Matthias Flynn had decided to spend the beautiful Saturday afternoon in town. Well, late afternoon considering he'd slept in till about one pm. Clad in baggy shorts with too many pockets, a webcomic related t-shirt, and his favorite pair of vans, he'd grabbed his backpack and board and headed out the door. Now he was rolling through town, blankly staring at the various store fronts and mentally kicking himself for not inviting someone to come alone. Hindsight was a terrible thing. He'd been so excited for the chance to escape school grounds for a while that he'd completely overlooked his need for company.
Ah well. It was a nice day out so chances were he'd run into somebody he knew at some point. Maybe Kathryn would be around to bother; she did spend a lot of her time trying to be places where he wasn't. And if they ran into each other now she wouldn't be able to accuse him of following her because he had his skateboard! He'd ridden the whole way into town, no teleportation necessary. But as he skated past the crowded cafe he saw no sign of her and continued on. Maybe he could make a new friend instead. Given the amount of people he had to weave through depending on which street he turned down, somehow had to be willing to chat. Not everyone around here was a self-absorbed asshat.
Reaching the end of the main strip, Matty sighed and turned around figuring he might as well roll back down it. Even his cellphone was being too quiet for its own good. By now one of his friends should have texted him (unless they were all still asleep which was highly possible all things considered). Careful to not accidentally crash into some fat lady coming out of one the store fronts he propelled himself forward, boredom written clearly in his eyes. Matthias was missing the hustle and bustle of city living, homesick and wishing for something to do.

[/div] dance is life, Jasmine Tanner strolled through the small coffee shop, cup in hand, trying not to bump into anyone. There were a surprising number of people inside the establishment this morning, come to get their caffiene fix. It wasn't something Jasmine usually did, but she wanted the extra kick today. As easy as breathing, she knew what each of them were feeling. The somber man in the back was guilty, tired, and upset over something. The cashier at the counter was suspicious and sullen. There was one woman in particular sitting by the windows that, for a moment, Jasmine didn't believe was feeling anything at all. When she passed the girl to exit the shop, she noticed that the redhead was asleep with her head bent over the morning newspaper.
It was easier for Jasmine to cope in the mornings, when everyone was groggy and just waking up. The feelings that she got from others were muted and seemed slower to reach her. It allowed her more freedom to revel in her own feelings, instead of fighting of everyone else's issues. She shook her head and adjusted the bag over her shoulder as it started to slip down her arm. This was not a morning to think about what her life was like. This was a morning to get some juice in her system and enjoy herself before heading back to Silas. Time away from the Academy was precious and she enjoyed every minute of it she got. It wasn't that she didn't feel at home at the school, but sometimes she just needed to get away from the twisting halls, teachers, and classrooms. Luckily, her first class tomorrow was dance which she was looking forward to with gusto.
According to Jasmine, dancing was life. It was her relief, her joy, and her reason for existing. Without it she didn't know what she'd do. When she was dancing, everything in her mind got quiet, almost as if her powers didn't exist. But that wasn't true. It seemed her powers were always in the "on" position and she hadn't been able to find a way to shut them off. It didn't really bother her, as she didn't know any different. Indeed, she often pulled from other people's emotions when she danced, using their feelings to fuel her movements; using their passions. Tilting her head back with a smile, she felt the morning air on her face as she closed her eyes. There was so much going on in the minds around her, but she didn't pay it any mind as she reopened her eyes and stepped from the shop onto the sidewalk.
She was nearly overcome with a sense of boredom which she didn't have time to wonder about as a split second later, she was nearly plowed over by a red-headed guy on a skateboard. "Hey!" Her tone was somewhat indignant, but it was simple reflex as she nearly spilled hot coffee all down her front. She managed to save it, thankfully, but some splashed scaldingly on her hand. Sticking the offended thumb in her mouth, she glared at the guy before softening a bit. She couldn't really hold hard feelings against someone who was that bored. It almost made her want to yawn and go back to bed and she had to remind herself that those weren't her feelings. "If you wanted coffee that bad, all you had to do was ask, you know?" She raised a single eyebrow at him with a quirk of her lips.

