Reginald Baker was one of the only darker-skinned black students on campus. Even out of the teachers. It made him feel slightly awkward, having to walk down the halls, and be stared at by some of the other students for how he stood out. He growled some to himself, wishing he had the ability to change his skin color - but why would anyone want to do that? They should be happy with who they are. "But I'm not!" Reggie yelled out loud, his voice echoing off the trunks of the trees that surrounded the lake. He glanced about, his dark eyes not seeing anyone else in sight, and he let out a sigh then.
He was alone. He liked it that way, for the most part, after being shunned by his family, and his friends, because of his curse, as he called it. Reggie had a bit of temper as well, though he tried not showing it around other people. And as he lingered on the past, anger swelled within him. He locked his eyesight on a tree, and swung, knocking off some bark, and bruising his knuckles a little bit. But he didn't care. His eyes held an angry expression.
He turned back to face the lake, and stared across its surface, searching his thoughts for a reason as to why he shouldn't just go jump in the lake, and go under without coming up. Because that would be suicide. And I'm not a depressed chump. I have a reason to live - it's just not showing at the moment. He shook his head, and turned back to the tree. He closed his eyes, letting out a long sigh, trying to calm down his anger. "It's all because she got with that damned Jason. She decided to let her own kids suffer so she can get laid!" It wasn't his mothers fault he was sent off, really. It was her new husbands, and after Reggie had invaded his dreams, his mom had went off on a rage, and send him away.
He then moved over to the bank of the lake and sat, focusing his eyes on the tiny ripples that came, from the tiny fish that lived under its surface. He growled again, his hands gripping the little bit of grass that was growing, and ripping it out slowly. This was why he couldn't make any friends. He would have black out moments, and angry moments - and no one wants to be around that, so why would anyone try to help him with it?

Beep. Beep. Beep. Be-.
The alarm on Anais’ side table was disabled with a well-placed slap. One half-closed eye peeked out from beneath the covers, weary of the time. Ten o’clock. Damn, she had slept in. Anais tended to be an early riser, but yesterday’s looming pile of unread books and unfinished homework had kept her up all night and so she had unconsciously treated herself to a little more shut eye. The poor girl still needed her beauty rest, after all. But still, her body was already beginning to come alive and her muscles were itching for her morning jog. Luckily for Anais, the academy had plenty of acreage to keep her busy.
Once fully awake, Anais tiptoed to her chest of drawers and pulled out a pair of navy jogging shorts and an old burgundy tank top. She quickly dressed, pulled her hair into a ponytail, and headed out the door. As she walked, Anais scanned through her playlists, attempting to find the best one that would fit her mood best this morning. She practically danced down the hallways and out of the main entrance with anticipation. Jogging was the perfect start to the young girl’s day, and always lifted her mood.
The chilly morning air played with her ponytail and sent a wave of goose bumps up her arms. A cold front must have come in during the night; it was unusually cool for this time of year, at this time of day. But Anais didn’t mind, she would be warm soon enough anyway. Once her feet touched grass she was off, making her way down the lawn on an imaginary pathway. She was choosing a different direction today, heading in the direction of the lake. She let her mind wander back home, filling her head with thoughts of her parents, her ex-classmates, and her friends. Did they miss her at all? She had left in such a rush that many of her friends didn’t even know she was gone until she had finished unpacking at Silas. Anais was good at keeping secrets, even her own.
By now she was entwined in the forest, weaving in and out of the towering cluster of tree trunks. The smell of decaying leaves and tree sap filled her nose, and she allowed herself to smile. This wasn’t something you could get in Phoenix. All she ever really smelt there was hot concrete and the occasional cactus bloom. But this, it was refreshing. Soon all of her worries dissipated and she was completely focused on the world around her. She imagined she could see every little detail in the tree bark, every skittish animal running for cover… she was superwoman now.
The lake came into view sooner than she imagined, and quite frankly, it took her breath away. She had seen lakes before, but none of them compared to this. Anais stopped, pulling out her earbuds and letting them fall over her shoulders, ”Wow.” she whispered, trying to soak in the scene all at once. It proved impossible, but she did manage to stop a lonely figure. He seemed to be staring intently at its surface, talking to himself. Anais hadn’t made any friends in the short week she had been here. Quite honestly, she had not even made the attempt. Everybody seemed to be matched up already, grouped into little social circles that she was afraid to disrupt. But this guy, he was alone. And maybe he liked it that way. But that thought never crossed Anais’ thoughts as her limbs began to move again, toward the boy sitting on the bank.
She approached him from an angle where he would most likely see her coming. Anais never liked to be snuck up on, and so she always tried to avoid doing so to others. Clearing her throught and pushing a stray hair back into place, Anais spoke, ”Hey, I’m Anais.” She smiled her most charming smile, and extending her hand to him.
