So, Shia had found her dormitory alright. And she had settled Loki alright. The little rascal had taken refuge under the bed and was now playing down there as though it were a little fort. She had just shoved some toys down there to keep him occupied and left him a little food and water as she tried to figure out where everything was.
Now, to be perfectly honest, Shia would have been fine if the place had been a normal school, like the ones she used to go to. Several stories, with rickety stairwells, dirty lavatories and graffiti on the walls. With no lawn, the main street just out the front door, a church on one side and a run-down apartment building on the other, everyone so cramped together that you could tell when the other had a temperature, or if they had bathed that morning or not.
But this place? This place had room. Space. There was green outside. And, alright, so it wasn't as if there were no neighbors...Because all the students stayed in the dorms, with other students. But...Well...
Shia sighed. She had been wandering and was now outside, looking up at the building she would be residing in for a long time, now and simply plopped onto the ground, her legs crossed under her, the breeze blowing her long hair about her face. She bit her bottom lip lightly, her eyes narrowed in a lost, almost confused expression. It wasn't as though she couldn't find her way back to her room. She was sure she could do that. But finding the classrooms without the proper 'landmarks' (such as peculiar stains on the wall, or TeShawn painted across the stairs)...? Shia was at a loss.
Although, when she thought about it, she should probably be grateful to her father for this. Finding her a safe, clean environment in which to learn. He had always wanted better for her, and he had certainly found it.

flightless birdnow i'm a fat house cat. nursing my sore, blunt tongue. watching the warm poison rats crawl through the wide fence cracks. pissing on magazine photos. those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean blood of christ mountain stream. Ah, finally she had some free time. it wasn't much, merely some hours, but it was good enough for Maeve, because it allowed her to spend some time just relaxing and doing nothing. well, technically, she was not doing nothing, but since it wasn't school related, it could be considered just that. plus, it was a relatively relaxing activity, so it could be placed in the 'doing nothing' category.
at first, she had planned to spend the day doing some new sketches, given that it was warm outside, and the lighting was good (not that she actually had to worry about that anyway), but in the end, she had brought her camera with her. of course the little black sketchbook was brought along as well, stored safely inside her bag. after all, she never left without it. but today, Maeve was in the mood for photography.
Maeve had always loved photography. not as much as drawing, but almost as much. it was really high up in her list, and drawing only won because a) she was a lot better at it than at photography and b) she felt that drawing something was a more personal experience than just photographing it. but with the discovery of her powers, Maeve found out that she was mysteriously good at getting the perfect lighting. and thus, photography had wormed it's way to her heart and was now one of her favorite hobbies.
The reason why she was in the courtyard today was because she had found out that she had surprisingly few pictures of the place. So here we have Maeve Florian, snapping pictures at random objects of her lighting, followed around by a couple of light orbs that allowed her to light up her surroundings to her liking when she was taking a picture.
it was while she was at this that she caught sight of a girl, seemingly lost. actually, she caught her on camera, snapping the picture before she realized. she lowered the camera and frowned a bit before approaching the younger girl. "Excuse me. Hi." She greeted, the two little light orbs extinguishing as soon as she started talking. "Are you lost?" some words, shia, outfit here, finally! hope it's okay |

Shia had completely not even noticed that dancing globes of light that were making their way slowly towards her, and as such, had completely missed the presence of the person whom the orbs were dancing about. It was a bit of a surprise for her to see a flash before her eyes and she ended up blinking numerous times before glancing up at the person that had just started speaking.
She looked down right pathetic, really, in a white blouse, open black vest and khaki shorts, looking for the world like she just didn't know what she was doing. And she wasn't sure if she was completely grateful a person had found her like that or not.
She shook her head, quickly before pausing and letting out a bashful chuckle, a smile spreading across her face as she reached back to run her fingers over the hairs on the back of her neck. "Well...Yes, actually. In a way..." She looked up at the older lady and got on her feet, wiping the dirt and grassy debris off her back side before rubbing her hands together in an attempt to rub the excess off. She looked back to her somewhat savior only to stop, her wide eyes glued to the camera the other held.
"Oh, goodness, that's beautiful." Shia's adoration for photography and cameras of all kinds was going to shine through.

