Brief Summary:
Ever spontaneous and with little regard for the consequences of her actions, Hannah often finds herself at odds with the law and with what is considered “acceptable behavior.” The concept of “thinking before doing” is a ridiculous notion to her, and those that seek to instill her with this bit of wisdom will find that that they’ve only wasted their breath. All of the “what ifs” that come with forethought, all of the time spent worrying and hesitating simply saps all the fun out of everything. Hannah thrives off of the thrill of new experiences and stepping into uncharted territories. She is always pushing her boundaries, trying out new drugs, looking for the ones that bring her entirely new sensations. This often results in her getting completely hammered, saying and doing the most ridiculous things, and overall making a complete mess of herself. For those that trouble themselves with looking down on her with condescension, she only has one answer for them, and it can be found between her index and ring fingers.
But with the self-righteous belittlers aside, Hannah is, for the most part, tolerant of people from all walks of life. It’s her belief that everyone has a right to live their life in the way they want, to do what they will with the time that they have, even if that means going behind the law and the norms of society. Although she is amiable to most, she much prefers the company of those with a similar mindset to hers when it comes to having fun. Getting wasted and partying is much more enjoyable when you’re with the right people, and Hannah is all about getting the maximum experience. Speaking of experiences, drugs aren't the only things she enjoys experimenting with. She also loves trying new things between the sheets and is quite liberal with whom. Though she prefers the company of males, she has found that she also enjoys the touch of another woman.
There is but one person who could make Hannah feel guilty for her activities, and that is her older brother, Sean. Hannah saw how Sean had changed following Paige’s death, and realized then that Sean felt more responsible for their wellbeing than their parents did. In the weeks following the tragedy, Hannah did her best to stay sober. But her resolve was weak to begin with and she soon reverted back to her usual behavior, though she did put some effort into concealing it from Sean. When it comes to her younger brother, Hannah is much less concerned about secrecy; in fact, she often tries to drag Kato into her activities. She’s noticed how serving time has changed Kato, made him more careful and quite frankly, boring. A small part of her, the sisterly part, is glad because she’d hate to see him thrown back behind bars again. But the dominant, selfish, and carefree part of her wants her old brother back.
Power Description »
Hannah’s abilities are vastly underdeveloped and hardly of any use to her, mostly because she never bothers to improve them. There have been occasions where she unintentionally put someone under a weak state of hypnosis, but the occurrences are random and beyond her control. When under the influence of her powers, a person will become focused on her whether they wish to or not, though the intensity of their focus depends on how much her powers are developed. When she gains full control of her powers, any peripheral thoughts or distractions a person may have are ignored and they easily fall under her influence, answering truthfully any questions she asks and following any commands she gives. The length of time and strength of her influence also depends on how advanced her powers are.
History »
Being born into a large family with little income has shaped Hannah into the woman she is today. No, she didn’t look on with sorrow as her parents struggled to put clothes on their backs and food on the table. No, growing up in poverty with next to no parental guidance did not compel her to work hard so that she may have a better life. Instead, she took advantage of the freedom she was given. With her parents always out working odd jobs in the city, Hannah learned at an early age that there was no one to stop her from doing what she wanted. And to this day, Hannah lives by that same bit of knowledge.
From an early age, Hannah hated the dingy and cramped up hole they lived in and called home and often found herself wondering around outside in their little rundown neighborhood. Overtime she became friends with many of the other kids in their part of town, attending school with them for the next several years. Early on their activities were innocent, mostly just games of “drive by” or “cops and robbers.” But as they moved into junior high, the games became more serious. There were drinking games played with the alcohol they pooled together by stealing from their parents’ stash. Games of truth or dare were also not uncommon.
During her freshman year of high school, Hannah attended her first party, thrown by some jock after their school’s homecoming game. She was a little nervous at first, worried that she’d make a fool out of herself in front of the upperclassmen. But two of her best friends would be there too and they’d watch over her and keep her in line, right? The minute they stepped into the house, blaring with music and filled with practically the entire student body, all of her worries vanished. It wasn’t long before she found herself dancing, drink in hand, with some hot football player who was already wasted. A couple songs and another cup of alcohol-spiked punch later, she found her lips pressed to some other guy’s as they swayed to the music in a quiet corner of the house.
Hours passed like minutes, and after four cups of spiked punch and even more shots of vodka, Hannah was completely tanked. She could have stopped herself then, searched for her friends and headed home. But the hot football player she danced with, who introduced himself as Jake, had something for her to try. She coughed a little as she took a drag from the joint, but soon discovered that she liked the sensations it brought her. Soon enough, Hannah’s head was swimming in all the alcohol she drank and the weed she smoked. Although the room felt as if it was spinning, she felt incredibly relaxed and euphoric. At some point she and Jake left the party, and all she could remember was stumbling about in the grassy lawn, holding Jake’s arm for support.