Something behind him caught his attention, and in the thirty seconds he'd taken his eyes off of where he was going, disaster struck. His head turned back just in time to see a girl a little older than his age exiting the coffee shop. He was headed right for her! If he didn't act fast, he was going to crash right into her.
Throwing his weight opposite curb side, he swerved rather carelessly and ending up hitting a small cafe table instead. His board went sailing a few feet on its own before a lamp post stopped it. He himself had one hand on the empty table, supporting his weight while the other massaged his stomach where he'd hit. The pain was worth it though. It meant he hadn't just flattened a pretty, older woman.
He took a minute to catch his breath and then ambled over to grab the renegade skateboard. He stepped on one end of the deck, grabbing the other with his hands and securing his prize beneath his arm. Then he turned to make his way back to the girl, apology written all over his face. His free hand pushed naturally red bangs out of his face, more an attempt to hide his embarrassment than it was to clear his vision.
Her glare at first made him shrink a little, but she managed to make the first comment. Matty almost breathed a sigh of relief when suddenly she smiled. If she was smiling, then she must have been okay. Right? He would ask just to make sure, but he did manage to let his own weak smile form on his lips. "Real sorry about that. Are you okay? I uh, kinda didn't see you there." His laugh was just as weak as his smile and he didn't want to meet her eyes.

[/div] dance is life, Jasmine watched as the kid rubbed his stomach and picked up his skateboard. She took him in with her eyes and her powers at the same time now that they weren't crashing into one another. He was younger than her by a couple years if she had her guess and she was fairly certain his red hair was natural. Come to think of it, she didn't know one sane male who would willingly dye his hair that color on purpose. He was also so overcome with embarrassment that even Jasmine's cheeks flared a bit. She was a bit ashamed, herself, so she couldn't seperate the two feelings. It was as if one fed the other. His embarrassment was only making hers worse, but there was no way to stop it. Backfeeding, she'd dubbed it. It usually only happened when her emotions matched someone else's and also happened to be intense. They seemed to feed of each other, making the feeling stronger than it normally would be.
Keeping her smile in place, Jasmine watched him turn to her, his face covered with both concern and apology. She'd tried to make a joke of their near disaster, and she hoped he wouldn't be offended by it. Some people could get touchy when complete strangers tried to say something witty. He didn't feel offended, though. Mostly just embarrassed and hoping that she wasn't hurt, which she was grateful for. Maybe he wasn't as rude as most of the people she ran into. She took a couple steps toward him as he approached, watching him brush hair out of his eyes and knowing that he was trying to hide his embarrassment. It was something people did all the time. She didn't understand it in many ways. Everyone she'd ever met, everyone she'd ever felt all experienced the same emotions. Everyone felt happiness, sadness, desperation, despair, grief, anger, lust... why people tried to hide it was beyond her. Perhaps people just tried to hide the reasons for the emotions, but honestly, nearly crashing into someone was a perfectly legitimate reason to be embarrassed in her opinion.
Jasmine watched as he stopped in front of her, looking everywhere but in her eyes. "Real sorry about that. Are you okay? I uh, kinda didn't see you there." She was glad to see him smile and laugh, but the fact that he was so mortified broke her heart. Without thinking about personal space, she reached out and laid a hand on his arm, still smiling. "I should be asking you if you're alright. You're the one who crashed, after all, but since you asked... your heroic dive into that cafe table saved both me and my coffee." She held up the cup as proof of her words, even sloshing it slightly to show there was still coffee inside. Her smile brightened for a moment and she had the intense urge to pull this adorable kid into a hug, but that might be crossing a line. Jasmine restrained herself and took her hand off his arm. "I'm Jasmine, by the way. I... " She'd almost commented on his boredom from before, but she didn't want to freak him out so she changed what she'd been about to say. "I go to Silas."

