She always did enjoy a nice breeze.
Today, the breeze was calm and crisp. The gentle breeze tugged playfully at the girl's hair. Charlotte walked leisurely along, towards Lake Claire. She could smell the strong scent of pine trees and other various plants as she began to approach the lake. A typical day in her life. She would attend her classes, then go out for a long, calm, solitary walk. Charlotte liked the silence. Somehow it was comforting to her. Once in a while she would hear the soft choir of chirping birds. This was the only time she could truly relax, and just think. "Think about what?" she often asked herself. There really wasn't very much to think about anyway.
Then again, there was a lot to think about. Life, for instance. What had she done with her life? She was nothing but a dirty whore and criminal. But that was in the past. Now she was actually turning her life around. Ever since she met him, she'd found the courage to stand up to her father. She had that young man, Travis, to thank. She owed him a lot, and it was unfortunate that he had to go. He had to go and take care of business in Alberta. Somehow, though, Charlotte felt like she would see him again.
Now, what was her father doing? Was he still a filthy criminal, or did he decide to take her advice and turn his life around? No, she could hardly begin to imagine. How could she let herself be sucked into that life? Sure, he took care of her, and he protected her, but did he ever stop to consider what she wanted? No, never. Charlotte did love her father dearly. After all, he was her one and only father in the world. She couldn't hate him.
Charlotte cleared her head of these thoughts as she approached the water's edge. She took a seat, and stared out at the horizon; where sky met earth.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP
The ground by the edge of the lake started to turn from grass, to dirt, to sand as Daniel walked closer to the water's edge. He needed to practice with his abilities, and he liked to be near a source of water when he did so. Things usually ended up much safer that way. Besides, it wasn't like he had a car or anything to get away from the school for awhile. Professor Miller had offered to get him one, but Daniel didn't want to be in debt to him any more than he already was. It was going to take him years to pay back what he'd been lent in the first place. He didn't see any need to add to it when a car was an extravagance he could live without. Not that he didn't want one, but he wanted to get it on his own. He wanted it to be the product of his own efforts and not because he was doing a teacher's dirty work. Better yet, he'd get himself a motorcycle. He'd always wanted one and it was cheaper on fuel, too.
Sitting down on a worn down boulder, Daniel rolled his shoulders and tried to relax. It was a nice day out with the sun shining down and warming him. The birds were chirping and there was a crisp breeze that brought a sense of freshness with it. None of it did anything to soothe the tension between his shoulders, though. His powers were cool in some ways. Being able to manipulate fire was a gift. That's what his parents had always told him. But too many things had happened in his life for him to look at it that way anymore. His powers felt like something volatile inside him and he knew he wasn't safe, especially in stressful environments. Daniel took another deep breath and tried to stay as calm as possible. He was next to a lake. What sort of trouble could he get into, right? There wasn't much out here toward this end, away from the school as it was. Most of the other students tended to stay closer to the school where the sandy beach was located, which suited his purposes just fine.
Daniel stared out over the water as he brought his hands up, concentrating on not blowing himself up. Flames flickered to life across his fingers, soon engulfing his hands entirely and he swallowed. So far, so good. He forced the flames out and did it again, relighting his hands over and over again until he felt centered enough to do more. Licking his lips, he focused, blocking everything out but himself and the flames as he coaxed them higher and hotter. He moved them away from himself as he breathed, pushing the fire together in front of him. In no time at all, there was an orb of flame in front of him the size of a beach ball and he stood up, his toes nearly touching the water that was lapping at the shore. Daniel allowed himself a small grin and he extinguished his hands while keeping the ball of flame in front of him intact. Then he took a step back and tripped over the boulder he'd been sitting on. All at once, the flames in front of him lost their form and expanded outward, singing his hair before puffing out of existence. Daniel landed on his backside in the sand next to the boulder with a grunt, scraping the heel of his hand on the rock as he tried to catch himself. Yep, that was enough for one day.