The next morning she woke up in the backseat of an SUV to the sound of an utterly furious woman yelling at her to get out of her car. In all her life Hannah has never experienced a situation more shocking than what she had discovered when she woke up that morning. Who was this woman screaming in her face? Where was she? What had happened after she and Jake left the party? It didn’t take long for her to put two and two together, and in a trance like state she climbed out of the car and took the long walk home. She and Jake had gone too far, apparently in someone else’s car, and he left her sometime in the night without a word.
For days she lay in her bed in shame, ignoring her sisters in the room she shared with them. How could she let something like that happen? The night had been so much fun, and Jake had seemed so… nice. What should she do if she saw him again? Wait, what if she got pregnant?! All of these thoughts plagued the young girl’s mind until finally, she had a thought that changed her entire perspective on what had happened. What worse could she do now? Why bother regretting everything when she enjoyed so much of it? So what if the thing with Jake wasn’t what she wanted, she should quit feeling sorry for herself and get back to having fun.
And during the next couple of years Hannah lived as carefree a life as ever. She attended house parties and raves, got wasted and had fun trying new drugs. And often times she’d wake up the next morning in some man’s bed, or car. With every night she went out came new experiences, new sensations, and new people. She even began to see some of her siblings letting loose at the parties she went to. Although it was a little discomforting at first, she felt that she was in no position to keep them from partaking in the thrills she so loved.
As awful as it was to see her younger brother incarcerated, it did nothing to deter her from being involved in illicit activities. And apparently, neither did it for their other siblings. During Hannah’s last year of high school, she partied harder and more frequently than she had ever before. In fact, when she thinks back on senior year, all that comes to her mind is loud music, dark cramped rooms filled with people, and the smell of sweat, alcohol, and weed. There is one other memory from her last year of high school, one that will haunt her for the rest of her life.
The rave had started out just as all the others Hannah had been to before; she got drunk and high and danced with a number of inebriated males until she ultimately ended up playing tonsil hockey with one of them in a dark corner of the venue. Much to her dismay, that had only lasted a few minutes, until some annoying little sophomore came along, screeching hardly discernible words over the loud music. After a few more attempts by the poor girl, Hannah finally understood two words, “Paige” and “bathroom.” At first she brushed it off, Paige was a lightweight and always drank more than she could hold down. Why must she be in attendance as her younger sister spewed the contents of her stomach into the toilet? But as wasted as Paige’s little friend was, she was persistent and wouldn’t leave until Hannah reluctantly pulled away from the gorgeous fellow and followed her.
Hannah nearly tripped over Paige’s limp body as she entered the dingy bathroom, her breath catching in her throat as she knelt down next to her sister. She was curled up on the floor, her arms tightly clutching her chest as she struggled to breathe. No, this couldn’t be happening. What should she do? Without another thought Hannah dialed Sean’s number, breaking down at the sound of his sleepy voice on the other end, telling him where they were, that their baby sister was dying. By the time the call ended, Paige had stopped breathing, and by the time Sean arrived, she was gone.
In the following weeks, Hannah found it extremely difficult to be anywhere near home and the room she shared with Paige all these years. But at the same time, she wanted to be where Sean would know she was safe, he didn’t need any more stress on her behalf. Hannah was clean for nearly two months after the tragic night, not even smoking so much as a cigarette or drinking a drop of alcohol. But the guilt of her contribution to Paige’s death gnawed a hole in her that Hannah only knew of one way to fill. And so she fell back into her old habits, but did her best to conceal it from Sean and the rest of her family. Not that she was sure that the rest of her family cared; her mother nearly threw her out of the house when she got back from the hospital, after saying goodbye to the lifeless body that once held her daughter. And her father hardly ever spoke a word to her since then.
When her mother coldly threw a brochure for Silas Academy on the table in front of her and told her to pack her bags, Hannah nearly cried in gratitude for the escape. Sure, it’d be much harder to get her hands on her favorite substances, but she’d set up her connections over time. Anywhere else would be better than here. With just her recently freed younger brother and her ever loving older brother, Hannah bid farewell to the only place she’d ever known. Her only worry was that Kato would somehow discover that she was with Paige at the time of the incident, that she failed as an older sister in the worst way possible. With practically everyone else in the family wishing it were she who had died instead of Paige, Hannah couldn’t stand the idea of Kato hating her too.