She put her hand on his arm and Matty's body instantly tensed. His thought process spiraled out of control, and his eyes finally met her's. 'She's touching my arm! Oh my god, oh my god! Hot older chick is touching me! Wait till the guys here about this! Eep, come on Matty! Stop blushing!' But as he did look into her eyes and saw her genuine smile, something made him relax. Maybe his confidence had just kicked him in the butt for being so dunderheaded, or maybe it was her insistence of making a joke out of the whole situation. Either way, he was calming down as he nodded his head a little too eagerly. He couldn't completely shake the bashfulness though, especially with her hand on him. It wasn't every day he had physical contact with a pretty older woman (or a girl his own age really), even if it was only something so minor.
"I've had worse!" His chest puffed out a little as he tried to downplay any pain his abdomen was feeling. Bravado was always a good way to mask things, and it made him appear cooler and tougher, right? Right? Regardless, he was practically crowing at the fact that she'd called him heroic (even if it was only in jest), though he did manage to add on a humble, "But I'm glad you're alright."
Her mention of Silas only perked him up more. Lowering his skateboard with one hand, he set it gently on the ground and kept a foot on it. This let him stand up without having to stand still too much, the leg lazily rolling the board back and forth with minor pressure, foot pushed down on the end of the deck so only two wheels actually moved. His hands were a bit more animated as he spoke, doing a bit of silent counting as he tried to figure out his class standing. "I go to Silas too! I'm a... junior! now. I'm Matty." His own smile was a grin and he did his best to not blurt out the first question that had popped into his head, the question of what her ability was.

[/div] dance is life, As Jasmine laid her hand over his arm, she could practically feel the hormones raging through his system. She took a deep breath and tried to keep the emotions from overwhelming her, but his nervousness was making her insides twitch. Hitching a smile to her face, she thought about other things. It was amazing to her that she'd literally run into someone who seemed as innocent as this kid. Bored out of his mind, riding his skateboard through Willowbrook to pass the time, and so very flustered by her touch. So many people that she felt had hidden agendas. They all felt sad or lonely all the time. They felt misunderstood and angry. It was quite refreshing to be filled with this kid's nervous excitement and even his embarrassment; much better than standing in line behind a woman whose boyfriend had just cheated on her. That had happened last week and Jasmine didn't care to repeat the experience, even though there was nothing she could do to avoid it. Still, her powers had their perks.
As she took her hand away, he dropped his skateboard to the ground and kept it in place with a foot, rolling it back and forth slightly in his nervous state. Still, she had that urge to wrap him up in a hug. People like him shouldn't ever change. Still, insight into his personality for a couple moments didn't mean that she knew him. Even that wasn't what was holding her back. She just didn't want to freak him out, and most people freaked out when they were hugged by complete strangers. Then again, she wasn't a person who respected personal space. It came from a couple of things. First off, she was raised in a very openly affectionate family. Then there was dance. You couldn't exactly do a good partner routine if you were afraid of touching the other person, and she'd had a few dance partners over the years. It was a bit different as Silas, as she didn't know what a person's powers were or how they would react. Sometimes that made it hard for her to keep herself in check. No freaking people out, Jaz. Not that this guy seemed to mind the attention.
He puffed up his chest while telling her that he'd had worse, and she couldn't help giggling, knowing that he was trying to act tough. This kid was just too adorable. He fidgeted around while telling her that he also went to Silas, and his emotions changed into excitement and curiosity. Her own excitement peaked to match his and she grinned widely. "That's awesome! I'm a college freshman there. I only just started this semester. My parents thought it was best if I got the 'real' high school experience before going off to learn about my powers." It wasn't every day that she met someone just as weird as she was. She was tempted to ask him what his powers were, but not everyone liked having their business pried into. It was her job to wade into those waters first. "I know you're wondering what I do. I'm an empath." Her friendly smile got wider in the hopes that he didn't freak out once he made the connection that she'd just felt everything that he had. It amazed her that people could feel so ashamed of their own feelings when there was nothing to be ashamed of.