Fire.
The cool breeze brought the scent of smoke. A fire. At first Charlotte thought what if the school was on fire. No, it wasn't the school. The scent drifted from behind her. She panicked a little bit. What could possibly cause a fire out here? Charlotte slowly turned her gaze in the direction of the smell, and to her surprise...
A fire manipulator. She watched the young man put his powers into motion. The flames danced across his fingers, and soon spread to the entirety of his hands. It looked beautiful to her. She loved the way fire looked. The way it danced in the breeze. But, at the same time, she feared it. How could something so beautiful, be so dangerous?
And then, she got the scare of her life. The man fell from the boulder he'd been sitting on. The fire extended quite a bit before him. Her heart skipped a beat or two as she witnessed this. And then, the flame died. Charlotte let out a sigh of relief. He tried to catch himself, but he was unsuccessful.
Now, it was time to approach. Charlotte didn't intend to have a full convorsation with him. Unless it really got to that point, which she hardly doubted it would. No, she would ask him if he was okay, and offer to help him up. Maybe exchange a few words, and that was it. "Hey," she began, "are you alright? Would you like some help up?" As she let those last words slip off her tongue, she offered her hand, and waited for him to either accept or decline.
As she waited, she took a quick note of his appearance. He was quite the handsome young fella, as were the other guys she had encountered in her past. But, was he a polite gentleman like Travis was? Or was he just a full out creep?

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP
Daniel stared at the spot where his ball of flames had exploded and sighed. One little distraction, and it was all over the place. It was frustrating to no end. Granted he was in the middle of falling down which was pretty distracting, but he should have been able to focus enough to keep it from exploding in his face. He looked down at his hand which seemed to be deciding on whether or not it wanted to bleed. It didn't really hurt yet, but he supposed he'd be bruised tomorrow which would look brilliant on his pale skin. He was about to lever himself up out of the sand when a voice sounded seemingly out of nowhere. "Hey, are you alright? Would you like some help up?"
Jumping a bit, Daniel blinked at her outstretched hand a moment before he found his voice. With his hands being recently on fire, he was hesitant to take her assistance, but he didn't want to seem rude, either. Wiping his palms on his jeans, he peered up at her with a slight smile. "My hands are probably still a bit warm, but I appreciate the offer." His body temperature would even out within a matter of minutes, but he didn't want to scald the poor girl. That was the last thing he needed. More injuries on his resume. So instead of taking her hand, he pried himself out of the sand and stood in front of her rather sheepishly. His words came slowly, embarrassed as he was, and they came slightly tinged with a British accent which had carried over from his youth. "I... er... suppose you saw all of that, huh?" He squinted into the light, trying to get a good look at her.
The first thing Daniel noticed was here hair which was a gorgeous shade of red, almost the color of the flames he'd just been working with. He smiled at the irony as he finally held out his hand to her. "Daniel Ashford, and as you noticed, I'm giving myself a lesson on how not to play with fire. Pleased to meet you." He didn't really talk to many people around the school and stuck mainly to observing in the background, but that was something he wanted to change. Curiosity burned in him to know what her abilities were, but he held his tongue for the time being. It was rude to pry and if she wanted to tell him, she'd do it in her own time. Although, he'd have to find out about the students here at the Academy or his financial aid was officially cut off completely. He'd come to like this place and he didn't want to be forced to leave just because he couldn't afford to stay.

