Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] Having lived in Somerset, England for most of his life, Shiloh had yet to truly get used to the weather up at Silas. Back in his homeland the temperature was most likely around fifty degrees fahrenheit. While here at Silas the temperature at the moment was up in the eighties, much to his discomfort. It was days like this that he wished he was back in England, and not at the risk of getting a sunburn so bright it had potential to rival his eyes. But with his family still in the process of rebuilding their lives and saving money, Shiloh was left to his own devices to try to find a way to cool off. Instead of swimming in the fountain like last time he had chosen to take a less mischevious approach and go and swim in the lake.
Dressed in swim trunks and a plain t shirt, Shiloh walked down the sidewalk that lead down to the lake. His reputation followed him, and the crowds parted like the red sea. Such behavior caused the teen to smirk with what could be taken as happiness. He didn't normally care what reputation he tended to build, but he was glad that his current one had such perks.
Having reached the lake, Shiloh kicked off his sandals and pulled off the t-shirt. Not wanting to stand in the heat any longer, he waded through the water until he was deep enough to dive in. As he dove deeper into the water a thought occured to him. Can I use my super sight under the water? Shiloh had never tried such a thing and was intrigued to do just so. His eyes stung slightly as he opened them under the water, but he found that his vision was just as sharp as ever and could still zoom in and out with ease. He made a mental note to try his power again if he ever went swimming in murky water.
An aching for air started to swell in his lungs and the teen wasted no time in swimming up to the surface for a breath. Just as he gasped for a breath a wave slapped him in the face, causing him to swallow some of the water. Shiloh sputtered and coughed up water in a less than graceful display. He was going to write it off as a freak thing, but then remembered that the water in the lake was hardly ever rough unless the weather was bad. Imediately Shiloh went on a hunt to find the source of the troublesome wave. that they aren’t fun.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] OUR FRIENDSHIP'S LIKE A SLICE OF CHOCOLATE CAKE Nerina had, upon exploration of the academy, been delighted to discover a large, smooth-surfaced lake. What with her ability and love of birds (lake near trees, duh), she decided that she would come back at some point.
That point was on her second week, third day. It was baking hot- for her, remember she had lived in Cornwall, in England- so she was in a patterned bikini with some pale shorts over the top. Her hair was down, the way she liked it, and it fluttered slightly. As she dipped her toe in the lake, a far-off bird sang, so she happily whistled tunelessly back.
Hmm. The water wasn’t as smooth as she thought. She crouched down and laid her hand flat on the water, closing her eyes. Yes, there was definitely a disturbance somewhere... Under the water, left a bit, slightly boy-shaped. Nerina straightened up and had a really sneaky idea.
To someone else, it would have looked really weird, but she didn’t have a lot of control over her powers, so she still needed to use her hands and arms. She flattened her palm and pulled her arm back- and so slowly pushed it forward. A small wave rolled towards the disturbance-boy, getting larger and faster as it went on. Come on, come up for air, she willed the disturbance-boy, and suddenly he did. She giggled with glee as the wave tumbled into his face, and the boy coughed out the water. Good work, Neri. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] His eyebrow raised at the sound of a giggle radiating from the shore. With his hearing the voice seemed to almost bounce off the water before it echoed into his ears. Water droplets flicked off his hair as he whipped his head towards the shore. He quickly found the giggling culprit and zoomed in with his eyes. The edges of his vision blurred to let the center sharpen around the image of brunette. Damn water manipulators. He dove back under the water and began to swim to the shore, provided that she would even let him.
Shiloh felt mad, almost seething, towards the water manipulator. However, he was hot and the lake was one of the only ways he could cool off. So for once Shiloh decided to bite down his fighting tongue at the risk of her crashing a gigantic wave over his head. Shiloh thinking before he acted was a very rare occurence, in fact he blamed it all on the heat. Him being careful about his words had no signs of lasting though as he could only hold down his temper so much. This girl was going to have to be careful with her words unless she wanted him to lose his cool.
Shiloh's toes dug into the sand as he made his way up the shore. Orange eyes cast a subtle glare towards the brunette. His mouth turned into his trademark smirk as he walked closer to Nerina. "Cheeky much?" His English accent rung through his voice, and his brightly colored eyes shined with what could be mistaken as either humor or mischief. that they aren’t fun.