A college chick? Matty's eyes widened slightly in awe. Judging by her reactions, he was impressing a college chick. Or rather, he was conversing with her without having her look down on him. Either way, SCORE! The guys would totally be impressed. He would bet none of them had ever spent this much time in the presence of a pretty college girl that wasn't some sort of relative.
Of course, that didn't mean he completely understood everything she was saying. As far as he knew Silas was as real a high school as any. Well, maybe it was a bit more like a stuffy, pretentious, private, boarding school, but it had just about everything a "normal" high school had. Same boring subjects, same boring teachers, same boring homework... At least Silas had a wicked awesome games room and more interesting people to balance out all the boring crap. From what he'd heard of his brothers' high school experiences, Silas was definitely way better.
And then there was that thing she said about her power. She was an empath. Matty's mind was going, "What the hell is an empath!?" But he was trying really hard to cover it up! It wasn't a term that was completely foreign to him and he knew there were other students at the school that were the same thing. He just... didn't know any of them personally. And he didn't want to appear stupid in front of the pretty college girl so instead of asking, he decided to play it smooth and pretend he did.
He came off as just a little too casual. "Really? That's cool! I'm a teleporter. I'd show you, but last time I used my powers in town I ended up reappearing in front of one of the teachers..." He winced at the memory. Considering he wasn't even supposed to be in town without a chaperon, the breaking of two rules in front of one of the professors had earned him two weeks detention. He probably would have ended up in the headmistress's office had it not been for the sweet, apologetic act he'd managed to put on. Matty could be hard to resist when he jutted out his lower lip and looked like he was about to cry. It certainly won his mother over most of the time, anyways.

[/div] dance is life, Jasmine took a sip of her coffee, nearly scalding herself in her desire to do something with her hands besides cuddle this adorable kid. The main emotion she felt from at the moment was confusion mixed with a lingering giddiness. She didn't quite understand what he was so happy about, but she was glad of it all the same. There wasn't enough happiness in the world, in her opinion, so one more happy person was a blessing. She was even a bit amused at his confusion which had started when she explained about a "real" high school experience and only intensified when she told him what her gift was. Grinning widely even though her tongue was still burning, she watched his reaction which was the opposite of the confusion she knew he felt.
"Really? That's cool! I'm a teleporter. I'd show you, but last time I used my powers in town I ended up reappearing in front of one of the teachers..." Jasmine laughed at the imagined scene that popped up in her mind's eye. It was all too easy to picture Matty fumbling and trying to explain what he was doing in order to keep himself out of trouble. Her mind went haywire thinking up all the things she'd do if she could teleport, wondering if there was a range. If not, she could be in the Caribbean by nightfall. She doubted it was something she'd actually do, but it was always entertaining to daydream.
Jasmine took a more careful sip of her coffee, still smiling. "Teleporting would be cool. Much cooler than what I do. I mean, I don't see what's so special about feeling the emotions of everyone around me, but I suppose it comes in useful from time to time." It was the best way she could think of to enlighten him and ease his confusion without sounding condescending. Widening her grin, she leaned in conspiratorially. "For example, in the cafe behind me, there's a woman in there who is seriously crushing on the female cashier. I find that amusing since she's obviously there with her boyfriend." In Jasmine's mind, if people weren't going to be honest about what they felt, it wasn't as bad to poke a bit of fun at them.