flightless birdnow i'm a fat house cat. nursing my sore, blunt tongue. watching the warm poison rats crawl through the wide fence cracks. pissing on magazine photos. those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean blood of christ mountain stream. Maeve chuckled at the other girl' s reaction. She hadn't been expecting for the other to be so distracted as to be startled by her. "Sorry, I got caught up in what I was doing and couldn't really stop myself before taking the picture." she explained, offering the younger girl an apologetic smile. no matter how much time had passed, she still remembered how overwhelming Silas had been when she had first arrived. Sure, she was used to being in private schools before, but Sila's had been an all new experience. In fact, she had gotten lost several times during her first days.
"Oh, goodness, that's beautiful." The younger female exclaimed, eyes glued to the camera she was holding. It had been a birthday present from her mother on her eighteenth birthday and had quickly found it's way to her most prized possessions. She was sick of using a lame digital camera to take pictures. Having a professional one made everything better. "If you like this one, you should take a look at the vintage polaroid I have in my dorm." It was more of a collectors piece, actually, and she rarely took pictures with it, cause finding film for the old camera was incredibly hard. Yet, she liked the look of the pictures taken.
"Well, it's nice to meet a fellow photography lover. Even one that seems to be lost. I'm Maeve, by the way." She greeted, securing the camera around her neck before holding out her hand. "Welcome to Silas..." she added, hoping the other would provide her with a name. |

Shia grinned at the apology and shook her head again, clasping her hands together behind her back. "Oh, no! That's fine. I don't mind my picture being taken." She shrugged one shoulder, glancing to one side. "I understand what it's like to just be so caught up in what you're shooting that you don't even think about it before the flash goes off." She had been reprimanded a number of times in her youth for taking pictures without permission and she knew how frustrating that could be. If something catches your eye, it does and that's all there was to it. It was not as though Maeve had been trying to be offensive or anything.
But at the thought of a Polaroid Shia couldn't help but blink in surprise. "Y-you have a Polaroid? God, those things are hard to come by anymore! Where'd you get it?" Shia was well aware that not very many people would have been as impressed with this as she was, but she had a deep-seated love of things that took a human's touch in order to develop, unlike the newer technology these days.
"Ah!" Shia gasped when an introduction was made, snapping her back to the reality that she had just been very rude and not introduced herself even. She quickly reached out for Maeve's hand, taking a firm grip, as her father had shown her. Not very delicate, but strong and confident, the opposite of how she felt most days. "It is very nice to meet you, Maeve! I am Shia..." She paused, pulling away before speaking again. "Are you in a photography club or program or something?" If that was the case, Shia would need to get in on it as well.

"I understand what it's like to just be so caught up in what you're shooting that you don't even think about it before the flash goes off." Maeve smiled at the other girl's words, glad she hadn't gotten mad for having her picture taken without permission. When she was a little kid, running around with her disposable camera, her mother kept warning her she should never take someone's picture without their consent. And whenever she 'forgot' that rule, her mother made a point to drag her back to the person so that she could apologize properly. Even though in the end the picture wouldn't be more than a blurry mess. "well in that case, you'll be the first to see it once i develop them" she offered smiling. it was the least she could do after all.
"Y-you have a Polaroid? God, those things are hard to come by anymore! Where'd you get it?" this time, Maeve really laughed. Photography geeks usually had this reaction when she mentioned the polaroid "It was my mother's actually, so I kinda inherited it." more like rescued it from the trashcan and ranted about how precious that thing was. but the point was, it was hers now.
"Well Shia, is rather nice to meet you. And no, I'm not in a photography club or anything. I took photography classes last semester, but that was about it... It's more of an hobby really, so I never considered joining a club." even if she had wanted to, she wouldn't have the time. taking eight classes was already time consuming enough, she didn't need any clubs helping to drain the rest of her days.
"so... shia" she started, suddenly remembering the reason that had brought her near the other girl in the first place "Are you completely new at Silas? Were you already assigned to a dorm?" |

Shia could not help the huge grin that spread over her face. And even if she could have, she probably wouldn't, as smiling was one of those things she enjoyed a great deal. But the idea of getting to be the first to see another artists work? That was like a huge compliment to her. Even if it was only offered as a way to make up for an impromptu and accidental photo shoot. It still made her feel pretty excited. She knew she never showed her pictures to anyone she didn't love to pieces before anyone else. And while they had only just met, Shia knew she'd want to see more of this person again anyway. "Really? Thank you, so much!"
She listened about Maeve's mother and her smile softened. She had not known her mother and neither of her parents had been into pictures when they were younger. So as a result, Shia only had one photo of her mother to go by. In her opinion, her mother was one of the most beautiful women she had ever seen. The woman could have been a model, or in movies, even! But she had chosen to stay with a man in the slums of New York City, running a little pub. Shia was happy her father had been so lucky. But such things were not something you brought up the first time you had a conversation with someone.
"Oh!" Shia replied after learning that photography was just a hobby and not a point of study for Maeve. That didn't matter. It still gave them something in common to connect over, at least. "That's too bad. It would have been fun to have someone I'd already met around in the classes..." Shia shrugged, kicking at the dirt with her toe a bit
Shia's head shot up at the new questions and she nodded. "Oh, yeah. This is actually my very first day here...'' She paused, letting out a bashful chuckle. "It seems kinda silly to have become so baffled by this place. It's not that big." She glanced up at the school building. "It's just so very...different from what I'm used to..." She nodded again, turning her face back to Maeve. "Yep, got my dorm, settled Loki, my kitten, in it and other than that...I don;t have a roommate yet. I'm sure they'll pick one for me soon enough."