He seemed pleasant enough.
"My hands are probably still a bit warm, but I appreciate the offer."
Charlotte retracted her hand, and stood straight up. He probably had the right idea. She blinked, "right, I guess that's not a good idea, huh?" It wasn't too wise to go grabbing someone's hand after they'd been "playing with fire". He was quite polite about it, which instantly reached out to Charlotte. Maybe he wasn't as bad as she thought he may have been. Then again, this was their first time meeting, so Charlotte didn't want to jump to conclusions just yet. She would just wait and see...
"I... er... suppose you saw all of that, huh?"
Charlotte giggled a little bit, and then shot him a small smile. "That I did." she said. He obviously didn't have a tight grasp on his powers yet. Or he just got intimidated. Typical for a fire manipulator. Charlotte would probably get scared too.
"Daniel Ashford, and as you noticed, I'm giving myself a lesson on how not to play with fire. Pleased to meet you."
Now she seemed it was appropriate to start to outline his overall personality. He identified himself as Daniel Ashford. And then he ended with "plased to meet you." Maybe he wasn't horrible at all. After all, he seemed pleasant enough. She took his hand, giving it a casual shake, and then releasing it. She took note the adorable british accent which escaped with his words. "Cute," she thought. "Pleased to meet you, too, Daniel. Charlotte Illim-Velaquez is the name."
He reminded her of Travis in a few ways. They both had the same polite attitude, and they both... Charlotte stopped her thoughts right there. She had to stop thinking about him. He was in the past, and it was time to close that chapter in her life, and time to start a new one. What good would it do her to keep reminicing on the past, when she had her future to focus on? Charlotte took a small, subtle breath, and blinked. "Nice day, in'it?"

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP
Daniel smiled at Charlotte, a bit embarrassed about having been caught nearly blowing himself up. Ever since he started using his abilities again, and being in an environment where he could do so, he'd been working with small things like lighting a stick on fire or making a small fire burn in different shapes. Part of him was anxious to do more, but Daniel of all people knew how dangerous it could be. In any case, he struggled to always remain calm, no matter what he may be feeling at the time. That was the toughest part.
Relinquishing Charlotte's hand, he nodded to her while trying not to be completely dumbfounded by her name. If he had a name like that, he'd probably misspell it. Even after hearing her say it, he wasn't sure if he could have repeated it. Still, it wasn't his place to judge something she had no control over. Heck, it wasn't his place to judge at all. Too many hard feelings and misunderstandings happened when people were judgmental, and it was something he'd much rather avoid if at all possible.
There was a moment of awkward silence as Daniel watched Charlotte's face, noticing a hint of sadness. His heart went out to her, even if he didn't know what had made her sad. Too many people with abilities like theirs had trouble in their pasts, whether from accidents like Daniel himself, or through persecution from others. That was a big part of him hiding his powers for so long. He didn't want to get chased down by an angry mob with pitchforks. Not that it was likely to happen, but he wouldn't have put it out of the realm of possibility.
Charlotte seemed to come back to herself after a moment, but Daniel still looked at her a bit worriedly. "Nice day, in'it?" He offered her a small smile and nodded. "It's beautiful today. Very nearly my favorite weather." He looked out over the water, content for a moment to simply feel the nice breeze and the sunlight shining down on them. Smiling, he turned to Charlotte, cocking his head in uncertainty. "Would you.. I mean, you seemed to be enjoying a walk before I interrupted. I just wondered if you'd like to walk with me?" He gestured toward the path that would lead them down the edge of the lake, through a small wooded area, and eventually back to the school. "You don't have to if you don't want to, but I was going to head back anyway. I would be grateful for the company if you'd like."

A walk sounded wonderful.
Charlotte noticed Daniel's small smile. He looked slightly embarrassed about her seeing him. She figured she would have been slightly embarrassed too. Who wouldn't be? Charlotte had her moments too, after all.
Awkward silence. That was always interesting for a first meeting. She noticed Daniel identifying the saddened look on her face. from the look on his face, she could tell that he was searching for a reason to it. Charlotte didn't want to seem like someone who gloated on about her past, and never moved on. She figured she should keep it hidden, for now. Unless Daniel was curious, then maybe she would open up to him. Opening up wasn't a common thing for her to do, unless she could really trust the person, and Charlotte couldn't exactly tell whether she could or not, yet.
As she snapped back into reality, and escaped her thoughts, she returned Daniel's nods and smiles. She noticed the look of worry on his face. But, why?
"It's beautiful today. Very nearly my favorite weather."
She looked out in the direction he was looking. It really was a gorgeous spot, she had to admit. She often enjoyed coming here. Somehow it offered her a sense of clarity and serenity. Here, she found that she could escape the stress of school, her thoughts, and just kick back and relax. "Mine too," she said.
"Would you... I mean, you seemed to be enjoying a walk before I interrupted. I just wondered if you'd like to walk with me? You don't have to if you don't want to, but I was going to head back anyway. I would be grateful for the company if you'd like."
Charlotte watched as she gestured towards the way he intended to take back to the school. It looked like a long way, but that was how she liked it. Nice and long. It gave her time to think, and time to clear her mind. She listened as he spoke. "Yeah, I'd like to." she said. Company on a walk would be nice for a change. Being alone could get... lonely, after a while.

