Brief Summary:
Damian is stunningly quiet; an observer on the best of days. This is not so much because he has nothing to say, as he's not sure how to say it. He worries about saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, or to the wrong person, and often just refuses to say anything to anyone. When he does speak, he is usually soft-spoken, despite the fact that he knows it bothers some people. If someone manages to draw him out of his shell, Damian tends to attach to that person, staying with the known person any time there's a crowd. Meeting new people makes him nervous because, once upon a time, he felt he could tell a lot about people by the looks on their faces. Now he's afraid he'll miss the warning signs and end up being used or hurt.
Even so, Damian hates it when people treat him like he's helpless. He doesn't like being blind, but at the moment can't remember not being that way, so he feels he's adjusted well enough. Because he's so stubborn in that thought, he refuses to ask for help, even when he really needs it.
Power Description »Damian has the ability to control the air around him. Since he can't see anymore, his brain has learned to interpret that instead, and he uses it much the same way bats use sonar.
History »
Damian has amnesia and cannot remember any of this.
He was born as the middle child to a blue collar worker and his wife in Barna Ireland, not far from the city of Galway. Both his siblings were brothers, and as such he grew up in a rowdy house. His mother was a good woman, calm in the face of everything, and Damian loved her. He was her shadow, dogging her footsteps around the house and always first to volunteer to go with her wherever she was going. It ended up being his downfall.
When he was in sixth grade, he met Donovan Wright. Donovan was the first evil person Damian had ever met. Really evil, too, not just pushing kids down in the parking lot and thinking it was funny. At first the bullying was relatively harmless - name-calling and insults, pushing, sometimes bruises that he had to explain away to his mom and brothers. When he came home with half his face swollen, his older brother Neil worked the story out of him. Neil was outraged and confronted Donovan, making the bigger boy back off of Damian for a while. But he eventually came back with a vengeance. He jumped Damian on the way home from school, and gave him the first of many scars - a long one across Damian's lower back. The scar was accompanied by a promise to do the same to Damian's mother if he ever said anything.
For the next three years Damian endured much of the same. He managed to excuse some of the cuts, and to hide the others. His family noticed the differences in his behavior, he became quiet and spent more time in his room and the house in general. No matter how they pushed him, though, they could never get the story. Damian was too scared that Donovan would follow up on his promise - had seen too much proof that he would.
It's likely that Donovan's torture would have gone to the point of eventually killing Damian, had it not been for the day Damian got staked. Donovan taped the smaller boy's eyes open and tied him spread-eagle on the ground, forcing him to stare at the sun. It was hours before his brothers found him, and his vision had long since been burned out. They rushed him to the hospital, but were told the doctors could do nothing to help him.
Damian discovered his powers slowly through the course of the next year. He spent a great deal of time sitting on the porch in a state of depression, with nothing but the gentle touch of the wind. It was gradually that he began feel almost like part of the wind...that the soft breath was an immediate, total comfort. The fact that he could move the wind came as a surprise. He was in his normal spot on the porch, listening to his mother inside and his brothers in the yard. The younger brother, Paul, had not done well hiding the fact that he didn't like how Damian was handling it. It seemed he was fed up, for he confronted Damian, telling him he was going to have to get up and move on eventually. The longer Damian ignored him, the more frustrated Paul got and the angrier he made Damian. Finally, Damian jumped to his feet and tried to shove his brother. He hadn't realized how far away his brother was - at least three feet past Damian's reach - and there was no way he could hit him. Paul flew off the porch, however, shoved by a powerful blast of wind.
Damian was just as frightened by his power as was his family, and he agreed that he wouldn't use it again. For a while he was successful, though he could always feel the air around him and how it moved. It helped him to learn to move around without needing a cane or a dog, and for that he was grateful. While feeling the wind could help, it wasn't enough. Eventually Damian felt like he had to try more. His parents caught him in his room one day, floating several inches off the floor. They argued, and Damian ran off that night.
For three years he traveled around, receiving help mostly from Good Sumerians taking pity on a blind boy. He got a plane to America, where he eventually let his parents know he was alright (though he refused to return home where he felt he wasn't understood). He decided he'd learn to control his power completely before he went back. On his twentieth birthday, he was traveling south on a bus through Vermont when it lost control and went off the road.
Damian was left in a coma that lasted nearly a year. When he finally awoke, he couldn't remember anything. The doctors could tell him only his name and basic information - age, birth-date and -place. The hospital was willing to let him stay and recuperate - on top of causing amnesia, the wreck had torn up Damian's right leg so badly he could barely walk - right up until they found out about his powers. As soon as that was discovered - Damian made a small tornado in the hospital room - he was sedated and shipped off to Silas. (One of the doctors knew someone who knew someone who had gone there.)
Whether Silas can help him or not is yet to be seen.