The Notes none Nerina felt some slight trepedition as the boy advanced- was she going to get yelled at? Burnt? Frozen? Vanished? Anything was possible at this school- then he spoke. She forgot all of her doubts, glad to meet someone of her own origin."You're English too!" she squealed, her slightly posh voice high with excitement. "And, er, yeah... I wouldn't normally have done it. It's just that, I wanted to... try it. I could feel you swimming and coming up for air." She noticed the boy's glowing orange eyes, but decided not to say anything; her own plain brown eyes widened slightly at the sight. She was getting a little hot, just standing there, and had an urge to get back into the water. As it was, she just twisted her hand slightly and the moisture in the air condensed into a mist, which fell over her. "Want to try? If you are from England, I bet you're not used to this heat," she teased. Maybe the boy would snap at her cheekiness- but she wasn't usually like this, it was just the heat of the moment (geddit? Heat?). She increased the mist a little, so it swirled around her. If the boy had had normal vision (which, to Nerina, he did) then she would have been slightly fuzzy. She felt kind of safer under her little cloak. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] "You're English too!" Her little shriek of excitement caused him to admit a short laugh. First she nearly chokes him with water and now she's happy to meet him? Such a strange one she was. Yet again, the students enrolled in Silas weren't exactly what you could call normal. I mean who was he to call someone strange, the kid with the orange eyes. "As are you." The smirk was replaced by a small smile, the mischevious glint never fazed though. It seemed like his eyes were never able to fully dispose of that sly spark.
The English girl continued, her voice changing from one of excitement to a more normal tone. "And, er, yeah... I wouldn't normally have done it. It's just that, I wanted to... try it. I could feel you swimming and coming up for air." From first impressions Shiloh had a feeling that she was the sort of girl who normally lived the good student lifestyle but was open to causing a little trouble every now and then. Yet again Shiloh wasn't an expert when it came to reading people, but that was he would believe until proven wrong.
Her brown eyes met his, and he took note of the subtle widening in hers. There were many students at Silas whose abnormalities would make Shiloh look like your average human, but that didn't stop people from staring. Not like Shiloh was bothered by that, in fact he loved the attention. If he ever found himself getting tired by such looks he could always pop in some colored contacts and pass off as a normal looking teen. There wasn't much of a chance of that happening though, he was fairly fond of the way he looked. It made it so he was hard to forget.
The girl moved her hand to cause a mist to form around her. He would have to make sure this girl was near him any time he pissed of his cousin Daniel, a fire manipulator. "Want to try? If you are from England, I bet you're not used to this heat," He grinned, grateful for the mist. "At the risk of the other option being me getting hit by a giant wave, then sure." The mist circled the other girl, nearly fully engulfing her. This caused no problem for the boy though as he focused his eyes so to see through the mist. "So, what's your name Ms. Cheeky?" The smirk was now back and he let out another quick laugh at his own question. that they aren’t fun.

She dipped her head slightly and replied, "Nerina Eaton. Surprisingly not Ms. Cheeky!" She smiled weakly at her own (rather pathetic) joke. "May I ask the same?" She wanted to know the boy-with-the-eyes' name, so she could tell him that his eyes were cool. It's a bit freaky when a nameless stranger comes up to you and tells you that something about you is superawesome- especially if he didn't like the eyes. Nerina glanced to the water, then back to Orange Eyes, wondering what his power was. Maybe something to do with vision... X-ray? Maybe he's a Hydro too, as he was in it... Or maybe he's a Pyro, as he needed to cool off... The possibilities were endless. At least she could say what she was.
She bit her lip and just blurted, “This might sound really weird, but first: I like your eyes. They’re really cool! ... And second, if you don’t mind me asking, what can you, you know, do?” She didn’t tell him that she was a Hydro, as he had probably guessed by the Huge Wave Assault. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] "Nerina Eaton. Surprisingly not Ms. Cheeky!" Shiloh let himself laugh a quiet laugh at the humor in her words. Nerina sounded eager to be friendly, she just had her own little awkwardness. It could have been much worse though, he had seen students so introverted that they couldn't even speak without breaking out into a sweat. Shiloh himself was lucky enough to be blessed with a more outgoing personality. He could approach anyone he wanted with little to no fear. However, his outgoing and somewhat fearless personality was exactly what made his temper so dangerous.