Without asking Jasmine elaborated on what it was her powers did. Understanding dawned on the boys face as she explained that she could feel the emotions of others. Then that understanding turned into more confusion and slight panic as he realized that she could probably feel every emotion he was feeling at the moment. Did that mean she knew he thought she was hot? No, wait... She'd have to be able to read his mind, not his emotions, to figure that out.
He would have kept puzzling over his thoughts had the older girl not leaned closer. Sure the action was more conspiratorial than anything else, but that didn't stop him from feeling a slight hint of giddy embarrassment at the sudden closeness. What she said next didn't help the situation. Matty's eyes practically bugged out of his head with shock. Did, did she just insinuate...?
"Woah, wait, what?" Any false bravado he had been putting on was gone. Instead, he had darted around Jasmine to look inside the coffee shop window, curious to see who she was talking about now. All his search did was build his frustration though. The place was well packed and he wasn't exactly good at reading people. Even if he did catch a glimpse of this poor woman, chances were he would have no idea that it was her.
He stared with his face pressed against the window for a few minutes longer before finally giving up. Disappointment at not being able to find the lady was coming off him as clearly as it was written on his face. His eyes found Jasmine's face again as he turned back towards her, his own head tilted slightly to one side. Innocent curiosity had a habit of getting the better of him sometimes, and the tidbit of information about the stranger had been enough to distract him from thinking about the sorts of things she was possibly picking up from him.
"So like, you can tell all that just from what they're feeling?" His eyes were still wide and round as he asked, flashing with amazement and curiosity. He never would have known that sort of thing about random strangers, or even his own family members for that matter... Which caused a bit of a devious thought to spring up in the back of his mind. Jasmine's talent must have been really useful for blackmail. Just thinking of all the ways he could have used such a thing to get his brothers back whenever one of them teased him left him with a bit more respect for the older teenager.

[/div] dance is life, Jasmine grinned as she felt the comprehension dawn on the younger guy. It was quickly laced with a bit of confusion before panic flared and drowned out almost everything else. Her smile faltered slightly but she tried to remain upbeat. While she was used to people reacting like that when they found out what she could do, it still made her a bit uncomfortable. It would be different if she could control it, but she couldn't. For as long as she could remember, she'd been feeling what everyone else around her felt and had simply adapted her life to deal with it. It was part of her now, and she rarely gave it any thought. Still, it couldn't be fun for the people around her, knowing that she was inadvertently snooping around in their feelings.
As she pointed out the girl in the cafe, Matty darted around her and peered in the window, embarrassment forgotten. Jasmine smiled to herself. Distraction accomplished. Apparently, he couldn't find the girl, though, and she walked partway to the window, letting her powers feel around inside the establishment. The girl was still there, but obstructed by the crowd from this angle. Just before she dragged Matty to the other window to point her out, he turned and looked at her with his head cocked sideways. Jasmine nearly laughed. This guy was just too adorable for his own good, and she wondered if he knew it or not.
"So like, you can tell all that just from what they're feeling?" Jasmine continued smiling as she shrugged. "It's a combination of things. If I had just felt her emotions, I wouldn't have had any idea, but I was paying attention to what she was doing at the time. Every time her eyes came up and looked at the cashier, she get this..." Her face crumpled up in thought. "It's hard to describe emotions. I'll just say attraction. She had the same attraction for the guy sitting across from her, but it was different. When she looked at the cashier, there was shame too." Jasmine mimiced Matty's body language by cocking her head. "Really, most of the time I don't feel anything that someone doesn't already express with their tone of voice or body language." He was still curious and awed though, which was much preferable to the panic from earlier.
Feeling better about the situation, she backed up a couple steps and indicated with a nod of her head to the sidewalk. "Wanna walk and talk at the same time? I try to be good company and I'm not doing anything else productive." Then a thought struck her. It would be absurd but there was really no harm in it. "Hey, there's a masquerade coming up at school. If you're going, would you want to go with me? I was planning on going alone, but it would be nice to have a friend there for moral support." She smiled and a bit of a mischeivous glint flashed in her eyes. Matty didn't know it, but if he agreed, she was going to make him dance at least once. It was a bit forward of her, having just met the guy, but she could tell even without the empathy that he was a good kid and she had a strong desire to look out for him.

