surrounded by people. Here in this room there was no one. She was truly, in every sense of the word – alone.
Tears welled up in Serinity’s eyes. Angrily she wiped them away. Why was she crying? That was so silly. This was just a dream. Yeah, that was it! It was just a dream. Almost laughing, the blonde closed her eyes tightly and pinched her arm hard. “OW!” she yelped. That hurt a lot more than she had intended. Slowly, hesitantly she opened her eyes. Nothing had changed. She was still staring at the cold metal door to her locked room. Disheartened the blonde sat down on her bed so close to sobbing. “What’s going on?” she whispered softly wincing.
Soon after, she had curled up on her bed. Time went by so slowly like it had done in class yesterday. Or had she gone to class yesterday? Wait, what? Of course she had gone to class yesterday! Meticulously Rini went through the day’s events. As soon as she thought of the simulator class, the girl shot up and smirked. “That’s it! This is just a simulation. Duh, Rini.” Laughing, the girl sang out, “Okay!~ I figured it out; you can stop the simulation now!~” Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Serinity looked around. “This isn’t funny anymore. End the simulation! Please!” Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
Knock knock knock. Serinity jumped her eyes flashing toward the door. Slowly she stood crossing her arms over her chest. “Who’s there?” she replied uncertainly.
A key was inserted into a lock on the outside of the door. On the other side, the handle turned and the door opened. “Hello, Serinity. How are you today?” A woman dressed in a white nurse’ outfit stepped in looking expectantly at the girl. Silence passed between the two.
Serinity eyed her. “Who are you… Where am I? What’s going on?!” The tone of her voice rose with each question. She took a step forward. The nurse, in turn, took a step back.
“Now, now dear. I don’t want to have to call the doctors. You be good, ok.” The lady put up her hands signaling she wanted no trouble. “It’s me Wanda. I’m here to change your sheets like I do ever Friday. Head on out to the drawing room, Rini. Be a good girl now.” There was a pleasant, patient smile upon the lady’s lips.
The blonde’s heart almost leaped into her throat. “What are you talking about? Doctors?! What doctors. Answer my questions!” She took another step forward her hand rising as if to grab the woman’s wrist. The nurse stepped back into the hallway calling down to another person.
“George! George! Could you please escort Ms. Dawson here to the drawing room?” There was a reply which Rini couldn’t hear. Confused, she stood where she was uncertain of what to do. George, a rather burly man dressed in green scrubs, entered the room. “Thank you, George.” The man nodded in reply and placed a hand on Serinity’s should.
The girl snarled and shrugged him off. “Don’t touch me!” Rini backed up against the wall behind her, eyes vicious. She was a cornered animal now. Confused and cornered.
“Might need the Doc for this one…” the guy said trailing off looking at Rini guardedly. “Seems she’s relapsing again.”
What were these people talking about?! The two strangers left closing the door behind them. Wildly, Rini flew to the door to catch it before it closed. She was too late. It was closed and locked once more. “Damnit!” the girl screamed pounding against the door.
A couple of minutes later, the door opened again. A familiar, grandmotherly figure strode in. The white lab coat she wore swished forward when the older woman stopped checking her clipboard. “What seems to be the problem, Serinity? The staff tells me you don’t remember where you are again. Is that true?” Lillian looked up from her board with a sincerely worried look.
Flabbergasted, Serinity was speechless. Moments later she gathered up her wits and spoke. The bewilderment was evident in her voice. “Grandmother?! What’s going on… I don’t understand... Why are you dressed like a doctor?” Rini took a couple of steps toward Lillian wanting to be comforted, wanting to comprehend the situation. Everything was wrong. Nothing was making sense!
The doctor scowled scribbling quick notes on her paper sheets. Serinity swallowed with difficulty as her eyes followed the pen’s movement. “Serinity, my dear. You’re at Silas Asylum. You’ve been a patient here since you were a child. I’m afraid I’m not your grandmother, either. You have no family. My name is Doctor Palmer. Do you remember now?”
Serinity’s heart literally stopped. Literally stopped. The grey walls suddenly closed in on her cutting her breath short leaving her gasping for air. She clutched at her chest sliding down against the wall behind her. Her breaths were ragged, wheezing. “No, that’s not true! This is Silas Academy! You’re my grandmother! You’re the only family I have! Stop lying to me!” Serinity grabbed her head and shook it back and forth not wanting to hear these lies. She wasn’t crazy and she most certainly did not live in an insane institute! A sudden bright light shone in the girl’s eyes blazing with a fiery passion. “I’m Gifted! I’ll show you. I’m a weather manipulator.” This would be easy. With all these mixed emotions swirling through Serinity’s mind, calling up a storm would be a piece of cake.
The asylum’s patient stood tall completely confident in her ability. Her grey blue eyes focused on the calm sky outside the room’s window. A bead of sweat formed upon her brow soon falling down her cheek as she concentrated intently. The doctor, nurse, and orderly looked at each other with concerned expressions. Clearly, their patient was deranged. “Serinity, dear, you’re not a weather manipulator. You never have been. You’re just an average girl, like everyone else.” Lillian smiled at Rini with what she assumed was supposed to be “comforting” smile. The blonde clenched her jaw.
“You’re lying! You’re a can detect Lies! I know you can, grandmamma please!” By now, Serinity’s voice fell into desperation. Surging forward the blonde grasped at the doctor’s lab coat. The tears she had kept back for so long streamed down her reddened cheeks. “Please!” The girl cried in despair, “Why are you doing this to me. Why are you lying to me.”
Lillian gasped at the contact struggling to free herself from the crazy patient’s grip. George strode forward and roughly grabbed Serinity’s waist from behind. “Come on, sweetheart. Let’s get you a little something to calm you down, eh?” The guy pulled a syringe from his breast pocket uncapping it with skilled practice. With one hand he removed the air from inside the medicine and jabbed it into Serinity’s arm. “There there, darling, just calm down. Everything’s going to be ok.”
Rini’s face contorted in pain as her hands slipped from her lying grandmother’s coat. “No…” she weakly breathed. The nurse, whom had disappeared, suddenly returned with a wheelchair. The orderly gingerly placed the girl into it and strapped her in so that she wouldn’t fall out. Lillian adjusted her coat clearing her throat.
“George, take her to the drawing room like planned. Set her by the windows. Maybe the view will help.” Although a little unnerved, Lillian didn’t seem to show it. Dealing with people like Serinity day after day for years had caused her to grow a thick skin to the sad illnesses of the crazies. The orderly nodded and began to wheel Serinity down onto Silas’ ground floor as the nurse went about her job cleaning up the room. It was just a typical day at Silas Asylum.