words // 463 // tagged // Charlotte boy with a coin, T H E N M A K I N G A W I S H , A N D T O S S E D I N T H E S E A Daniel watched Charlotte as she mentally examined the route he was suggesting. The path was long, but it wasn't getting too late yet and they'd be able to take their time and enjoy the scenery. It had a few twists and turns, first leading them by the water, and then taking them under the canopy of trees overhead. Daniel looked at the path, too, hoping that a little hike would be able to clear his head. Whenever he sat and pondered too long, he started to remember things he'd much rather forget. Things like the accident that had taken his parents' lives, or the random beatings he used to get in the foster home. It was part of his past that he sometimes wished didn't happen. He only sometimes wished it, because every experience taught him something new, and he couldn't really wish away that knowledge. Wishing away the pain of it was something else entirely.
Those thoughts were pushed from his mind as Charlotte said she'd like to walk with him and he grinned widely at her. In his life, he'd done a lot of walking, but somehow this was different. He wasn't just walking to get somewhere. He was walking simply for the joy of it and the relaxation it provided. And as an added bonus, he was walking with a beautiful young woman who was accepting his company, regardless of the fact that he'd nearly just blown himself up. It still amazed him that people weren't afraid of him at Silas. If he were someone else and just happened to meet himself, he'd probably go the other direction for safety's sake. Not here, though. People seemed to accept him and his powers with equal tolerance, and it was a gift he would never be able to repay.
The thought of repaying gifts brought his mind to Professor Miller, and he mentally shook it off. He'd cross that bridge when he got there, and not a moment before if he could help it. Daniel was finally settling in at the Academy, and he didn't want anything to disturb that. If he was to succeed in that, he'd have to keep his eyes and ears open, and do what Professor Miller told him to do. If he didn't, he was pretty sure he'd be back to living on the streets which wasn't somewhere he wanted to be. Not now that he'd found this place. Daniel shook his head physically this time, wiping away the look on his face and letting a genuine smile replace it as he took a few steps and gestured at the path. "Ladies first." He raised his eyebrows slightly, waiting for her to take the first step with a patience borne of too many hard trials.

She wondered if Daniel walked alone as much as she did, which was a lot. It was mostly alone too. She walked mostly to escape the thoughts in her mind, but that wasn't the entirety of it. She also enjoyed nature, and what beauty the outdoors had to offer.
However, this walk was different. Charlotte was sharing it with one of the first people she'd met at the school. He wasn't just your every day guy, though. He was polite, and he wasn't half bad looking either. Usually any good-looking guys she met were jerks. But, she had hope in this school. Maybe the other guys were like Daniel, and were actually decent.
Charlotte cleared her head of these thoughts. She blinked, looking towards Daniel shaking his head. He had an odd look on his face, but he shook his head, which also shook away the look. What was the look for? He was probably thinking about something. She just let it slide. "Ladies first." He uttered, raising his eyebrows. He'd also taken a few steps away from the path to let her cross. "How cute," she thought. Charlotte had to give him credit though. At least he was trying to be nice. "Why thank you, kind sir."
Charlotte turned onto the path, waiting for Daniel to follow. She had no idea what to talk about. She wasn't that great at making small talk. Besides, small talk was small talk. Maybe he would have something to talk about. Hopefully he did.
