Brief Summary:

Despite Kia's ability triggered by touching people or things, she's a happy girl that was raised to respect her elders, do her best in whatever she puts her mind to, and that everyone deserves love. Because she grew up in a very religious home, she tends to have the same kind of religious outlook on the world and people around her. If you ask her, besides her family (especially her parents), it's the religion thing that has helped her keep her positive attitude even in the face of what her power puts her through.

Although she doesn't like to touch them for fear of what she might see or the headache it might give her, she loves being around people and talking with them--as long as it isn't a ridiculous amount of people. She hates having to wear clothes that tend to cover up most of her skin--and definitely in the hot season--but it's a necessary evil when everyone or everything she touches with her skin could give her unwanted flashes.

Kia's the kind of girl that likes to look on the bright side of things and likes to look for the best in people, too. She's a strong girl that will stand up for what she believes in. She's smart and typically does very well at whatever she decides to do. She likes to make others laugh and you'll rarely see in her in a bad or depressed mood. At her old school, before coming to Silas, she was referred to as the bully of the bullies because she's always had a hard time sitting by and watching someone be unjustly treated. That's just the way she is.

Power Description »

Kia's power is touch based. By touching a person and/or object she can receive visions--flashes, really--of the history of that particular person and/or object. Since she doesn't have much control over it at all, she's never quite sure when she'll receive those flashes. Those flashes can be a super fast vague slideshow of the person's or object's history which tend to leave Kia confused with a jumble of images in her head that she usually can't even make sense of. Other times, those flashes are more focused to a specific time or event in the person's or object's history.

History »

Kia was raised in a loving, if not strict, religious home. Her parents, David and Karen Bailey, were both devout Christians and often had leadership positions in their church. Kia remembers going to church every Sunday growing up with all of her other siblings. Being the oldest of five, she often had a lot of responsibility thrown on her from the very beginning. Her parents taught her to work hard from an early age and that there was no point in doing something unless you did your very best at it.

It wasn't until she was 12 that her power began to manifest itself, coinciding with her slightly late puberty (at least slightly late where the majority of girls are concerned). For the first year or two, it started out a sporadic thing that would only happen every once in a while and would give her headaches afterward. Not sure what was going on, she finally broke down and talked to her mom about it... and discovered that her mother was clairvoyant. No wonder she always seemed to know every time one of her children was going to do something incredibly stupid. She also learned that her father was an empath. Both her parents were mutants and expected all of their children to manifest the gene eventually. Both of her parents were also graduates of Silas academy. That's where they met and fell in love, after all.

They didn't send her to Silas at first because Kia wanted to stay at her own school with her own friends. She didn't have any desire to be sent all the way across the country to Vermont, of all places, to go to a school for people like her. She wanted to pretend that she was normal. However, that wasn't in the cards for her because as she neared her 16th birthday, her power began to spiral out of control until it was almost as if anything and anyone she happened to touch, or even brush up against, caused visions to flash in her mind. It became so bad that even she couldn't deny that she needed professional help with it.

Seeing as how her parents had taught her everything they knew, it was decided that she'd go to Silas--away from the surfing and the beach she loved--where there were people there who dealt directly with helping people learn to control what they could do. Kia decided she wanted that because she wanted to be able to touch people again without worrying what she would see. She just wanted to be able to live her life without always having to worry that if she touched something or someone she would be forced to see something she probably didn't want to, or should, see. So, after her 16th birthday, she was sent to Silas and has been there for almost half a year now.
