The late afternoon sun shown down on the courtyard, shimmering off the water of the fountain. Random people walked through, enjoying each other's company in the aftermath of classes and activities. A figure lay on the edge of the fountain, sound asleep, a book lay open on his chest as if he had been in the middle of reading when he had dozed off, which he had.
Chance had had a long day of classes, trying to find his way around, being late twice, and the lack of sleep the night before finally caught up with him when he had finally relaxed enough. Most people after classes were happy and calm rather than frustrated, so it was easy for chance to relax. It was the sadness and anger that really hurt his head and made him all jittery. Going through the classes had been tough, not only did he have to feel his own frustration at not finding them on the first try, he had to go through the anger of the teachers at him being late, the boredom of the other students as they slept through class...it was a nightmare. He just wanted to learn how to control when he would feel peoples emotions.
Chance loved school, he loved learning new things and reading, but the drama was just to much for his head to handle sometimes and he often wondered if it was even worth it, but if he really ever wanted to get anywhere, he had to go. It was times like this though that made it better, the random calmness of sleep and serenity in people around him actually being happy. When he was sleeping, he couldnt really feel other peoples feelings but actually getting into that state was hard. The only person he had really met here was Lend, this morning, that had been fun.

Her classes had passed by quickly without being too taxing on her and the sun was warm and friendly. No one had managed to piss her off just yet. And, most importantly, she was still basking in the glory of a prank well-played. According to that sophomore who had enlisted her help, the girl's cheating ex now had bubblegum pink hair and had yet to realize that the word "dick" had been written across his forehead in permanent marker. Ah, revenge was sweet.
Her Drawing & Painting class having just ended, she decided to make her way down to the courtyard while she was still in a creative mood. Their latest sketch assignment was a landscape piece and she figured why not do it now? It was quite lovely out. Sitting by the fountain and drawing until the sun set would be a perfect way to spend the remainder of the day.
Thus Maddie popped in her headphones, iPod set on shuffle as she made her way out of the school and into the gardens. It wasn't long before she'd reached the fountain in the center. There was one small problem, however. It seemed a boy had fallen asleep on one of the ledges. For a brief moment her eyes narrowed, her annoyance at having to share the space unable to be contained. She got over it well enough though. Such a minor detail was not enough to ruin her very good day.
She made her way to the opposite side of the fountain, setting her bag on the ground and taking a seat. Minutes later she had fished her sketchbook out of her bag and was happily humming along to an old Jewel song as she dragged a pencil across the blank page. It wasn't long before she was completely immersed in her own little world, completely oblivious to the boy and any disturbance her subconscious humming might be causing.

There was a presence. Not one that he was used to, just randomly walking by, there and gone in a moment. This one stayed, as if they were just standing over him. He felt as if he was being watched, even though he knew he wasnt. It was very strange, this person emotions just flashed one after another as if they couldnt decide what to feel. Happy, annoyance, happy, then content all in the span of ten seconds. Being such a light sleeper, this would wake him, even if the random other people wouldnt. This he noticed, and he opened his eyes to take a look.
The first thing he remember was that he had been reading. He picked the book up off his chest and reached down to put it in his back that was resting on the ground next to him. He rubbed his eyes and sat up, the sun was blinding and he squinted to make out the things around him. People were still coming and going, content in each others company. He looked in the direction of the emotion flashes and saw a blonde girl sitting on another ledge of the fountain, headphones in and sketching away. Her feelings now were so calm. She looked normal, he wondered what her ability was. Everyone was here for some reason or another, and he had yet to see anything supernatural. He was curious.

It was the sort of feeling she was paranoid about. If someone was watching her, that meant that someone knew what she was doing, someone knew what she was up to. It was the sort of intuitive feeling that warned her of danger, even if the situation wasn't dangerous at all. In other words, it was the sort of feeling she didn't ignore because it often made the difference between getting caught and ensuring that she could not be caught.
Which is why the waking of the boy behind her went noticed much sooner than if she truly had been blissfully oblivious to everything except that which she had been doing. Vigilance often paid off, even if it was unwarranted. That was probably why the blond's shoulders tensed momentarily before she settled down again. She was so used to being on the lookout that, when she honestly was doing nothing suspicious, she could not resist the impulse. Maddie's emotions on a good day tended to be ever changing at unexpected intervals, so the empath was lucky this was one of her better days (a bad day would have slammed him with anger, annoyance, impatience, and cruelty all directed at incompetent human beings).
So Maddie had settled down a bit after reassuring herself that there was no reason to be so on guard. Then she ran a hand through her blond locks, brushing a few stray strands out of her eyes. She was still a bit suspicious, but it was more of a curiosity nature for once. And as she set her sketchbook down, closing the cover so droplets of water would not splash up from the fountain, she feigned cracking her back in order to get a better look at the sleepy boy behind her. For the brief moment she was turned, she eyed him, examining him and judging him in the way the she cross-examined everyone. Then she turned back, intentionally adjusting her hair again and knocking out a headphone. This way, in case he was that peculiar sort of person that enjoyed talking to whoever happened to be near by (stranger or not), she would at least be able to hear him.