Nerina then took her turn in asking questions. "May I ask the same?" He grinned slightly even though she couldn't see him through the fog she had conjured up. He was curious if she would recognize him by his name. Though most people knew him well by his unnatural eyes, sometimes students had only heard of him by name. There was of course the case where students hadn't come across him reputation at all, that group normally containing the new arrivals or introverted students. "Shiloh Wright."
“This might sound really weird, but first: I like your eyes. They’re really cool!" The English boy raised an eyebrow at her sudden outburst. He was glad for the compliment, as random as it was. ".... And second, if you don’t mind me asking, what can you, you know, do?” That was a reasonable question, and he thought of telling her that he had lazer vision or something like that. He actually had one of the more passive powers, (though he had found a way to use it to his advantage at fights) and it was probably best for the school if he was never given something as dangerous as lazer vision. "I have super hearing and sight. And thanks for the erm . . . compliment on my eyes. Owl DNA is what makes them like that." It was true, when the scientists injected him with Eagle Owl DNA he inherited the bright color of the bird's eyes, as well as the animal's enhanced senses. "So as creepy as it may sound, I can still see you through the mist." that they aren’t fun.

The Notes none So, his name was Shiloh, eh? If this was a movie, then Nerina would probably spurt something about his name meaning- but seriously, she had never come across the name anywhere. She nodded and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Shiloh.” She wondered if he would be a good friend- if they were going to be friends. Maybe she would get to know him and find out what he was like, OK? That was her plan.
Her mouth popped open slightly when Shiloh told her his powers. Awesome- so he could see her now? She grinned suddenly (and poked her tongue out at Shiloh) as she thought of all the things that you could do with that power. He’d be an awesome secret agent, listening on people’s conversations and zooming in on the target... But then he’d be working for the government, and he’d be tested on first, and everyone knows that that’s a BAD thing.
“Owl DNA? Were you caught by... them?” she said in slight horror. The eyes were cool, but Nerina hated needles, and if they injected her with owl DNA, who knows what that would do to her powers? The strange thing was, Shiloh seemed like he was OK by being tested on. Poor Shiloh, Nerina’s heart went out to him them. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] He mimicked her goofy face, but quickly changed it back to a more normal expression as he remembered that she wouldn't be able to see through the mist. It was like looking through a one way mirror. Nerina's own expression suddenly changed to one of noticeable fear, leaving Shiloh momentarily puzzled. “Owl DNA? Were you caught by... them?” His head tilted as he tried to figure out who exactly they were. The confusion only lasted a second or so as he quickly came upon the decision that she was referring to the scientists that had injected him with the DNA.
"Technically no . . . the scientists promised to give my family money if I would allow them to inject me with the DNA so I went willingly." Orange eyes narrowed as he began to remember how they never received said money. Of all the things that pissed Shiloh off, the very thought of those bastard scientists was by far one of the worse. "They hoped that I would sprout wings like an owl, but I developed enhanced senses instead." His voice grew slightly deeper and more serious as he continued. "They never gave us the money."
Shiloh could have gone into much more detail about the experience with the scientist and the after effects. He didn't mention how his family was in desperate need for money at the time, and that by not receiving the promised cash they were forced to live in poverty. But worst of all, his family was forced to close down the beloved owl sanctuary in which they had worked at since he was a child. All of this information would be revealed eventually, but he wasn't about to give away all of his information to the girl.
He closed his eyes, biting down hard on his lip in an attempt to hold back his anger. Someday he would find those scientists and make them pay for what they did to his family. But today was not that day, and he was still going to have to stay at the school while his parents worked on rebuilding all they had lost. Shiloh's eyes snapped open, and he quickly tried to change the conversation before he found himself unable to hold back his rage, "So ugh, what about you? Sounds like you didn't have a very good experience with them either." that they aren’t fun.

The Notes none Nerina’s fear turned to sympathy- OK, and a bit of anger- when Shiloh explained about the mean scientists. Who does that? And gets away with it? They just threw away money on Shiloh, then wouldn’t even help out his family. “That’s just really stupid. I mean, you didn’t get wings, but you got vision and hearing, right? What use is flying if you can’t see where you want to land?” Nerina half-joked. If she was Shiloh, she would feel like she was missing out, so she kind of tried to big up his ability. She didn’t want to make him feel worse: it’s not as if she was going to say, Oh, well flying is way cooler, I’d rather have had that, I think the scientists were right, mainly because she didn’t.