"Really? Thank you, so much!" Maeve let out a small chuckle at Shia's reaction. "Well, consider it an apology for snapping a picture in your face without warning. and a welcoming gift to silas too." she said happily as she adjusted the camera strap on her neck, untangling it from her jacket's collar and making a mental note to buy a more comfortable one. she listened as the younger female said it would be nice to have at least a familiar face in one of her classes and nodded, remembering how awkward she used to feel to see everyone in their own little groups while she was alone.
"Yeah, Silas tends to have that effect on people. don't worry though, you'll get used to it in no time." Maeve said with a smile, tugging at her camera strap so as to try and make it more comfortable, as it was hurting her neck. As it didn't got better, the female sighed, and took the thing off of her neck and placing it over her shoulder, where it was more comfortable. "it's good to know you are settled in, your kitty as well. yeah, i'm roommateless too at the moment, my previous roommate left school last year... though i think i should be getting a new rommie soon." she said, shrugging some. truth was, she was actually glad she didn't have a roommate as of yet. things with her previous one hadn't gone too well, and she wasn't really excited to see who she was going to get this time.
silence settled in between the two girls, and maeve chewed on her bottom lip nervously, thinking about what to say next. damn it, she had never been very good at this kind of thing, making small talk and it always ended up being terribly awkward. fumbling with a loose thread on the hem of her shirt, maeve finally thought of something to say. "So... i take it you haven't really got the chance to see the school then? i could show you around, if you want to. give you a small tour to the place, if you don't mind, of course."

Though she had never found silence to be anything but a comfortable lack of noise. She simply stood, with a smile on her face as she looked up around her, tucking her hair behind her ear when a breeze displaced it. It wasn't until Maeve began to speak that Shia realized that perhaps the other had been uncomfortable with the lack of conversation between them.
"Ah! That would be nice!" she replied and stepped up next to Maeve, reaching her hand out to rest her fingers along Maeve's elbow. It would definitely be a lot easier to get around here if someone showed me." Shia shook her head and grinned at herself. "It's just that, there are so few markers in the building to show me where I'm going...I get lost so quickly..."
She stopped talking and turned to the door, taking a slightly more firm grip about Maeve's elbow, tugging lightly. "I think a red room or the cafeteria would be the most important places to show me, don't you?" Shia was making a bit of a joke. 'Show me everything but the classrooms'. But it was also an honest desire. If there was a photography class, there was a red room somewhere, and that was bound to be Shia's favorite place to be.
It didn't occur to Shia that perhaps Maeve wouldn't appreciate the grabbing. Or the tugging. Or the general physical contact at all. She was always the type to need contact like that. Especially if they had shown some interest in being acquainted with her. And as far as she was concerned, offering to see her again at a later date was an offer of friendship. "Come on! I'm sure you had other things you wanted to do today, so show me quickly!"

flightless birdnow i'm a fat house cat. nursing my sore, blunt tongue. watching the warm poison rats crawl through the wide fence cracks. pissing on magazine photos. those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean blood of christ mountain stream. It seemed that Shia wasn’t really bothered by the silence that had settled between the two of them and for that Maeve was more than grateful. Never being too fond of social situations that involved a lot of talking, Maeve rarely knew what to say. She didn’t like talking much on a regular basis, let alone when she had just met someone and had virtually no idea what the other person was like or what their interests were. She simply didn’t know what to talk about… and the weather just seemed like a bad choice, much like any other sort of small talk she could come up with. So for most part, when she didn’t know what to say, Maeve remained silent. Well, at least with Shia, she had a bit of an advantage though. If anything happened, she could always blurt out some random photography related fact and she knew the other girl would respond well.
The sudden proximity and the touch were two things Maeve hadn’t been expecting and so she stared at Shia with a surprised expression when the younger female grabbed her elbow. It wasn’t as if she was particularly fond of that kind of physical contact, but she didn’t mind it either. Actually, she had been surprised that someone whom she had just met would show any interest in touching her. Still, Maeve shrugged it off, thinking that maybe Shia felt more comfortable like that. After all, it wasn’t like she was greatly bothered by it.
A tug at her arm brought her back to reality and to the situation at hand. "Come on! I'm sure you had other things you wanted to do today, so show me quickly!" Maeve chuckled at Shia’s words and walked forward, towards the school entrance. “Well, in that case, we should start with the Great Hall which is the school’s fancy name for the cafeteria. It’s on the ground floor as well as the kitchens, the Library and the Infirmary” She explained as they walked into the school building. “This is pretty much the starting point. You can go down to the game room and the training rooms or up to the classrooms and the teacher’s offices. But since you want to know where the dark room is, we should go up first.”