He listened with rapt attention, hanging on her every word as she explained more about her power. Well, he tried to anyway. It all sounded a bit complex and considering it was not a school day the learning part of his brain had powered down. It all kind of sounded like a bunch of psychological mumbo jumbo the more he tried to figure it out, combined with a lot of people watching. Maybe she was training to be a shrink?
Ah well. Matty gave his shoulders a shrug and picked up his skateboard again, holding it under one arm. He wasn't really sure what else to say on the subject, though he was still looking a little awed. An, "Oh, that's cool," escaped him as he trailed after the older girl, looking a little like a wide-eyed puppy before he managed to fall into step with her. She had invited him to walk with her and he wasn't about to let her get away. Plus, it wasn't like he had anything better to do; Jasmine's company was a lot better than continuing to boredly roll down the street on his own.
Pity what she said next managed to catch him so off guard that he managed to trip over a crack in the sidewalk. Stumbling a few steps, he managed to catch himself and remain upright. Had she really just asked him to the masquerade dance as friends? Matty couldn't believe his ears. He had to be dreaming, right? Here was a pretty, older woman asking him, him, to go to the dance with her. His expression seemed to mimic a fish as he tried to find his voice, not completely convinced this was real.
"I um, uh, that'd be great! I mean, uh, I'd love to! Er, that'd be cool! Yeah, sure, that'd be cool. I mean..." He could feel the blush rising in his cheeks, humiliation seeping out of his every pore. 'Real smooth, man. Real smooth.' The pit of his stomach was in knots. The invite had gotten him so overly excited that he had lost all sense of playing it cool, of coming off as casual. As he continued to walk along side the girl, his head dropped to stare at his shoes. Maybe if he was lucky she wouldn't realize how much he had just messed up. Of course, his mind had blanked out so he'd also forgotten that she could feel everything he was feeling. Poor Matty.

[/div] dance is life, Jasmine was feeling rather pleased with herself. It wasn't that she was going out of her way to fluster the poor kid, but it still entertained her quite a bit. He was reacting like how a normal guy his age would react, so there was nothing for him to be ashamed of. Then again, if he wasn't a little bit embarrassed it wouldn't be nearly as normal. That was the only thing she really took note of. Most people were just normal and felt normal things. It was when something was particularly strong or out of the ordinary that caught her attention. Just a couple of days ago she'd been blindsided by a couple that had just gotten engaged. She couldn't stop grinning for three hours after that encounter. Luckily at Silas, she mostly felt boredom which was much easier to ignore.
Making her way down the street, Jasmine grinned to herself while keeping halfway tuned in to Matty's emotions. The shock rolling off of him widened her smile, but then he tripped. Instinctively, she turned as if to catch him and immediately felt like a soccer mom. She pulled her hands back as he caught himself and studiously pretended like nothing out of the ordinary happened. "I um, uh, that'd be great! I mean, uh, I'd love to! Er, that'd be cool! Yeah, sure, that'd be cool. I mean..." She didn't want to laugh at him, but a small giggle escaped her control. Besides, she wasn't really laughing at him as much as she was laughing at the situation itself. Here was this adorable guy getting flustered just because she asked him to the dance. It was highly flattering and she stifled her laughter.
"Breathe, Matty. It won't be all that great. I'm going to make you dance even if you're horrible at it." She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. Maybe she should warn him that she was a dancer. Then again, it wasn't like she was going to be pulling any spectacular moves at a school dance. She'd keep it simple. After walking a few steps, she turned and indicated his skateboard. "It's weird. I'm a pretty active person but I've never been on a skateboard in my life. It looks easy when other people do it, but I'm assuming its much more complicated. How long have you been skating?" Not only was she genuinely curious, but maybe he'd let her try it out sometime.
Oh wow. Crappy post is crappy. Sorry! DX