Nerina watched Shiloh close his eyes and bite his lip. She guessed that he would be pretty angry; going from a normal person into a mutant with not the right ability in the scientists eyes, so they didn’t give his family money. There must have been more to it than that, but for now, Nerina was going to leave it. After all, she wasn’t really one to pry... She didn’t want to make things awkward or ruin a maybe-friendship with Shiloh. After all, she had already splashed him with water; she didn’t want to do anything more.
She grimaced as Shiloh asked the question. “Sort of- well, no,” she admitted, “It didn’t happen to me. When I was sixteen, I found my powers, and I was trying them at home, and my family found out. I told them not to do anything, pretend that it was normal, but they sent me to Silas... Not before my dad told the police, though. I disappeared, my normal family got tested. They missed me, and they couldn’t find out who it was. All’s well that ends well!” She ended on a brighter note, as her family hadn’t been harmed or anything. She just pissed off the government, and any mutant knows that’s a good idea. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] Nerina looked at him sympathetically as she commented on his less then desirable past. “That’s just really stupid. I mean, you didn’t get wings, but you got vision and hearing, right? What use is flying if you can’t see where you want to land?” Her voice had a happy ring to it as she attempted to cheer him up. Normally when Shiloh got riled up he wouldn't be able to calm down until he had expressed his anger on something or someone, but this strange girl had made his anger lower with a simple comment. Not even his cousin or roommate had managed to accomplish such a thing. Was this a gift that all girls possessed? No, Maeve was never able to cool his temper. This Nerina girl was just gifted.
"Good point. And wings would be sort of a pain to carry around anyway." He continued on the conversation by asking her a little about her own past. Surely such a nice and generally happy girl had lived some sort of privelaged surburban life. Nerina's sudden cringe told otherwise though. “Sort of- well, no,” Maybe she just had a fear of doctors then. “It didn’t happen to me. When I was sixteen, I found my powers, and I was trying them at home, and my family found out. I told them not to do anything, pretend that it was normal, but they sent me to Silas... Not before my dad told the police, though." Shiloh didn't know what it felt like to be feared by his own family. They feared for his wellbeing and for his future, but never were they actually scared of him. "I disappeared, my normal family got tested. They missed me, and they couldn’t find out who it was. All’s well that ends well!” There was that optimism again, and Shiloh wasn't sure whether or not he enjoyed her happy attitude or not. After a quiet moment of deliberation he decided he rather liked it.
It was now Shiloh's turn to act a little optimistic. Even though Nerina had acted content with her past he wasn't quite buying it. It seemed impossible for someone to like their power after all the grief it caused both her and her family. For once Shiloh felt a good impulse, that being the want to cheer Nerina up about her power. "I bet you get to try out some cool simulations in the simulation rooms, like make a hug whirlpool of water or something. So far the only one I've done was one where I was blindfolded and had to move through a maze using only my hearing." Shiloh wondered is he would ever get to do some more interesting simulations. Unlike many other students attending the school, he enjoyed his power and was always looking for ways to test its limits. that they aren’t fun.

The Notes none So it looked like Nerina had soothed Shiloh slightly, maybe, sort of. Did he usually calm down like that? Whatevs. She didn’t care. She liked him already, especially as that cool supervision and hearing stuff could get him a superspy job. She still had that dream of being scouted and asked to be the top agent, like in the movies.
“Oh, I hadn’t even thought about that! Would they go inside you? The physics of that don’t even work about that. How would your body make room?” she babbled. It was actually quite interesting, she realised, the mechanics of people with wings. Maybe one day... NO! Then she’d be like those evil scientist people who got her family.
