Brief Summary:
Kato is tired of living like a criminal; he doesn't want to see the inside of a prison ever again, nor does he want to clash with anymore cops. He's done with stealing, drug use, and hiding from authority. But while the ex-con has tried his best to reform, he still has his slip ups. Kato is not an angel. He's not a sweetheart. All he wants to be is... nice by his standards. For the most part he's laid back with a fine sense of humor, but prison has left a mark or two on the young boy; he always gets even. You push him, and he'll push back twice as hard. And with a sharp and sarcastic tongue, Kato is bound to leave his adversaries twisting and squirming.
Amongst other unsavory traits, Kato has a small green monster buried in his chest; jealously. When he was younger, he often questioned and brooded over why other people got nice things while he was barely scraping the barrel. It was because of these questions that he took to stealing what he could not own. And even though he has taken to a more reformed nature, Kato occasionally undergoes the same troubling thoughts regarding his possessions. Such thoughts often leave his day gloomy and bitter.
But when he's in a good mood, Kato can be a pleasant friend to have; he's steel tongued but loyal, never one to snitch on a fellow buddy. Snitches wind up in ditches, after all. Kato is more than willing to joke around with friends, host a bonfire, or just go out for a good time. Now if he could only control those stupid, impulsive urges that so often plagued his early life.
Power Description »As an ink manipulator, Kato can control ink at will; this includes moving ink (be it in text, skin, or in a liquid form), molding ink to form 3D shapes, and changing the color of ink with immense concentration. He cannot, however, generate said ink on his own accord. Kato also has a bad habit of wrecking pens via ink explosion; he hopes to fix that eventually.
History »
Kato was born to the Zimmerman family as their fourth child amongst a family of nine; he lived with his parents, two brothers (Dominic and Sean), three sisters (Paige, and the twins - Hailey and Hannah), and his grandmother. They barely squeezed into their three bedroom, two bathroom house in the innermost parts of Baltimore, Maryland. The parents slept in one room, while the their six children shared two bedrooms based on gender. Grandma Gabby enjoyed the luxury of her own room out of the family's respect for their elders. Besides, she might have rampaged the whole house like a hurricane had she not gotten her own room... quite literally. Kato's grandmother was the oldest member of their family to have a power: weather manipulation. Sean too developed a similar power, but limited to only controlling water. It appeared that as one moved down the ranks of Zimmerman children, their powers became less and less impressive. Hannah could talk with animals and Kato eventually developed his power of ink manipulation. Yes, ink control... whoop-dee-doo; he rewrote his homework assignment three times before he realized the smudging ink was not because of a faulty pen. The remaining three children - Paige, Dominic, and Hailey - had no powers.
A family of nine - four of the whom were super human freaks - all shoved into one small house; the question prodding many regarded how on earth the Zimmerman parents kept track of it all. For the most part, they didn't. While they did manage to scrape up enough money to provide for their family via various odd jobs, Kato's parents could rarely give all of their kids the attention they required. It only made sense that many of their kids landed in trouble or followed the wrong crowd. Sean and Hailey generally stayed out of trouble, but both Dominic and Hannah began participating in mild drug use, smoking, and drinking. Some of their habits began to drift to Paige - the youngest of the family - when she was only eleven years old. Kato, thirteen at the time, also began to take part in a more elevated sort of trouble making.
It was only petty theft at first. He'd steal someone's jacket, a lunch box, or maybe their decorated pencil; it wasn't fair that they could have nice things while his family barely scraped by. He was a happy child, but often times jealous of more privileged children. So he became a kind of... robin hood; stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor - his family - while still keeping under his parents' radar. Kato knew what he was doing wasn't ethical, but he provided himself with enough childlike reasons to avoid most of the guilt. As the years progressed, the now seventeen year old began to steal more valuable items; jewelry, watches, and even an Ipod or two. Soon enough he moved outside of the school to attempt his biggest heist yet: a local convenience store.
With his father's hand gun shoved into the pocket of his hoodie, Kato approached the store at 2 am. He fidgeted with his hands and scrunched up the hockey mask. After almost twenty minutes of building up the guts to go through with it, the teenager slipped the mask over his face and rushed into the store. "Gimme all the money!" He swung the hand gun in the cashier's direction - funny, the man looked almost bored with the concept of being robbed at gun point - and motioned towards the register. Slowly and carefully, the cashier pulled out dollar bills and set them onto the counter. The complete opposite of the collected man before him, Kato shoved the money into his pockets and made a break for the door. He sped away in his family's beat up mini van with the license plate covered. By 3 am the police would be on his tail.