But the mention of the infirmary led her to let out a slight laugh herself. "Oh, I doubt I'll be needing the infirmary any. Unless a friend turns up hurt, but, as you're my first I don't think I'll need to worry too much about that, hmm?!"
She didn't really explain. Not that she was reluctant to speak of her abilities. But Maeve had not asked and it seemed divulging that information might be a bit...invasive. As though she were asking the other for such information. Which may be considered rude. And Shia would hate that, if she were rude to Maeve the very first day they had met.
She could barely contain herself, however, when the dark room was mentioned. She gave a little skip in a single step as her other hand came to clutch Maeve's elbow as well. "Oooo! That's the good stuff." she mumbled happily, her giddiness over riding her natural quiet and shy nature. The dark room, dark room! Her face flushed bright with her happiness.

Shia’s words brought a slight frown to Maeve’s face. She wasn’t entirely sure if the other girl meant she didn’t need the infirmary because she rarely got hurt or if it was something related to her powers. Her guess, however, went to the latter, as it seemed something more worth mentioning that ‘oh I don’t need to see the infirmary because I don’t really get hurt’. Maeve cocked an eyebrow at Shia “Accelerated Healing?” she asked, knowing it was as good as a guess as anything. There were lots of powers related to healing, but that one seemed to be the most common one, thus it had been her first guess. “I have light manipulation.” Not that she had been asked what her powers were. But since the topic had came up, the older female figured she could let the other know what her power was.
Shia didn’t seem to be much interested in visiting none of the ground floor rooms, instead wanting to see the dark room. Maeve chuckled at the girl’s enthusiasm. “Well come along then.” The words were said in a cheerful tone as she motioned for the younger female to follow her upstairs, their footsteps echoing in the halls. Surprisingly enough there were few students around, most of them being in classes. Those who like her, happened to have a free period, were probably outside enjoying the day or in the library doing some school project. They crossed a couple of people, most of them ignored the pair, but some casting curious glances at Shia. Even though the school had plenty of students, it was always easy to know who was new. “Well, this is the second floor. Most of your classes will be here, unless the teachers decide to take it outside. To the right are the science, powers and math departments, and to the left are the history, art and literature ones”
Maeve led her down the hall to the left, where the photography classroom and darkroom were. Now that she though about it, she wasn’t sure if it was going to be free for them to actually take a look, but she figured they could at least try. She came up to a door with a small sign that read ‘dark room’ and looked up, only to see that the little red light that signalled someone was using it wasn’t on so it was safe to enter. “Well, here we are. Be my guest.” She said, gesturing for Shia to open the door.
sorry for the delay -.-'

The look was mostly for how comfortable Maeve was just talking about it. Shia had always been told to be quiet about her abilities, so others wouldn't be put off by it. Her father had not wanted her to be persecuted for her uniqueness. But here Maeve was, relinquishing this information as though it were nothing out of the ordinary. "Light manipulation...?" Shia asked, her brow furrowing in thought.
What an interesting ability. To dim or brighten ones surroundings. Suddenly Shia was clinging to Maeve, excitement on her face. "Oh, my goodness! Light manipulation! I bet that helps out a lot with photography, doesn't it? Oh how lucky!" Shia was quite obviously out of her shell, here. She had been lucky enough to find an open person with similar interests first before anyone else. And the girl had power over light. What better power was that?! Not completely useless like Shia's healing abilities.
Of course, Shia had not been seriously injured up to this point, so she didn't appreciate her ability as much as she might have. That and she held a grudge against it, as it left her without a mark to be heard of. Smooth, flawless skin was just plain boring. No story, no character there at all.
And while Shia followed Maeve willingly to the left, towards the arts areas, she could not help but look back towards the classrooms where control over one's powers were taught. That was certainly something she was interested in, though she was still far more excited over the prospect of photography. She glanced at Maeve when they paused before that wondrous door and saw the other female looking up. So Shia did the same and noticed the little red light. "Oh, clever..." she breathed before reaching out to the door handle and turning the knob.
She lightly pushed the door open, stepping in and looking around, her eyes widening in pure glee. She clasped her hands together in front of her as she took a few tentative steps into the room, as though she were worried that if she didn't control herself, she might go mad trying to lay hands on everything in the room. "Oh, wow. This will be perfect." It was quite clear that she just might be spending most of her time at Silas in this very room.