"I bet you get to try out some cool simulations in the simulation rooms, like make a huge whirlpool of water or something. So far the only one I've done was one where I was blindfolded and had to move through a maze using only my hearing." Nerina contemplated this for a second, then nodded. “I haven’t really been in the rooms,” she said, “Only once. And I didn’t know how to work it, so I flicked some switches, and these table tennis balls started shooting at me... Then they got bigger.” She laughed and tapped her arm, mock-grimacing to indicate that there was a burn underneath the material of her jumper. |

Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] Nerina suddenly started to jabber about the anatomy of a person with wings, causing Shiloh's mouth to hang open slightly in shock. “Oh, I hadn’t even thought about that! Would they go inside you? The physics of that don’t even work about that. How would your body make room?” The teen had never bother to ask someone with flight more about their power, and he probably never would. He couldn't stop a swell of anger from forming inside him everytime his eyes laid on flight gifted student. This made striking up a conversation very unlikely. Shiloh would be thinking more about fighting then the mechanics of the person's power. "Uh, I don't know. Maybe you can ask the nurse about it." The orange eyed teen desperately wanted to change the conversation before that anger came back and he scared away the girl by ranting about his hatred for winged students.
Lucky for Shiloh, his comment about the simulation rooms worked well for changing the topic. “Only once. And I didn’t know how to work it, so I flicked some switches, and these table tennis balls started shooting at me... Then they got bigger.” Shiloh laughed as he imagined the water manipulator struggling to dodge the yellow balls. He was glad to have taken the introductory to simulations course in his first year, or else he may have ended up getting pummeled by tennis balls too. "Yeah, I don't think a water power would be very helpful in stopping tennis balls." Even Shiloh's power would have been more helpful in that simulation. He could probably use his hearing to help pinpoint the trajectory of the tennis ball, though dodging it would still be difficult.
The simulation room was very complex to manage with various buttons and wires that had to be set to certain modes. Once the computer had been set it could create it's own reality best suited to your power, sometimes unfolding large scenes while other times making simple things such as flying tennis balls. Shiloh knew that some students even tried to complete simulations in pairs. This caused the computer to create a more complicated simulation that would serve well in training both powers. The orange eyed teen had always wanted to try one of those simulations, but he needed a student willing to go into one with him. Nerina seemed like a good canidate so Shiloh took a chance. "I could always show you how to work the simulation room. It's pretty easy once you figure it out. We can even do a simulation together, the ones for more than one student tend to be more intricate and fun." that they aren’t fun.

Oh, good, she didn’t have to change the subject, it was already changed. The stimulation rooms didn’t really agree with Nerina. “I know, right?” she nodded, “When are my enemies going to throw flaming balls at me?” She had an immature urge to laugh, but she stopped herself. What would Shiloh (turning out to be a friend-to-be) think of her? She mentally scolded herself. A little weird, but that’s her.
"I could always show you how to work the simulation room. It's pretty easy once you figure it out. We can even do a simulation together, the ones for more than one student tend to be more intricate and fun." What, her? In the stimulation rooms? With him trusting her? Nerina looked at Shiloh sideways for a second, slightly concerned about his mental health, then she spoke. “Sure, er, I guess. You want to train with me? I mean, I’d really like to, but are you sure- you know- I’m not really very good at...” And that was only part of the problem. She didn’t really like using her powers. Quick decisions can be dangerous. but that doesn't mean ONE LAST THING: None [/div] The water manipulator tilted her head, looking at Shiloh as though he had lost his mind. He didn't think his question was too absurd. It wasn't like he'd asked if he could teach her how to skydive. “Sure, er, I guess. You want to train with me? I mean, I’d really like to, but are you sure- you know- I’m not really very good at...” Amusement eased into his expression at her words. He was there when his cousin Daniel was still learning how to control his fire power, he still wasn't very good at it actually, and Shiloh had been through all the destruction and burns that came along with it. Helping a water manipulator sounded like a walk in a park compared to hanging out with a fire manipulator.
Next time Shiloh ended up pissing off his cousin he had to remember to bring this girl with him. A walking extinguisher sounded like an added bonus for a friend. Damian would be no help, his wind ability would only fan whatever flame Daniel set. And what would Maeve do? Even if she had an ability of use to put out a flame Shiloh was sure that she would just stand there and watch while the orange eyed kid got what he deserved. Hopefully Nerina would help him if he was ever thrown into that sort of situation. Heck, if he ended up helping her with her power she would technically owe him.
Shiloh waved one hand, dismissing Nerina's worries. "The worst that could happen is that I get soaked. I've been through a lot worse than that." His mind drifted back to all the times his fighting behavior had gotten him a few serious injuries. The bruise on his jaw from his most recent fight was only just starting to fade, and the scabs on his knuckles were threatening to leave scars. Just what Shiloh needed, more proof of his reputation. that they aren’t fun.