Kato had just reached his neighborhood when he took notice of the lights flashing in his rear view mirror; he thought his heard would explode. The teenager - now scared out of his mind - stomped his foot on the gas. He led police on a high speed chase.. and through his residential neighborhood. But when a stray dog stepped into the road, Kato's foot shifted from the gas to the break. He swerved. He drifted. He crashed. The car flipped over twice and slowed to a crunching stop. The police were sure that Kato was dead, but through some miracle - and well deployed air bags - the teen survived with merely a broken leg. The paramedics drove him to the hospital in handcuffs.
After fixing up his leg at the hospital, Kato was questioned by police while his mother weeped in the hallway. Soon enough his dad showed up to chew him out while his siblings conversed anxiously and paced about in the waiting room. With security cameras and several witnesses, it didn't take long for the police to charge him with armed robbery and resisting arrest. Within a month or so, Kato's trial took place. The evidence was easily collected, and soon enough Kato was sentenced to serve one year at a juvenile correction facility. His mother's wails filled the court room as Kato was whisked away through the doors.
The first time he pulled on that orange jumpsuit, he felt as if he had received a death sentence. The first time the barred door slammed shut, he wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. He didn't though. Kato was from a rough enough neighborhood to know what happened to cry babies in prison, even if it was only juvie. Instead, he clammed up, laid down on his bed, and fantasized about the Shawshank Redemption: if only...
During the first few months of his incarceration, Kato was quiet, sullen, and bitter. He lashed out at those who tried to approach him. He wanted to be a badass. Untouchable. He even dared to threaten other members of the jail, even the teachers sent to teach him and the other sentenced children. Kato kept up this tough guy persona for several months... until he received a devastating letter from his parents; Paige, his darling fifteen year old sister, had overdosed on ecstasy and was pronounced dead that morning. He felt his heart stop. So... she followed me, he thought. He was... sick. At least he felt horribly ill. Oh maybe they would just put him down like the dog he was! Horribly mislead dog! He cried that day in front of several prisoners. And he didn't care.
He refused to talk to anyone for almost a month, preferring to wallow around in his own misery. But with more time to reflect on his own mistakes, Kato came to an epiphany; he had to reform. He couldn't be mister tough guy. He couldn't go back to being a complete miscreant. But he could - and he had to - change his life around for the better. His sister deserved that much. So day by day, Kato improved; he stopped provoking other inmates, chatted with the guards, and gave his teachers little trouble. He did a full 180. The day before his eighteenth birthday, he was released on account of good behavior. Paige - he thought - would be proud.
Kato set out his plans upon leaving the jail; he would finish up his education, get a job, save up his money, and... get laid. Yeah, he really needed some down and dirty action. Having been locked away for several months with no females in sight, Kato was lusting after every boobs-on-a-stick that passed by. But his sleazy intentions were put on hold when his mother came to him with an announcement regarding himself, Sean, and Hannah; they were signed up to attend Silas Academy. "Say what?" According to the ex-con's parents, he and his two siblings were in need of better guidance regarding their powers. Kato could sense some other intentions - sending the siblings away would allow their parents to focus on the other two, thus giving all of the kids a chance at a better life - but he didn't mind. To be honest, Kato was eager to attend Silas; he figured this was the perfect way to begin reforming his lifestyle. Now if only he could get rid of those lusty urges pricking his skin...
Yumi - a sexy, spunky Asian girl - provided just the release he needed. He was on a road trip with his older brother and sister to Silas Academy when he met Yumi. They had stopped for gas, and it was Kato's turn to fill up the tank this time around. He had just hopped out of the car when he spotted a girl - close to his age - filling up her own car. She was gorgeous... and even if she wasn't too great of a sight, Kato wouldn't have cared. He craved sex, women, anything with breasts! After shoving the gas nozzle into Sean's hands, the ex-con advanced towards the female with hasty swagger and charm. They talked. They touched. They winked. They found themselves in a gas station restroom, limbs wrapped around each other. Kato was amazed how willing she was to drop her panties for a stranger, but he wasn't complaining. When asked if he had protection on, Kato hurriedly replied yes, but he was lying. The teen wanted nothing more than to get in Yumi's pants, even if it meant going in without protection.
Had he known such an immature decision would later land him with an unexpected child... Kato most certainly would have zipped his pants back up. But the deed was done, and his siblings were impatiently waiting in the car. The eighteen year old quickly groomed himself, straightened up his clothes, and hurried back to the car after a brief good bye to Yumi. Kato and his family once more set down the road to Silas, unaware that he and Yumi would cross paths once again.
